“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….” Dick offered to do this as a way of sharing his vast knowledge,

There’s always something to learn ….

I have followed this everyday. Bob said “no matter how small it may seem, learn something new everyday and you will be a better person”. I have done this and still do it. Yes it does work. Whether you read it, see it on tv or get it from someone else, learn something new!

A LONG time ago, I had a teacher (They do not get paid enough!) who instilled in me, something I have followed everyday. Bob was my instructor when I was attending college, for Algebra and then Trigonometry. Bob was a retired engineer from the Hawthorne Works in the Chicago area. The Hawthorne Works was a HUGE facility for Western Electric that was part of the AT&T -Bell Phone System. If this is all new to you, GOOGLE it and learn about it.

Starting in this issue, and they will continue on a regular basis, we are adding a new feature to the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE. “Dicks Shop Tips” debuts in this issue. Dick Raczuk, owner of KOUL TOOLS, has volunteered to share his knowledge of doing work in his shop and company. In the first article in this issue, Dick introduces himself and talks about his EXTENSIVE back round in manufacturing among many other experiences.

During the 2 classes that I had with Bob, Bob followed 2 things on a regular basis: #1: Bob always said “The mind can only absorb as much as the ass can endure”. We got regular breaks in Bob’s class and of course everyone liked that. We thought it was funny at the time, but as years went by, I came to fully understand what Bob truly meant. For those of you that have to attend meetings as part of your job you can really relate. While sitting is nice after a couple of hours you are ready for the damn meeting to end and productivity drops greatly in the meeting.

Dick offered to do this as a way of sharing his vast knowledge, We are grateful he is and has chosen the Gearhead Gazzette to do it in.

While we all think we know it all, I will raise my hand first, THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING TO LEARN!!! Thanks Bob… I did listen to you..

Live It Fully Everyday

Jimmy B.

Dodge Durango SRT Pursuit concept has 797-hp Redeye heart The supercharged, one-off SUV will compete in this year's One Lap of America race. With its 475-horsepower, 6.4-liter V8, the Dodge Durango SRT is pretty much a muscle car with three rows of seats. But as it's Fiat-Chrysler's wont to Hellcat all the things, it was only a matter of time before the big Durango got a properly ludicrous engine upgrade. Enter the 797-horsepower Durango SRT Pursuit. Now, before you get your hopes up, let's make one thing clear: this is purely a concept. Dubbed "Speed Trap," the Durango SRT Pursuit was created solely for the purpose of participating in the annual One Lap of America race, which takes place from May 4 to 11. As its power output suggests, the Durango SRT Pursuit uses the supercharged, 6.2-liter V8 found under the hood of the Challenger Redeye. In addition to the added oomph, the oneoff SUV gets a free-flow, stainless-steel, cat-back exhaust, as well as a 0.6-inch lower ride height. 15.7-inch front and 13.8-inch rear Brembo brakes should provide excellent stopping power, set behind a unique set of 20-inch wheels, wrapped in 305/35ZR20 Pirelli P-Zero tires -- the same rubber you'll find on a Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody. Good rubber is especially important, since One Lap rules stipulate that cars can only use one set of tires for the entire 4,000-mile extravaganza, with a single spare allowed for emergencies.

The "Speed Trap" name comes from the Durango's Pursuit Law Enforcement livery, which includes lights, sirens -- the works. Inside, this SUV uses the same interior as the stock Durango SRT, though a four-point roll bar and five-point safety harness have been added per racing regulations. One Lap of America is a sort of successor to the original Cannonball Run of the 1970s, both of which were created by iconic automotive journalist Brock Yates. (His son, Brock Yates, Jr., now spearheads the annual One Lap event.) Racers will compete at eight tracks in seven different states over the course of one week. You can follow along on One Lap's website.

By Dick Raczuk In the upcoming issues of Gearhead Gazzette I have decided to pass on some of the knowledge I have accumulated over the years working with some of the masters of the trade. I was involved in design and manufacturing of parts for Honda, Kawasaki, G.M., Toyota, and McCulloch Corp., and as owner of Kerker exhausts back in the 80’s. This led to a lot of relationships with some very talented people. The knowledge acquired from these observations and studies is what I hope to pass on. I do not claim to be an expert by any means. My goal is to give a jump start to anyone that is new to the trade or hobby. Some of the tips will be very elementary, but we all have to start somewhere. If you would like to chip in with a shop tip of your own, please feel free to contact me here: dicksshoptips@gmail.com These tips will not be about "how to build a hammer" etc. etc., but rather on how to use the equipment to build one. So why keep it to yourself, better to “pass it on”. If you have the opportunity to be around or work with some of these talented people, do yourself a favor and follow this rules: OBSERVE: Watch what’s going on. In particular, how he holds, strokes, positions, his hands, feet, body, or whatever to achieve his goal. ANALYZE: Now, figure out why he is using this process. Don’t be afraid to ask. But if you can figure it out on your own, you'll have a better chance of remembering it. (better than the guys name you just met) STORE: Now you have to store this in your memory. All the observing and analyzing won’t do you any good unless you can recall from memory when needed.

SHOP TIP #1 - DRILLING TIPS Sooo, here we go with some drilling tips: 1. If the chips are turning blue, slow down the spindle speed. 2. Keep the lube between the cutter and the work piece. 3. On aluminum, I use a tapping fluid formulated specifically for aluminum. A little goes along way here. I have found a small plastic bottle with a small tube on the lid works great. (in Calif. you might have to use a paper bottle):) 4. On steel, use a good sulferized cutting oil for drilling and go to a tapping fluid like “Tapmatic” for tapping threads. 5. Big drills like to go slow, and small drills like to go faster. If you remove your drill from the work piece and it is blue or changing colors, slow it down. They have charts for speeds and feeds. 6. Simple green works good for clean up. 7. Sharpening drills by hand is not that difficult. It does take some practice to develop the skill. It may be easier to buy a “Drill Doctor” to perform the task. They are easy to use. 8. On plastics, use a 60 degree angle, 0 degree rake. This works much better. If anybody is interested , I will post a picture of one with this rake. 9. When drilling deep holes, withdraw the drill frequently to remove the chips. Drills don’t like being crowded with chips in deep holes. Crowded holes usually end up bigger than the drill size. 10. If you really want a hole drilled “on size", drill a smaller pilot hole first then the finish size drill. Example: Use a 1/4” pilot drill and then finish with 1/2” drill. That’s enough for now. Too many tips and you’ll forget them.
