For the 70th consecutive year, the best hot rods, customs, lowriders and motorcycles from every corner of America will visit Southern California in January for the Grand National Roadster Show. More than 400 awards—including America’s Most Beautiful Roadster—are up for grabs at the show’s platinum-anniversary event, set for Jan. 25-27 at the Fairplex in Pomona, California. The Grand National Roadster Show, founded in 1949, is the longest continually running indoor car show in the world. This year’s event will feature more than 1,000 show cars and a special tribute to Chip Foose, who will be honored as the Builder of the Decade. An array of Foose’s builds will be included in a special exhibition showcasing “the best and most famous Model A Ford Hot Rods from the past 90 years, dozens of top parts vendors, pinstriping demonstrations and more,” according to show organizers. The show will also feature 13 hand-crafted roadsters from around the country competing for the highly coveted America’s Most Beautiful Roadster (AMBR) award. Competitors include 1932 and 1933 Fords, Model As, Phaetons and other coach-built open cars crafted by legendary car builders like Adam’s Hot Rods, Dominator Street Rods, Moal Coachbuilders and Pinkee’s Rod Shop. The winner will have their name engraved on the monolithic 9-foot tall perpetual trophy and will receive a $10,000 prize. Previous AMBR award winners include iconic builders like Boyd Coddington, George Barris, Chip Foose, Blackie Gejeian, Troy Ladd and 2018 winner Scott Bonowski of Hot Rods and Hobbies. 8
The 70th anniversary show is also set to honor 90 years of the Ford Model A with more than 100 of these iconic roadsters, coupes, sedans, tudors and pickups on display. Special highlights of the Model A display will include seven previous AMBR award winners, the Eddie Dye roadster, Chrisman Brothers sedan and Elvis Presley’s roadster from “Loving You.” In addition to this display of Model A’s, numerous Bonneville and NHRA record holding vehicles will be featured throughout the show. World-renowned hot rod builders—such as Steve Strope, Troy Ladd, Jimmy Shine, Troy Trepanier, Bobby Alloway and Roy Brizio—also are set to attend this year’s show, with cars on display. There will be car club displays from The Road Kings, Lifestyle, Inland Mopars, German Folks and more. Attendees will be invited to take part in the drive-in show on Saturday and Sunday, where more than 800 cars will be placed outside the buildings throughout the Fairplex grounds. The show will also feature the Pinstriper Charity Auction in building four, where a group of the most talented pinstripers in the country will be selling their work and striping live, with all proceeds set to go to Drive Toward a Cure, benefiting Parkinson’s Disease research, sponsored by PPG. Show hours are as follows: Jan. 25—Noon to 8 p.m. Jan. 26—10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 27—10 a.m. to 6 p.m. General admission tickets cost $25 per day; junior admission tickets (612 years old) are $10 per day, and children under five enter free. That title is pretty bold statement in the hot rod world. When you put a statement like that out there, you better be able to back it up...BIG TIME! The L.A. Roadsters can do just that. 2018 saw the 54th edition of the LA Roadster Show and Swap Meet take place. Now held this past many years at the Fairplex in Pomona CA, this show has grown from humble beginnings in 1960, to one huge fun filled weekend of roadster fun in the California sun.
If it’s Fathers Day weekend, you can bet that hot rodders from around the world, yes the world head to Pomona for all thigs roadster. Flying in is common and there are more than a few road tours that 18
head to Pomona from all corners of the USA.
A lot of folks come into town a few days early to attend some of the many events leading up to the roadster show. Walden Speed Shop opens it’s door to hot rodders to
come check out what the latest metal crafting is taking place in the shop. Bobby Walden and his team have become legendary for passing out ice cream sandwiches to everyone who comes to the open house. 19
So-Cal Speed Shop hosts an open house too earlier in the day on Friday before the roadster show. Every square foot of concrete around their buildings is covered in hot rod hardware and the street out front is used for more parking too! Even more of the various hot rod shops in the LA area open their doors for gearheads to come by to check out their latest builds
The LA Roadster show takes up the WHOLE Fairplex grounds for the weekend. If you have been you know what we are talking about because these fairgrounds are massive. If you have never been and plan on coming for the first time, wear comfortable shoes, a hat is recommended too as the sun can get hot in the afternoon. There are thousands of cars that are part of the show. The roadster 20
alone number in the 700-850 number. Add in the “Specialty” parking area for the non roadsters that are Pre-72 vintage and you have a multi -thousand car show taking place. The LA Roadster show swap meet is legendary. Some hot rodders only bring stuff to sell to this event. They save it all year because they know the hard core swap meet shoppers will be here looking for those hard to find parts. You could spend both days in the swap meet and not cover it all...literally! Over the past couple of years, the LA Roadster Club tried a bit of a different format with another show producer running the event. We’re not going to get into the fray of good or bad. One thing we do know as we put this feature together, the LA ROADSTER Club has taken back the management and running of the show and swap meet for 2019. If you’ve never been, make plans now for the 2019 show and swap. If you’ve been before, we bet many of you will be going back again… cause we love those roadsters! This one truly is the Great Roadster Show on Earth. Photography by Craig Wise & Michael Corazzelli Feature story by Jimmy B 21

FOR SALE: One Well Used and Speed Proven Wind Tunnel. Who doesn’t need a bit more shaving on the old laminar flow? Not you? Well, how about that hot rod racer down the lane who might have a genuine use for it? No? Think of what great gift this would make to your local university and you’d have a stellar write-off! Originally built by a guy out of sheer curiosity about how aero stuff works and had the spare change to do it really right. Life has downshifted and the spot he had the tunnel installed is no longer available. This tunnel has improved the speeds and records of several dozen land speed cars including George Poteet’s Speed Demon that lays down wicked quick 400+MPH runs on the Bonneville Salt Flats. It is a first-class system with operational credibility and plenty of cheerful grateful testimonials. But wait, there’s more! The owner/builder/operator will put the thing back into full operational form so how can you resist a turn-key deal? Do your diligence and you will quickly realize there is more than a million invested. That’s a whole lotta McKinley's ($500), Cleveland's ($1,000), Madison's ($5,000), and Chase's ($10,000) beside the Franklin’s and Grants. The tunnel is an open circuit, Eiffel style. It was professionally designed and calibrated. Test results show repeatable numbers with less than 1% deviation between runs. The wind tunnel began construction in 2010. It took approx. 4800 man-hours to complete over a two+ year period not including building construction or the pit under the test section of the tunnel. The tunnel is 100' long and 20'+ high at the inlet end. The test section is shaped and approx. 9'-4" high in the center and 13'-6" wide, and 50' long. The three fans are built by Howden and are 150 HP each, 460V, and are 6' in diameter. The fans are controlled by a Mitsubishi Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) with remote controller in the control room. The fans pull air through the test section then the air recirculates in the room. Wind speed in the tunnel varies from about 10mph to 80mph depending on the desired speed and the shape and size of the test object. Test object should not exceed 25 sq. ft. in frontal area for most accurate test results. This is the size of a full size car. The VFD has incremental speed control for accurate airflow around the test object. Under the floor of the test section is a pit which houses the balance. The pit is accessible by a staircase opposite the control room. The balance is a large space frame and is mounted to Honeywell load cells which are designed to hold up to a 10,000 lb. vehicle. There are seven load cells which measure lift, drag, and side forces. All forces are calculated and recorded in an Excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet displays coefficients for all six forces and moments. It also calculates all forces in Drag HP, Drag LBs, Total Lift, Lift Front and Rear LBs, and Side LBs, all at a customer selected mph. There is also a bicycle balance for testing cyclists and equipment. This balance was used to test 2000 elite cyclists. Airflow is measured by 3 pitot tubes in the inlet and 2 static ports in the aft portion of the test section which feed to a pressure transducer panel. Air turbulence is eliminated by a 3" thick aluminum honeycomb panel in the fore part of the test section. Plastic netting was added for better control. Vehicles enter the tunnel through a hinged door in the aft of the tunnel next to the fans. The current room dimensions are 49' wide, 140' long, and 35' high. A lower ceiling will be acceptable. Included in the sale: Complete wind tunnel structure from the inlet to the fan diffusers. Mitsubishi VFD. Balance with load cells and complete wiring to the control room. Bicycle balance platform with Computrainer installed. Ski Jumper beam. A large variety of car mounting stands. Complete computer system with Windows OS. Data Acquisition System including 13 pressure channels with pressure taps to the pit. Aerolab smoke generator wand. The buyer will be responsible for the building and the balance pit, all of which will be dimensionally specified in the sale. At an additional cost, I can assemble everything on the new site for a "turn key" operation including training of new operator. The complete wind tunnel will be broken down and palletized to ship. Reconstruction will take approx. 2-3 months when the building is ready. The electrical wiring of the fans and control room will have to be done professionally on site.. Approximate cost to construct in 2010, not including the building or pit: $400,000 package cost for design plans, computer hardware, software, Data Acquisitions System, bicycle balance, smoke wand. 115,000 fans with inlet bells. 30,000 VFD . 80,000 materials. 210,000 building preparation including the pit and electrical. 230,000 labor. Price: $600K For more info
