Some of this and some of that... December ramblings...some of this and that…. We’re saying hello to December today. In 22 days it will be Christmas. In 28 days we’ll ring in the new year. I for one have never been one to wish my life away, by hoping to get to a special faster….BUT with the way 2020 has been treating all of us on the planet...let’s say, saying GOOD BYE to 2020 cant come fast enough.

We are happy that you like what we do around here enough to sign up to get the magazine delivered straight to your email box. Thank you also to all of you who have LIKED our GEARHEAD GAZZETTE Facebook page. Our followers are growing each week and we LIKE that a lot. All of you who FOLLOW us on Instagram...THANK YOU also. Everyday we pick up new followers and that makes us feel good! If you don’t follow s on either FB or IG, go check it out. We keep everyone updated every day with some kind of gearhead fun and news. REMINDER to all of our subscribers, readers and followers. Starting in 2021 we are changing to a BIWEEKLY publication format. Every 2 weeks we will get a new issue out to you. This will change when you need to get your event to us to include in the listings. Earlier the better but at a minimum at least 4 weeks before the event to make sure it goes in. I talked about 2021 being a better year for all of us to be able to do what we like and get to some car shows, a couple columns back. That is still looking good as the 2021 event keep rolling in. Flexibility will be the key for the first part of 2021. Already some BIG indoor shows have been pushed back some months. The GNRS is now in the middle of May. The Detroit Autorama is at the end of April and the Chicago World of Wheels is the first weekend in May. I have seen a number of complaints in social media on these shows moving, but moving is better than NO SHOW...right? Some builders are very happy as they have a little more time to get new builds done for the shows. Detroit and Chicago with now snow or 5

Classic Recreations Expanding Lineup, Facilities Classic Recreations is undergoing an expansion including new car models, the hiring of additional personnel and an additional 24,000 sq. ft. manufacturing and showroom facility in North Texas, the company announced. This expansion will increase production of its classic muscle cars, as well as accepting high-performance restoration projects. “In spite of the challenging economic climate, the hunger for our handcrafted vehicles continues to be off the charts,” said Jason Engel, founder, co-owner and lead designer at Classic Recreations. “To meet that global demand, we expanded our team in Oklahoma and established an amazing new facility in North Texas. Best of all, we grew the company all without a cent of debt. In addition to building cars, the Texas facility will offer world-class modifications, repair and restoration of all hot rods, muscle cars and classics.” Classic Recreations’ team of technicians and craftsmen modify and build highperformance 1960s and early 70s era Resto-Mods. The built-to-order vehicles incorporate the latest technology including contemporary motors, materials, suspension, comfort features, brakes and more, the company says. In addition to the new infrastructure, Classic Recreations recently expanded its product line to include more models, such as Shelby continuation Cobras, and an allcarbon-fiber bodied Shelby GT500CR. To expand the North Texas and Oklahoma facilities, Classic Recreations will have hired nearly 30 additional employees by the end of 2020. d your AM radio on in the ‘60’s,70’s and even the 80’s(might be FM then) as er to the weekend, you probably heard those 3 words screaming out of your ker if you were anywhere close to a dragstrip.

st, the track owner of the U.S. 30 drag strip in Hobart, Indiana, wanted to and make it known that his tracks were open on Sundays. He enlisted the eve Cronen at Starbeat Recording Studios in Deerfield, Illinois. Originally, r the tagline was to have two announcers trade intonations of "Sunday!".

n 1967 The Sunday, Sunday, Sunday radio spot was recorded at WLTH radio by Jerry Wilkerson and Peter Jerome at3110 AM on Thursday mornings.

It usually took an hour to "get it together" because the copy was so long it ran more than 60 seconds to record, or the announcers screwed up, lost their breath or just missed a word. Because it was tape, the announcers had to record it again from the beginning. A courier from Chicago, who brought the copy with him, would run the taped spot back to Chicago for distribution to WLS and possibly WCFL for air Thursday afternoon through Sunday morning.

After dismissing nearly 50 announcers because they weren't vibrant enough, Jan Gabriel's announcing was picked as the iconic tagline by Cronen. The spots ended with "Where the great ones run!", read and echoed by Gabriel. His deep voice and tagline was extensively used by Christ in many of his other racing venues advertisements, with Gabriel often recording fresh tracks up until the 1980s. The tagline was often imitated by other racetrack announcers and in popular culture till its decline in the 1980s as many small tracks and drag strips closed down or were absorbed by other organizations. In 2020, The Grand National Roadster 32

show held a special exhibit in building 9. Titled “DRAG RACING...Then & Now”. The special exhibit featured so many great race cars. TV Tommy Ivo, Ed Pink, Keith Black, Fat Jack Robinson, Top Fuelers, Nitro Funny Cars, Fuel Altereds, Super Stockers and Wheel standers too! From wall to wall this was one great exhibit!

Walking through the building, seeing all those drag cars brought back many memories of watching drag racing when I was much younger, back where I grew up in the Midwest, at Oswego Raceway (Oswego IL), Great Lakes Dragway and at US 30 Dragstrip too. We heard those commercials every week on WLS radio. Later in life when stationed in San Diego for the US NAVY, I used to hear the late Steve Evans do the commercials for the big drag events at OCIR on the radio too. Took the drive up there too many times because as the ad said…”DON’T YOU DARE MISS IT!” 3 little words that came screaming at you... that meant nothing but hot rod fun!
