age in most cases, and that is troublesome to me and should be to you too. Our odometer clicks another year off rapidly these days. Reality is we lose gearheads and hot rodders to age and time. We need a BIG infusion of YOUNG BLOOD into hot rodding if we want it to survive. Sure its not going anywhere in the next few years...BUT who is going to carry on for us? As the George Jones song says “ who’s gonna fill their shoes?” Yes we have younger hot rodders involved in our end of the motorsports world, but not like when we were younger and in our 20’s. I believe NSRA used to run a section in STREET SCENE called 21 & Below featuring young hot rodders and their rides. Now I believe its up to 30 years old to get people to participate. See what I mean. As we have shared here many times before, TAKE A KID TO A CAR SHOW! Invite them to ride along, just like we got to years ago. I remember those days well...some of the BEST I had….

As we have gone through 3/4’s of 2021,some observations I have pondered on lately. 2021 may have started off slowly from a car show/cruise in perspective, with little or nothing going on right at the beginning and then ramping up more and more in the spring time. From June through the beginning of October, I do feel that there were more one day car shows than in 2019 when things were humming along just fine. Participation at these events seems to be up also. I say this from being at some events, and checking on many through social media and talking to folks who put the events on. Cruise-in’s, especially Saturday & Sunday morning cruise-in’s have grown TREMENDOUSLY in 2021!! Even the number of evening cruisein’s have grown across the USA. I credit this because they are shorter in duration of the event, they are designed to come and go when you want , most are free or you give a small donation and they don’t have awards so no one gets mad, upset or insert your favorite verb here over not winning a $10.00 trophy. Having been to a number of events, the hair color at them is various shades of GRAY on most of the guys in attendance. Gray equals

Goodguys Names Chevrolet Performance Builder of the Year Award Winners Goodguys Rod & Custom Assoc. has named the winners of its inaugural Chevrolet Performance Builder of the Year awards, the organization announced. The two awards recognize the top performance-built GM and GM-powered vehicles from among the entries at 14 of the Goodguys events in 2021. The winner of this year’s Chevrolet Performance GM Iron Builder of The Year award is a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle built by Bobby Alloway and his shop, Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop. It is powered by a Keith Dorton-built LSX topped with NASCAR SB2 valve covers that produces 720 horsepower and is mated to a Tremec TKO fivespeed from American Powertrain. Along with the title, Alloway and his team won an LT5 Connect & Cruise crate powertrain system that includes an LT5 engine, eight-speed transmission, an LT5 engine controller kit, transmission installation kit and an eight-bolt flexplate kit, also courtesy of Chevrolet Performance. The Chevrolet Performance GM Retro Iron Builder of The Year title recognized a non-GM bodied build with GM power. The winning 1935 Ford built by Roger Burman, owner of Lakeside Rods & Rides, is powered by 6.2-liter LS3 crate engine cranking out 425 horsepower mated to an automatic transmission controlled with a C6 Corvette shifter. Along with the title, Burman and his team also won an LS3 Connect & Cruise crate powertrain system that includes, an LS3 engine, a six-speed transmission, an LS3 engine controller kit and a transmission installation kit courtesy of Chevrolet Performance. Both award-winning cars will be prominently displayed at the Goodguys 24th Speedway Motors Southwest Nationals, presented by Barrett-Jackson, Nov. 19-21 in Scottsdale, Arizona. 10

Tony Stewart Announces New NHRA Nitro Team With Pruett, Hagan Auto racing superstar Tony Stewart announced in a press conference the addition of a drag racing program to his Tony Stewart Racing enterprise, featuring a Top Fuel Dragster to be driven by fiancé Leah Pruett and reigning Funny Car champion Matt Hagan. After more than four decades of racing around in circles, Tony Stewart has embarked on a straight and narrow path, albeit at more than 300 mph. The championship-winning racecar driver who has successfully transitioned to being a championship-winning team owner is joining the NHRA in 2022. His eponymous team, Tony Stewart Racing (TSR), will field two fulltime entries – one in Top Fuel for ninetime event winner Leah Pruett and one in Funny Car for 39-time event winner Matt Hagan. The manufacturer and the team’s technical alliance associate, along with corporate partners, will be announced at a later date. “When I retired from fulltime driving I said it wasn’t the end, but the beginning of a new chapter. This is proof of that,” said Stewart, who also co-owns Stewart-Haas Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series with machine tool magnate Gene Haas. “I appreciate all forms of racing and I’ve always been intrigued about drag racing and NHRA, in particular. Back in 2009 when Tony Schumacher and I were both representing the U.S. Army, I got to hang out with him and Don Schumacher at the U.S. Nationals. Tony ended up winning and after taking it all in, I was hooked. But it wasn’t until I met Leah and started going to races regularly, where I saw the strategy and the preparation firsthand, that I truly understood it.” Stewart has been a regular at NHRA events since last year when he and Pruett began dating. They are now engaged, with the couple set to be married in November after the season finale in Pomona, California. 11

NICB Releases Annual Report of Most Stolen Vehicles The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) today released its annual Hot Wheels report identifying the top 10 most stolen vehicles in the United States in 2020. For the second year in a row, the Ford full size pick-up was the model most targeted by thieves, followed by the Chevrolet full size pick -up, which supplanted the formerly second-place Honda Civic. “Auto thefts saw a dramatic increase in 2020 versus 2019 in part due to the pandemic, an economic downturn, law enforcement realignment, depleted social and schooling programs, and, in still too many cases, owner complacency,” said David Glawe, president and CEO of the NICB. “For many people, a car is the second largest investment they will ever make behind a home. No matter what kind of vehicle you have, take steps to protect your investment – lock your car and take your keys.” Thefts for all models in the top 10 were up in 2020 compared to 2019, but only Ford, Chevrolet and GMC full size pick-ups and the Honda CR-V saw double digit theft increase percentages. In this year’s list, six of the top 10 most stolen vehicles were Japanese models. 13

GM Transmission ID Guide: Powerglide, Turbo 350, And Turbo 400 & More These days, when engine swaps are taking place, transmissions are being changed out also. Some of the most popular transmissions in use today by gearheads and hot rodders, come from General Motors. When repairing or restoring your Chevrolet car or truck, identifying the transmission you’re running is a key element to avoid the automotive version of quicksand. General Motors has produced a myriad of versions of its fabled automatic transmissions over the years, although three models make up the bulk of pre-ECM GM slushboxes; the Powerglide, the Turbo-Hydramatic 350 (Turbo 350), and the Turbo-Hydramatic 400 (Turbo 400). Let’s take a brief look at the backstory and origins of each transmission, and how you can visually identify them as well as locate ID tags and identification numbers. The easiest method of GM automatic transmission identification is to examine the transmission pan. Evolutionary designs came with unique pan shapes, which are clear indicators of which transmission you are dealing with. Once you identify the pan, count the number of pan bolts for confirmation.

The length of the unit can also tell you a few things. Not only is the diagram below helpful for identification purposes, but is a great visual source to see if you have enough room for a swap you might be contemplating. For example, replacing a Powerglide with a Turbo 350 is an easy swap. This is because the transmission lengths are the same and the positioning of the cross member can be easily modified, you only need to change the transmission mount, add transmission cooler lines, and update the shift indicator to a Turbo 350 pattern to complete the exchange.

Never underestimate the mighty post-war Powerglide. This two-speed box thrives after 71 years and still sees use in motorsports and classic cars. There are not too many gearboxes that can make that claim. When introduced in upper-level Chevrolet models in 1950, the Powerglide represented the first automatic transmission offered by the Big Three. Ford didn’t offer its automatic transmission until 1951, and Mopar buyers had to wait until 1954.

The Powerglide was Chevrolet’s main automatic transmission through the mid-1970s. A mechanically robust transmission, it was used in other General Motors vehicles as well. The transmission underwent little change, the major difference was a switch from cast iron to an aluminum casting in 1963. Now when you go junk yard hunting...you have an idea of exactly what to look for as you get ready to swap that GM transmission in behind your engine. 89
