smarts to keep them until now….who knew. My bicycle gave me a sense of driving. It was freedom on two wheels. Saw another kid put baseball cards on the spokes so it made “NOISE. Yep...used the clothes pin from the wash line to hold them on. Faster I went the better it sounded to me. Again...those baseball cards are probably worth some money these days but the sound was way more important then. My first car, the ’66 Dodge Polara with a 383/ Torqueflite...MY HOT ROD!!! Jacked it up with HIJACKER airs shocks and put the THRUSH muffler on it. I did have a job after school so little by little I created my “cool car”. Senior year in high school I got a 1969 Olds 442...BIG TIME now!! After a tour with Uncle Sam in the Navy, I got hoked on hot rods, pre-48 stuff bad by a good friend, Marv Castelli. He had a ’32 Plymouth coupe and he used to take me to cars shows and riding around. That loud, rough riding, cool as could be hot rod really lite a fire inside me. Hard to put in words but if you have it you know what I mean. Hot Rodding...a disease for which there is now cure...only addiction...a good addiction.

Recently while talking with my good friend Michael Young of Street Rods by Michael about hot rod stuff, we both started reminiscing on what set us down the path of being addicted to “cars”. We all started loving cars and trucks somewhere back in time. If it didn't you wouldn't be reading this issue of the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE right now. Everyone experienced the addiction hitting them at a different time and age...but it did hit all of us. For me I can remember clear as the day I saw it. I was riding with my mom...in the back seat standing on the floor ( seat belts not required or installed at that time...you do the math.) looking out the side window. We were at a red light and it pulled up next to us….a 1964 Chevelle. It was that purple lilac factory color with a white vinyl top...jacked up in the back and LOUD!!...In my young mind that was the COOLEST thing ever!! This started be down the path that I follow today. After that sighting, I watched for cool cars all the time while in the car. I got MATCHBOX cars and even got an AURORA F/X HO figure 8 race set. Wore it out racing with my brother or whoever wanted to race. Discovered model cars and couldn't build enough of them. If I only had the

Carroll Shelby's Personal Cobra Is Up For Auction! It doesn’t matter if you are high-end car collector or a casual car enthusiast. Anyone remotely interested in cars is aware of the Scottsdale Barrett-Jackson auction. Along with many other sought-after vehicles, this auction will feature the only remaining 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake (lot # 1396). This car was personally owned by Carroll Shelby himself. It will be auctioned as part of a private collection in Scottsdale, on March 2027, 2021. The Chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson said it best. "CSX 3015 is arguably one of the most iconic, and important, American sports cars ever built. In 1968, Road & Track called it ‘The Cobra To End All Cobras’ and it has more than lived up to that standard. When it first crossed our block in 2007, Carroll was there and told the story of how he got pulled over by the Nevada Highway Patrol doing 190 mph in the car. Its sale ended up setting a new world record for any Shelby vehicle sold at auction. Carroll often said, ‘make history, then repeat it,’ and that’s exactly what we hope to do again. This car was truly ‘Carroll’s Cobra,’ and it, along with other incredible vehicles selling from this private collection, will make collector car history next month." The 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake CSX 3015 is one of only 23 total 427 competition roadsters ever built. About a year later this car was transformed for racing legend Carroll Shelby into the Super Snake and reclassified as 427 Cobra Semi-Competition (S.C.). Shelby American later added twin Paxton superchargers to the 427ci V8. They also matched it to a 3-speed automatic transmission that was perfect at handling the massive power. Champion Oil Seeking Diesel Vehicle Builds for SEMA 2021 Champion Oil, a manufacturer of performance diesel engine oil, is seeking diesel vehicle builds for SEMA 2021, the company announced. The vehicles, which are typically pickups, the company said, will be promoted by a variety of marketing methods using social media platforms and technologies. The 2021 SEMA Show will be in Las Vegas, Nov. 2-5. Champion will provide Champion’s Blue Flame Performance Diesel Engine Oil and marketing support to a limited a number of diesel-specific project vehicles that plan on displaying either outside, inside or at a specific vendor booth at the SEMA Show. The vehicles will be promoted in advance by press releases, social media and more. At the show, the vehicle and owner must be willing and available to be featured in a video interview about the build that will be posted on the Blue Flame Diesel Blog and Champion Facebook and Twitter channels. The diesel vehicle owner will be able to autograph photos during the show at the Champion booth, plus purchase additional Champion products at a special show display pricing of 50/50. Mickey Thompson to Sponsor New NMRA Street Car Challenge Class Mickey Thompson Tires and Wheels has signed on as title sponsor of the NMRA’s newest small-tire drag racing category, the company announced The Mickey Thompson Street Car Challenge class is a three-event, non-championship category aimed at attracting small-tire/DOT-equipped tire Ford-brand vehicles that don’t fit into the regular lineup for NMRA Heads-Up, Index or QA1 True Street categories, the company said.

The new category is designed to replace NMRA Turbo Battle and Terminator/Cobra vs. GT500 Shootout races that have run at select events over the last several years. It consolidates those two categories into one group and is also open to many other Ford vehicles and combinations at any level, the series said. “Mickey Thompson is a leader in the DOT/drag radial tire market, so it is a natural fit for us to back a street car-type class. We look forward to seeing all sorts of Mustangs and Fords get involved at these NMRA events and have some fun,” said Tom Kundrik, motorsports manager, Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels. “We are excited to introduce a new class to the NMRA—one that is an open competition for small tire/DOT tire-equipped cars and trucks,” said Rollie Miller, general manager and national event director, Holley NMRA Ford Nationals. “It should help get as many enthusiasts on-track as possible during our national events.” The top 16 racers at each event will be entered into a heads-up Quick 16 Round-Up, while the other Mickey Thompson Street Car Challenge competitors will be allowed to enter Bracket 3 at no charge. Each Quick 16 Round-Up winner and runner-up will be eligible for the NMRA contingency program, and Mickey Thompson is also adding a $600 gift card on top of the $750 prize for the Quick 16 winner. ROUSH Performance Releases 2021 ROUSH Ranger Roush Performance has announced the release of its 2021 ROUSH Ranger, which includes an upgraded off-road performance suspension, wheels, tires, a catback exhaust system and exclusive interior upgrades.

The ROUSH Ranger features a dual tip cat-back exhaust system that increases horsepower and torque while providing an aggressive exhaust note, the company said. The 50-state legal exhaust system is built with corrosion-resistant 304 stainless steel and includes dual-

wall stainless steel exhaust tips.

The ROUSH/Fox 2.0 coilover suspension system improves the Ranger’s off-road performance while also increasing stability on the street. The front coilover shocks feature tuned performance springs and are preset with 2-inches of lift to level the truck’s stance. Both the front and rear shocks are constructed with 6061-T6 aluminum, use internal floating pistons to provide a smooth, stable ride across any terrain and feature custom Ranger-specific valving. ROUSH 18-inch wheels are wrapped in 32-inch General Tire Grabber A/TX allterrain tires. Up front, the signature ROUSH grille includes integrated LED accent lights. Magnetic Gray fender flares accommodate the 32-inch tires and give the truck a wider, more aggressive appearance. Additional ROUSH-exclusive aesthetic upgrades include the standard graphics package, custom red tow hooks and heat-extracting fender vent badges. ROUSH’s custom interior features premium leather seating as well as embroidered headrests, a ROUSH gauge cluster and serialized badging. ROUSH floor liners by WeatherTech protect the truck’s cab from dirt and debris and are removable for cleaning. Owners can further upgrade the ROUSH Ranger with the ROUSH Chase Rack with dual Rigid light bars, an off-road utility kit, locking vault for the center console and rear seats and various graphic package upgrades. “The Ranger has quickly become one of the most popular mid-sized trucks on the market,” said Jack Roush Jr. “We’ve expanded upon the truck’s already good capabilities, enhancing its looks and equipping it to perform better on nearly any terrain.” The 2021 ROUSH Ranger package is available for 2021 Ford Ranger trucks equipped with the 2.3-liter Ecoboost engine, starts at $12,750 over factory MSRP and comes with a 3year/36,000-mile limited warranty. 9
