Let’s all get in the time machine and take a ride backwards...

I am sure that a lot of you gearheads get asked the same question that I get…”why do you have that old car or truck)?” The question usually comes from a non-gearhead or casual observer at some event or in the parking lot when you are out shopping with your pride and joy.

Recently I have taken to telling folks that what they actually see in front of them is a very sophisticated wayback/time machine (if you’re as old as me you see Mr. Peabody & Sherman in your mind now...or look them up).

Isn’t that what these vehicles really are to all of us who own them & drive them. Think about it for a minute...when we get in our “old” car or truck and turn the key on, we really are transporting ourselves back to a happy time in life. We forget all the stuff going on in the world and our focus is on having fun and nothing but fun the whole time we are with our vehicle. These cars and trucks take us back to when we were younger (much

younger for some of us) and we didn't have many cares in the world.

We want that feeling...we need that feeling.

We use these old vehicles as therapy for ourselves. Having a bad day...jump in and take a 100 mile drive and when you come back home you are calm cool and HAPPY!

I venture to say that for most of us, the “old” vehicle we have now is much nicer than what we had when we were much younger. I know it is for myself.

When I am driving the 32 Coupe, I do think back to when I used to “cruise the loop” in my hometown and hanging out with my friends back then,...good time for sure.

Lions Inaugural Automobilia Class Honors Legends of Drag Racing

The Inaugural Lions Automobilia Foundation Awards Dinner and Silent Auction honored some of the brightest legends of the sport. The dinner and auction took place on December 3rd. The Ceremony honored the “Golden Anniversary of the Last Drag Race.” if you were looking to get a seat, unfortunately, it Was a sold out deal! The ceremony was dedicated to recognizing those who influenced Southern California Motorsports and inspired its car culture lifestyle. Drag racing legend Don Prudhomme joined Mickey Thompson, Ed Iskenderian, Vic Edelbrock Sr., and CJ Pappy Hart as a member of the first Hall of Fame class. Already a member of the Drag Racing Hall of Fame, International Motorsports Hall of Fame, the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, the SEMA Hall of Fame and recognized as a Texas Motorplex Legend, Bristol Dragway’s Legends of Thunder Valley and the No. 3 racer on the NHRA’s list of “The 50 Top Drivers of All Time,” Prudhomme feels this induction is a tremendous honor.

“I have been inducted into just about every Hall of Fame there is but getting inducted to the Lions Drag Strip Hall of Fame is special,” said Prudhomme. “There is so much history at that track and the drivers who raced there made drag racing what it is today. I have too many people to thank but I will say I appreciate everyone that came to the races, bought a t shirt and cheered us on when we were just getting started. For me Lion’s Drag Strip will always be one of my favorite tracks.”

The event also celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Last Drag Race at Lions and recognizing its winners: Carl Olson (TF), Tom McEwen (FC), Bill Bagshaw (PS), Jimmy Scott (Competition), Ken Veney (Injected FC), Ed Sigmon (Modified), Ron Zeolle (Super Stock) and Dave Benisek (Stock). Proceeds from the event and silent auction will go to support the Lions Automobilia Foundation Youth Engagement and Career Path Programs. Geared to engage students and young adults by unveiling the history of motorsports and car culture in Southern California and assist them in discovering the craftsmanship and passion invested in vehicle restoration, maintenance, and design.

“I have a lot of memories from racing at Lions Drag Strip. One of my favorites is when Mickey Thompson threw me out for doing a wheel stand,” added Prudhomme. “I was still learning and I did a wheel stand. He told me if I did that again he was going to throw me out. I ran again and did another wheel stand and he threw me out. Now I am getting inducted into the Hall of Fame there, that’s wild. That place was very cool. It was THE drag strip to go to. I remember (Don) Garlits bringing his rear engine dragster out there and beating all of us. Lions Drag Strip helped make my career and I am honored to be going into their Hall of Fame.” The city streets within the museum walls took fans and guests back to the grassroots as they entered the Lions Drag Strip time capsule and looked right at the starting line with cars in the staging lanes.

Yellowbrick Launch Online Car Design Class

YELLOWBRICK, an online education provider, and the Petersen Automotive Museum have teamed up to release a free online automotive course led by some of the top names in vehicle design, the organizations announced.

The program, called Auto Design & Sketching, highlights a path to a career in automotive design for anyone with a burning passion for cars and design, while mapping out a possible career in the future of transportation, the museum said. The self-paced online course features three modules: Design Principles & History, Famous Case Studies and Let’s Draw, which focuses on sketching exercises.

The course is guided by an accomplished group of automotive designers, program designers said, including Franz von Holzhausen (Chief Designer, Tesla Motors), Ralph Gilles (Chief Design Officer, Stellantis), Christine Feuell (Brand CEO, Chrysler), Francesc Arenas (Design Director, Hispano Suiza) and Roman Yneges (Faculty, Art Center College of Design), among others.

“We designed this course to simplify and illuminate a path to a career in automotive design,” said Justin Wolske, director, partnerships & strategic initiatives for Yellowbrick. “High-level training in this field isn’t always easily accessible, but we’ve removed some of those barriers by offering the program at no cost and involving an esteemed lineup of contributors.”

Auto Design & Sketching’s first module is available now, with the second and third modules slated for release in December and January, program representatives said. Participants only need to provide an email address and be at least 13 years old to participate.

If it’s Fathers Day weekend in Southern California, then its time for one of the BEST events anywhere in the US of A...The L. A Roadsters Show & Swap event. Once again, the 56th edition of this hot rodder favorite held at the Pomona Fairplex where it fills up most of the available pavement and grassy areas too. When you attend this event as either a participant or spectator, you wear your comfortable walking shoes for sure, and brig the sun block as you will be I under the suns rays all day.

This years show and swap meet followed the recently changed schedule of Friday and Saturday. This gives all the dads the chance to be home with their families and the response was great .

This time proven event is all about those roadsters! Roadster being defined as any car thru 1937 that does not have roll up windows in it. The most popular version is the 1932 Ford but there were roadsters of every year and color and style too.

This year, being the ‘32 Fords 90th birthday, a special area was set up to honor “THE DEUCE” and it was loaded with the iconic hot rod.

The LA Roadster swap meet is legendary. Held as part of the event, you did some serious walking if you walked every aisle. This swap meet is where some of the rarest or rare parts come out to be sold or swapped. Folks only come to this swap meet to sell and trade those hard to find parts because they know the buyers come looking for the good stuff!

Add in aftermarket parts vendors at the show all weekend, and you could almost build a whole car.

Thankfully the show is not just about roadsters. A huge specialty parking area was available for vehicles OTHER than roadsters thru 1972. Lots of cool stuff sitting out there too to check out.

Many hot rodders come in early for the event and in the day leading up to the show, visit many of Southern California’s hot rod and customs shops with more than a few throwing there own events in the days leading up to the big show.

Add in all that So Cal sunshine in June and it makes the perfect recipe for hot rod fun!

If you’ve never been, or its been a few years since you have attend this must see show and swap, make plans now for the 57th edition on Fathers Day weekend in 2023. Trust us when we say you will be glad you did.
