“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”
“Hey Hot Rod Teacher…what’s today's lesson?” History is a big part of this thing called hot rodding. Whether you like to admit it or not, as the old saying goes, “you have to know where you came from to figure out where you are going” For the past few years I have become more fascinated with the history of hot rodding. Whenever I see an article in a magazine, I start reading it and cant put it down until I finish it. I attribute some of this fixation with hot rodding history to a couple of magazine I subscribe to. RODDERS JOURNAL and HOT ROD DELUXE ( both awesome magazines and if you aren’t getting them I would tell you to, because your missing out on a couple of great publications.). When I get these magazines in the ol’ mailbox, I read them from cover to cover. They’re the only 2, I do this with. Everything about them just keeps me wanting more. I get asked “Why is that?” when I talk about doing that (reading cover to cover) to other hot rodders. For me the answer is simple….I want to learn more about this hobby, passion, disease we gearheads are afflicted with. It’s very intriguing to me to learn about and see how hot rodders in the 30’s, 40’s 50’s & 60’s modified or built their hot rods. Not only how they modified or built them, but where they drove em’, raced them and eventually showed them too. By today's standards, these guys did everything with very little $$$ and without the latest trick equipment. They built their hot rods with their hands and some basic tools. For their time in history, they were doing “state of the art” work. The other thing that is true, is they were good scroungers!! They knew where to look for parts they could use or modify and use. This was especially true after WWII. The hot rodders found a great 4

source for making their cars go faster….Air Corp / Air Force & Military surplus!!!! The current “big thing” in hot rods, is to build a “traditional style” hot rod or custom. Again…if you want to do this type of build, you have to do your homework on hot rodding history. If you don’t, the “traditional style” hot rod or custom you build may just be a bunch of “old timey looking” parts bolted on a car. To achieve that “traditional look” takes a lot of work to nail it!! The GEARHEAD GAZZETTE is sharing hot rodding history too. We’re sharing the HOT RODDING History from here in the Mid-South. Based on the feedback, a lot of you are liking this section of the GAZZETTE each month. The “HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH” series being written by Ed Woodard and with pictures from his EXPANSIVE Collection, is telling the history of how hot rodding got started on a bigger scale around the mid-south. Yes, there were always guys hopping up their cars, but it took some folks to help shape and guide the hobby into a direction. In these articles you can read and see how this was done around here. Everybody read about what was going on in California in those days and wanted to copy it where they were at. Problem was, not all the same things were available to the hot rodders in all area’s, so they had to change it up and improvise. Those “young guns” back in the 50’s & 60’s helped give us what we have today. Think about this for a minute…what you are doing today…hot rodding in 2012…is going to be someone else’s history lesson in hot rodding in another 5-10 years. “Hey Hot Rod Teacher…what’s today's lesson?”

QUICK HITS Hendersonville Cruise In kicks off on April 13th
Some sad news to pass on to everyone. Long time Memphis area hot rodder and all around great guy, Bob Young passed away on Feb 19th. A lot of you probably remember the 37 Ford Cabriolet that Bob owned that won both the RIDLER and a year later the AMBR Big Trophy. For Bob it wasn’t about the cars, it was about the people. Condolences to his family.
WE WANT YOUR EVENT PICTURES & STORIES If your club or organization is hosting a car show, cruise nite or other automotive related event in 2012, take some pictures ( use HIGH RESOLUTION or we cant use them) & tell us about it, and we will try to squeeze as many as we can in upcoming issues. Editors Note: Mike Gillespie sent this info to us about the 2012 CARS & COFFEE Saturday Morning Cruise-In. The Cruise will be listed in our Cruise Section for future reference’s. I am enclosing all of Mike’s info and comments and requests about this years cruise, as the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE supports the things Mike is asking all the cruisers to do when they attend. As you can tell by the location change, this Cruise-In has grown quite a bit over the last year.
Hey all, well, my guess that cabin fever this year is not as bad as in the past because we have had such a mild winter. But I am pretty sure you are still looking forward to getting the car out to enjoying doing some driving and hopefully to participate some Cars & Coffee gatherings. I case you have not heard, there has been a change in the Cars and Coffee location for 2012. In order to handle the growing number of cars, find an area with a little less drive through traffic and to have access to more food, coffee and bathroom locations, the 2012 Cars and Coffee will be taking place in the Carmike Thoroughbred 20 Theater parking lot closest to McDonald’s. The street address is 633 Frazier Drive, Franklin. Basically the opposite side of Cool Springs Blvd. than the previous site. The first Cars and Coffee will be Saturday March 24th and will run till midNovember. Starting time for every Saturday will be at 8am until the last vehicle leaves. With Bread & Company and McDonald’s being so close, it will be easy to enjoy a cup of coffee and breakfast food from either location. We understand that Bread & Company nominally does not open on Saturdays until 10am, but because we are going to be holding the Cars and Coffee behind the store at Carmike Theater parking lot, then they are will to see if there will be enough business to warrant opening at 8am. Therefore, I would encourage everyone to take advantage of the opportunity at Bread & Company. If you are a hard core Starbucks fan, then just hit the drive through on the way over to Cars and Coffee. Don’t forget to bring your folding chair so you can eat and just take a load off. There are two items of consideration that everyone needs to keep in mind;
1) There are no trash receptacles in the Carmike Theater parking lot, so it will be each person’s responsibility to make sure that they pick up their coffee cup, biscuit wrappers, napkins and other forms of trash and dispose of the refuse in the proper location. 2) Driving onto and exiting the parking lot PLEASE DRIVE SLOW AND RESPONSIBLY! The demise of most Cars and Coffee events has been due to trash and the what kind of condition the parking lot has been left in after the Cars and Coffee, then secondly, how participants drive into and out of the Cars and Coffee site. As I have mentioned before “testosterone and horse power is a dangerous mix”. Please enter the parking lot slowly, drive through the parking lot slowly and exit the parking lot slowly. Once you have left the parking lot and are on Frasier Drive, continue to drive appropriately. If you feel the “need for speed” and to “throttle up”, please at least wait till you are a mile away from the parking lot before you do anything. We do not want that activity to be associated with the Cars and Coffee event. I feel that all of regular participants are more than willing to help in this area. But we will also have to watch for spectators who will not have gotten this message and could create problems for the rest of us. I look forward to joining the rest of you on March 24th and kicking off the new year of Cars and Coffee. Mike.

NASHVILLE CORVETTE CLUB Words & Pic’s by Jimmy B
On a great fall day, the Nashville Corvette Club hosted their 2011 Touch of Gold Car show. The show was held on the grounds of O’More College in Franklin TN. A lot of great Corvettes came out, along with a lot of other hot rods, muscle cars and other great rides. This was a laid back fun show to be part of, or take in as a spectator. Great location, great weather and a lot of AWESOME cars makes for a great event.

“DO YOU DRIVE YOUR HOT ROD, MUSCLE CAR, TRICK TRUCK OR CRUISER EVERY DAY?? DO YOU JUMP IN YOUR HOT ROD TO RUN ERRANDS?” Back for 2012 is the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE’s “REAL CRUISER” contest. We’re looking for that guy or gal who “REALLY” drives their ol’ hot rod to more than just a show every once in a while. 2011’s winner, Elmer Jones of Clarksville showed us what “driving my hot rod” is all about. He won the contest with just shy of 10,000 on the odometer in the contest period. Are you up for the challenge?? Ready to put the rubber to the road?? Here’s what you have to do: Send us a picture of your ride. Send us a picture of you. A head shot is fine or more if you want. VERY IMPORTANT HERE: Send us a picture of your odometer so we can clearly see the starting mileage. Note: Your odometer has to work or you wont be part of the contest. This is the only way to make it fair for everyone who enters. We will verify the final odometer reading at the end of the contest. The contest runs until October 28th. We will remind everyone when we get closer to that date, to send us a picture of your odometer by a certain date to determine the winner. Send us these 3 pictures for your entry, between April 1 – 15th. Email them to us at gearheadgazzette@gmail.com . We will show all the entries in a future issue.
What you win if you cruise the most miles. There will be a special award made for the 2012 winner, a really cool GEARHEAD GAZZETTE Shirt and your ride will be featured in the GEARHEAD GAZETTE. This is all about having fun with our rides. Nothing complicated about it. A few simple rules. Now it’s your turn…we’re waiting for your entry in these years contest. Drive it like you stole it Gearheads!!

10 GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2012
In the last Issue, we covered the importance of using high quality chemicals to acquire the show shine, now we review the equipment that is necessary to accomplish that goal. We are assuming that while a lot of cars are garage kept and never see bad weather, there are those that’s driven to Rod runs and exposed to the elements that collect dirt as they go. With this in mind, we look into the washing and cleaning of the show car. Even if a vehicle receives the best owner protection, wind blowing dust and pollen at an outdoor event will build up potential damage by grime. This grime can cause minute scratches called swirl marks and spoil the quality of the finish. First, we clean the wheels and tires with a bucket of fresh water and soap. Thoroughly rinse the areas surrounding these, in order to flush off dirt that has been blown that way. If a wheel cleaner is needed, use that first to loosen any baked on brake dust. Toss this water out and rinse your bucket well. Next fill two buckets with fresh water, leaving one with clear water and one with your automotive soap. No dish washing soaps from under the kitchen sink. They have grease cutting agents in them and will remove all your wax in the process. The next suggestion is to use a grit guard in the bottom of the buckets to allow the gritty dirt to settle in the bottom and not allow the sponges or mitt to pick them back up. The idea is to use the soap bucket first and then the clear water for a rinse, before going back into the soap bucket.
Work from the top down in order to move the soap toward the ground as you rinse. This process is slow going, but if you have a dark finish with a lot of reflective power, you can avoid those ugly swirl marks. Let’s look at that grit guard and talk about the towels used for cleaning and drying. Here’s a photo of the grit guard and they will fit into most 5 gallon buckets. The towels must be a microfiber material and we caution you to not use baby diapers, bath towels or old t-shirts at all. The reason is that these products drag dirt or waxes over the surface making scratches as they go. The best example we can give is in waxing, you put the product on the vehicle with an applicator, after it has hazed, you polish off the finish with any of the mentioned cloths. These rags drag the residue across the surface causing minute scratches. The microfiber rags under a microscope look like Velcro with little fingers sticking up. These allow the residue to go up into the rag and not drag them across the surface. Get yourself a bundle of these and use a fresh one often. Throw the used ones in a box for the laundry and don’t use a fabric softener on them. That gums up the fingers. The same goes for the drying towel. Never use a leather shammy as it causes too much drag and pulls the softer waxes off the vehicle. These tips will help you obtain the crystal clear deep shine that is a show winner.
Since 1989, the Midnight Rodders have hosted their Annual Fall Cruise in Middle Tennessee. For 2011 they hosted a record number of cruisers on one of the prettiest, if not THE prettiest cruise’s in the MidSouth. The formula is really simple. Fill your tank with gas….meet at the designated starting point at 8am…make your “pit stop” and jump in your ride and follow the cruise route and have fun driving your “hot rod”!!! After cruising thru Middle Tennessee on a beautiful sunny fall morning, all the cruisers ended up at Manchester TN, where they literally FILLED the town square. Manchester's mayor came out to welcome the cruisers to town and thank them for coming out. Our good buddy Jeff Burnette & his crew from the city of Manchester made sure that everything went smoothly for everyone. If you haven’t been part of this event in the last 22 years, make plans now to attend #23 happening this fall in Middle Tennessee….we are.

HOT RODDING IN THE MIDMID-SOUTH Words & Picture’s by Ed Woodard Assisted by Hannah Woodard
This issue is the first 3 Auto Shows at the Tennessee State Fair…..with all the TOP DOG show cars of the time…….You name it we had it !!!....................................................# 5 Almost forgot something that took place at the first Tappets show that is worth mentioning. When Tommy Sanborn set up his 1957 Chevrolet convertible he built a neat display, so neat that Adam & Gene Hurt showing there two cars were not to be out done. They went home & pulled the carpet from their living room, tables, lamps, etc to build a display. It is amazing what a couple of country boys will do to win a display award. Well, that only started a small war. Bill Freeman, showing his Cadillac custom from Memphis topped that for a display, but cost him the “Best of Show Award”. Saturday night after the show closed he made arrangements to secure a large amount of flowers brought in to display around his already great looking custom Caddy. Sunday morning when the show opened everyone was drawn quickly to this beautiful display. He was certain to win “Best of the Show”, right up to the point of someone seeing the cards that were left on the funeral arrangements. It seems that the flowers were from the nearby Woodlawn cemetery. That cost him the “Best” award which was awarded to Floyd Wallace’s 1932 Ford coupe “Honey Bee”. This car has changed hands several times but it is in the hands of Pat & Buddy Jackson, where it has been for some 30+ years. I am told that the “Honey Bee” will be the car on the 2012 Nashville Goodguy’s Tshirt & mug. Small world after all ! Look close & you can see the floral arrangements!
I will have several flashbacks concerning the Tappets so just bare with me, but for now it looks like we are in the thick of show biz. I guess we had not realized how big of an undertaking this was going to be. To procure enough show cars to fill up a 30,000 square foot building for a week was no small task as show cars usually book in for only 2 or 3 days. Well we finally had things covered for the cars. Next was how to get the fair goers to come into the “Custom Auto Show”. Well we put signs up on the outside of the coliseum along with a continuous sound track with car music, like Little GTO, Wipeout and the Beach Boys, but the best was at the Grandstand show which we will tell you about later. 20
GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2012
HOT RODDING IN THE MIDMID-SOUTH cont. Well are you ready? If so lets see show number one in 1962! We placed those signs all around the building. It was a super neat way of advertising the show inside as you can see.
For our first Tennessee State Fair Auto Show we brought in the Golden Sahara built by George Barris as featured in the movie Cinderfella with Jerry Lewis and the Norm Grabowski’s famous Kookie Kar as seen on 77 Sunset Strip along with Cushenberry’s 40 and the Beatnik Bandit. Also featured was Jimmy Sanders Custom Buick and a Elvis Presley race car(we thought). This show had the usual hot rods & customs from Nashville along with a GM factory cutaway display. Enough show to draw & give the spectators their moneys worth. It went over pretty good for the first year. Actually it was a great vacation job from our regular jobs. Play with cars, watch the mule pulling contest, drive promotional new cars from the new car dealerships & make money too!!! The show was a hit at the fair being the largest single attraction at the fair. What was a real stroke of genius was after each grandstand performance we would bring the Kookie Kar out & make a pass around the deadly 5/8 mile high bank race track as it was at that time. It seemed that someone clocked the car at ½ second lower than the track record. Well this spurred the grandstand attendees to just follow the car to the nearby coliseum & see the auto show. Wow…long lines at both ticket booths….we were loving it!!!

Cushenberry’s ’40 Ford Radical custom
The second show at the fair put more attention to the local car owners to the point that we made sizeable cash awards plus a nice selection of trophies. We had a great turnout of entries plus a single feature car, the Lil Coffin from Carl Casper’s Customs. It was a good show too! We really stirred interest in street cars as well as racers when we offered cash money for top awards. Seemed like a good idea at the time but spectators really wanted to also see those feature cars. Paul & I learned a lot from that first show about promotional value. Taking the Kookie car out in front of the grandstand inspired us to build a similar car for sales promotion.. Paul located a Pontiac to get the engine & running gear and we had the specs from the Kookie Car. It only took a few months & we had it built, 6 Stromberg 97’s automatic transmission & promotion value out the wahzoo!

HOT RODDING IN THE MIDMID-SOUTH cont. cont.
Feature for the second show was the Lil Coffin For the 3rd show we combined the best of both. Lots of local cars along with 5 feature cars from Promotions Inc. Featured were Dean Jefferies Manta Ray, Gene Winfield’s Strip Star, Roth’s Road Agent, Car Craft Dream Rod and the Oakland Roadster Show winner King T by Tognotti. What a killer line up. This was probably our best show. On the outside there was all kinds of activity starting to brew. Street rods were starting to pop up everywhere with day runs just about every weekend. Actually my partner in the car shows, Paul Stargel lived directly behind the legendary Tommy Sanborn, who build a T-bucket roadster for the show. Street rods were getting hot around town as were the race cars like Pappy Greenfield, Bob Frensley, John Livingston just name a few. Darrel Waltrip and the round trackers were also getting national attention, which reminds me that during our State Fair Auto Shows we had a regular attendee on Tuesday mornings, Marty Robbins! Yep, around every corner hotrods were coming into their own…..I guess we were helping a little too !!!

The 1st Annual VOODOO HOODOO hosted by the Tennessee Chapter of the VOODOO Kings is in the books as they say and was a huge success by all measures for a first time event. A traditional hot rod & custom type event that featured a Friday night kick off party, for all those early birds checking in and registering. Saturday saw a cool, but nice day that saw a lot of cool rides showing up to be part of the HOODOO main event. Saturday night went on into the night with the TIKI Luau poolside at the event hotel. The VOODOO Kings would like to thank their sponsors and bands for all their help in making #1 a big hit with the attendees. Door prizes donated by Night Prowlers and Hawk Hardware. Music provided by the Treble Devils, Matt (from Shaky DeVille) & company, Bonnie & Johnny Harris, Jane Rose and The Deadend Boys and Rebel Surfers. HOODOO #2 is going to happen in 2012, so make your plans now to attend. If you missed #1…here’s what you missed!!!

If it’s the 1st Saturday in October, you know you will be able to be part of one of the largest one day shows in the Mid-South. The Battlefield Region AACA Car Club hosted their 22nd annual show in 2011. The weather was great and it brought out some very cool cars to the show. Add in a lot of great door prizes, good food and lots of awards and you know everyone is going to have fun. This show is the clubs big fund raiser every year, for their charitable donations that they do each year. The club is recognized in the community for their charity work and support to a number of needy organizations. Here is a small sample of some of the great rides that came out to the show. Make you plans now to attend the 2012 show, that is being planned now.
