“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”
What is your Car Company building today? Right about now you are going huh?? Roll with me here. The Automobile as we know and love it is 125years old. That’s right, a century and a quarter more. On January 29, 1888 a guy by the name of Karl Benz ( yea as in MB…Mercedes Benz) filed for Patent # DRP37435 for Benz Patent-Motorwagen. This was the1st commercially available automobile, as we know it today. Yea, there were a bunch of guys building cars or what they called cars, but the auto biz really started with good ol’ Karl. Since that day 125 years ago, a STAGGERING 2.485 BILLION cars & trucks have been built. That’s a lot of metal folks!!! “The Machine that Changed the World” is a book about automotive quality in manufacturing that was written a few years ago by some really smart guys, but that title means so much more. Angus Mackenzie, Editor in Chief of MOTOR TREND said in a recent editorial piece in MOTOR TREND, “ there is no better phrase to sum up the impact of the automobile on human society over the past century-and-a-quarter.” Now we all know, based on history that there have been many many auto manufacturers all over the world in the past 125 years. A lot have been started, but the ones still producing today is but 2 handfuls. Its not an easy business. If it were, everyone would be building cars & trucks. How’s your car company today? That’s right Gearheads, you have a car company. Didn’t know you run a car company did ya? You do. That 1or 2 or ?? Car garage is your manufacturing plant. Think about it…you sit around and talk to your bud’s and doodle what you want to build or would like to see on your next or current project. The BIG BOYS call this the creative or design phase. After you doodle, discuss & draw, you put together your list of parts you need to put the vehicle together, and figure out how much its going to cost you. The BIG BOYS call this the Sourcing Process, when they award supplier companies contracts to provide parts. You use MASTERCARD, VISA or CASH at a swap meet.
4
After you get some or all of your parts, you move into the mock up phase of your project. You do a layout on the frame to make sure everything is going to fit the way you need to fit. The BIG BOYS call this having a Prototype built, either in house or by a contract firm.
When you complete your trial fits, you stand back and smile. You are feeling good now, as your project plan is coming together and looking good. You are feeling so good about now, you call the bud’s over to show them the project up to this point. They come over, look it over, crawl around, over and under it, asking questions on how you did this and that, cause they really like certain features you have incorporated into your build. The BIG BOYS do this step too. The prototype looks good, the mock up trial build goes well and the FINAL APPROVAL is given to go ahead with production.
Now you get the rest of your parts, start final assembly, focus on your quality and fit and finish. You make sure your painter does a great job, the trimmer puts a killer interior in it and then its time to fire it up!! The motor hits, sounds great too. Break it in, do a wheel alignment, check everything out and give it another once over. You vehicle is built. The BIG BOYS call it Chassis, Hardware, Trim, Paint, Final Assembly & Quality Check. Your Car Company turned out another “too cool” ride…just like the BIG BOYS. If you need an investor in your car company , call me…

ROAD RUMBLINGS… By Jimmy B gearheadgazzette@gmail.com BREAKING NEWS : BOWLING GREEN KY: If you haven’t already heard by now, the GOODGUYS NOSTALGIA NATIONALS pulled out of Bowling Green and wont be coming back in 2011. Fear not Gearheads!!! There is a new event planned that will take place in BG in the fall timeframe that should be a BLAST to say the least. Get ready and make your plans now to attend the VooDoo Kings ―VooDoo HooDoo‖ Car Show. The event will be held at the Best Western Motel. Cool Cars (1968 & Earlier only), Live Bands, PinUp Girl Swimsuit Contest, Vendors and More!! Planning is underway for a kick off party on Friday Night too. Stay Tuned to the GAZZETTE for more info on this show. This one’s gonna be a BLAST!! Check out the ad on Page 2 of this months issue. AA/GS Comes to the Hot Rod Reunion. Info we have received indicates that we will see PERIOD CORRECT AA/GS Class cars at the upcoming NHRA Hot Rod Reunion in June at Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green Ky. These are the cars that raced in the heyday of the Gasser Wars!! All cars that will be racing will be pre-68 versions of the AA/GS cars. They will be running with no index or bracket. Should be a heckuva show!!! Sounds like BG Fuel Systems ( Barry Grant Carburetors) has fallen on hard times. BG Fuel Systems got hit hard with the economy, competitors & other forces working against the business. The company had file a Chapter 11 Bankruptcy petition to get re-organized. Apparently time caught up with them and now we understand they have filed for a Chapter 7 action. Chapter 7 requires total liquidation to pay the creditors. By all appearances it look like BG Fuel Systems is going to cease to exist. If we get word on an auction at BG Fuel Systems we will pass it along. Another speed equipment manufacturer bites the dust. OUCH!!! QUOTE OF THE DAY overheard at the Stones River Swap Meet from 1 of the vendors….‖ If I see them put their hand in their pocket and they bring money out of their pocket, they bought the part!‖ It was great seeing everyone at the various swap meets that took place here in the Mid-South over the past couple of months. Didn’t see a lot of parts leaving the swap meets, but more than in the last 2 years. Pricing Folks…its all about pricing, Speaking of swap meets, make sure to mark down March 26th on your planner. This is the date for the 9th annual Spring Thaw Bike Swap meet. ―Scooter‖ & his crew will be your host for one of the best bike swap meets in the area. Whether you are showing, swapping or buying, this is the event you NEED TO be at. HOT ROD POWER TOUR: We have been contacted by some folks that are planning to go on the HOT ROD POWER TOUR in June. Folks are wanting to know if anyone else is going too. The GEARHEAD GAZZETTE will help coordinate for anyone who is planning on going from the Mid-South, getting you folks hooked up with each other so you know who else is participating. If you are planning on going, whether it’s the FULL tour or from a stop in Alabama or Nashville, send us your info and we will get you all together to meet. Send us an email to gearheadgazzette@gmail.com with the following info: NAME / E-Mail Address / Cell Phone or other Contact # / Town you live in. We will pull together a meeting for everyone before the Tour in the Mid May Time frame. Come on Power Tourers we’re waiting to hear from you. Tennessee State Fairgrounds Update: Based on action by the METRO NASHVILLE City Council it appears that the State Fairgrounds has gotten a reprieve from being torn down. This just goes to show you the power we have as a people. When we join together, there isn't too much we cant do.. Even the racetrack has some breathe left in it. Thank you to all of you who fought long and hard to get this win for all of us. You made a difference. We are glad to here that our good buddy Brad Thomas from Columbia Tn is doing better these days. He has had a rough fight with the Big ―C‖, but the reports are he is doing good and healing up. Time to get going again on the salt car Brad!!! Some of the Gearheads need your help locating one of our own. We put our friend Dan Heichelbech on milk carton containers to try and locate him. Everybody thought Dan would be coming to the Hunters show in Nashville, but alas he never showed up. Rumor has it that his burnt orange with black convertible top 1st gen Camaro is up for sale. We haven't seen the ad but we know it’s a sweet ride!!! If you see him tell him to call us please.
And remember to tell em’ ya saw it in the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE cause THE FUN STARTS HERE!!

As we all know, and complain about, Uncle Sam & his Cousins in each of the 50 states, think they know what’s best for all of us Gearhreads. For once, here is a GOOD BILL in Tennessee that all of us need to call & write our Rep’s about TODAY. Don’t count on the other guy calling or writing. You need to do it right now and help our hobby and our fellow Gearheads. Please call today, it does make a difference.
URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT (HEARING UPDATE) Tennessee Bill to Exempt Certain Older Vehicles from Emissions Tests Scheduled for Hearing in House Conservation and Environment Committee Legislation (H.B. 688) to exempt vehicles more than 25years old from the state’s annual emissions inspection and maintenance program will be considered by the Tennessee House Conservation and Environment Committee on March 23, 2011. To qualify for the exemption, these vehicles must be registered as ―antique motor vehicles.‖ We Urge You to Contact Members of the Tennessee House Conservation and Environment Committee (List Attached Below) Immediately to Request Their Support for H.B. 688 For those interested in attending the hearing to voice support, the Committee will meet on Wed., March 23 at 12:30 p.m. at the following address: Room 29, Legislative Plaza Nashville, TN 37243 • Existing law only exempts vehicles manufactured before the 1975 model year from emissions inspection. Currently, annual emissions inspections must be passed prior to registration and renewal in the counties of Hamilton, Davidson, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson and Wilson and in the city of Memphis. • Existing law defines an antique vehicles as a motor vehicle over 25-years old with a non-modified engine and body that is used for club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, and similar uses as a collector's item; on the highways for the purpose of selling, testing the operation of, or obtaining repairs or maintenance; and for general transportation on Saturday and Sunday. • H.B. 688 provides for a rolling emissions inspection exemption that would exempt qualifying vehicles upon enactment and would pick up an additional model year for each year the law is in effect. • H.B. 688 acknowledges the relatively minimal environmental impact of older vehicles, such as the antique cars targeted for this exemption. • H.B. 688 recognizes that such vehicles constitute a small portion of the vehicle fleet and are well-maintained and infrequently operated. DON’T DELAY! Please contact members of the Tennessee House Conservation and Environment Committee immediately by phone or e-mail to request their support for H.B. 688.

GET INVOLVED NOW!!! Cont. Here’s another issue the Federal Government is involved in that has a DIRECT effect on what us Gearheads do. Do your own research, but the bottom line is, that bumping the allowable amount of ethanol to be mixed with gas to 15%, IS NOT GOOD FOR YOUR CARS. Even the OEM’s have raised a concern on this issue. They know the BAD effects that this 15% will have even on new vehicles they build, let alone the older cars & trucks we drive. The vehicle’s they build that can run up to 85% ethanol, have a lot of special components on them to protect them. Don’t just sit there reading this, pick up a pen and write a letter to your elected representatives, or send an email or call their office. They count how many people in their districts call or write, and pro or con on an issue. They use this info to make decisions. No feedback and they will figure this is ok to do. IT ISNT OK SO GET INVOLVED NOW or don’t complain later on.

The gypsy rose… A tribute to Jesse Valdez Intro: Jimmy B
This past January, Jesse Valdez passed away after fighting an illness. For those of you who have never heard of him or of his accomplishments read on. If you are old enough(I am) or if you have watched it in TV syndication, there was a show called “CHICO and the Man”. During the intro to the show, with the music playing, each week we would see Jesse’s artwork on his Low Rider…THE GYPSY ROSE. The GYPSY ROSE as it was named, is a 1964 Chevy Impala Low Rider that Jesse built. The car was and still is awesome. Everything about the car is phenomenal. The paint is what catches everybody’s eye but when you look at the whole car…really look at the whole car you see the master craftsmanship that Jesse put into his ride.
Jesse is the looked at as the father of the LOW RIDER segment of our sport.
of Low Riders, with the GYPSY ROSE leading them all, as it should be.
While Jesse is gone, what he created lives on as a tribute to him. It’s not just the car…it’s the whole LOWRIDER segment of our car crazy hobby/sport. There are folks today, building Low riders, but they don’t really know how or why all this got started. They just know the cars & trucks are cool and the like them enough to build them. Maybe that’s the way it should be…who knows. Jesse is looking down on all of us, smiling every time a new low rider comes out of a garage somewhere.
When Jesse got sick and his friends and people in the car biz knew the outcome was not going to be good, they thought about how to honor him in a fitting way. What they did was create a work of art for him.
What follows is an out take from a story on Jesse that was done in L.A. Calif. It will give you a better understanding about what made Jesse…Jesse and more on the start of the low rider movement. Enjoy…. The amount of hours that went into creating a one of a kind casket was unbelievable. No complaints from anyone involved in the project and it was kept a secret too. The GYPSY ROSE was part of the funeral procession too, and rightfully so. It was loaded on a “flatback” car hauler and was part of the very long line of

When he started tinkering with that old Chevy nearly 40 years ago, Jesse Valadez didn't have any idea he was creating a museum piece in his garage. He just wanted a cool ride that would attract girls. But things changed between those nights when Valadez was getting stopped by cops suspicious of any
long-haired kid in a car that rode inches off the ground and the days when they began pulling the balding, middle-aged man over to admiringly gaze at his automobile. Low riding is high art these days and Valadez, a gracious, soft-spoken man of 61 who makes his living reupholstering cars, is one of its masters. Continue reading for the rest of the story and more photos. "I had no idea," he says, standing on a corner of East Los Angeles' Whittier Boulevard where some say low riding was born. "I did say when I was building it, 'This car that I'm working on, people are going to hear about this car someday,'" he recalls with a chuckle. "But it never dawned on me that it was going to become famous." Known in low riding circles the world over as the Gypsy Rose for the intricately detailed 150 red roses covering its body, Valdez's 1964 Chevrolet Impala, with its velvet seats and its chandeliers, is one of the centerpieces of the Petersen Automotive Museum's ongoing "La Vida Low riding" exhibition. Surrounding it are some two dozen other tricked-out vehicles, including a pickup truck owned by musician Ry Cooder that holds an elaborate mural depicting the history of Chavez Ravine, the Los Angeles barrio shut down by authorities in the 1950s to make way for Dodger Stadium. Another is Dressed to Kill, a 1971 Buick Riviera with its eerie scenes of a graveyard at sundown. Its owner is Low-rider Magazine Editor Joe Ray.
"We call these the Faberge eggs of the car culture," says Dick Messer, the museum's executive director, as he strolls pass the rows of exhibits, pausing to admire each one. "They are so incredibly well executed when it comes to the paint jobs and inlays and gold leaf and silver leaf. There's an ice cream truck in the lobby, it took the guy 12 years to build." That would be the work of Mr. Cartoon, another legendary and somewhat mysterious figure who prefers to go by no other name. His day job is designing clothes and shoes, including several lines of the latter for Nike. Since 1995, however, much of his spare time has been given over to a dilapidated 1963 truck he recovered from a South Los Angeles yard, overhauled, lowered and turned into an airbrushed work of art. Every inch is now covered in tangerine, purple, yellow and other cartoonish
colors that depict clowns, balloons, ice cream sundaes and Los Angeles street scenes. Cartoon takes the truck to schools to show how it helped a kid from the street turn his life around and become a "homeboy homeowner." He's delighted to see it in the exhibit, which runs until June 8. "Low riding has always been the most lowbrow form of car culture," he says. "But out of it comes these beautiful works of art." No one seems to know exactly where low riding originated. Espanola, N.M., calls itself the "Low-rider Capital of the World." Still others will argue that it began spontaneously in suburban neighborhoods around Los Angeles after World War II. Others cite Northern California. "I don't think we'll ever pinpoint exactly where it started," says Denise Sandoval, a Chicano studies professor at California State University, Northridge, whose doctoral dissertation was on low-rider culture. "The reality is that it was popular everywhere in L.A. in the years after World War II. White guys were doing it, black guys, Chicano guys and they were all getting their parts from the same places." More recently, it has spread to Europe and Asia, with people spending as much as $100,000 or more to outfit cars with elaborate paint and upholstery jobs, lowered frames, hydraulics and earsplitting sound systems. The pastime began to migrate out of the southwestern United States in the 1970s, Sandoval says, when "Boulevard Nights," "Corvette Summer," "American Graffiti" and other movies and TV shows began glamorizing low riding. It's very different from the day in 1970 when Valadez picked his car up for $150 from a GI headed off to war in Vietnam and used sandbags to lower the back. Now people of modest means will spend a good part of a lifetime customizing a car. The Gypsy Rose can be seen in the opening credits of the 1970s Freddie Prinze sitcom "Chico and the Man," with Valadez at the wheel. "It's not dissimilar to any type of pop culture," Sandoval said. "Once TV and movies get interested in it, it becomes a big business." Not that some of the best examples can't still be found on the street. On a recent Sunday, some two dozen low riders have lined up their cars in the parking lot of a McDonald's in East Los Angeles, near the intersection that is said to have served as the inspiration for "Boulevard Nights." The temperature is in the low 80s, and the bright Southern California sunshine dances off the cars' flashy paint jobs. Among those gathered is Deputy Al Martinez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, who is prepared for the look of surprise he gets when he reveals his day job. Attitudes have changed, says Martinez, 46, from the days when he himself was getting stopped in his hot pink 1966 Buick Riviera. Most low riders have too much time and money invested in their cars to cause any trouble when they get together, he says, and most police officers know that now. For Martinez, becoming a low-rider was pretty much destiny. He'd inherited his car from his uncle. "I used to follow him around everywhere," he recalls with

Here at the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE, we like to help show off our readers rides. You have a deep passion about what you drive and you are proud of it, as you should be. We have always said, send us some pictures of your ride and we will show all the other gearheads what you are cruising in these days. Rod Reprogle of Lebanon Tn is the proud owner and driver of this award winning “HAULIN’ SS” 2003 Limited Edition Chevy.
Rod has the Victory Red paint shining a mile deep on his hauler. Smoothing out the lines is the LEER custom tonneau cover, painted in that mile deep Victory Red color. The pin stripping, custom bar grille, chrome mirrors and chrome exhaust pipes add that extra touch to make this truck stand out from all the others on cruise nite.
The 6.0 Litre LS engine from Chevrolet is cranking out 360 horses, to help Rod ―haul down the highway‖ these days. Add in the splash & Flash under the hood to dress it up and this is one great looking engine compartment.

“ rolling bones” winter open house Words: Jimmy B
Pics: Rolling Bones Hot Rods
“Rolling Bones” Somebody says it and right away hot rodders know you are talking about the Hot Rod Shop in upstate New York where some of the coolest pre-48’ hot rods come from. Recently on a snowy day in the middle of winter the “Bones” gang hosted an open house. The turnout was good, even with the snow coming down more than a couple of inch’s for the day. From the looks of it, some more cool cars are getting ready to come rolling out of the shop this year.

who sold the first issue of NSSN at Ho-Ho-Kus Speedway in New Jersey, and began writing for the publication soon after that and became editor in 1950.
End Of An Era: National Speed Sport News Ceasing Publication by NSSN Staff All good things come to an end. And so is the case for America’s Motorsports Authority, National Speed Sport News. After more than 76 years, the publication, which was first published as National Auto Racing News on Aug. 16, 1934, has printed its last issue, dated — March 23, 2011.
Economaki saw the publication through its glory days, launching a career on television and taking his newspaper into thousands of homes across America. In a time when there was no Internet and very little racing was on television or radio, National Speed Sport News thrived. When National Speed Sport News began its run, there were no seat belts, drivers wore leather helmets and the flathead Ford V8 was one of the most common racing engines. Today, safety is the utmost concern and HANS and other safety devices are all the rage. Fuel-injected engines are everywhere.
While hundreds of other newspapers came and went during the past three-quarters of a century, NSSN continued to ride the support of its readers and advertisers in producing the most thorough weekly racing publication on the market. But economic times have been tight and the newspaper business has suffered at the hands of high production costs and modern technology, which provides information to readers instantly. ―This is one of the saddest days of my life,‖ said National Speed Sport News Publisher Corinne Economaki. ―The sluggish economy has made it too difficult to continue publication and no matter how I try to make the numbers work — and believe me I have tried — it is just not feasible to keep the business going.
Chris Economaki at a race as a ABC Sports commentator
―For 76 years, since August 1934 when my father Chris sold copies of the first issue at Ho-Ho-Kus Speedway in northern New Jersey, to today, as I oversee the very last copy printed, this paper has been an integral part of my family,‖ Corinne Economaki said. Through the years National Speed Sport News was the industry leader in covering motorsports, much of it thanks to Chris Economaki, 90,

Not only has technology changed what fans see at the race track, it changed how NSSN gathered the news. In the early years most news arrived at the NSSN office by mail or telephone. Later the telecopier and the fax machine played key roles. Both were replaced by the computer modem and later by e-mail. NSSN was printed by linotype, but later changed to phototypesetting and finally went completely digital in 2002. But after enduring all these changes, a familiar friend will no longer appear at the mailboxes of its loyal readers. http://www.nationalspeedsportnews.com/ , the online version of the newspaper, will continue to be updated with daily news, giving Internet savvy readers the opportunity to keep up with some of the same news they enjoyed every week. But as far as the newspaper goes, it’s the end of an era.
