“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”
“Here’s where I am going to step into it now…” Spring has sprung…the temps are going higher each day and the rain is slowing down (you know April showers bring May flowers...) and outdoor car shows and events are taking place every weekend, depending on which part of the country you live in.
Don’t get me wrong…I appreciate the recognition for my ride, the same as anyone else. If somebody or some show or event thinks enough of my ride to give me an award. I take it for what it is…a recognition, with my appreciation.
Local car shows put on by car clubs and other organizations are kicking into high gear. The clubs and organizations use these shows as a way to raise money for charities for the most part, which is absolutely wonderful. Gearheads and Hot Rodders are some of the most “giving” people I know.
I am going to step in it a little deeper here now…
The other part of these types of shows, which is supposed to be different than the “big time / professional run” shows is more fun to be had. It’s smaller, more close knit so to speak, so it should be more fun right?….right??? In my opinion they are fun for the most part. Let me say right now, that I DON”T make it to every show in my area that happens. I do get a lot of feedback by virtue of the GAZZETTE. Does that make me an expert on the fun factor of these types of shows….NO, but like a lot of you I have attended my fair share and plan on attending more. One area of these shows that causes more “hurt” feelings amongst the participants, is the “AWARDS” portion of the show.
Here’s where I am going to step into it now… Awards, trophies, plaques, “dust collectors”, classes, etc…the one part of the “local car show” that causes more hurt feelings, in my opinion. Folks, the local car show is not about the trophy!! The local car show is about getting together with other gearheads, checking out the other cars and trucks, and HAVING FUN with your ride. IT”S NOT ABOUT GETTING A TROPHY. Your opinion may differ, and that’s ok. I am raising this issue…again…as its already raised its ugly head this year…and the local car show season has just started.

GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2012
If you come out to one of these shows, planning to win a trophy of some type, you are setting yourself up for disappointment right from the start. Each of these shows use a different method of judging or awarding the trophys…AND THAT’S OK!!! You need to ACCEPT that and roll with it. Whether it’s a “judged” show, “people’s choice” show or “registered participant vote”, any 2 of them will not get the same results. Don’t go crazy over the folks putting on the show if you didn’t win. This judging / selecting winners is subjective to personal interpretations or what the masses like. Read that last line
again please.
There is a time and place for that type of competition, judging and trophies. Join the professional organization, “The ISCA”, and take your ride to the shows they produce each year. They have designated classes, number of modifications, display points, etc, that keeps all the entries on a level playing field and judges them the same each week. This will take all the arguments of un-fair judging out of the equation…right?? A lot of shows, including GOODGUYS and NSRA have gone away from or never started “judging” or “awards by classes”. This makes it SO MUCH nicer for the event. Yes they give out plaques recognizing what they think are cool cars & trucks. Paint chips are ok here too. There are even some shows that …GASP!!! DON’T give out any awards. They take that money they used to buy “dust collectors” and they give more door prizes away!!! I LIKE THIS!!! For me…paint chips and bugs on the grille are ok and badges of honor…cause you’re driving your ride. The BEST trophy for me is a thumbs up!! Better than any old “dust collector.
Jimmy B.
“the fun starts here”….
Since the last issue of the GAZZETTE, the hot rodding and racing world have lost a couple of Icon’s and Innovators….
Chip Foose's 'Overhaulin'' to Return to TV This Fall
Bill “ Grumpy” Jenkins will be greatly missed. “Da Grump” helped create, define and re-fine PRO STOCK Drag Racing as we know it and love it today. The innovations he came up with are too numerous to mention in 1 small article. It will take a very thick book to highlight everything “Da Grump” came up with, designed & engineered, right up to the end. R.I.P. Grump…You will be greatly missed!!
Most knew him from his exploits on the series of Widowmaker Chevy V8 motorcycles he rode through the 1960s and early 1970s. Many knew him from his other creations, which included E.J. Potter “The Michigan Madman” a trike powered by a cruise missile engine several Allison powered cars, and a raft of nationally known pulling tractors that were called, the “Ugly Tractor” and “Double Ugly”. Today, there are no more EJ Potters because the world has snuffed ‘em out with red tape, lawsuits, bicycle helmets, knee pads, helicopter parents, anti-lock brakes, traction control, electronic stability control, and general enslavement to insurance companies. His loss is a true heart breaker for us and for the world of hot rodding as a whole. He was a crazy empirical genius of the type that are no longer manufactured. His passing signifies a sad end to an era in both motorsports and society where a guy with a crazy idea could make a hell of a living. “R.I. P. Madman….”
The vehicle restoration show "Overhaulin'" will be coming back to television, according to a recent article in Variety. The show, which follows iconic customizer Chip Foose as he performs major transformations on beat-up vehicles, was a big hit when it originally aired on TLC from 2004-2009. The show has been picked up by the Discovery Channel-owned Velocity channel. "I am thrilled to be returning to television with a new and improved version of 'Overhaulin," and especially excited to be working with the team at Velocity," Foose said in an interview with SEMA News. "Velocity is the perfect home for 'Overhaulin'' and I'm looking forward to shooting all-new episodes bringing viewers compelling stories of car owners who are surprised to have their much-loved treasures overhauled." Dept Of Correction’s: Our apologies to Butch Pate of P8 Photography. We did not correctly list him as having taken the photo’s we used in the VOODOO HOODOO show coverage last month. Sorry Butch!!

“Normie-Poo!!” Norm Grabowski is a bit under the weather. He is dealing with the cancer thing at the moment. When Ed Woodard & Joe Klinkhardt talked to Norm a few days ago, he is looking at an alternative treatment center to fight his squamous cell carcinoma, a form of cancer that created a lump at the base of his tongue and throat.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Norman as he goes forward. Norm Grabowski is an American hot rod builder and actor. The heavy set crew cut wearing Grabowski appeared in minor roles in many films produced by Albert Zugsmith and Walt Disney. In 1952, after leaving military service, Grabowski built a hot rod based on a shortened 1922 Ford Model T touring car mated to a similarly extremely shortened Model A pickup truck bed. With a powerful Cadillac overhead valve engine that came from his parents' sedan the vehicle that resulted had a unique appearance and stance which inspired many hot rods created afterward. The car was first featured on the cover of the October, 1955 issue of Hot Rod Magazine and then underwent further modifications, including a greater rake, tilted windshield and blue paint with flames when it famously appeared in color on the cover of the April, 1957 issue of Car Craft magazine as well as in the April 29, 1957 issue of Life Magazine. Grabowski's hugely influential T-bucket hot rod, which became known as the Kookie Kar, was used in the television show 77 Sunset Strip. The car was owned and driven in the show by the character Kookie who was played by Edd Byrnes. As a consequence of the magazine exposure, Grabowski was approached about renting the car out to appear in movies and television shows. The contacts he made in this way led to an acting career for Grabowski. He appeared in many movies and television shows, including High School Confidential, Son of Flubber, Roustabout, Girl Happy, and The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Grabowski is known as a wood carver, and many hot rods and custom cars feature his unique hand-carved skull gearshift knobs. He retired from acting in the 1980s after The Cannonball Run.

I received this obituary from a fellow old hot rodder friend from Colorado. He was asked to write this obit. for his best friend; as he knew him best. I wish I knew "Flathead". Michael "Flathead" Blanchard Blanchard, Michael "Flathead" 1944 ~ 2012 A Celebration of the life of Michael "Flathead" Blanchard will be held on April 14th, 3 pm 8160 Rosemary St, Commerce City. Weary of reading obituaries noting someone's courageous battle with death, Mike wanted it known that he died as a result of being stubborn, refusing to follow doctors' orders and raising hell for more than six decades. He enjoyed booze, guns, cars and younger women until the day he died. Mike was born July 1944 in Colorado to Clyde and Ethel Blanchard. A community activist, he is noted for saving the Dr. Justina Ford house from demolition and defending those who could not defend themselves. He was a Republican delegate, life member of the NRA, founder and President of the Dead Cats MC. He loved music. Mike was preceded in death by Clyde and Ethel Blanchard, survived by his beloved sons Mike and Chopper, former wife Jane Transue, brother Stephen Blanchard (Susan), Uncle Don and Aunt Cynthia Blanchard(his favorite); Uncle Dill and Aunt Dot, cousins and nephews, Baba Yaga can kiss his butt. So many of his childhood friends that weren't killed in Vietnam went on to become criminals, prostitutes and/or Democrats. He asks that you stop by and re-tell the stories he can no longer tell. As the Celebration will contain Adult material we respectfully ask that no children under 18 attend. Published in Denver Post on April 12, 2012 More GOODGUYS Nashville Nationals News: ROAD ALERT!!!!! 50 of most things is a very good deal. 50 years of “cool chrome” is a great thing!!! ADVANCED PLATING of Nashville Tn is celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary of making hot rodder’s look good with chrome plating. ADVANCED has been part of numerous RIDLER winners, AMBR winners and owner Steve Tracy’s 32”Ford Roadster is a Legends Cup winner too. Next time you get ready to get some “shiny stuff” for your ride, call ADVANCED PLATING.

Congratulations to Greening Auto Company of Nashville TN. They played a major role in this years DETROIT AUTORAMA RIDLER WINNER and the CHICAGO WORLD OF WHEELS LEGENDS CUP WINNER,1955 T-Bird. This is no small feat based on the quality and caliber of cars in the running as part of these competitions. Great job guys!!

DAVE BELL – Hot Rod Artist has passed away.
NSRA members don’t forget that Saturday May 12th, the MIDDLE TENNESSEE NSRA Appreciation day will take place. Terry Manlove is opening his doors up at T&M Steering in Nashville. Jim Profitt NSRA Safety Rep has a lot of cool things to see and do lined up. You say you’re not a member of NSRA? No better time than at Appreciation day to sign up and become a member. Sounds like a good crowd will be on hand including the MIDNIGHT RODDERS, Richard Jones of Richard Jones High Tec & Resto Rods and staff writer and historian deluxe…Ed Woodard. Sounds like a good time is getting ready to bust loose. See all the event info in the show section.
Hot rod artist Dave Bell whose cool black & white cartoon’s filled the pages of many magazines and posters for decades has passed away. Dave’s unique style of drawing was revered by gearheads worldwide. He had a monthly column in STREET RODDER Magazine. The “Henry Hi-Rise” section has been a favorite of many a hot rodder. Dave’s artwork can be found all over the hot rod industry. On a personal note, while attending the 50th DETROIT AUTORAMA, Dave was there in a booth signing autographs of the special Henry Hi-Rise drawing(s) he did for the 50th. It actually ran as 2 different monthly columns in Street Rodder, but he had them both as one poster being given out free and autographed. I asked him to do a quick drawing for me if possible he said “sure! What kind of hot rod?” Next thing I knew he had a car and me on the poster also. A true keepsake for me!! Dave is actually credited with coming up with the drawing that was used to create the famous “Cop Shop Coupe built by Tom Prufer. R.I.P. Henry Hi-Rise.

On the 3rd weekend in October last year, an event that was dreamed up by some die hard drag racers-hot rodders, led by Steve Gibbs with the NHRA, that was going to be a one time get together, has turned 20 years old. This is one of those events that you have to go to. When you do, you will “feel it”. Yes I said feel it, because there is drag racing magic in the air. The FAMOSO Dragstrip has changed somewhat since the first “SMOKERS” drag meet was held there many many years ago, but you still get “transported back” to an era of NITRO Breathing Front Engine Dragsters. There is a lot of other racing going on, all pre-72, but it’s the F.E.D.’s that are the kings of this deal!!! Born and bred in Southern California, they still bring EVERYONE into the stands and along the fence to see…smell and feel the horsepower. Are they as fast as the 21st Century versions….no. Are they cooler that the 21st century dragsters…HELL YES!!! Enjoy the picture’s but make your plans for your own “Go West” trip. You won’t be sorry…I promise.

THANK YOU!!!! On behalf of the Middle Tennessee Z Club, Nissan North America Inc., and all of our event sponsors, we would like to thank you for your participation at ZATTACK 2012. We hope everyone enjoyed the event, including the Nissan Smyrna plant tours, the private tour and dinner catered by Stone House Q at the Lane Motor Museum, and of course The ZATTACK People’s Choice Z Car Show and Cruise-In held at Nissan North America’s Nissan Americas building on Saturday. The weather was great, albeit a little windy, and the events came off as planned although we do apologize for the delay in starting the second tour at Smyrna. This is the first ZATTACK where multiple plant tours were offered, and the total number of people far surpassed our previous attendance numbers. We served dinner Friday night at the Lane Motor Museum for 132 guests, and we had 102 Z cars in the show on Saturday, which broke our previous ZATTACK record of 85 from 2009, which was our first ZATTACK show at Nissan. We raised $515 for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee through donations and raffles, and thank them for bringing the Nissan NV truck Nissan donated to them to display. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this great Nissan-sponsored charity. We would like to again thank our sponsors and the ZCCA (Z Car Club Association) for their support and supplying us with outstanding items for the raffles and giveaways, and congratulate the winners of those items. We hope everyone will consider those sponsors next time you need parts, service or accessories for your Z or other vehicles. We could not do this event without sponsorship, and these companies and organizations are very supportive of our club and the Z and Nissan communities, for which we should all thank them. We must also thank our friends at Nissan North America and their associates at Smyrna for their help and cooperation in putting this event together, and to the entire staff at the Nissan Americas building for their hospitality in hosting the open house, car show and Cruise-In. Their willingness to allow us to do this is remarkable, and it is frankly an honor for our club to be allowed to do these events at their “house”. Thanks to all of the volunteers from our club and our guests who pitched in to help us. We also appreciate the publicity our event received from the local media and through the local Cars and Coffee group, the Battlefield Region AACA club, the local online automotive magazine, Gearhead Gazzette, and the various forums and other Z and other car clubs throughout the area and the U.S. This was a true group effort, and we truly appreciate everyone’s help in making this our biggest ZATTACK yet! Most importantly we must thank our club members and our guests for coming together to make ZATTACK 2012 a great event. These events are about people that share a common interest and passion, and while winning a trophy is nice, it’s really the people (and their cars) and the camaraderie that make these event memorable. We hope everyone had a safe trip home, and really appreciate the distances that many of you covered to be with us. We had entrants from Ohio, Georgia, Virginia, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Alabama, South Carolina, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana and Tennessee. We appreciate the time and expense it took for many of you to come to Nashville, and we thank you for that effort, and hope you felt it worthwhile. We also hope you took some time to see a little of our city, and had a chance to get a flavor of why we’re called Music City USA. We hope to see you in the future at one of our events or the other great Z car and Nissan events held throughout the country.
With sincere thanks and appreciation, Bob McGehee and Randy Shemin Co-Leaders Middle Tennessee Z Club Nashville

If you are a Pontiac lover, and we know there are a WHOLE lot of you out there, the place to be last July was BEECH BEND PARK. The POCI (Pontiac Oakland Club Intl) sponsored 2 days of drag racing and show and shine car show coolness. Unfortunately some of the sunshine that came was in the form of rain. In spite of the rain, the show went on and everyone had a GRRRREAT time. Check out some of the great Pontiac’s that came out for a fun weekend.

_____“GARAGE & SHOP SCENE” _____ SEND THE PICTURES AND INFO ON YOUR RIDE OR YOUR FRIENDS RIDE AND WE’LL SHOW IT OFF RIGHT HERE!! SEND US YOUR SHOW INFO AND PICTURES AND WE’LL SHARE THEM WITH ALL THE GEARHEADS!!
It’s MOPARS in may in the Garage & Shop Scene Section. We’re taking a look inside Steve Millers Garage in Thompsons Station TN to check on the progress on his 34 Dodge Brothers Pic-Um-Up truck. Coming along very nicely and getting color on parts means its getting closer to cruising time. Speaking of Cruising and MOPARS, Stan Hardcastle’s INDY PACE TRUCK by Dodge gets driven EVERYDAY & EVERYWHERE!!! Now that’s what we call a REAL CRUISER. This is Stan’s go to work and then play on the weekend cruiser. Of course he as tweaked on it a little…just to make it run better…get to work faster from beautiful Nolensville TN. Looking good guys!!!
20 GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2012
Editors Note: If you’re going to the GOODGUYS Nashville Nationals, make sure to stop and say Hi to Sam & Ron at their vendor booth at the show!! Tell Sam what you would like to see in future article’s he puts together for the GAZZETTE.
Now that we have washed the vehicle and dried it with care, we turn to the next step in getting that show shine. The focus now is on cleaning old waxes and any oxidation off the finish. Please remember that we speak in general here, not knowing the condition of your finish.
cloths. Grab a clean one often, so they give you the best performance. Let’s talk about wax and polish. That terminology changes with some brands. The truth is, the word polish, means there is mild pumice in the product that acts as very light compound. Wax is just what it is and there are not any polishing compounds in there. Mothers Products offer a three step approach to waxing the vehicle. The cleaner as step one, a sealer glaze for step two and the final coat of wax for step three.
One problem for the show vehicle is a wax build up that will age and begin to break up. Any of them that get outside much will be contaminated with pollutants in the air and sun stress. If we suffer from any of these, the bright color of the finish will be dulled. Remember that the temperature of the finish is very important. If it’s too hot, the chemical dry too fast and bake on. If it’s too cool, they are stiff and don’t flow on well. Room temperature is just right. If outside, place it in the shade for about 30 minutes to allow a cooling down. I hope we impressed you with using microfiber products in your work and this is the time to use that technique. The applicator pad should be microfiber and same goes with the polishing
Pre-Wax Cleaner removes oxidized paint, old wax buildup and other contaminants, cleaning and shining your paint. This mild polish smoothes the edges of larger imperfections and removes small scratches. Your paint’s appearance is dependent on a good polishing. The sealer Glaze has two features; the glaze fills imperfections such as swirl marks and hides them by reflecting the light and tricking the eye into not seeing them. The sealers inhibit the pace of oxidation to give more life to your shine and protection. Step Three is the final wax and we will cover that after reviewing the Clay Bar, in the next issue. If it don’t shine, it ain’t mine.
HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH Words & Picture’s by Ed Woodard Assisted by Hannah Woodard
The fourth year of the State Fair Auto Show was the big change for all of us…some good & some bad….….the biggest show of them all…..the last show 1965………………….#6 Another FLASH BACK. Last month I neglected to include a couple of pictures of the 1964 show that included the five feature cars from Promotions Inc. Namely the Strip Star, the Dean Jefferies Manta Ray, the Car Craft Dream Rod, Ed Roth’s Road Agent & the Oakland Roadster Show winner the famous Don Tognotti King T. Additional picture of the Strip Star shows how a show car can attract large crowds during demonstrations of features.

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont. This was the year that changed everything in my life. Early in 1965 I secured a sales position with the newly formed Rayco Racing Division here in Nashville. I must give J.D. Eatherly credit for helping me & having confidence in me to launch my automotive aftermarket sales career. This was a far cry from selling office machines at the time. As it would be, I jumped into it on straight commission. Everybody thought I was nuts & I wasn’t sure myself. It worked out and I was doing pretty good. Timing was such that I finally talked my good friend Sam Compton to join me selling speed parts. Sam had been a friend & fellow Tappets member who shared interest in hotrods & customs. Now when it comes to tales of our adventures selling speed equipment, when that wasn’t such a cool thing to sell, well you will read about those times in FLASHBACKS. I remember the week before the Bristol drag strip opened, Sam & I were given the 50 cent tour by their general manager, Haskell Carrier. How they finished the track in one week I will never know as part of the mountain still covered the first 1/8 mile. How they got it ready in one week was a miracle. As for Sam, you can see him & his brother Ronnie at most of the larger car meets selling MOTHERS Products…the famous “Mothers Brothers”.
Bristol Dragway on the Mountain circa 1965. How many of you were there for the races?
The Karbelt dragster after a clutch explosion. Strange how things turnout, Karbelt in Canada is one of my accounts that I currently service at Holley.
Enclosed are several photos taken at 1965 Bristol for the first NHRA Spring Nationals & the Corvair van we used for sales promotions. Hanging up on the back wall is a Weiand 2x4 intake & now Weiand is one of Holley’s top selling brands.
HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont. Towards the end of 1965, I contacted several performance manufacturers and put together a deal to represent them in the southeast. They included Appliance Wheels, Ed Cholakian Enterprises, Cyclone Exhaust, ET Wheels & Weiand. While this kept me on the road almost all the time, it did provide a pretty decent income for me & my family. I guess this program did open some doors for me in my automotive sales career. I must thank my father, Al Woodard, for his guidance and help during this period. He was by far the greatest salesman I have ever known….thanks Dad!
……Picture of the Greatest….my dad sitting in the Surf Woody at the last Fair Show I guess we must get into that last Tennessee State Fair Auto Show. The show that changed everything for Paul & me. The show was for sure the best yet featuring the George Barris Surf Woody, Carl Casper’s “Ghost” and Ed Roth’s “Surfite”. The opening weekend produced pretty good number of attendees however the Monday night was really spectacular. After spending the normal over worked hours for set up and a long weekend opening I had located myself on the upper ramp deck on a chase lounger & had actually fell asleep. I am not really sure what time it was but I was awakened with someone shouting “FIRE”, the fairgrounds was ablaze. They were right! I woke up & looked straight up to see the inside wood ceiling reflecting the grandstand fire. I jumped up & almost ran off the upper ramp deck! I could feel the heat inside the building so I instructed everyone to get the fire hoses and turn the water on the outside of the building in case the wind shifted in our direction. That was working until the water pressure dropped, not because of the fire, because of hose deterioration. Holy cow, what next? GO TO PLAN B, not to take a chance of wind shift, we moved all cars out of the building into the 5-points parking lot, except one car whose owner took a front tire home, while showing the underside. What a night! Oh yeah, forgot to tell you my friend Sam Compton, went out on the back straightaway & took a picture just as the grandstand just as it fell & it made the front page of the Nashville Tennessean newspaper. Thank goodness there were no fatalities but the 1965 Tennessee State Fair was about over. The fair was closed Tuesday & Wednesday but opened Thursday. Really not much to see but our show, the large livestock and the midway. Attendance was “fair” considering that was our last State Fair
HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont.
As you can see by the fire there wasn’t much left to see at the Tennessee State Fair except the Custom Auto Show. I just noticed the sign on the right hanging on the fence is advertising our “Mild to Wild” Custom Auto Show in the Coliseum.
HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont. You might note the first Mid-South Street Rod Roundup in Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg was held in October 1965. If my count is correct I believe we had a total of 15 or so cars led by, you know who, Tommy Sanborn. Actually several 1965 attendees are still active in automotive interests like Homer McIntire and Lawrence Smith, who is the President of the Nashville Street Rod Assn. Also, Spivey Williams owned the neat go-cart track in Bowling Green KY until recently and has a Thursday night racing radio show in Bowling Green on 99.3 at 7pm. Of course riding with him in his roadster was Joe Lowery who runs the front counter at Tennessee Speed Sport in Goodlettsville TN. Another Nashville member, who later sold his Chevy coupe was David Sellers. This was the first of many runs to East Tennessee that continues to this day. The first 13 years it was known as the Mid-South Street Rod Roundup & was put on by the members of the Nashville Street Rod Association. Actually I joined the National Street Rod Assn, the year they started 1970 at Gatlinburg on the 5 th year of the Gatlinburg run. I guess you might say we helped start it all(Thanks' to you Tommy), In 1977 the Roundup was cancelled due to the safety risk. It seems as locals were taking advantage of the performance street cars.
Tommy Sanborn in his Roadster -1965
Tommy’s nephew Jeffery Sanborn now owns the car and has recently been rebuilt the 5th time. Sitting with Jeff is Jean Sanborn Smith.
FLASH BACK: I have located about 8 of the Tappets members. Sam & Ronnie Compton, Gary Baltimore, Stanley Young, Ronald McGhee, Paul Sanders, Stanly Haines(in Washington state) & myself. I will get into a details about the years following 1965 starting in the next issues of the Gazzette with lots of pictures too You just might be in one of them too……. …pics of the first Mid-South Street Rod Roundup near Gatlinburg TN On the way to Clingmans Dome near Gatlinburg…3 cars & one speed shop van.

From Our Readers Eye’s Editors Note: A couple of issues back, I threw out the offer to publish photo’s and stories from our readers, that they took at different shows and events they go to. Greg McClellan took a trip to Red Boiling Springs TN and checked out the 2012 Cyclemos Show. Thanks for sending this in Greg!! The offer stands…send us your pic’s and stories and we’ll publish them in an upcoming issue
Saturday morning I decided to take a drive to Red Boiling Springs and check out the hot rod/rat rod event at the Cyclemos store & museum. It was a beautiful day for a drive and an opportunity to see part of Tennessee I had not seen before. The entrance fee was only $5.00. I took my time looking at the customized cars, rat rods and items for sale at the swap meet. Attached are a few of the photos I took while there. Like I said, it was a great day for a drive in the country and to see some nice and some interesting vehicles. I also read the Historical Marker in town that talked about the Cumberland Trace used by the Cherokee and early frontiersmen and that Red Boiling Springs was one of the towns on the trail. Greg

A favorite pre-holiday car show in the Mid-South is the KRIS KRINGLE car show. It runs in conjunction with a holiday craft bazar at the Williamson County AgExpo Center in Franklin TN. The combination of these 2 different types of events works well. The car guys are happy with another car show to attend, and their spouse or significant can do early Christmas shopping. More than one guy was heard to say this deal was great as he got “points” for taking the missus to a craft show!!! Tom Akers and his crew of volunteers from the Bellevue Cruisers and other super folks, put on a great show. All those who checked out the show got to see everything from the early 1900’s to the latest 2012. Throw in the this years theme cars..”The Orphan Cars” those forgotten or no longer in business name plates, and there was something for everyone. They’re going to do it again in 2012 so make plans to be part of this fun show now.

Every year for the past 21 years, the NASHVILLE AUTO FEST has helped kick off the indoor show and swap meet season in the Mid-South. With something for everyone to enjoy, show, swap, car corral and more, the NAF has made itself a “must attend” event. The 21st edition was no different drawing thousands of gearheads and hot rodder’s to the Tennessee State Fairgrounds all weekend long. Here’s just a small sample of what you missed if you didn’t make it to NAF. They’re going to do it again in 2013, so put it on your to do list now.

Finish Line…. It’s June of 1929…your Model T Ford is 2 years old or older….and the post office is starting to deliver advertising info through the mail system. For something different this month, we’re taking a look WAY BACK!! Into our hot rodding roots. All these cool cars came from somewhere to give us hot rod building material. So what’s it going to be…new fenders? Axle re-work or a motor re-build?? Don’t forget…parts are extra.

Finish Line‌.
1914 Model T Ford Truck / Huckster May 31, 1927, the last Ford Model T rolled off the assembly line. It was the first affordable automobile, due in part to the assembly line process developed by Henry Ford. It had 2.9-liter, 20-horsepower engine and could travel at speeds up to 45 miles per hour. It had a 10-gallon fuel tank and could run on kerosene, petrol, or ethanol, but it couldn't drive uphill if the tank was low, because there was no fuel pump; people got around this design flaw by driving up hills in reverse. Ford believed that "the man who will use his skill and constructive imagination to see how much he can give for a dollar, instead of how little he can give for a dollar, is bound to succeed." The Model T cost $850 in 1909, and as efficiency in production increased, the price dropped. By 1927, you could get a Model T for $290. "I will build a car for the great multitude," said Ford. "It will be large enough for the family, but small enough for the individual to run and care for. It will be constructed of the best materials, by the best men to be hired, after the simplest designs that modern engineering can devise. But it will be low in price that no man making a good salary will be unable to own one and enjoy with his family the blessing of hours of pleasure in God's great open spaces."
