“our best days are ahead of us!” The New Year seems to bring a time of reflection for most everyone. It varies as to how much reflection by people is done, depending on them as an individual. Some people don’t do any and just keep looking ahead. No right or wrong…it just happens. I think by our nature as “hot rodders” , we do look back on more than one occasion. A lot of us listen to “oldies music” (90’s could be oldies music to some of us!) which most “graybeards” will define as 50’s/60’s. Think American Bandstand or sock hops in the High School Gym. Personally I think reflecting back has it merit’s. Taking a look at things you did that went right or wrong, helps us make sure we don’t do the wrongs again…hopefully …and to understand how to do the right again, the right way. As “car guys” we live in the now, when we are screwing together our latest project, as the time available to us and the $$$ available to complete our project is very much today. The interesting thing is, we are putting together cars that we saw in our younger days and wished and longed for back then. That memory never disappeared from our minds. Hence reflecting on the past. When we build these cars and trucks of ours, we go in a couple of different directions. One way is go “modern” or “high tech” or “cutting edge” as they say. When you do this, you aren’t looking back, but rather designing and building history. This is no different than the Barris Bros., Alexander Bros, Winfield, Watson, or Roth. Hell Roth built some way out wild stuff that was a car…but didn’t resemble anything close to a “regular car”. He did what he saw in his mind and set the bar at the time. 4

No different than today, when a Troy or Foose takes and creates a car that resembles…loosely… a production car, but is built with one off pieces and design that no one else has done. Then what happens is some “car guy” who has seen one of these “cutting edge” cars, back in the day, grows up, gets married, kids thru college and it’s time for them to build or re-create that car that influenced them some time back. Now we are looking back and reflecting and making plans to build that clone or copy or some variation of “dream car” we kept in our minds since our younger days. Moving forward while looking back. Sounds impossible but we “hot rodders” do it all the time. As I have said before, if you want to build one of these ol’ hot rods, muscle cars , customs or whatever you like, you need to understand how we got to 2013 in our hobby. If you want to get it “period correct” as some call it, you have to study the period and the cars that were built back then. Again…looking back to move forward. Bottom line for whatever you build, or buy to drive (and that’s ok too!), build the one of your dreams. You will enjoy it more than you can put into words. My belief is and my philosophy is “our best days are ahead of us!” We can’t change the past…the rules of life won’t let us. We can only learn from the past, and learning is a good thing. Think about it…what you are doing today, what you are building and driving is someone else’s dream. They’re going to look back to 2013 to build their dream ride…WOW!

The Debate Continue’s! We recently learned about an organization that is out there, that is catering to Pre-48 Street Rodders. Ever since the NSRA decided to go to a “30 year old or older” format for their events, some “hard core” street rodders who believe strongly in keeping events for street rods limited to pre-48, have chosen to skip the NSRA events altogether. The ASRA has stepped up to fill the need for these folks. We’re not buying or selling here. We are just letting you know that if you want to be part of an organization that is strictly pre-48 street rods, you may want to check the ASRA out.

We saw this picture on Kris Hendersons FACEBOOK page and we just had to share it. Most everyone know that Kris is a master at making used parts work again…in high speed applications. His 59’ Jag has exceeded 200 plus MPH on multiple occasions. In order to make that happen, you need to have “north of” 950 ft-lb of torque to push thru the 2 bills envelope!. Kris’s 1966 12 bolt finally gave up the ghost as they say…after multiple doses of 950 ft-lb plus torque on it. Kris says there still some usable parts here….we love it!!!

Here’s some info from the ASRA website on what they are about… American Street Rod Association is a group of likeminded automotive enthusiast who promote safe construction of and lawful operation of pre 1949 “only” vehicles known as “Street Rods”. The association’s focus is family friendly pre 1949 “only” vehicle events to foster an idea and information exchange, at the same time give the members a chance to renew existing friendships and forge new ones, and to promote the street rod hobby to a new generation of future street rodders.

Last issue we told you about Tim Sloan of Columbia TN hitting 206mph plus at the ECTA meet in Wilmington OH in 2012. Tim is working on the SATURN Coupe to see if he can squeeze some more out of it and we are betting he can! Here are a couple of short videos of the “Silver Streak” in action at the ECTA event. For all of you who hit the Murfreesboro TN Friday Nite Cruise in 2013, those donations you made to the club have been put to good use. The MHRC recently handed out $$$ to some needy charities and organizations. The ROOM AT THE INN, WEST MAIN MISSION, THE JOURNEY HOME and LIGHTHOUSE MINISTRY – SMITHVILLE all received generous donations from the MHRC. If you didn’t make it to the 7th Annual REDNECK RUMBLE, you missed a great event. You can’t call it a show because it’s so much more than that. Ask me to define what it is and there isn’t enough space here to do it. You have to ‘”experience” it to understand what I am talking about. It’s a blend of traditional style hot rods & customs, rat rods, car show, swap meet, bike show, music show, cruise nite and more! In the last article, we had completed the exterior polishing and waxing and covered the car for the next event. OK, that day has come and we roll it out into the sunshine for a trip to the cruise in.

During that trip, we collected some road film, bugs and finger prints on the finish. It’s lost the perfection from when we pulled out of the garage. We have no water to clean up, but don’t need it. This is where we need a good auto detailer. Mothers “Showtime” is designed to handle this job safely and quickly. Spray Showtime on an area at a time and wipe up with a microfiber cloth, turning often. It also leaves a wax booster on the surface for that show shine. It comes in a 16, 24 oz. bottle and a gallon. Keep Showtime on hand at all times.

There’s still a couple of other task left before it goes on display. Those bugs and road film got the windshield too. Mother’s glass cleaner contains no ammonia and with a microfiber cloth it cleans it to a crystal clear finish.

Now we turn our attention to the wheels and tires. Detailer and a microfiber cloth will clean up any road grime and dust. For the tires, a fresh application of tire dressing will do the trick. We use a cotton applicator pad to wipe the dressing to even it out and clean up any excess. There is also a dressing available for those that want that natural look with a low shine. HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH Reflecting on my friend Norm…. Well I guess I should say something in regards to my friends passing…………. It is difficult to accept Norm’s passing when help was so close. The fact was, the doctors told him what would happen to his body & the time table, which was very accurate. In less than 8 months he was gone, that’s it! I just cannot imagine he really believed coffee enema’s, fresh vegetables & fruit would cure cancer. Who in the world would convince him of that philosophy? I hate to say it but that really did make sense if you understood Norm and some of his past decisions. He was always an optimist concerning his life. He really felt that he could overcome anything if he put his mind & body in motion to resolve the problem. A perfect example was when he almost lost his right arm in the roadster accident a few years ago. After the doctors worked to repair the badly mangled arm he worked at restoring full use of it. If you ever shook his hand you knew he had regained all the strength, plus some. When Mary, his niece, called me early on October 12 morning I knew he was gone. He did however acknowledge, the day before his passing, to one of our inner group, that he had made the wrong decision. I guess this is enough about my friend as it will not bring him back. We miss you Norm, every day! I am going to share some lighter times with Norm in our travels as I think that would be the way he would want to be remembered. I am quite sure that many others could provide other similar stories about the life & legend of our friend Norm.

Mid-South Street Rod Roundup at Gatlinburg 1975. It seems that Norm was in attendance & had his Henway setup in the swap meet area whereby a very attractive young lady got caught up in Norm’s flirting way & made the mistake of drinking some of the Niagara wine that Norm offered her. It wasn’t long before they were riding off in the sunset in the Henway. Gone for an hour or so & finally turned up at her motel where she had consumed too much wine. It wasn’t so bad until her boyfriend approached the room just as Norm was exiting the room. Nothing improper happened, but we never saw Mike Goodman with Sissey at any other events. She was at the G’burg event the next year where a few smiles were exchanged with Norm, as seen in the photo! Hmmmm!

Norm was always willing entertain kids as seen in the picture that was taken on a trip to Winston Salem in about 1976.

Almost forgot the McDonalds story where we stopped to have breakfast. It seems that it was opening day of this McDonalds & everyone was somewhat confused with the basic procedures. Well this is not a very good situation if Norm was in the building. If any of you ever heard Norm’s Woodard Historical Collection

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont. whistle you will know the tone range he could achieve. Amazing that the french fry ready alarm was dead on Norm’s tone range. You starting to get the picture yet, it gets better! The employee would dump the fry’s & hang it up empty then Norm would copy the alarm, employee would check the fry machine & it would stop, then they would walk away & Norm would copy it again. This went on for several minutes and as we were leaving they were taking the fry machine apart. This was typical for Norm wherever he went. Did I ever tell you the story about Mother Rutherford? It seems that during this period I was working on a roadster of sort at my friends house and traveling with Norm to a few shows he convinced me to go to and come up with a story line to go with my car. It seem that this historical car was located in Loon Lake area above Saskatoon Saskatchewan in Canada. It was made up of parts that came from the Rolls plant in the Northeast U.S. Sort of like the Johnny Cash, 1 piece at a time car. The employee would back door this and that & bring the parts to his mothers place in Loon Lake while on vacation. Norm & I would weave this story any time we were together, even though the car is long gone. Check out the picture……

I am not sure what year it was when Norm joined us at the SEMA show but we all remember the calamari episode. Never have I ever seen anyone so sick. It seems that the only 2 of our group that consumed the dreaded calamari were Norm & my adopted stepson Brian. You can see Norm doesn’t look very well that morning. You mix bad seafood & to many Vodka tonics & you have a problem for sure. The SEMA shot before the sick day is Johnny Freund from Hunter’s Custom & Norm showing off some “Skulls”.

Something else that I must say about Norm concerning building cars. He would always push you to invent or design originality into everything that had to do with car building. Never copy anyone’s ideas, invent your own concepts. While expensive one off high dollar street rods would always get attention so would low budget Grabowski creations. His unlimited creative ideas, I am sorry to say, are gone forever. Just like this picture of his late friend Trapppulling carpet from this dumpster thinking what in the world are they dreaming up now. Later that morning over breakfast is when he told me the story that when you sell your car “you sell your soul”. I think he was right. We all need to think outside of the box when building cars and trucks. Think about our friend Norm as you are creating that next ride, I will bet he will be looking over your shoulder!

The Limo Driver Norm & Trapp pilfering the dumpster in Nashville

A good friend of mine Ed Cholakian (The Cadillac Guru) reminded me of the wrecked Cadillac that Norm picked up from his brothers limo service. Cholak told me I wouldn’t have believed he drove it back to Arkansas. I told him not only did I believe it but I had pictures. It seems that Norm’s brother had a limo service in Beverly Hills and one of his drivers rolled a limo. Then along came Norm. Get the picture yet? Well, Norm secured the badly damaged limo & drove it to Lead Hill AR without repairing it or I should say with a slight Polish overhaul…………We tried to polish the dents out with some Meguire’s A-12, however the car was too far gone. Not sure what happened to the car but after seeing it but who cares! One thing for sure, Norm had some sort of plans for it but he never revealed them to me.

A little more about my friend Ed Cholakian who must have all the Cadillac parts of the 40’s. He got his start selling t-shirts with manufacturers logos on them way back in the 60’s. Also was the first source for VHT high temperature paints not to mention a very high quality chrome accessory line. Cholakian was often seen at swap meets in the east collecting Caddy parts and from his parts room it looks like he secured all of them

There is a group of us that stayed in pretty close contact with Norm & would share his adventures after making a show. It was always a treat to keep abreast of his latest project, whether truck, car or skulls. One thing for sure we would always end the conversation with a smile on our face. I remember talking to him early on just after he found out about the cancer. I was wanting to bring him in for a fall promotion in Nashville & he said he didn’t think he could make it. I think down deep he knew how it was going to end! It was amazing that he passed away a week before the meet I was going to get him to come in for……

Over in Lebanon TN, Shawn Cook is working on his “Old Navy” Chevy truck. He is keeping the “Straight 6” for motorvation, and we like that!. He has the chassis looking good too. We’re liking the “Lipstick Red” interior a lot. If you look close, you can see a 1965 Chevy Impala rear seat center speaker fit into the bench seat…BITCHIN’! As Shawn gets it further along, we’ll give all of you an update on this cool ride.

GOODGUYS and INDY…they just go together. The GG crew has been bringing their brand of “hot rodding” fun to the “Circle City” for a many years now. They know what works and what doesn’t. With the move to the “Brickyard” to hold the whole event, it just got that much better. How can you beat being right in the middle of all that “gearhead history”. Besides the “show & shine” , you have a big swap meet, lots of vendors, add in the track cruise and the days are getting full. The big award for the weekend is the HOT ROD OF THEYEAR. The competition is always very tough. This year, Tom Gloy from Lake Tahoe NV took home the HROY award. Check out his roadster elsewhere in . this issue. Goodguys will be back in Indy in 2013, so make your plans now to head to the Brickyard for some serious hot rod fun!

In this thing called “hot rodding”, there are some awards that are coveted when you win it. One of these is the GOODGUYS Hot Rod of the Year Award given out at the Goodguys Indy event. This one requires more than just a pretty face. You have to drive it…and not just a few feet. For 2012 Tom Gloy is the owner of the 1932 Ford Roadster that is the GOODGUYS HROY. Tom is no stranger to driving and driving fast. His racing career spanned more than 25 years. He

won a Trans Am World Championship, a Formula Atlantic title as well as driving in 6 Indy Car races including a start in the 1984 Indy 500 finishing 14th. Tom enlisted master Hot Rod Builder Roy Brizio to help put the Deuce Roadster together. They filled it with FORD 302 / 5spd, red leather and a whole lot of cool stuff to make this one cool driver! Remember we said you have to drive to win this award…well Tom strapped in and drove the blue roadster over 2,000 miles from his home in Nevada to Indy. Pretty cool eh? YES!!

As we showed you the past couple of months, in this section of the magazine, there are a number of really cool rides in the Middle Tennessee area. We’re back this month with another cool ride from Columbia TN. Being located in this area of the USA, we have the good fortune of having RTM Productions in “our neighborhood” as some would say. Accordingly, some of these good looking vehicles are fortunate enough to be featured on the various RTM shows and POWERBLOCK TV. Such is the case with this cool Challenger, a.k.a. “HOT SAUCE” David Bernath is the proud owner of this SMOOTH MOPAR. David was part of the shoot, of his cool ride at the studio. Looking at hundreds of vintage NASCAR photos from the late 60’s revealed some cool looking paint schemes. Nothing even close to today’s custom wraps but still cool. My take away from all those pictures was that almost any basic two or three color paint scheme was acceptable back then.

In the first two installments we introduced you to our project car; a ’69 Fairlane 500 formal roof, the team (and our support wives) along with key elements of our plan. This month, we are going to dive into a little more of the planning and show you some of the wrinkles and imperfections the old girl is showing and what we are doing about them. Plan Your Work. Then Work Your Plan Anyone that has ever built or bought a large scale project like a house, office building, or manufacturing facility knows how important it is to define the space, layout its design, specify the contents and so on. Poor planning results in changes caused by fitment issues, color, design, materials etc. and drives up cost. Planning a hot rod is no different. As you have no doubt witnessed in the TV car builds, it starts with an assessment of the project then a team leader conveys the design thoughts to an artist. Chip Foose for example. Then the artist works with the designer to refine the project. Ultimately, the result is a peek into the future and something to look forward to as long as the plan is followed. The larger benefit is the cost savings. It’s always more costly to re-do a job than to do it right the first time; like choosing the color. No one wants to paint a car twice just because the color doesn’t look just right. Paper and ink are much cheaper and faster. It’s these early decisions that can make the difference between an amazing project car and just another nice ride. Our assessment revealed Grandma has cancer. But the cancer was not serious and could be cost effectively cured. More detail on that later. The good news was we have a car that is worth keeping. Now the question was the design.

Keeping in mind we are using a body that was not used in NASCAR racing, this gave us the opportunity to apply creative license to Grandma and build something special and different but that looks very familiar. To get there, the common external visual queues found on all the ‘60s NASCAR racers would need to be incorporated. Things like: No Headlights No Taillights Roll Cage No Interior Huge Slicks Basic Seats Side Exhaust Factory Bumpers Flared Fenders Sheet Metal Dash Front Spoiler Rear Spoiler Loud Paint Big Numbers Sponsor Decals Side Fuel Filler Obviously, some of the visual queues we want on Grandma run against what Barney Fife would like to see on a street legal car. Compromises will need to be found. Putting Pencil to Work This is the part where I tell you how valuable it is to have a professional artist, with car experience, create a rendering for your project. Several hundred dollars to use the time and talents of a professional will easily return the investment in saved time and changes. Plus, with the right artist pushing the pencil, you can make changes along the way inexpensively trying ideas to truly get what you are looking for…because as you start seeing what you envisioned, things will change. I promise. A good example is the sketch we teased you with in the first issue shown on the next page. It was an early draft that Pencil sent us to see if we liked the perspectives before he started refining and incorporating elements we discussed in the list above. Notice the rear spoiler and the lack of front spoiler. No cage, the wheels are shallow and there is a rear marker light we don’t want. Racecars don’t have side markers. Pass the eraser please. Because LEDs are becoming more main stream, they are getting really inexpensive. A search online revealed tons of choices. But what will work and where will we put them? The Fairlane has a body line across the trunk lid just above the key that is raised about 1/8 of an inch and is about one inch wide. Below is a close up. Chrome trim used to lay there.

At this stage with your final desired look in mind, you want to look at things like how the body lines are drawn. In the final rendering, how these lines appear will make a difference.

Confirming availability of an LED light that contained a two circuit LED set up for taillights and brake/turn signal, we had the design incorporated into the rendering by Pencil.

Pretty cool place to hide the LED’s isn’t it? Cut holes to fit the LED’s, weld studs on the back side and mount the lights flush with the surface. Since the back will be satin black, the dark red lights should hide pretty well until you need them.

Next we got this rendering. Here it’s really starting to look like a race car. But, there are still several things not quite in line with what we were looking for. The wheels are still shallow, the flared fenders aren’t showing, and lots of other details. Pencil only sent us this one perspective. Again, he was letting us get comfortable with the design before he put the time into both perspectives. In this version there are actually four paint colors: blue, black, silver and an orange pin stripe between the black and silver. Notice the Goodyear slicks. This is also the first time we see a hint to one of our street legal issues. With the taillights blocked off with aluminum panels, we needed a creative solution for taillights.

Taillightking.com: 9/16 tall and 12 inches wide $25ea. Another benefit for us is LED’s respond faster than traditional incandescent bulbs when voltage is applied. When you’re traveling 40 mph you are covering 58.6 feet per second. Since LED’s illuminate 200ms or .2 seconds faster than incandescent bulbs, LEDs give the driver behind you an extra 12 feet to stop. That’s over half a car length of time at just 40 mph. Unique and safer than stock. We’ll take that.

With the design making great progress, it was time to get back to Grandma’s cancer. Her cancer, as the doctors would say, is localized and treatable.

We started by disassembling the old girl then carefully blasting the worst looking part; her engine compartment and front end. Just to make certain her bones were still in good shape. The old mid-size Fords, Mustangs, Falcons, Fairlanes, Torinos, Rancheros, utilize unibody construction. Essentially sheet metal is formed as part of - and incorporated into the body. These early Fords don’t even have a small front sub-frame like the mid-size Chevys do. These were the early days of unibody construction so they are weak and susceptible to corrosion. Not the same quality as modern unibody cars especially if you are going to push them hard. They tend to bend and break. We will fix that weakness in a coming issue.

Our wet sand blasting session, limited to the engine compartment, revealed no new weak spots. Just the battery box and a small spot on the radiator support. Wet blast? Yes, using a pressure washer and an accessory from GeneralPump.com. No dust!

thing recommended to treat bare metal. It’s sandable, paintable and tough. Get it at the local hardware store and keep some in a spray bottle nearby. Use it on all your bare metal before paint. All in, we found cancer in both rear quarters behind the wheels, passenger rear floor pan, small portions of both the driver and passenger front floor, battery tray, both sides at the bottom of the back glass, two holes in the roof from the vinyl top and a small spot in the bottom of the passenger front fender. Lots and lots of iron is the cure along with some oxygen and argon.

Rear window rust can be a challenge. Replacement panels are not available and custom forming the multiple contours in heavy gauge steel can be tough. With the back window in bad shape, it had to be done right ‘cause racecars don’t have vinyl tops!

Both sides were equally rotten. Yes that is plumbers putty in the holes. It was just a temporary fix to keep water out while the car was stored under a tarp for several years.

The battery box required a slightly different approach. First we looked at using a commercially available replacement panel. An easy $200 plus shipping and tax. Not so fast. This is a race car (well it wants to be) and batteries are not in the engine compartment on racecars, they are in the trunk or the passenger compartment in the case of late ‘60’s NASCAR’s. Time for a creative solution. First, carefully remove the cancerous tray. Center punch each spot weld and using a spot weld cutter, relieve each spot…thusly!
