Don’t Lick the Frogs

Most people’s thoughts when stumbling upon a frog or toad do not include how it tastes, but lately that very thought seems to be on the minds of many adolescents.

The National Parks Service issued an announcement last November, reminding folks to not lick any of the animals found within the parks, including the amphibians.

“As we say with most things you come across in a national park, whether it be a banana slug, unfamiliar mushroom or a large toad with glowing eyes in the dead of night, please refrain from licking.” the park service said in a Facebook post.

Many youngins believe that licking these toads and frogs will give their brain a psychedelic reaction. When asked if they would

participate, many freshmen at Chardon High School said they would partake, while older students and staff claimed they wouldn’t. It seems that as the age of the people interviewed increased, the less appealing the idea of licking a frog seemed to be. Sophomores Brady Malec and Ceci Farina said they would not get in on the action and thought the idea was strange and unsanitary. The staff members agreed.

“That sounds extremely unsafe and unhealthy,” said Coach Cam.

When asked about her thoughts on the matter, Chardon science teacher, Doc. Schneider said, “Cats and dogs throw them up when they eat them because the outer covering of frogs andtoads is poisonous and has a neurological toxin that

causes them to throw them up. So, you probably shouldn’t be licking them.”

Most adults with fully developed brains and even most underclassmen can

agree that licking anything, especially a frog, with no real knowledge of the effects is a poor choice in action. So, as a gentle reminder, please, don’t lick the frogs.

Haidyn Bunker Competes In Youth Olympics

The Olympics. A once-ina-lifetime opportunity. Years of training, hard work and dedication culminating in an edge-of-your-seat, nail-biting fight for gold. For 99.9% of people, the Olympics are a

pipe dream. For most it’s a fun event on NBC every two years, watching athletes at the top of their game, but that’s where it ends. Not for Haidyn Bunker, a freshman at Chardon High School and a varsity girl’s soccer player. She

to the word ambitious and is racing for gold in doubles luge for the Youth Olympics.

What is luge? Bunker explains, “Luge is known as the fastest sport on ice. You lay on a fancy looking sled, feet first, and use candy-cane-looking runners to help steer. (You need) a good core, strong muscles and a fast reaction time to be successful.”

There aren’t any luge tracks in Chardon. The one nearest is as far as Lake Placid, New York so getting into luge required a lot of travel.

“My family and I were watching the 2018 Winter Olympics on TV when we saw an ad that mentioned a slider search. We were very intrigued, so we dug deeper. This later led us to find a slider search in Columbus where I took a luge sled

but with rollerblade wheels instead of steels down a road. I had a blast and left thinking nothing of it.” Bunker said. What seemed like a simple family trip snowballed into a lifestyle. “A couple of months later, we got an email from USA Luge inviting me to come up to Lake Placid, NY, to stay at the Olympic Training Center. I went and had the time of my life. Then in March, I was invited once again to go to Lake Placid and train with the team. I happily accepted and learned so much during the week I was there. On May 1, 2019, I was welcomed to the team, and for the past couple of years, I have grown as a person, slider and teammate.” Luge is played all over

the world. “My home track is in New York, but I have been to many more. I’ve been to Park City, Utah; Sigulda, Latvia; Bludenz, Austria; and Whistler, Canada. Next, I am heading over to South Korea for the first official training for the Youth Olympics. I am super excited to see

the track and the wonderful culture they have over there but dreading the travel days,” said Bunker.

Haidyn and her teammate Goldie Miller are already making waves. They won gold in the FIL (International Luge Federation) North American Continental Cup in Whistler, BC on the January 14th.

Soon Bunker will be standing on a stage with gold around her neck, but until then Park City, Utah is next on the road.

A Long Line of Lebron Lies

Lebron James has led a coveted 20-season NBA career. Outside of playing basketball, James does many other things like reading, watching movies and listening to his favorite songs. Lately, people on social media have picked up on James “lying” about certain activities or things he has done. None of the Lebron James “lying” moments can be proved as lies, but they just seem so close to a lie that the internet has claimed them as such. During an interview with NBA TV James said that his favorite movies were “The Godfather” and “The Godfather II.” The ”Godfather” trilogy directed by Francis Ford Coppola, has a total length of 9 hours and 45 minutes. Being a fan of the movies, James should know

a thing or two about them. In a postgame interview in 2016 a reporter asks James about his favorite line or phrase from one of the movies.

“Oh from the Godfather? It’s so many different phrases, and too many different lines to just uh categorize it”, said James.

James then ends his response with a joke saying how there’s nine hours of the movies, and how could he pick one quote. Lebron’s “lies” don’t end at movies. He is notoriously known to always be on the first page of a book. During a postgame interview in 2020, James was seen holding the book, “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” by Malcom X and Alex Haley. The reporter asked James what his biggest takeaways so far were from the book. He responds by saying he is not too far into the book but that he (referring to Malcolm X) was a “ very,

very, very, very great man.”

Viewers in the comment section of this video took James’s answer as a joke. One said, “It took him 2 minutes to say... Absolutely nothing” and “He was a powerful minded individual. And smart. I wish I met him. You can apply that to the autobiography of just about anyone.”

Aside from this one book incident, he has also been caught by paparazzi carrying a book where he is clearly on

the first page.

James has also claimed to have predicted Kobe Bryant’s 81 point game before the game started. He told an interviewer that he just had a feeling that he was going to drop 70 or maybe even 80 that night.

Whether or not he is telling the truth, Lebron James’s actions seem too unrealistic to the public eye and are seen as “lies.”

Chardon Resident Sued by the City over “Ugly” Yard

Bowman says the charges have been negatively affecting both her mental and physical health. “I spent the majority of 2022 recovering from various health ailments and surgeries; I was in and out of the hospital beginning May 1 and had a weight restriction of not being allowed to lift more than ten pounds from May to mid-December. Then I ended the year with a sinus and lung infection that I didn’t recover from until February this year. The stress from coming home to finding warrant after warrant posted to my door compounded that.”

verbally accosting and threatening us. He has screamed at me through his window on multiple occasions and called the cops on me for mowing my lawn. He will follow me around when I am outside trying to do yard work. He made it so that I did not receive mail for two years because he was friends with the mailman. When I went to the authorities about the harassment, nothing was done, and I just hid at home until it was dark out so I didn’t have to encounter him.”

Inspiring or an eyesore?

On January 18, 12 misdemeanor charges were filed against Kyan Bowman for her yard display. The alleged violations claim her front lawn adorned with four-foot dragons, a rainbow porch, a rooster statue and a sign with motivational quotes is junk and “improperly maintained.” This is not the first time Bowman has been taken to court over her yard, though last time it was a civil case that was eventually dropped.

to spread positivity. “(My message is) everyone has a place where they belong, and they may not feel like they are there right now, but we can work together to find it, kindness matters. The past does not need to define your present, and the present does not need to define your future - because you can determine your fate.”

On her Instagram the theme of her sign changes every week. It covers a diverse array of topics such as educating about black history month, making time for self-care and combating depression.

The city isn’t the only one who disapproves of her display. On top of the warrants, Mrs. Bowman says she has been experiencing constant harassment from disapproving neighbors. “Harassment has included a neighbor coming onto my property and accusing me of trespassing. Another neighbor has called me explicit and derogatory names related to sexuality and gender. The same neighbor has lit fireworks and thrown them at me while I walked my dogs - one of whom is in a wheelchair because she was shot. That neighbor has harassed people that have visited me (including my mother),

According to Bowman, this is not the first time she has been met with aggression while trying to bring community to Chardon. “When I first moved here I sent out invites to have a community potluck, and the only response I got was from a city council person who lives down the street complaining to the city about me wanting to host a community potluck event to get to know neighbors. I’m from Jersey, and in Jersey, you could meet someone on the street at noon, and by dinner time you’re at their house with their family as old friends. I had this perception that the Midwest was going to be even friendlier

than that, so it was a bit of a culture

confrontation.”

The response hasn’t been all negative though. “When someone learned that this was my house, they told me how

it helped them through days when they had suicidal ideations.”

“Since the article in Scene and the piece with Channel 5, I have gotten support and encouragement from people near and far. So many neighbors in Chardon have come out and told me how important my messages are and how much they love the various things that are in my yard throughout the year. I had felt so isolated being in Chardon, and now I feel like there is a little bit more of a community.”

Chardon students seem to agree. They overwhelmingly love the display. Junior Peyton Bertran, said, “I personally believe that woman’s yard is just so awe-inspiring. She’s always changing the sign in the front yard with new inspirational quotes, and I really enjoy her dragon.”

Senior Marissa Darling said, “I have no issue with this yard. I understand the

The Adderall Shortage

For the past 5 months, America has been dealing with an Adderall shortage. Those who are prescribed Adderall have been struggling to find alternatives. Because there is far less Adderall to go around, doctors often give patients other medications such as Concerta and Vyvanse.

According to nbcnews.com, ”As of January, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, which tracks drug availability, reported shortages affecting nearly 40 different doses or formulations of generic

Concerta, a long-acting form of methylphenidate, the drug in Ritalin. Takeda Pharmaceuticals, which makes Vyvanse, also known as lisdexamfetamine, its generic, says there is no shortage of that drug, but according to dozens of pharmacies reached by NBC News, Vyvanse has been on intermittent backorder for months.”

Adderall is a stimulant prescription drug usually prescribed for individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a disorder that has symptoms starting in childhood. The predominant symptoms are inattentiveness and hyperactivity. ADHD medication can increase attention span, reduce eagerness, control.

Charlie Pason, diagnosed with severe ADHD, has been affectly greatly by this shortage.

”It’s a need not like a want to be a functioning normal human in the world. It’s to the point where because there is a shortage, I don’t take it on the weekends to keep as much as I can. It affects the Adderall already in my system, because you need to take it daily, it messes everything up,” she said. Although there is no cure for ADHD,

people take medications like stimulants, antihypertensive drugs and more to help. Some even partake in support groups, anger management and family therapy.

Pason finds that reading self-help books helps to deal with her ADHD on or off meds. She also says that a total quiet space is best for her considering she gets overstimulated easily.

”My room literally has no decorations because anything could make me say, ”Oh what about this! What about that!” also I don’t even drive anywhere. There have been times where I have drove and I’ve whipped my head around.” Pason said.

An anonymous person who has been diagnosed with ADHD said that they feel stressed when they are off their Adderall. They also said that they use Focalin during this outbreak as a substitute for Adderall. Some diagnosed people with ADHD

for people but love the colors, I love the art, and I love the dragons. It just always makes me smile. I saw they were debating about it on Facebook. Maybe clean up the mess a little bit, I understand that, but leave the dragons and leave the colors.”

Mrs. Bowman said health issues are often the reason for the mess, considering she couldn’t carry anything over 10 pounds for months.

Another senior, Hazel Detweiler, told the Hilltop Echo she believed it was unfair Mrs. Bowman was being sued considering St. Mary’s puts up a pro-life display every year, and no one bats an eye.

In response, Bowman said, “Regarding the other signs, both past and current, I strongly believe in the freedom of speech and will advocate for anyone’s right to have their voice heard, regardless if I agree with what they are

A DEA laboratory found that six out of ten fake prescription pills contain fentanyl.

to sell these pills easily. This is so they can easily reach their target audience, minors. The DEA stated that criminal drug networks make these fake drugs to deceive the American public.

The DEA strongly encourages not to buy Adderall off the street and to try to start rationing your medication. Some strategies are to take it every weekday and not on the weekends or to take it every other day. The FDA stated that the crisis should end later this year.

American Teachers Should Get Paid More

According to USA Facts, in 2021 the average salary of an American public school teacher was $61,090, and for a private school teacher $46,000. The gap

teachers.

A public school teacher would have to work about 14 years, and 18 for a private school teacher, to come close to the average salary an NFL player makes in a year.

The highest-paid football player of 2022 was Aaron Rodgers, with 50.3 million dollars annually, making $137,808.22 daily.

Usually, school districts pay for a percentage of teachers’ health insurance, dental, vision care and typically match retirement payments. Another benefit is that teachers are granted 15 sick days each year.

psychiatric care.

Dr. Brad Hillard, Phsy ED and health teacher at Chardon High School said, “I’m getting a fair salary, but I think I’d like to be paid as much as professional football players, even though that’s unreasonable.”

He also explained the wage gap between public and private teachers quite well, “Because private schools pay their employees from money received from tuition, they don’t have funding from the government or taxpayers to pay staff more. However, I do believe they have more freedom in what they can teach, and at a higher quality than most public schools.”

history, they lack two things, numbers, and money, two things professional sports teams have.Teachers should not have to worry about the safety or the lack of funding to teach the next generation of doctors, teachers,

between teachers’ wages is concerning, but what is even more of an issue is how much professional football players make compared to them. The median wage for an NFL player is $860,000, $798,910 more than the national average of public school

On the other hand, vested NFL players, people with three or more credited seasons, receive medical, dental, vision, prescription drugs, and work/life resources coverage. Players also have life insurance and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) coverage. However, their benefits don’t stop there. They also obtain an HRA (Health Reimbursement Account) plan, which their spouses can use as well, all the way to top-of-the-line spinal and

The Mandela Effect

In 2009, the status of former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela’s death was “altered”. According to USA TODAY, paranormal researcher Fiona Broome shared her realization of Nelson being alive on the internet. As time went on, more and more people shared that they thought Mandela was dead as well. People from all over distinctly remembered that Nelson Mandela passed away in prison during the 1980’s. In actuality, Mandela died in 2013. This is how the term, “The Mandela Effect”, came to be known. The Mandela Effect is when a mass amount of people recall the same event occurring, when in reality it did not take place. Some instances of this phenomenon include, Rich Uncle Pennybags A.K.A Mr. Monopoly not having a monocle, the Double Stuf Oreos spelling stuff with only one t, The Berenstein Bears not Berenstain, and many more.

As claimed by the Cleveland Clinic, “Typically, external stimuli like observations and experiences are processed in your brain as memory to be stored. You can then retrieve these memories at a later time.”

Bonner-Jackson says memories can be influenced by different perceptions and even biases. Memories can be altered unknowingly over time as people gain more information about said memory. Could there be correlation between the Mandela effect and spreading rumors? On a podcast from Pop Culture, psychology professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology Nicholas DiFonzo said people normally start rumors unpurposefully to make sense of an unclear situation or circumstance. This observation relates to the influence of memories changing. People want to fill in gaps.

Professional sport is a part of the entertainment industry, which allows teams and stadium owners to make millions of dollars and use it to keep expanding their domain. Suppose it is by putting money back into the stadiums to draw in more people or hiring even better players and staff to bring more attention to their teams. This only furthers the gap between these two industries. However, the education system is always in need of improvement and expansion, whether it be more laws put in place to protect students and staff or the introduction of essential topics like sexual education and LGBTQIA+

If they can’t find information from the primary source, they must find other ways.

A poll was made to see the theory of large groups of people believing the same occurrence/word even when they are incorrect. The most common instances of the Mandela effect were answered correctly. Such as the Froot in Froot Loops. Most people think it is spelled Fruit Loops when in truth, the box spells it as froot with a piece of cereal replacing the “u” and “i” in fruit. In a poll of Chardon High School students, it was a close tie with nine people saying “fruit” and eight saying “Froot.”

Less discussed occurrences, such as Darth Vader’s iconic line in “Star Wars” had way more drastic answers. Out

scientists, lawyers, politicians, caretakers, and activists needed to provide and uplift the future of America and the world. Overall teachers should be getting paid more to help provide for their own families and kids to attend school to give them the opportunity to become someone important. Not only to provide for their families but to be paid for the work they put into teaching the next generation.

of 17 people, all of them said the line was, “Luke, I am your father.” or “I am your father.” This was a short answer question. None of the responses were correct. The line Darth Vader says is, “No, I am your father.”

14 out of the 17 people said it’s spelled “Febreeze” and the other 3, who were correct, said it’s spelled febreze.

There ccould be many more examples of the Mandela effect that we may not even know. The science behind mankind’s mind is still being studied and through time theories will change. How long might it be until another mass remembrance is revealed as false?

Elden Ring Review

EldenRing is one of the most critically acclaimed video games with many gaming outlets giving perfect scores. Mitchell Saltzman of IGN, a gaming news site, has been quoted saying, “Elden Ring ended up as one of the most unforgettable gaming experiences I’ve ever had.” It also won the Game of The Year award at the 2023 Game Awards last year. EldenRing was released in 2022. It was developed by FromSoftware and was published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, and the wordbuilding was done by acclaimed author George R.R. Martin. Elden Ring has to be one of the most remarkable gaming experiences I’ve played through. Even though its story is very basic, that works in favor of the game. A game doesn’t need to have a sprawling, incredible story to be good. Like many of its other soulsborne, a term used by fans to refer to the series Darksouls and Bloodborne together, counterparts, its difficulty is punishing yet satisfying. After defeating the first boss Margit, The Fell Omen I felt a wave of relief as all the pure adrenaline and rage left my body and was replaced by joy.

The designs in the game are also incredible, with many of the bosses and armor sets having astonishing detail. One of my personal favorite armor sets is the Raging Wolf set with the fur around the shoulders and the helmet giving a dead-eyed look. The red color also fits the general design outline very well. It looks like something straight out of Game of Thrones or Berserk, the ladder of which is one of the many inspirations behind FromSoftware’s EldenSoulsBorne games. Besides just character design the world design is also outstanding. Though being one of the most annoying areas in the game with its many poison swamps and dangerous enemies, Caelid is the most perfectly visually designed area I’ve ever seen which makes its annoying parts bearable. It feels like a rotting world, it has lakes of something called Scarlet Rot which slowly eats away at you. The enemies are far stronger than anything seen in any of the other areas. One of the aforementioned dangerous enemies is a Tyrannosaurus Rex dog dubbed the Giant Dog. Another incredibly designed area is Nokron the Eternal City. With its constant, brilliant night skies and glorious rivers as well as destroyed old buildings, it is one of the most brilliantly designed areas. The first time I went into it, many of the

Why Does My Soda Taste Different?

Soda comes in a variety of forms. Most commonly, consumers can choose from sodas that are bottled, canned or from a soda fountain. But each option can taste different, so many people may prefer one over the others.

Fountain soda will taste different from canned or bottled sodas. Restaurants and other establishments use fountains as they can be much more affordable.

Fountain soda consists of soda syrup and carbonated water, giving it a unique taste.

Canned and bottled sodas are much more similar to each other though.

According to The Coca-Cola Great Britain website, “Whether you drink it from a can or a bottle, Coca-Cola is always the same. It’s the same recipe, the same ingredients and the same manufacturing process every time.” But if they are the exact same, what makes them taste different?

There are a few factors that can change the taste. For example, carbonation. When carbon dioxide, the chemical that creates carbonation, reacts with water,+ it forms carbonic acid. People can taste carbonic acid, so drinks with more carbonation will taste a bit different than drinks with less. Is more or less carbonation better? It all comes down to personal preference.

“Cans have too much fizz,” said Maija Thomas.

“I like canned pop because it’s more fizzy,” said Emily Tomasch.

The packaging of soda may also change the taste. Some consumers may believe that canned soda can have more of a metallic taste, so they prefer bottled soda. There is no ingredient in the drink that causes this metallic taste it is just the aluminum can. When someone puts their mouth to a soda can, their tongue may taste the metal. The same thing goes for plastic bottles. The plastic bottle can result in a slight plastic taste.

Temperature is a big factor in how soda tastes. As soda gets warmer, the taste can get sweeter. This is due to the fact that the cold limits someone’s ability to sense sweetness. The cold also can make a soda taste fresh. To some, a warm soda may make them feel like the drink has

been sitting out all day. There are many things that can change the way soda tastes. If someone wants a consistent soda experience, they should only buy their preferred soda packaging and store it in their refrigerator.

Japan’s Love for the Flatwoods Monster

Deep in Appalachia is the town of Flatwoods in Braxton County, West Virginia. In the Flatwoods on September 12, 1952, a bright light streaked across the sky. Later that night was the first sighting of what would be known as the Flatwoods Monster. It was first described as having glowing red eyes and being 10 feet tall. Its head was like an ace of spades with long arms ending in claws and a long skirtlike bottom. It’s scent was described as nauseating and quoted as having a “pungent mist.”

The story of this encounter quickly took off. Newspaper headlines and radio broadcasts about the event were being spread, even outside of the little town of Flatwoods.

Due to the mass spread of information about the beast, it eventually reached beyond the United States and landed in Japan, where its popularity skyrocketed. This love for the extraterrestrial began between the 1960s and 1980s due to most of the media at the time referencing the monster.

The monster has been in video games, Japanese comics, manga, anime and more. According to Andrew Smith, director of the Braxton County Visitor Center and founder of the Flatwoods Monster Museum, a Japanese woman once came into the museum. She had already seen a drawing of the monster in Japan. She had never known it came from West Virginia let alonethe United States. The Flatwoods Monster is also

referred to as Braxxie by locals and that name is used the most. Braxxie has appeared primarily in video games. Some of the monster’s appearances include the Scriblenuats series, Hotshot Golfe Fore!, Wild Arms,DaeTonosamaAppare Ichiban,SpaceHarrierII and Ginga Ninkyouden. It is also referenced in The LegendofZelda:Majora’sMask, where multiple monsters attack the barn you must protect. In the game, the attackers are referred to simply as “them” and they look remarkably similar to Braxxie. How did this love for Braxxie even begin? Japan has always enjoyed stories of aliens, a famous story from there is called Utsurobune. In 1803 an unknown object washed up on the shores of Hitachi Province. According to legend, this object emerged a woman dressed in traditional Russian clothing carrying a mysterious box. Many theories about this incident include her riding in a makeshift boat from Russia. However, the most popular myth is that she was an alien that crash-landed and washed up to shore. So Japan has always been fascinated with the paranormal and unexplained. This could mean that their love for the mystery monster comes from their love of aliens and other things from out of this world. Braxxie lives in not only the hearts and nightmares of the people of its hometown but also in towns across the country and in Japan. Its influence has inspired many creative minds to create characters based on not only the beast but also ones that are just Braxxie itself.

The Growth of AI Art

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has made significant strides in the past decades. In 2023 we have AI that can write essays for us, answer questions for us and even create art. With complex algorithms, AI can take a prompt and create any art imaginable by pulling similar images off of the internet. Popular AI art generators include Images.ai, NightCafe, Dall-E, Jasper Art and Starry AI. This new form of art changes how we view and create art completely.

Using computers or AI algorithms isn’t something that is new. People have been working with computers to create unique art since computers were developed. AI art is different from something like using Paint or Adobe Illustrator. With AI, anybody can create forms of art even a human couldn’t create in a short time. Any person can simply put in a prompt and the AI Instantly computes an image for you.

AI art is also used by companies to create graphics for social media or advertising.

AI is seen in popular movies such as “The Matrix” and “Wall-E” as AI potentially destructive. This genre of movies discusses the problem of relying on AI but does not touch on art. AI art could put people out of jobs. These quick and easy algorithms could replace aspiring artists who want to work for companies or on animation teams. Companies would not have to pay a team to do the work they need, and they could get their results almost instantly.

The upside to AI art is that the possibilities are endless. There are infinite forms of art already, such as photography, pottery, painting and drawing. With AI art, a whole new form is opened up and unexplored for artists. Artists can now work with and alongside these generators and create unseen arts that were never able to be created before. People on TikTok

have been using AI to create scenarios that are unusual such as, Will Smith

do with them. In future years we could see things we might now think of as
