A lost kitten and a very funny cat

The Lost Kitten by Lee and Komako Sakai A beautiful new picture book from Japan's leading illustrator

The Lost Kitten is a perfectly simple story about nding something to love only to fear it may be lost.

When a tiny stray kitten turns up on the doorstep, Hina and her mother take it in. Hina learns about looking after a living creature.

Then one day, the kitten goes missing.

"This book is, quite simply, a work of art. Sakai is considered one of Japan’s leading illustrators, and it’s not hard to see why. In The Lost Kitten, she has captured the innocent curiosity of a child, and of a small kitten, so perfectly that each page almost feels alive." Tall, Short, Tiny and a Pickle (NZ), February 2017

Lee was born in Tokyo in 1964. This is his rst book. Komako Sakai lives in Japan and studied art in Tokyo. She is one of the most popular children’s illustrators in Japan and winner of the Japanese Picture Book Prize, and her books are published throughout the world.

Julia Marshall was in The Dominion Post last weekend: There are two things you need to be a book publisher, apart from an inherent love of reading. One is attention to detail and the other is immense curiosity. Everything else is pretty much negotiable.

John McIntyre from The Children’s Bookshop speaks about the wonderful experience of reading your rst chapter books on Radio New Zealand. Our own Helper and Helper by Joy Cowley makes his list: “I love them. They’re warm, they’re witty, and occasionally a little dark.”
