BIZGOLF    AUGUST 2017    LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

PUBLISHER & MANAGING DIRECTOR TUSHAR SAHOO

Welcome to the new era

COO BHARATH ARVIND MANAGING EDITOR VINEET MANN vineet@gecmediagroup.com GUEST WRITER AMAN MISRA LEAD VISUALIZER NEHA

Dear Readers,

I

am overjoyed as I introduce you to the very first issue of bizgolf magazine. With rising popularity of the game among developing nations, the role of an industry-centric publication has become vital. While the worryguts will tell you that golf industry is facing a difficult period, it’s just a stage of stabilization. The Tiger Woods era spiked the industry to an unprecedented boom and everyone cashed in on the “gold rush”. While the gold rush is over for now, the industry isn’t and golf is going nowhere. An oversaturated market is in a process of natural correction and consolidation. The youth have taken a liking to the sport and golf tourism is on an upswing across the globe. Golf inclusion in Olympics last year was a major game-changer for the sport. It is now more international than it ever was. Things are looking good for business and there are plenty of opportunities to grow and thrive. This is where we come in. Bizgolf is a premium golf publication packed with suitable content to engage golfing CXO’s, corporate big wigs, amateur players, marketers and event professionals in the corporate world. In each issue, we aim to provide our readers with best in class original content, relevant news and storiesthat are shaping the future of the sport we all love so much. August issue features an exclusive interview with Gregg Patterson, the renowned club manager of The Beach Club, California. The cover story is on the recently concluded Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. This ‘Major’ achievement has placed Jordan Spieth on the cover. A fitting champion indeed. Apart from this, there are plenty of other topics of interest that found place in the issue – Scotland’s best courses, Spotlight feature on Golf architects, health tips, equipment guide and such. Do write to us if you have any suggestions or feedback regarding any section of the magazine. Or just to say hello! We will be glad to touch base. Happy reading!

BIRKDALE WITNESSES A

SPIETH SPECIAL BY: VINEET MANN

W

hen Zach Johnson won the 2015 Open Championship at St. Andrews, Jordan Spieth was drinking wine out of the coveted Claret Jug trophy in celebration of his fellow American’s thrilling playoff win against Marc Leishman and Louis Oosthuizen. Fast forward 2017, he found himself in an almost all-American title chase alongside Olympic bronze medalist Matt Kuchar. Leading by three strokes after the penultimate round, Spieth blew the lead at the turn to lie tied with Kuch at 9-under. For the 23-year-old Spieth, things went from bad to worse at the 13th Tee. A meltdown. Then a rally that ranks among the best. And a fitting champion! A story that is one for the golf lore witnessed by thousands at The Royal Birkdale Golf Club, England.

Bizarre Bogey on the 13th Spieth sent his tee shot on the par 4 13th way, way right and a 20-minute ordeal started. On the verge of imploding the hopes of a third Major trophy, Jordan Spieth’s ball was eventually located at the bottom of a dune tangled in thick hay. Meanwhile, Kuchar had taken a knee on the fairway. After deciding

to take an unplayable lie, Spieth went as far back as the driving range to find solid ground. After 20 long minutes since his tee shot, he played his second shot before closing an up and down for a bogey. Not the worst of result, all things considered.

Joy that was Short Lived Amidst all the chaos, Kuchar made a comfortable par on 13th and for the first time found himself in the lead. Spieth’s meltdown was well on the cards. It looked like, maybe, after leading for more than three and half days, the coveted Claret Jug was slipping away from him. But Jordan Spieth had other ideas and golf is a strange game. He did what Sir Nick Faldo did, 25 years ago, after losing his four-shot lead. Faldo played four best holes of his life to claim victory and Jordan Spieth followed suit with his final five.

Response of a Champion A tap-in birdie on the 14th to draw level followed by a 40ft eagle putt on 15th to regain the lead. Another 30ft birdie on the 16th to extend the lead to two strokes at 11-under.

WHAT THEY SAID

"It's hard to explain," said Kuchar, who also shot 69. "It's crushing. It hurts. And it's an excitement and a thrill to have played well, put up a battle, put up a fight. You work so hard to get to this position ... I can only control what I do, how I play. Jordan is a great champion and certainly played that way in the finishing stretch today. It was impressive stuff when a guy does something like that. All you can really do is sit back, tip your cap and say, 'Well done.' And it was certainly a show that he put on."

-JORDAN SPIETH "I felt once I lost my lead completely and we were tied, I actually felt the nerves go away for a few holes until I got the lead again. And then they were back. You just don't know really what your mind is going to do to you sometimes. You can control it to an extent but certain situations are going to bring more tension, and you have to kind of channel that the right way, play the right shots. And that was a difficult thing to do today because it was just so up and down.”

One more birdie at 17th and a par at 18th to sign for a winning tournament total of 12-under-268. Kuchar only managed one birdie against one bogey in the run-in to finish three strokes behind the newly crowned ‘Champion Golfer of the Year’.

Words of Wisdom According to Spieth, his caddie, Michael Greller helped him cope with the pressure. Near the seventh tee, Spieth said, Greller reminded him of a recent vacation in Mexico, where Spieth took a photograph of himself in a group of athletes that included Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps. Greller told him

SCOTLAN THE HOME OF GOLF

The famous Swilcan Bridge on the par-4 18th

Golf, as we know it, was developed and established in Scotland with records dating back to 15th century. Home to the world governing body, Royal and Ancient (or simply R&A), Scotland has over 578 courses- most of them public or council-owned with low fee and easy access. Golf is not an elite sport in Scotland but possesses widespread appeal across the social spectrum. Without a doubt, Scotland is the first name on a golf traveler’s wish-list. This is the Holy Grail. While there are a number of golf courses in Scotland to cater to golfers of all skill levels, the following courses are just not to be missed. Read on.

OLD COURSE AT ST. ANDREWS LINKS PAR 72

6721 YARDS (6146 M)

A round of golf at the indisputable, iconic home of golf is special. It is the oldest golf course in the world and a place of pilgrimage for golfers. Tiger woods calls this one “the ultimate”. Probably the most cherished tee-time that any golfer can ever book,is not that difficult to come by as many presume. Despite its grand status and heritage, the Old Course remains a public course, opento-all for over 600 years now. The Old course is an open, out-and-back links layout, played through naturally flowing

sand-based terrain.Stray too far beyond the bumps and hollows of the good-width fairways, and you’ll discover the gorse bushes, thick rough and hellish bunkers lying in wait.

MUIRFIELD GOLF CLUB PAR 71 7245 YARDS (6625M)

Muirfield is home to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers which is cited as the world’s oldest verifiable organised golf club. The claim is backed-up by club records that dates back to 1744. The Honourable Company moved from its original home (the Leith Links in Edinburgh) in 1836, and moved again in 1891 from its second home (Mussleburgh Links). This second move brought the Company to the Archerfield Estate in Dirleton, and a new 18-hole Tom Morris designed course, called Muirfield. The course at Muirfield, overlooking the Firth of Forth, provides one of the

finest tests of links golf anywhere in the world. The privately-owned layout is also one of the courses on rotation for The Open Championship. Muirfield has hosted the tournament 16 times with Phil Mickelson lifting the coveted Claret Jug in the most recent edition in 2013. The layout of the course is fairly simple. A clockwise front-nine loop encircles an anti-clockwise back-nine, with no water ditches, streams (burns) or ponds. Lack of water hazards is more than made up with ball grabbing pot bunkers and immeasurably deep fescue. While it just may not be the course to conquer on the first attempt,

patience and persistence go a long way here. There’s hardly any blind shots but the par-4 11th drive will require a solid aim at a marker pole and a swing to match up to it. From almost every hole there are picturesque views across the glorious Firth of Forth to the hills of Fife.

Course Architect and Designer Original layout of the course was by Old Tom Morris (1891). Modifications were carried out by Tom Simpson and Harry Colt (1928)

Old Course at Royal Troon PAR 71

7,175 YARDS (6,561 M) Old course at Royal Troon is a perfect example of how first impressions can be deceptive. An out-and-back layout can appear forgiving from the first tee but these revered links lay down one of the world’s finest tests of seaside golf. One such test is the infamous par 3 8th, fondly called Postage Stamp. Short in length at just 125 yards from the back tees, the tiddler of a hole is huge in reputation. The green is surrounded by the scariest collection of grassy mounds, pot bunkers and slick run-offs and hence require great precision and control. The mighty have fallen here.

The opening and closing holes on Royal Troon’s Old course are characterized by subtle elevation changes. The turn and layout’s middle section is where greater undulation is found along with gorse bushes as well as long wispy fescues.13th is where the course provides another twist. Brace yourself for a long, very stern finish amidst strong prevailing wind. Closing stretch at Old course consists of three long par 4s, two tough par 3s, and a challenging par 5 (the 16th) with its fairway bisected at the halfway point by a ditch, not usually carried from the tee. The glorious views of the across the Firth of Clyde, the Isle of Arran and Ailsa Craig only add to the pleasure of a round at this magnificent course. The Club has hosted The Open nine times, the most recent in 2016. Remember

the legendary contest between Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson that made a lot of noise last year? That was here. Stenson Won.

Course Architect and Designer Willie Fernie – Scottish professional golfer and architect. 1883 Open Championship winner.

Fun Fact Queen Elizabeth II conferred the Royal prefix on Troon GC in its centenary year (1978). By royal prerogative, 10 Scottish golf clubs use the “Royal” title, namely: Aberdeen, Royal & Ancient (St Andrews), Burgess, Dornoch, Duff House, Montrose, Musselburgh, Perth, Tarlair and Troon.

Loch Lomond Golf Club PAR 71 7,100 YARDS (6,492 M)

Located on the banks of Loch Lomond, this parkland golf course is one the best known private golf clubs. Immensely scenic and handsomely crafted, the club’s top-drawer golf is exclusive to club members and their invited guests. This course is not open to casual green fee payers. A Tom Weiskopf’s masterpiece, the layout compliments the gently wooded terrain, running alongside spectacular Loch Lomond for seven holes. Much of the back-nine makes for a captivating and more undulating area of woodland with two exquisite lakeside holes. Lined with many century old trees, the course also boasts of the ruin of 700-year-old Rossdhu castle. Distant mountain views, the tranquil splendour of the

lochside setting and an abundance of pheasant and other wildlife, all add to the undoubted pleasures of this sublime environment.

LEADING THE WAY IN

GOLF COURSE DESIGNS No two golf courses are same, ever. This cannot be said in reference to the playing surfaces of any other sport. In essence, the uniqueness of a golf course has enabled a multibillion dollar business of golf tourism. In this issue, the Spotlight is on the architects and designers. The real value in golf course architecture lies in creating the ‘magic’ in your golf game, and avoiding anything less. Architecture is the obvious key to ensure that your time on a golf course is well spent and makes you want to visit again and again. Let’s have a look at few such companies who pride themselves at their exceptional work over the years and contribution to the growth of the game.

ERNIE ELS DESIGN Formed in 2000, Ernie Els Design is a full-service golf course design company wholly owned by its principal, four-time major champion and World Golf Hall of Famer Ernie Els. The international scope of Ernie’s 70 professional career victories is mirrored in the increasingly global reach of his designs, with signature courses and renovations making an impact in emerging and established golf markets alike. Led by the ‘Big Easy’, the company operates under the guidance of senior design associate Greg Letsche from its two offices in Florida, USA and South Africa. Additional field offices in Malaysia and Dubai facilitate round the clock support. In 2015 Ernie was voted ‘Designer of the Year’ at the World Golf Awards.

Design Philosophy Ernie Els’ playing career has been defined by his ability to convert shot values into tournament wins, particularly with his touch around the greens and exacting bunker play. He draws on his experience to implement strategic features by: • Rewarding the golfer off the tee for a good shot, but not overly penalize for a marginal or poor shot. • Strategic placement of hazards, such as bunkers or water features that play from a variety of tees. • Bunkers define the strategy of the hole and are used judiciously. • Afford the opportunity to play different

shots into greens. • Create greens’ complexes and surrounds that inspire imagination on club choice. • Course set-up needs to be flexible with a variety of tee and pin positions. • Use of grasses with little or no rough, promoting “firm and fast” ball movement and strategy. • Develop a close relationship between greens and tees that encourages walking and pace of play.

The

PALMER McCORMACK LEGACY BY AMAN MISRA

The recently concluded United States Open Championship was won by American Brooks Koepka who took home a tidy sum of $2 million out of a grand purse of $12 million. The upper echelons of the sport are rewarding - at this writing Koepka does not have an equipment sponsor, preferring to play with a mixed bag of clubs while Nike pays him to wear their apparel (and logo).

This is a rare case, one fuelled by the Swoosh brand’s decision to abandon the golf club manufacturing business last year. Koepka realistically would have pocketed additional astronomical sums if he had a deal with a company. Impressive money for the modern-day athlete, which would have not been possible without two people working in tandem

during the second half of the last century. Seven-time major winner Arnold Palmer is well known. A barrage of brands come to mind - the Arnold Palmer drink, MasterCard and Rolex to name a few. A management company in Palmer’s name, and a golf course design firm are others. The second person was Mark McCormack, founder and chairman of the

International Management Group. The Yale Law school graduate met Palmer while they were still in college, McCormack played as number one on the William and Mary University team. Arnold of course, was from Wake Forest. While the IMG mogul initially worked at the Cleveland firm Arter and Hadden, Palmer won his first Masters. A year later

in late 1959, all it took was a handshake between the two to seal a contract that would eventually lead to the birth of IMG in 1960. In the same year Palmer won the Masters and US Open, pushing his stock through the roof. He brought the game into American homes with his homemade swing and aggressive style of play. Writing for Golf

Digest, Tom Callahan says that Palmer stopped winning majors at 35 – but no one noticed. IMG’s success can be attributed to representing golfers, financing cable deals and owning events among numerous other strategies across various sports around the globe. At one time, they represented Golf’s big three – Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player,

and Palmer who together have a combined 34 major championships. Decades after Arnie’s last win at the 1973 Bob Hope, he was still minting money. When he passed in September of 2016, his fortune was estimated at $875 million – third on a list behind basketball star Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. In 2014, Rolex had renewed their deal with Arnold for another decade. The company and athlete spent the better part of fifty years together, marking one of the longest such partnerships. To conclude, the model created by McCormack is essentially the blueprint used by corporates and sportspeople around the world today. He was also responsible for helping create the first World golf, and later tennis rankings. The concept of value in a sportsperson really took off at this point. According to Australian writer Gideon Haigh, “Sports in the 20th century was all about raising money. In the 21st century, it’s about spending that money.” An important thought to keep in mind as sport and games try to keep pace with the ever-changing world.

THE KEY TO A BETTER GAME

BALANCE AND STRENGTH All of you have spent many hours practising. In a single practice session, professional golfers perform up to 300 swings and hit over 2000 shots per week.

BIZGOLF    AUGUST 2017    GEAR UP

DRIVE AWAY Like everything in golf, buying the right

equipment, isn’t easy. It’s a world of precision, and all that precision is designed to help you enjoy the game. Still, it can be confusing, whether you’re buying for yourself or someone else. With this section, we aim to fill you up with information on the latest offerings from the biggest golf brands. In this issue, we bring you bizgolf review of the hottest Drivers around. Check them out. It’s not how far, it’s how many, right? If you play by that mantra, the Callaway Big Bertha Fusion driver could be for you. It’s the ultimate fairway finder. In order to make a driver ‘super-forgiving’ you need to increase BIG BERTHA the moment of inertia and that means FUSION PRICE: $400 getting the weight low and back. The Big Bertha Fusion uses a titanium ‘Exo-Cage’ for the body and then adding an ultra-light Triaxial Carbon crown and sole to enable them to save weight and move it elsewhere. Speed is key and Callaway has added the Speed Step crown from the XR 16 to the Fusion to smooth the airflow over the top of the head and maximise the club head speed. The Callaway Big Bertha Fusion may cost a little, but for that you get cutting edge materials in a distinctive head shape with all the latest aerodynamic technology and if it enables you to hit more fairways then it will be a worth your money.

Both 2017 M2 driver delivers distance and forgiveness. Adding the draw-biased D-Type to the line-up ensures that all golfers can benefit from these clubs. Although, ultra-forgiving drivers can look and sound hollow, cheap and result in much ball spin, TaylorMade tackles this with a weight-saving, carbon-composite crown on top and a reconfigured internal geometry. This provides forgiveness and keeps the CG low. Also, the new speed pocket is M2/M2 D-TYPE three times more flexible than the 2016 (2017) M2 driver. As a result, golfers can gain PRICE: $400 ball speed and distance.

TaylorMade

Callaway

With M1 in 2017, TaylorMade opted for evolution instead of revolution. Riding on the immense popularity of the last year’s model, TM made a 4% larger footprint at address which has been achieved by saving weight in a few places. This carbon panel on the sole has been recessed in a little which saves volume here to enable the overall M1 (2017) footprint to be larger. The moveable PRICE: $500 weights are now more embedded in the track to improve the aerodynamics and combined with the darker looks, it gives the 2017 M1 a more sinister look with lime green flashes. The tracks are also tucked under an overhang that comes from the heel side of the club to improve the aerodynamics as the air flows over the sole diagonally from the heel during the swing.

TaylorMade

When a company decides that they are naming a driver ‘Epic’, then it better be the real deal as you can’t afford to get it wrong. It is indeed the holy grail of distance and the Epic Triaxial Carbon crown is 30% thinner than previous versions and 64% lighter than the titanium crown on the Callaway XR 16 driver. Callaway claims you can expect 2mph gain or about 8 GBB EPIC/ yards increase for average amateurs with a 100mph ball SUB ZERO PRICE: $500 speed. If you generate high ball spin then there is also a Sub Zero version of the Epic to keep things down. It has a smaller and taller profile than the standard Epic and has a front and back weight port for a 12g and a 2g screw to fit in. Put the heavier weight at the front and it will create a lower flight and put it at the back and you will have a driver with a higher MOI than the ultra-forgiving Big Bertha Fusion.

The big headline grabber regarding the King F7 (and indeed the F7+) is that it is the first commercial driver to come with a pre installed tracking sensor, which is a neat breakthrough. The King F7 is the more forgiving of the two, while the F7+, with lower levels of spin, is more conducive to working the ball, and, perhaps by extension, better players. But the King F7 delivers premium levels of adjustability, and every other feature KING F7/F7+ you’d expect from a modern-day driver. They also include PRICE: $350/400 a GPS app to measure distances while TeXtreme Carbon Fibre crown adds immense forgiveness and performance. Adjustable weight system is easy to operate, and very effective when it comes to shape and trajectory.

Cobra

Cobra

Cobra says it is the longest and straightest driver they have made so far. And since their drivers are usually pretty good in this regard, this claim coupled with a high-end PRICE: $350/400 price, makes you wonder. The Cobra King LTD is their first driver to align the Centre of Gravity (CG) with the neutral axis of the driver head. This is a line from the centre of the face to the back of the head and the optimum CG placement is as far back on this line as possible. It is easier to hit this line closer to the face as the axis line is higher, but the benefit of the forgiveness is less. Ideally, this means golfers should get that perfect blend of higher launch, greater ball speed, and low spin.

KING LTD BLACK

Titleist is not known to rush things. A 5-year research process went into creating the SureFit CG moveable sole weight in the 917 D2 D3 drivers. The SureFit CG adjustable weight adds technical substance to the new model, adding a feature that has not been seen on a main917 D2/D3 stream Titleist driver before. The PRICE: $500 917 D2 driver is the larger 460cc head. The larger head means that the CG is a little further back and therefore this is the higher spinning head. The 917 D3 is a 440cc pear shaped head that looks great at address and more traditional than the D2 with less spin and lower launch.

Titleist

Ping successfully developed the idea that aerodynamic liability goes missing with large, forgiving drivers like its new G line. Besides the G, the line features the low-spin LS Tec and the slice-fighting SF Tec. Ping engineers say its latest 460-cubic-centimeter behemoths glide through the air almost as if G/LS TEC/ they were 3-woods. Ping accomplishes this SF TEC by using aggressive ridges (turbulators) on PRICE: $400 the crown, sole shaping and a trailing-edge cavity that reduces oscillation as the club approaches the ball. What’s not shrinking is forgiveness. The depressions on the back of the crown make the structure thinner. This allows Ping to use more mass low and deep for the most stable clubheads in company history.

APPOINTMENT

Swede Karlsson named Ryder Cup vice-captain

2017 John Deere Classic champion Bryson DeChambeau

PGA TOUR

‘The Scientist’ claims maiden win on PGA Tour Bryson DeChambeau is the perhaps the only pro golfer who is a physics major. Fondly known as “The Scientist” due to his extreme scientific approach to the game, DeChambeau lifted his maiden PGA Tour title at the John Deere Classic played at the TPC Deere Run, Illinois. Placed four shots

behind the overnight leader Patrick Rodgers, DeChambeau shot a 65 on the final day to take home the title. He used a SIK C-Series putter to birdie four of the final six holes, but it was Cobra’s King Forged One Length irons that ended up being the most talked-about piece of equipment in the

23-year-old’s bag. DeChambeau used the set of single-length irons to hit 17 greens in regulation during the final round, — he knocked five approach shots inside 16ft on the back nine — leading to a closing 6-under-30 that proved to be the difference.

Captain Thomas Bjorn has appointed Robert Karlsson as the vice-captain of the European Ryder Cup team. 47-year-old Karlsson has played in two Ryder Cups – 2006 where team Europe emerged victorious and again in 2008. He has 11 victories from more than 560 tournaments on the European Tour and has finished in the top ten in all four of golf’s major tournaments. “To get the call from Thomas was very special and I’m looking forward to being part of the Ryder Cup team again,” Karlsson was quoted as saying. “It’s a great honour to be vicecaptain and I’m very much looking forward to the next 16 months.” Following three straight European victories, USA won the most recent Ryder Cup on home soil in 2016. The next event will take place at Le Golf National in Paris in September 2018.

EUROPEAN TOUR

Playoff victory for Rafa Cabrera-Bello at Scottish Open Spain’s Rafa Cabrera-Bello secured his first title in 5 ½ years with a birdie on the first playoff hole against Callum Shinkwin to win the Scottish Open at Dundonald Links. Cabrera Bello shot a course record 8-under 64 in the final round. Overnight leader Shinkwin missed a

short 4-foot par putt on the final hole to drop into a playoff with Cabrera-Bello with a tied tournament total of 13-under-par. The last of Cabrera Bello’s previous two titles on the European Tour came at the Dubai Desert Classic in February 2012. “I am very pleased because I have been

working really hard to get my third win,” said Cabrera Bello. “Sometimes I’ve made mistakes when I’ve had chances while other times I’ve given it a good go only for other people to deserve to win. This time I really felt I played some of the best golf of my life.”

Golf world mourns Vincent Tshabalala and Roberto de Vicenzo LPGA TOUR

Jutanugarn prevails in playoff Vincent Tshabalala

Former South African professional golfer, Vincent Tshabalala, died recently at the age of 75. He rose to fame with a victory at the 1976 French Open while plying his trade on the European Tour. Due to the racial restrictions during apartheid, Tshabalala was barred from the South African Tour (now called the Sunshine Tour) for many years but later won two events. His best result in a major was a tie for 56th in the 1977 Open Championship. One of the greatest Argentine golfers of all time and the winner of the 1967 British Open, Roberto de Vicenzo, suffered a fall at his home causing hip fracture and then passed away within weeks. He was 94. De Vicenzo became the first South American to win the Open when he beat Jack Nicklaus by two strokes at Royal Liverpool. “What a stupid I am” de Vicenzo famously said after signing an incorrect scorecard after the final round of 1968 US Masters. The mistake cost him the playoff as he carded a closing 65 at Augusta National, but signed for a 66 and thus officially finished one stroke behind winner Bob Goalby. “This is a sad day, especially for golf in South America, where no player contributed more to the growth of the sport than Roberto De Vicenzo,” said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan.

Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn holed a monster 30ft birdie putt to win a playoff at the Manulife LPGA Classic against American Lexi Thompson and South Korean Chun In-gee in Cambridge, Ontario. Ariya’s joy stood in stark contrast to the disappointment felt by

Thompson, who frittered away a two-shot lead in regulation play by three-putting the final two holes for two bogeys. Ariya carded a closing three-under-par 69 in breezy conditions at Whistle Bear, while Thompson shot 72 and Chun 70. They all

finished at 17-under 271. “I just can’t believe I’ve won the tournament because when I got here I didn’t feel comfortable hitting the golf ball. I was scared to hit my tee shot. (Now) I feel better.” said an emotional Ariya.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

Finally! Jobe wins in America For nearly two decades, Brandt Jobe found himself in the middle of a winless drought. It was back in 1998 in Japan where he last lifted a tournament trophy. It was his 403rd attempt on all three US tours in a career spanning 27 years that got him his first win on American

soil. The wait ended at Principal Charity Classic event on the PGA Tour Champions (US Senior Tour) in Iowa. Jobe shot a final round 69 at Wakonda Club to finish at 14-under 202 for oneshot win over defending champ Scott McCarron who was joined Kevin

Sutherland at the second place. Money leader Bernhard Langer finished at 12-under. “It’s hard. You’re out here to win, and I haven’t done as good of a job as I would have liked,” Jobe said. “This is nice. It’s a little bit of a relief.”

SUNSHINE TOUR

Riekus Nortje claims maiden Sunshine Tour title

EUROPEAN TOUR

Rahm romps to Irish Open win Golf’s complicated rule book was again in focus as Jon Rahm cruised to a six-shot victory at the recently concluded Irish Open. The incident happened at the sixth hole as Rahm placed his marker to the side of his ball so that his playing partner Daniel Im can putt from further back. While returning to his marker,

Rahm placed his ball to the front, putting him apparently in violation of the rules with the threat of a two-stroke penalty. A similar incident earlier this year saw a four-stroke penalty imposed on the LPGA pro Lexi Thompson at ANA Inspiration in California which eventually cost her a second Major title. However, at Irish

Open, no penalty was imposed because Rahm “made a reasonable judgment” in replacing his ball. With three birdies and one eagle on the front nine, Rahm surged ahead of the pack carding a final round 65 to seal his maiden title on the European Tour at a massive 24-under-264.

Riekus Nortje kept a cool head at Nkana Golf Club to shoot a flawless four-underpar 68 final round of the Mopani Redpath Zambia Open and win his maiden Sunshine Tour title with a total 18-under-par. Ockie Strydom, who was in contention at one point, signed off with a final round twounder-par 70 before eventually settling for second position. “It hasn’t sunk in yet.” Nortje said after his win. “I think tomorrow I will definitely feel it. About two or three years ago I was nowhere with my golf. I had a (Sunshine Tour) card at one stage; lost the card, played Big Easy Tour. Playing the Big Easy was important for me.”

LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR

Golf’s youngest ever pro winner - 14-yearold Atthaya Thitikul With a stunning victory at Ladies European Thailand Championship, 14-year-old Thai amateur golfer Atthaya Thitikul become the youngest winner of a professional golf tournament. Prior to her, Lydia Ko held the European Tour record at 15 years, nine months and 17 days while Canadian Brooke Henderson held the world record at 14 years, nine months and three days. The Thai sensation eclipse both of them when she carded a final round 72 to finish five-under-par at the Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club for a two-shot victory over Mexican Ana Menendez. Menendez however bagged the £40,000 winner’s cheque due to Thitikul’s amateur status.

Breakthrough Victory for Nicholas Fung Overnight leader Malaysia’s Nicholas Fung secured his first Asian Tour title at the Queen’s Cup played at Santiburi Samuai Country Club with an impressive tournament total of 15-under-par 269. He edged out Thailand’s Jazz Janewattananond by one stroke to join countrymen Danny Chia, Airil Rizman and Ben Leong as winners on the region’s premier Tour. Fung is also the fifth first-

time winner this season. This was Fung’s 66th start on the Asian Tour. He previously finished runner-up at 2013 Indonesian Open, 2015 World Classic in Singapore and 2016 Resorts World Manila Masters. Fung earned US$90,000 to move up to 13th place on the Order of Merit with US$122,007. He finished 12th on the Merit list last year for his best career finish yet.

US OPEN 2017

Brooks Koepka Wins U.S. Open for His First Major South African, Breyten Meyer carded a final round 65 to blow away the competition at the South to East Challenge held at Ebotse Links in Benoni. At 13-under-par for the tournament, this was Meyer’s debut professional victory. Sunshine Tour Q-School winner Herman Loubser finished four shot adrift at second place while England’s Luke Joy, who missed the cut a week prior at Zambia Open, secured third place.

American Brooks Koepka staved off stiff challenge from Hideki Matsuyama and compatriot Brain Harman to win United States Open 2017 for his first Major title by four strokes. The 27-year-old carded a 72-hole total of 16-under272 to tie the tournament record for lowest total under par, which was set by McIlroy at Congressional Country Club in 2011. Holding firm against

buffeting winds and crushing pressure at Erin Hills, Wisconsin, Koepka broke away from a tight pack with three straight birdies on the back nine on the final day and closed with a 5-under 67 to claim the title. He takes home $2.16 million, the largest single-day earnings in golf. In the process, he also become the seventh consecutive first-time winner in the men’s majors.

Koepka turned pro in 2012 after a solid college career at Florida State. He joined the European Tour in 2013 and won the Turkish Airlines Open in 2014. He got his first PGA Tour title at the 2015 Phoenix Open. “Obviously the wind picked up and I felt like that played right into my hand,” said Koepka, who considers himself a good ball-striker and good putter.

It has sought to buy locally owned golf courses and refurbish them by adding or improving amenities such as upscale dining and event rooms. The deal comes three months after ClubCorp announced the retirement of its

CEO Eric Affeldt. The company has struggled to turn a profit, as its strategy of boosting its golf club memberships through promotions, refurbishments and acquisitions has proved costly. It said the sale to Apollo is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2017. KSL Capital acquired ClubCorp for $1.8 billion in October 2006 and took it public in 2013.

Advice to clubs, sell community:

GREGG PATTERSON BY VINEET MANN

Gregg Patterson became the General Manager of The Beach Club, Santa Monica, California in 1982 and went on to work there for 34 glorious years. He paved way for next generation in 2016 to move on to his next adventure as a full-time speaker and writer with his new company “Tribal Magic!!!” In acknowledgement of his efforts as an educator in both the universities and the corporate world, he was awarded the ‘2002 Gary Player Private Club Educator of the Year Award’ by Board Room magazine, the ‘Club Executive of the Year by the Club Management Association of America’ in 2015, the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award by the Asian Pacific Hospitality Summit’ in 2015 and the ‘2015 Board Room magazine Award of Dedication’ for his timeless, energetic and dedicated service to the private club industry. Bizgolf caught up with Gregg recently to address a few challenges faced by a modern club manager. Excerpts from the Interview:

In all your years of experience as a club manager, how would you best describe the golf club business? GP: The way I understand it, all clubs, anywhere in the world are in the business of selling community. I’ve noticed that with prospective members when they talk about a grand clubhouse, dining room or a golf course – these are just details, an excuse to experience community. We’ve had examples where families have taken up memberships at our club just because it provided the “warm embrace” that they were seeking for their growing family. They were all buying community.

What is your philosophy while creating such a community? GP: There are two things that I consider the fundamental building blocks of the club community. A need to belong in a group with common interests and a basic alignment of core values amongst the participants. People naturally want to be with others who share an interest in the same activities – be it golf or any other sport. As well as, they seek out a “tribe” that supports their values. Admit the right personalities and you’ll create community. This isn’t about being elitist, it’s about creating a membership that shares common values

and interests so that they create an environment that brings them back for more, week after week and year after year. Bricks and mortar attract but do not sustain. In the end, the sense of community prevails. How do you see the relationship between the clubs and media? GP: We live in an age where information is everything and the relationship with the local media is an important one. Media is the free channel of publicity and marketing. While it’s very important to do community building and engaging activities among club

members, it’s equally vital to publicise and market the same. People need to know ‘what’s happening’ at your club. Also, I think every club needs to develop a media response program should something newsworthy happen at the club or within the larger community which directly or indirectly involves the club members. Create a media kit which could be given to any media representatives making inquiries. What’s your advice to clubs that are going through a slowdown or depreciation due to infrastructure issues and lack of capital?

GP: I’m sure that no club is any different than The Beach Club, at least in this regard - things will age, fall out of fashion and inevitably wear out. Efforts can be made to delay the day of reckoning but eventually you’ll need to repair, replace or completely reconfigure the “hardscape” of your private club. When the time comes, cash will be needed as will the organizational and imaginative talent to make the right choices and to execute those choices with the least expenditure of time, money and organizational resources. The “Depreciation Mind-set” is an integral part of any organization that hopes to be an

How can a club manager efficiently manage the club staff and keep them motivated? GP: Building the employee team is a big deal. It is a slow dirty business and the type of team you develop and how you develop it are markers for your club’s service culture. Remember four things. First, well-meaning people, given the right training, tend to get hurt less than those who aren’t trained. Second, training is easy but making it stick is not. Third, people who are recognized as people with personalities tend to accept personal responsibility for their actions. And finally, people tend not to screw people they know and institutions they care for. If you can create policies that involve active participation from your staff and make them feel like an essential part of a big working machine (which they are!) then you should be fine.

humor THE BIG THREE Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods are standing at the throne of heaven. God looks at them and says, “Before granting you a place at my side, I must ask you what you have learned, what you believe in.” God asks Arnie first: “What do you believe?” Arnie thinks long and hard, looks God in the eye, and says, “I believe in hard work, and in staying true to family and friends. I believe in giving. I was lucky, but I always tried to do right by my fans.” God can’t help but see the essential goodness of Palmer, and offers him a seat to his left. Then God turns to Nicklaus and says, “What do you believe?” Jack says, “I believe passion, discipline, courage and honor are the fundamentals of life. Like Arnold, I believe in hard work. I, too, have been lucky, but win or lose, I’ve always tried to be a true sportsman, both on and off the playing fields.” God is greatly moved by Jack’s high-pitched eloquence, and he offers him a seat to his right.

LET IT BE Guy gets to a long par 3 over water. A voice from above says, “Hit the new Titleist Pro V.” The guy tees up the Titleist and takes a practice swing. The voice comes back, “Never mind, hit a range ball.”

IT’S NOT YOU A golfer hits a huge slice off the first tee. The ball soars over a fence and onto a highway, where it hits a car, which promptly crashes into a tree. The stunned golfer rushes into the golf shop and shouts, “Help! Help! I just hit a terrible slice off the first tee and hit a car and it crashed. What should I do?”

Finally, God turns to Woods: “And you, Tiger, what do you believe?” Tiger replies, “I believe you’re in my seat.”

And the pro says, “Try a slightly stronger grip.”

BREAKING A 100 Near the end of a particularly trying round of golf, during which the golfer had hit numerous fat shots, he said in frustration to his caddy, “I’d move heaven and earth to break a hundred on this course.” “Try heaven,” said the caddy. “You’ve already moved most of the earth.”
