For art lovers, the launch of A Smile at Arm’s Length featuring the intriguing etchings of Jiri Tibor Novak is a must for the Winter calendar as is the exhibition of masks created for the launch of Isobelle Carmody’s The Red Queen. We have a strong focus on history with Mark Dapin talking about his military history, The Nashos’ War and his latest novel, R&R. In addition, an insight into the local ancient stone arrangement, Wurdi Youang, after which the events’ space in the new Geelong Library & Heritage Centre is named, with Uncle Reg Abrahams and anthropologist Heather Threadgold, is bound to be fascinating. We also bring you a vast number of eKnow How events to enhance your digital literacy and plenty of activities for children and young people.

SPECIAL EVENTS UNMASKING THE WILD – AN EXHIBITION OF MASKS MADE BY CHILDREN'S ILLUSTRATORS AND ARTISTS

LEIGH HOBBS – OLD TOM, HORRIBLE HARRIET AND OTHER FREAKS 2016 Children’s Literature Laureate, Leigh Hobbs, is an artist and author who is famous for his quirky, individual characters including the furry, feral, rascally cat, Old Tom and the wicked, wild and wonderful Horrible Harriet. In this workshop, Leigh will guide us through the various stages of drawing the characters made popular in his books and inspire children to create their own characters and write their own stories. BYO scrap book or paper/clipboard and pencils. Most suitable for primary school-aged children with their parents/guardians.

This exhibition of masks comprises the original work of 22 brilliant artists. Created for the Masked Ball that launched Isobelle Carmody’s The Red Queen, the theme is the connection of humanity to nature. The masks will be auctioned to raise funds for two charities which mirror the concerns of the heroine in the Obernewtyn Chronicles, Elspeth Gordie: Animals Asia’s Moon Bear Sanctuary and an IBBY run Children in Crisis Fund. GREG DAY, JIRI TIBOR NOVAK AND SIAN MARLOW – A SMILE AT ARM'S LENGTH Celebrate the launch of this stunning limited-edition artist book, A Smile at Arm's Length. With text by Gregory Day, this beautiful collection contains etchings by Jiri Tiber Novak and is designed and constructed by Sian Marlow. The book will be launched by renowned poet Dr Amanda Johnson. OPEN MIND LECTURE SERIES WURDI YOUANG AND THE WADAWURRUNG LIVING SPACE

TIM FLANNERY – SUSTAINABLE POPULATION AND CLIMATE CHANGE

Learn how the local ancient stone arrangement, Wurdi Youang, holds the key to the Wadawurrung teachings of sacred sites, hunting grounds and seasonal movement within this region and how the diversity of natural resources has supported and determined living arrangements for the Wadawurrung community. Presented by anthropologist Heather Threadgold and Uncle Reg Abrahams.

Tim Flannery has published over thirty books including The Future Eaters, The Weather Makers and his latest release, Atmosphere of Hope. Named Australian Humanist of the Year in 2005 and Australian of the Year in 2007, he cofounded and was Chair of the Copenhagen Climate Council. He became Australia's Chief Climate Commissioner in 2011 and in 2013 he founded the Australian Climate Council. This fascinating Open Mind Lecture will see Tim Flannery tackle the issue of population, the economic factors driving population growth and its impact on climate.

LUKE WILLIAMS – THE ICE AGE – A JOURNEY TO CRYSTAL METH ADDICTION

AMANDA SINCLAIR – LEADING MINDFULLY

Combining memoirs and journalism, Luke Williams will talk about the confronting story which charts his own addiction and recovery when researching his book on crystal meth. He also examines the social problems that surround ice, and discusses whether its abuse is an epidemic or a moral panic about the underclass.

Faced with a never-ending 'to do' list, expanding demands and depleted energies at work and at home? Learn how mindfulness can provide a practical, simple and powerful path. Amanda specialises in enhancing the individual's capacity for day-to-day leadership within organisations, communities, schools and families.

AMINAH HART – HOW I MET YOUR FATHER SHIREEN MORRIS – THE FORGOTTEN PEOPLE Adviser to Noel Pearson and co-editor of The Forgotten People, Shireen Morris challenges the assumption that constitutional recognition of indigenous Australians is a project of the left. She seeks to demonstrate that there may be reforms that can achieve the change sought by indigenous leaders and people on both sides of politics and that are both practical and symbolically powerful. DOROTHY JOHNSTON – THROUGH A CAMEL’S EYE Award-winning author Dorothy Johnston drew on her childhood and family memories for her novel, One for the Master, set in a woollen mill on the Barwon River. Her novel was shortlisted for the 1998 Miles Franklin award and after thirty years in Canberra, Dorothy Johnston has returned to the region and has published the first of her new sea-change mystery series, Through a Camel’s Eye, set in Queenscliff. Her quirky memoir shares the diverse working style of a long-term author juggling her writing career and a family.

Mark Dapin visits to talk about the long and winding road that led him to create R&R, a black-comedy Vietnam War thriller described as Apocalypse Now meets Good Morning Vietnam. He will also discuss the many interviews he conducted with Vietnam vets for his award-winning military history, The Nashos’ War.

The City of Greater Geelong presents Cyber Safety sessions aimed at parents who want to understand young people's use of the internet, social media and gaming. Sessions draw on experience from social media experts, law enforcement and youth workers.
