OPEN MIND SERIES

OPEN MIND SERIES JULIENNE VAN LOON – THE THINKING WOMAN On the eve of International Women’s Day, we present award-winning novelist Julienne van Loon to discuss her extraordinary new book, The Thinking Woman. “The thinking woman exists: she is alive and well. Browsing through the philosophy sections of some of the world’s best bookshops one has to be sharp-eyed and persistent to find her... Life, for the thinking woman, can be messy and complicated. She is not a philosopher. She is rarely a household name. When she gets too powerful, there is a remarkably consistent method of bringing her down. These are some of the reasons why her work has so much to offer.” The Thinking Woman turns our attention toward the work of six leading contemporary female thinkers, while sharing personal stories along the way. In her book, Julienne discusses ‘love’ with author and cultural critic, Laura Kipnis; ‘play’ with award-winning novelist and essayist, Siri Hustvedt; ‘work’ with author and socialist feminist activist, Nancy Holmstrom; ‘fear’ with philosopher, literary critic and author, Julia Kristeva; ‘wonder’ with feminist cultural historian Marina Warner; and ‘friendship’ with pre-eminent feminist philosopher, Rosi Braidotti.

Julienne van Loon holds a Vice Chancellor’s Senior Research Fellowship with the writing and publishing program at RMIT University. Julienne’s honours include the Australian/Vogel’s Award and an appointment as Honorary Fellow in Writing with the University of Iowa. The Thinking Woman is her first non-fiction book. MARK BRANDI – THE RIP

HELEN THOMAS – MURDER ON EASEY STREET In 1977, Suzanne Armstrong and Susan Bartlett were savagely murdered in their house on Easey Street, Collingwood – stabbed multiple times while Suzanne’s baby slept. The case became one of Melbourne’s most infamous unsolved crimes. ABC journalist Helen Thomas was a cub reporter at The Age when the murders were committed, and forty years on, she has chased down new leads into bohemia and the gritty underworld to examine the truth in one of Melbourne’s most infamous suburbs.

The Rip is an urban crime novel following a hidden trio of drifters and addicts in inner city Melbourne. Author Mark Brandi’s inspiration came from his intimate knowledge of Richmond, where in 2017 heroin overdose deaths reached a 17-year high, with 34 of those deaths occurring in a four-block area. While faced with enormously challenging circumstances, both main characters are portrayed with respect and dignity, and not as passive victims of circumstance. Mark is a rising star of Australian literature. His first novel Wimmera won the coveted British Crime Writers’ Association Debut Dagger, and was named Best Debut at the 2018 Australian Indie Book Awards.
