We’re delighted to share our sensational summer program with you which is full of big names, big ideas and even bigger experiences for people of all ages. Christos Tsiolkas will be talking about the birth of the Christian Church, Nicole Haddow will discuss the path to financial success in Smashed Avocado and in her breathtaking sequel to the The Tattooist of Auschwitz, Heather Morris unpacks the triumph of human will in Cilka’s Journey. Find out more on pages 7-13. This school holidays the whole family can escape to the cool of the library – we have great programs, history, displays, technology, plus of course books, eBooks, audiobooks and DVDs for children (and adults, too!). Christmas really is the most wonderful time of the year, especially in the close communities we enjoy in the Geelong region. You can find our special Christmas events on pages 14 and 15 for adults and page 40 for children. And finally, I’d like to wish ‘happy birthday’ to Leopold Library, which opened on 3 December 2018. This fantastic library is a credit to its enthusiastic staff and the community that has embraced it. If you haven’t visited yet, don’t delay – it’s a wonderful space. SAUCY PAT BRONTË We know of his children Charlotte, Emily and Anne, but we know very little of him. Patrick Brontë – his wife called him Saucy Pat - was the son of an Irish potato farmer who taught himself to read and won a Cambridge scholarship. Despite being an Anglican priest for over fifty years, he was centre stage in a literary scandal and a murderous revolution. For ages biographers have got it wrong – now discover the truth. SHERLOCK HOLMES COMES TO GEELONG! Sherlock Holmes has appeared in more plays, books and films than any other fictional character. Cenarth ‘Ken’ Fox knows a bit about Mr Holmes, having written three plays and five books about Sherlock and staged his ‘Sherlockian’ show over 200 times to adults and children. In this family-friendly show you’ll meet Arthur Conan Doyle, Holmes, Watson and Moriarty, the schoolboy Sherlock Holmes and Lord Byron and witness the detective skills performed by Sherlock Holmes. DIARY WRITING WORKSHOP Ever wanted to know more about how to keep a diary? Dr June Alexander is a non-fiction writer with special skills and interest in diary writing, mentoring and editing. SUBMERGED – STORIES OF AUSTRALIA’S SHIPWRECKS Shipwrecks are an important part of Australia’s rich maritime heritage. BRONNIE MASEFAU – STYLING YOUR HOME

ROBYN ROWLAND – SERENDIPITY AND THE CURIOUS MIND In 2009 Robyn Rowland visited Turkey for the first time and fell in love with the country. After that, a silken thread drew Robyn through the countries of the old Ottoman Turkey. Mosaics from the Map, her 10th book of poems, covered these travels. Her new book, Under This Saffron Sun explores the Turkey of today. This presentation, combining photographs, poetry and images, promises to be a unifying and exciting journey of travel and literature. Robyn has written 11 books of poetry and her work appears in national/international journals, over forty anthologies and eight editions of Best Australian Poems. Interior designer Bronnie Masefau is renowned for her residential designs and has over 25 years of experience in interior design. She is also the author of five books, including her latest The Meaning of Home: A Place to Belong, in which she explores how the spaces we live in contribute to and craft our lives. IAN ROGERS – GEELONG BOTANIC GARDENS This spectacular book takes readers on a pictorial journey through time. See the evolution of Geelong’s world-famed Botanic Gardens from the original aspirational vision, to the modern green space overlooking Corio Bay today. Fred Watson is an English-born astronomer and popular scientist. In 1995 he became astronomer in charge of the Australian Astronomical Observatory, but is best known for his work with science outreach, for which he has written many books, as well as musical and choral works. On top of his many nationwide radio slots with the ABC, Watson has also been a frequent guest on television show, The Project. In January 2010, Watson was made a member of the Order of Australia for service to astronomy, particularly the promotion and popularisation of space science through public outreach. BLANCHE D’ALPUGET – BOB HAWKE: THE COMPLETE BIOGRAPHY Bob Hawke began life as a good Christian boy from a teetotal family. He became a wild, drinking, womanising student, a Rhodes Scholar, a champion of workers, a folk hero recognised throughout the country, and a dynamic politician who was elected four times as Australia’s Prime Minister. Bob’s widow and biographer, Blanche d’Alpuget is an acclaimed novelist, biographer and essayist. She has won numerous literary awards, including the inaugural Australasian Prize for Commonwealth Literature in 1987. Join Blanche in conversation with Robert Gott to discuss her definitive commemorative biography marking Bob Hawke’s extraordinary life and legacy. J.M. GREEN – SHOOT THROUGH J.M. Green is a crime writer based in Melbourne’s western suburbs. Her debut novel, Good Money, the first hardboiledcrime novel featuring Stella Hardy, was shortlisted for a 2016 Ned Kelly Award, the Sisters in Crime's Davitt Award for best debut, as well as the 2014 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for an Unpublished Manuscript. NICOLE HADDOW – SMASHED AVOCADO At thirty, journalist Nicole Haddow had an unstable income, no financial plan and only credit-card debt to her name. But less than two years later she was a homeowner. In Smashed Avocado, Nicole explains the steps she took to purchase her own home, and interviews other people who have found diverse ways to enter the property market, including rentvesting, flipping, Airbnb, tiny homes and buying regionally.

DI WEBSDALE-MORRISSEY – ON A WING AND A PRAYER In 1934, Melbourne’s Lord Mayor announced a London-to-Melbourne air race to celebrate his City’s centenary. Kate wanted to write about what transgender people experience psychologically and physically. JOAN ATHERTON HOOPER – NOTHING TO CRY ABOUT: A MEMOIR A candid memoir looking back over a tumultuous life, from becoming an orphan and ward of the state at two years of age after her father’s murder, to becoming an abandoned wife in Melbourne with young children who later struggle with drug, alcohol and mental health issues. CRAFT FOR A CAUSE – PENGUIN JUMPERS Oil pollution is a serious threat to little penguins. They will try to preen the toxic oil from their feathers and ingesting it can kill them. Little penguin rehabilitation jumpers play an important role in saving them but we need to ensure they fit the penguins properly and are safe to use. If you are a confident knitter and can follow a pattern, please join us at Corio Library to help knit penguin jumpers. No bookings required.

SLOW FLOWER MOVEMENT Have you heard of the Slow Flower Movement? It is all about taking the best care of your flowers and the environment by letting things grow at their own pace, in their true season, with the help of bees rather than chemicals and pesticides. AN INTRODUCTION TO SYMBOLISM IN CHRISTIAN ART Ron Hedgcock, local art historian and researcher, has assembled many brilliantly coloured slides of artworks to deliver a series of academic lectures on Religious Art history, under the title of 2000 Years of Christian Art. DNA IN FOCUS – AND IN PLAIN ENGLISH There are two main outcomes from a DNA test for family history purposes: ethnicity estimates and DNA matches. This presentation looks at both, but with more emphasis on DNA matches and how you can solve your family history puzzles.
