Notes 1. Béla Bartók composed "Dearie, Dearie, Do You Have a Daughter?" between 1908–1909. It was rst published in his collection of easy children's pieces, For Children, published between 1909–1911 in four volumes. Throughout this movement the music contains calls and responses. These are orchestrated for color change, but at times they contrast through dynamics. For instance, have your ensemble practice mm. 9– 18 and 47–54 with extreme dynamic changes, reversing the dynamics (p followed by f) so they get used to the change. The internal section (starting at m. 19) is slighly faster. The rhythm is propelled by an 8th-note accompaniment. It will be easy and tempting for the students to rush through this section and to cheat the tenuto notes that end the phrases. 2. "Come Home, Lidi" was composed by Bartók in 1908–1909 and was originally published in his For Children collection of easy children's pieces in 1909–1911. Though only Andante, this piece has a pleading melody that aches for the return of Bartók's daughter, Lidi. The hairpins should be followed as closely as possible to create a swelling, sea-like motion. In the nal 8 bars it is important that the utes and clarinets don't let the pitch drift on the sustained notes. If breath support is an issue you can allow them to fade to nothing before starting the new pitch in m. 22. 3. Like the rst two movements, "Song of the Vagabond" was composed between 1908–1909 and published in Bartók's collection of easy pieces, For Children, in 1909–1911. Bartók was one of the 20th-Centuries rst musicologists who studied the folk music of his native Hungary. Much of his music exploited the shifting modes and exoticism of his folk sources and "Song of the Vagabond" is no exception. The chromatic shifting between a major and minor tonic chord and the alternating raised and lowered seventh scale degrees will provide opportunities to work on tuning and intonation. The decending chromatic line tenor saxophone and trombone 2 in mm. 5–6 should also be emphasized. 4. Bartók composed "Slovak Lad's Dance" in 1908 and published it in his collection of easy children's pieces, 10 Easy Pieces, in 1909. This quick duple meter has a strong march feel with syncopated phrase endings. It should be energetic and exciting. In order to help the students count the syncopation and staccato 8th-notes the snare can provide an optional rim click to act like a metronome. This might be especially helpful in mm. 42–47 with the ritardando and accelerando. The ending should culminate with a dramatic ourish after a relatively slow build up. The crescendo is orchestrated so you can ensure that the true crescendo doesn't start until m. 51.
