Course Leader Biographies Stephen Barter Stephen qualified in 1985 from Guys Hospital, London. He underwent a period of postgraduate oral surgery and orthodontic training and is a GDC registered Specialist in Oral Surgery. Stephen has been established in Eastbourne for over 20 years and established Perlan Specialist Dental Centre in 2007. This specialist referral practice is well known for providing expertise in dealing with cases of all levels of complexity with a philosophy of comprehensive planning, combined with empathy to the patients needs. This prestigious clinic is designed to ensure that both the dental team and their patients will benefit from comprehensive facilities, supporting the range of services that we can provide for our patients. He is a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England; a Fellow of the Straumann Clinic, University of Berne, Switzerland; a member of the Association of Dental Implantology; a member of the British Association of Oral Surgeons; and a member of the European Association of Osseointegration. Stephen is a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) and is a past UK Section Chairman, where he was involved in the development of a comprehensive training program meeting the GDC guidelines for implant dentistry. He lectures nationally and internationally, and has presented at many major international conferences. His work is also published. He is actively involved in research projects in the field of dental implants and dental tissue regeneration. Colin Campbell Colin is a GDC registered Specialist in Oral Surgery who qualified from the University of Glasgow in 1994. Colin has worked previously in oral and maxillofacial surgery units in Glasgow, Nottingham and Derby, before entering practice as a vocational trainee and then becoming a vocational trainer. Colin became involved in implant dentistry as a clinician in 1998 and began lecturing in 2000. He was awarded Fellowship of the International Team for Implantology in 2006 and was the Communications Officer for the UK and Ireland section: sitting on the Leadership Team of the organisation from 2011 – 2014. Colin is the Clinical Director at The Campbell Clinic which is a multi-disciplinary private specialist prac-
tice in Nottingham and also the Clinical Director of Refine Specialist Dental Care in Derbyshire. Ulpee Darbar Ulpee is a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and is on the specialist lists in Restorative Dentistry, Periodontology, Prosthodontics and Endodontics. She is Divisional Clinical Director of the Eastman Dental Hospital and also the Lead for dental implants at the Eastman as well as being Clinical Tutor for the trainees and Programme Director for the Dental SHOs. She graduated from University of Wales College of Medicine in 1986 and after a brief period in general dental practice started her hospital career in 1987. She successfully completed her training in Restorative Dentistry 1996 and took up her consultant position in 1997 including the role of Clinical Lead for the Department of Periodontology. Shortly after being appointed she also lead the academic training programme for 1 year. Since her appointment she has held several leadership positions at the Eastman which have included Clinical Audit Lead, Lead for Referrals and Programme Coordinator for Specialist Registrar. Nikos Donos Professor Nikolaos Donos is the Chair of Periodontology & Implant Dentistry and the Head of the Clinical Oral Research Center at the Institute of Dentistry, Barts & The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) specializing in the clinical treatment of patients with periodontal disease and implant dentistry, through the provision of randomized controlled clinical trials and at clinically applicable translational research studies. Prior to this appointment, Professor Donos was the Head & Chair of Periodontology, Director of Research and Program Director for the M.Clin.Dent. training program in Periodontology at the UCL- Eastman Dental Institute, London. In 2009, Professor Donos was awarded the title of Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry in Hong Kong and in 2012 he was awarded the title of Adjunct Professor at the Dental School, Griffith University, Australia. In 2015, Professor Donos was awarded the title of Honorary Professor at UCL-Eastman Dental Institute.
Professor Donos is involved as editorial board member in a number of international and national peer-reviewed journals in the field of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry especially in relation to regenerative procedures/implant surgery and has published extensively in both fields. Professor Donos has published more than 150 scientific publications in the field of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry which is a testament to his professional and scientific commitment in the relevant fields. In 2011, Professor Donos was awarded the prestigious IADR-Periodontology Group Award in Periodontal Regenerative Medicine during the annual International Association of Dental Research (IADR) meeting in San Diego, California. Furthermore, in June 2011, Professor Donos together with his research team, received a commendation certificate during the prestigious Medical Futures event for their (UCLB) patented technology which is based on their research work on synthetic peptide drugs for bone, blood vessels and nerve regeneration. The clinical expertise of Professor Donos is in the field of Periodontics and Implant Dentistry. He has significant experience and expertise in the treatment of periodontal (gum) disease, periodontal and bone tissue regeneration, implant related surgical procedures as well as treatment of peri-implantitis, topics which he regularly lectures on a national and international level. Ian Dunn Ian qualified from Leeds in 1998. In 2001 he was awarded Membership of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners. In 2002 he joined the teaching staff at Liverpool Dental Hospital in the periodontology department where he is currently a Senior Clinical Teacher and Undergraduate Teaching Lead in periodontology. In 2010 he completed his MSc in periodontology and in 2013 he was admitted to the GDC specialist list in periodontics. Ian spends three days a week in private practice in the North West of England and takes referrals for all aspects of periodontology. He is the British Society of Periodontology regional representative for Merseyside and Cheshire.
Course Leader Biographies David Furze David qualified from Cardiff University in 2000 and joined the Royal Army Dental Corp. He attained the rank of Major with postings including Germany, Bosnia, Brunei and the UK. He completed initial surgical training in the Royal Surrey County Hospital and then joined private practice. He has since completed further postgraduate training at Kings College London in Prosthodontics. David’s implant training has also included a fellowship at the University of Berne, Switzerland. David has published extensively in the areas of aesthetics in dental implants, immediate loading of dental implants, ceramic implants and digital dentistry, he has also published multiple research papers in peer reviewed international dental journals. His work has been presented at the European Association of Osseintegration congresses in Athens and Copenhagen and he has also presented at the ITI World Congress in Geneva. David lectures both nationally and internationally on both the surgical and restorative aspects of dental implants. He has recently lectured in France, Switzerland, Latvia, Dubai and Oman as well as lecturing in the UK. David is a founder member of The Byrnes Implant Study Group, the BDA and SAAD (Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry). David’s practice is now restricted to advanced prosthodontics and dental implants. Away from dentistry, David is a keen rugby player and snowboarder. Kashif Hafeez Dr Kashif Hafeez has been honoured with Membership and Fellowship from Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland and has been admired with Fellowship from Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. He has completed his post graduate certificate in Medical and Dental education from Oxford Brookes University. He has special interest in Oral Surgery and Dental Implantology and has been practising in the picturesque Cotswold UK. He had been a post graduate Dental Foundation & therapist trainer for Oxford Deanery and due to his passion for quality in education has been appointed as Examiner for Royal College of Surgeons Ireland and Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. He teaches for the M Clindent programme at BPP University UK and lectures internationally on Oral surgery
& Dental Implantology. He has been presenting his scientific work & research at international dental conferences and has been conducting dental Implantology courses worldwide. In addition, he serves as an Editorial Board member for Porodental CPD, an Expert and Advisor for General Dental Council UK. Previously he was honoured with the Dentist of the year award by APPS UK and has been recently awarded by Fellowship by the Faculty of Dental Trainers Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh.

Andrew Legg
Dr. Merli is Professor of Periodontology (UPM), President of the Clinica Merli and Scientific Director of Accademia Dentofacciale Merli. He is also on the Editorial Board of the European Journal of Oral Implantology and an Editorial Consultant for the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry.
Andrew graduated from the University of Manchester in 2001. Extensive experience in general practice has given Andrew grounding in all aspects of dental care allowing a fully comprehensive approach to patient care. Andrew has undertaken countless hours of training, including an 18-month Clinical Certificate in Implantology at the University of Sheffield and Advanced Surgical Training at the Royal College of Surgeons. More recently, Andrew passed his Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh. Andrew also works as a Clinical Teaching Fellow in Oral Surgery at the University of Manchester. Charlie Maran Charlie Maran qualified in 1988 from the University of Dundee and immediately left for the Eastman Dental Center in New York for a 2 year postgraduate training program. On return to the UK Charlie worked at the Dental school at Newcastle University and completed an Masters degree in Restorative Dentistry. Charlie is a GDC registered specialist in Periodontics and is the periodontist to the department of restorative dentistry at the Edinburgh Dental Institute where he teaches twice weekly

Together with his brother Aldo and sister Monica, Dr. Merli runs a private practice founded by his father Mario.
Francis Nohl Francis is a specialist in Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics, Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Newcastle Dental Hospital, and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at the School of Dental Sciences, Newcastle University. He trained in medicine followed by dentistry at London University before undertaking postgraduate training at the Eastman Dental Institute in London and Newcastle University. Francis leads the implant team in Newcastle; responsible for service delivery and specialist registrar clinical training. He has been teaching throughout much of his career and is founder and Degree Programme Director of the Diploma in Clinical Implant Dentistry at Newcastle University and examiner and board member for the Diploma in Implant Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In 2002 Rob became an implant tutor for a dental corporate and has taught many dentists on all aspects of implant therapy. Rob has published several articles on implant therapy, is a mentor and faculty educator for the ADI (Association of Dental Implantology), an international speaker for the ITI (International Team of Implantology), and is a Royal College of Surgeons examiner for the implant diploma (RCS Edin). Phil Ower Phil qualified from King’s London in 1978. He joined the RAF after qualifying and was a general dental practitioner until taking an MSc in periodontology in 1992, after which he was RAF Adviser in periodontology and ran the RAF School of Dental Hygiene. For 10 years he worked alongside the renowned Bernie Kieser at the Periodontal Practice in London and now practices exclusively at the Briars Dental Centre in Newbury. He has been an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MGDS) and has served two terms on the Council of the British Society of Periodontology (BSP). He is responsible for the perio component of the FGDP(UK) Diploma in Restorative Dentistry in both London and Manchester. Amit Patel Amit is registered with the General Dental Council as a Specialist in Periodontics. His special interests are dental implants, regenerative and aesthetic periodontics. Amit graduated from the University of Liverpool and completed a 4 year specialist training programme in periodontics at Guy’s, King’s & St Thomas’ Dental Institute. Amit obtained his Membership in Restorative Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and became a registered Specialist in Periodontics. He has worked with several different implant systems, lectured both nationally and internationally and published in the field of dental implantology and periodontics. Amit is also an Associate Specialist in Periodontics at the Birmingham Dental School. He has recently been invited to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Amit is also
the principal specialist and director at Birmingham Dental Specialists.
Isabella Rocchietta Isabella graduated in dentistry at the University of Milan, Italy. She was then awarded a scholarship from the department of Medicine, University of Milan, to train as a clinical and research fellow at the Department of Periodontology, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston, MA. Isabella is currently a lecturer for the Diploma in Implant Dentistry at The Eastman Dental Institute, UCL, London as well as being affiliated with the Department of Biomaterials, Institute for Clinical Sciences, The Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, where she conducts clincal research in the field of implantology and bone regeneration. From 2002 to 2011 she has been instructor at the Department of Periodontology, University of Milan, Italy and research consultant for the Institute for Dental Research and Education (IDRE). Currently elected member of the board of directors of the EAO (European Association for Osseointegration) and Chairman of the EAO Junior Committee from 2007 to 2011. She is co-editor of the European Academy for Osseointegration journal, Inspyred, and reviewer for the main scientific journals. Author of several international peer reviewed publications and book chapters and International speaker on bone regeneration, bone grafting with growth factors, tissue engineering, soft and hard tissue neoformation with autogenous living cells, osseointegration and implant protocols.
Cemal Ucer Cemal is on the specialist list of Oral Surgery. He is an elected Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) and Honorary Professor and Clinical Lead of the MSc programme in implantology at University of Salford (2008-2015) and at Edge Hill University (2014-). He is also a past president (2011-2013) of the Association of Dental Implantology (ADI). He is a co-founder of the ICE Foundation that
incorporates Implant Centres of Excellence (ICE) clinics, ICE Postgraduate Dental institute and ICE Mentee School/MSc programme in implant dentistry. Cemal has been running the highly respected Multi-System Implantology Certificate Course at Trafford General in Manchester since the early 90’s where he has personally directed the postgraduate training of 100’s of dentists. He has lectured widely in implantology since the 1990’s and runs a private referral practice limited to oral surgery.
