SYMANTEC
Symantec reveals a year of growth in Cybercrime During 2009 Symantec blocked an average 100 potential attacks per second, showing no slowdown in Cybercrime’s financial and geographical growth throughout the global economic crisis Symantec Corp. released its new Internet Security Threat Report volume XV, which highlights key trends in cybercrime from Jan.1, 2009 to Dec. 31, 2009. In a year bookended by two very prominent Cyber attacks – Conficker in the opening months of the year and Hydraq at the very end – Symantec’s Internet Security Threat Report reveals continued growth in both the volume and sophistication of cybercrime attacks.
The scale of these attacks and the fact that they originate from across the world, makes this a truly international problem requiring the cooperation of both the private sector and world governments
“Attackers have evolved from simple scams to highly sophisticated espionage campaigns targeting some of the world’s largest corporations and government entities,” said Stephen Trilling, senior vice president, Security Technology and Response, Symantec. “The scale of these attacks and the fact that they originate from across the world, makes this a truly international problem requiring the cooperation of both the private sector and world governments.” Notable trends highlighted in this year’s report include: An increase in the number of targeted threats focused on enterprises. Given the potential for monetary gain from compromised corporate intellectual property (IP), cybercriminals have turned their attention toward enterprises. The report found that attackers are leveraging the abundance of personal information openly available on social networking sites to synthesize socially engineered attacks on key individuals within targeted companies. Hydraq gained a great deal of notoriety at the beginning of 2010, but was only the latest in a long line of such targeted attacks including Shadow Network in 2009 and Ghostnet in 2008. Attack toolkits make cybercrime easier than ever. Cybercrime attack toolkits have lowered the bar to entry for new cybercriminals, making it easy for unskilled attackers to compromise computers and steal information. One such toolkit called Zeus (Zbot) which can be purchased for as little as $700, automates the process of creating customized malware capable of stealing personal information. Using kits like Zeus, attackers created literally millions of new malicious code variants in an effort to evade detection by security software. Web-based attacks continued to grow unabated. Today’s attackers leverage social engineering techniques to lure unsuspecting users to malicious websites. These websites then attack the victim’s Web browser and vulnerable plug-ins normally used to view video or document files. In particular, 2009 saw dramatic growth in the number of Web-based attacks targeted at PDF viewers; this accounted for 49 percent
of observed Web-based attacks. This is a sizeable increase from the 11 percent reported in 2008. Malicious activity takes root in emerging countries. The report saw firm signs that malicious activity is now taking root in countries with an emerging broadband infrastructure, such as Brazil, India, Poland, Vietnam and Russia. In 2009, these countries moved up the rankings as a source and target of malicious activity by cybercriminals. The findings from the report suggest that government crackdowns in developed countries have led cybercriminals to launch their attacks from the developing world, where they are less likely to be prosecuted.
Downadup (Conficker) still very prevalent. It was estimated that Downadup was on more than 6.5 million PCs worldwide at the end of 2009. Thus far, machines still infected with Downadup/Conficker have not been utilized for any significant criminal activity, but the threat remains a viable one.
Other ISTR Highlights:
Compromised identity information continues to grow. Sixty percent of all data breaches that exposed identities were the result of hacking. In a sign that this issue is not limited to a few larger enterprises, the Symantec State of Enterprise Security Report 2010 reported that 75 percent of enterprises surveyed experienced some form of cyber attack in 2009.
Malicious code is more rampant than ever. In 2009, Symantec identified more than 240 million distinct new malicious programs, a 100 percent increase over 2008. Top threats. The Sality.AE virus, the Brisv Trojan and the SillyFDC worm were the threats most frequently blocked by Symantec security software in 2009.
Another turbulent year for spam. In 2009, spam made up 88 percent of all e-mail observed by Symantec, with a high of 90.4 percent in May and a low of 73.7 percent in February. Of the 107 billion spam messages distributed globally per day on average, 85 percent were from botnets. The 10 major bot networks, including Cutwali, Rustock and Mega-D now control
at least 5 million compromised computers. Throughout 2009, Symantec saw botnet infected computers being advertised in the underground economy for as little as 3 cents per computer. Applying security patches continues to be a challenge for many users. The report found that maintaining a secure, patched system became more challenging than ever in 2009. Moreover, many users are failing to patch even very old vulnerabilities. For example, the Microsoft Internet Explorer ADODB.Stream Object File Installation Weakness was published on August 23, 2003, and fixes have been available since July 2, 2004, yet it was the second-most attacked Web-based vulnerability in 2009.

E3
highlights 2010 Microsoft kicked-off this year's E3 with another raft of huge reveals which point the way to another fantastic year for the industry. With the upcoming Kinect, tons of exciting new games and a redesigned Xbox 360 to look forward to, 2010 promises to be another explosive year. Kristan Reed reports...
MICROSOFT PROJECT NATAL BECOMES KINECT Microsoft made it another E3 to remember by showing the world what they can expect from the Kinect when it launches across the world this November. Designed to work on every Xbox 360 console, Microsoft's Kinect peripheral promises to revolutionise how we interact with our games and entertainment. With no controller required, the Kinect will "remove the last barrier between you and the experiences you love." Whether you're watching a video, navigating the dashboard, chatting to a friend or playing a game, the Kinect reacts and responds to your gestures and voice. With simple voice commands and gestures, you can interact with your entertainment in ways you never imagined.
15 KINECT GAMES AVAILABLE FOR LAUNCH The Kinect is set to hit the ground running with an array of incredible titles that demonstrate this superb new technology. Here are the highlights:
DANCE CENTRAL Dance with your friends and family in this full-body, controller-free dance video game, featuring fun choreography for beginners and experts.
KINECT ADVENTURES "Jump, dodge and kick your way through exciting adventures" in outer space, roaring rapids and and mountaintop obstacle courses.
NEW XBOX 360 REVEALED! Microsoft took the wraps of the latest revision to the Xbox 360 family, and revealed a sleek, slimmer model, with a host of new features. Due to be released at the great value price of £199 on July 16th, the console now benefits from built-in Wi-Fi N, a 250GB internal hard disk, touch sensitive buttons and a "whisper-quiet" fan that you'll barely even know it's switched on.
YOUR SHAPE: FITNESS EVOLVED Keeping active is set to be a key part of the Kinect experience, and this title lets users work out with personal trainer to meet their fitness goals. KINECTIMALS Build lasting friendships with some of the world’s most exotic creatures, where they can hear your voice and respond to commands like a real pet. KINECT JOY RIDE The first controller-free racing game lets players pull off "massive jumps and full body stunts" in this classic kart racing title. KINECT SPORTS A sporing title like no other, featuring football, beach volleyball, bowling, table tennis, track and field, and boxing. Throw, kick, serve and spike, just like it real life.
The console also connects straight to the Kinect, with no need to plug the Kinect into an power source, and with five USB ports, users will find it easy to plug in extra storage and charge cables when they need to. EXCITING NEW GAMES COMING TO XBOX 360 FORZA A Kinect-enabled version of the Turn 10 classic due out in 2011, boasting 60 FPS visuals. KINGDOMS Exclusive, gritty looking 360 exclusive from Crytek, the makers of Far Cry and Crysis. STAR WARS KINECT Wield a light saber like a true Jedi in this fantastic looking Kinetic-enabled title from LucasArts. FABLE III Confirmed by Peter Molyneux for an October 26th release, this looked like another classic in the making. HALO REACH With the biggest console beta in history, Halo Reach is expected to be the biggest title in the series
NINTENDO 3DS REVEALED The first-ever showing of the forthcoming Nintendo 3DS was undoubtedly one of the main talking points of the show. Not only the first-ever handheld console to support 3D, but the first to dispense with the need for glasses, attendees were gobsmacked at the quality of the effect. Said to be more powerful than the PSP, the dual-screen device looks like a smarter, sleeker DSi, with the top screen given over to the lenticular 3D display, and the lower acting as a touchscreen. The device comes with a slider to enable you to adjust the depth and strength of the 3D effect, as well as a super-responsive analogue joystick just above the dpad.

E3 HIGHLIGHTS
Various classic Nintendo titles were demonstrated, including The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, Mario Kart, Paper Mario and Animal Crossing, but the game that really stole the show was Konami's Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater, with stunning crisp visuals and 3D effects that have to be seen to be believed. No release date or price has been announced as yet, but sources suggest that "just before Christmas or early next year" are likely. Stay tuned in the coming months for more news on this phenomenally exciting new product. STUNNING NEW NINTENDO GAMES ON THE WAY As if the 3DS reveal wasn't enough, Nintendo also took the wraps off a clutch of exclusive new Wii titles, all of which were absolutely top-notch. Star billing went to The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword (due 2011), but it was run pretty close by the fantastic Kirby's Epic Yarn (due Autumn 2010), and the long-awaited Donkey Kong Country Returns (Christmas 2010), as well as Metroid: Other M (Q3 2010), and Mario Sports Mix (2011).
TAKE 2 2K GAMES 2K Games' line-up truly impressed with the first showings of XCOM, and Sid Meier's Civilization V, as well as the soon-to-be-released Mafia 2. XCOM (360, PC) reinvents the classic franchise as a first person title promising "white-knuckle tension and fear that comes with confronting an elusive and deadly enemy". Coming this Autumn to PC, Civilization V takes strategy gaming to "unprecedented heights," adding new ways to play and win and new tools to manage and expand your civilization. Whilst, Mafia 2 (PC, 360, PS3) promises to be a cinematic action adventure masterpiece, set in 1940s and 50s America. Finally, 2K Sports continues to refined its approach to basketball videogames with NBA 2K11, offering more polished and professional pre-game intros, cameras angles, and graphics, as well as giving players more control over the action on the court than ever before.
UBISOFT It was an exceptionally busy show for the French publisher, with a fantastic and varied line-up that had something for everyone across all formats. As usual, we can look
forward to some heavy hitters in the Christmas market, including Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Driver: San Francisco, Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. 2, Shaun White Skateboarding and Raving Rabbids: Travel In Time. Also keep an eye on its Kinect-exclusive launch titles MotionSports and Your Shape: Fitness Evolved, the PC-only Battle Tag, as well as the incredible Michael Jackson title, where his legion of fans will be able to sing and dance along to all his classic hits (including a Kinect-enabled version for 360). Early next year we can look forward to the superb-looking Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, as well as the long-awaited disaster title I Am Alive, and multi-sensory shooter Child of Eden, from the maker of the iconic Rez.
KONAMI KONAMI UNVEILS CLASSY NEW LINE-UP The Japanese giant chose E3 to unveil a raft of exciting new titles, headed up by an all-new Silent Hill, due for release next year on 360 and PS3, and developed by Czech studio, Vatra Games. Elsewhere, we can look forward to a completely revamped PES 2011 (multi), a new fantasyhorror title next year from Oxford's Rebellion, called NeverDead (360, PS3), the superb God Of War-style Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (360, PS3) while old school Japanese shoot 'em up, Otomedius Excellent will arrive later this year exclusively on 360. Of course, a Konami line-up wouldn't be complete without an MGS title, and Metal Gear Solid: Rising (360, PS3, PC) looked incredible. Set between the second and fourth games, it stars Raiden, and combines stealth gameplay with samurai-style dismemberment to stunning effect. Due for release in 2011, it's certain to be one of the biggest titles of the year.
ELSEWHERE AT E3 Other highlights to look out for in the coming months were Square Enix’s lineup including Deus Ex Human Revolution, Final Fantasy XIV, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, and Kingdom Hearts: Birth. Codemasters also took the opportunity to show off key 2011 shooter release Bodycount to the press behind closed doors, promising to "combine Lady Gaga with JJ Abrams" if you can imagine that!

25OF YEARS MARIO
GAMESFoCUS
The first instalment of the Super Mario series arrives in the form of Super Mario Bros on the NES. It would go on to sell over 40 million copies worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling videogames of all time.
Just when nobody thought that 2D Mario could get any better, Super Mario World is released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and blows the platforming genre out of the water. Yoshi, another of the most recognisable Mario characters, was introduced to the world. It sold 20 million copies.
One of the first games for Nintendo's new Game Boy handheld system is Super Mario Land, a monochrome 2D platformer.
1985 1988 1989 1990 Super Mario Bros 2 was a quirky take on the Mario Bros formula, tasking players with chucking turnips at enemies and letting them play as Peach and Luigi, who would become almost as recognisable as Mario himself.
22
1991
Super Mario Bros 3, widely considered one of the best 2D games ever made, arrives on the NES. It features an overworld map and transformation costumes that let Mario become a flying racoon.
Mario and friends star in Super Mario Kart on the SNES, the first of many Mario racing games. The Mario Kart series has since seen success on every Nintendo platform released since, the most recent being Mario Kart Wii, which has so far sold over 22 million.
1992 1993 Super Mario Land 2 continued the Mario series on the Game Boy.
Mario began his expansion into other genres, starring in sports titles from Mario Golf to Baseball to Tennis and Soccer, in addition to his kart-racing escapades. Mario Party, a multiplayer board game, also sees its debut.
1996 1997-2002
Super Mario 64, a Nintendo 64 launch game, was the title to truly bring videogames into 3D, offering a vibrant, living and fully navigable world packed with challenges and distractions. It applied all of the series' iconic features – coins, goombas, 1-Up mushrooms and more – in a new, mindbogglingly innovative fashion and became the template for every 3D platformer of the late 90s and beyond.
Something for everyone Over the next few months Nintendo will be promoting 25 years of Mario with a nostalgia-focused campaign, taking over a number of large family events and locations. Creating a Mario experience that can excite the nation, Nintendo will also be running TV, radio and magazine campaigns to promote how Mario appeals to people of all ages from 5-95 with their extensive range of titles. Culminating with Super Mario Galaxy 2, the greatest Mario game ever made, the campaign will feature a number of titles including:
Wii Mario Party 8
Mario Kart
New Super Mario Bros on the Nintendo DS was a reboot for the series, combining the graphics of a 3D Mario with the mechanics of the series' earlier 2D games to create an old-school sidescrolling platformer with a modern twist.
New Super Mario Bros Wii was the first ever Mario game to let more than two people play together at once, bringing the same mix of 2D gameplay and 3D graphics to a wider audience. A raucously entertaining co-operative and competitive spectacle, it proved on last year's biggest Wii hits and continues to sell steadily.

The more perps you kill, the more damage you can deal at greater range, eventually allowing you to throw vehicles like toys and headshot foes from insane distance. The more you bound building-tobuilding gathering orbs, the more you enhance your jumping prowess (including the new 'dash' manoeuvre).

Dance on Broadway lets you experience the magic of Broadway in your very own living room, and lets you become the real star of your favourite musicals. You can play and dance along to 20 of the best songs from all the top Broadway and West End shows, from Hairspray to Fame, Hair to Rocky Horror Picture Show. Our target audience for this title is definitely the kids and families who really love musicals and enjoy dancing. There is a real range of songs from classics to the most modern such as All That Jazz , You Can’t Stop the Beat, Time Warp and many more, which we are hoping will really appeal to both the young and old and get everyone on their feet dancing and performing together. Musicals have always been an extremely popular form of entertainment and by bringing together this much loved genre with a great dance format I’m sure people will be up out of their seats and dancing. How are you going about raising awareness? We are kicking off our marketing campaign with TV support from launch running for 5 weeks through until the summer holidays. We will be supporting this with a shopping centre tour that will be visiting Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds, Birmingham and London for 5 weekends from launch. Here we will be showcasing the game for people to join in and play and will be creating a bit of theatrical spectacle around the game with fancy dress and face painting to interact with – so that consumers can really feel like they are a part of the show. We are also running a great competition that we are hosting with a key media partner whereby entrants can win the chance to have Jennifer Ellison (of Chicago fame) choreograph their very own dance routine on the West End stage.

Mafia II excitement is building towards the forthcoming release of the t he long-awaited Mafia 2 from 2K Games' Czech Studio. With an August 27th release date now firmly nailed down, 2K has finally begun to unveil what looks like a sure-fire blockbuster release. Here, the developers behind the game give us valuable insight into why their game is one of this year's most exciting action blockbusters.
ON...CINEMATIC STORYTELLING PUBLISHER 2K Games FORMAT Xbox 360 / PS3 / PC RELEASE DATE 27th August 2010 SRP £49.99 (Xbox 360/PS3) £39.99 (PC)
ON...THE COVER SYSTEM AND DESTRUCTIBILITY "We spent a lot of time and effort on the cover system, because the player will spend a lot of time using it - but you have to be careful because the cover can often be easily destroyed. So if you're hiding behind a fence and it starts to disintegrate, it's time to move elsewhere. Michal Janacek, Game Team Leader.
"The thing that's really important to us is this cinematic storytelling that the guys here at 2K Czech can achieve. We're really proud of it, and have invested time and effort into making sure it's perfect." Denby Grace, Senior Producer. "We want to present the whole game in a Hollywood film-like style, and visually it looks amazing, but it's the story that's the most important thing for us." Tomáš Hřebícek, Cinematics director.
"We wanted to chart [Vito's] rise through the rank of the Mafia. The life of a mobster isn't as great as it's made out to be. It's not all glamourous and has some really bad things, and we really explore that during the story. I think it's really interesting and that people are really going to enjoy it." "The story is incredible, the dialogue is amazing!" Jack Scalici, Director of Creative Production
LIMITED EDITION TBC
"This destructibility was a big thing for us. We wanted to fill the whole city with a massive number of destructible objects, so that the player felt that they could pretty much destroy anything." Jan Kratochvil, Senior Coder
ON...THE KEY CHARACTERS REASONS TO STOCK • Guaranteed best-seller • Huge marketing campaign promised • Leading multiplayer experience • Mass market entertainment product • Great offline single player gaming
ON...INTENSE AND DEADLY COMBAT "We really wanted [Mafia II's combat] to feel deadly. What we didn't want is the player sort of rushing enemies and doing things like that. You can only take two or three shots before you die. If someone shoots you, the first instinct is to get behind some cover. It really feeds in to that intense feeling that we really want from the gun combat experience." Denby Grace, Senior Producer.
"Like every classic mob story, Mafia II is a story about friendship, betrayal; the guys who you think are the bad guys might not be the bad guys, your best friend might be the bad guy. [Vito] is a nice guy, he has strong morals, he doesn't kill people because he wants to, he kills because he has to. He just wants to get a bit of money, a bit of respect and a bit of power, he doesn't aspire to being the don."
"[Vito's best friend] Joe is a shoot first ask questions later kind of guy [who] comes up
with the schemes and Vito makes sure they don't get arrested or killed. Joe makes some pretty dumb decisions throughout the story, and Vito is left to deal with that and get Joe out of these scrapes." Denby Grace, Senior Producer and Jack Scalici: Director of Creative Production "Our goal was to build the relationship in such a way that it was clear to us or the player that Joe is his best friend - something like family, if not something more." Tomáš Hřebícek, Cinematics director.

New to us
Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days Eidos’ forthcoming new release Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days now available to pre-order from Gem second instalment in IO Interactive's critically acclaimed t heseries, Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days follows two of gaming's
most disturbed anti-heroes as they carve a path through the underworld of Shanghai. The game employs a unique visual style and the unparalleled brutality of the criminal world to set itself apart from other third-person shooters. PUBLISHER Square Enix FORMAT Xbox 360 / PS3 / PC RELEASE DATE 27th August SRP £49.99 (Xbox 360 / PS3) £34.99 (PC)
Dog Days stars Kane, an ex-mercenary with a raft of grudges, and Lynch, an unpredictable, self-medicating psychopath. The singleplayer campaign focusses on Lynch's story, beginning with a massive arms deal. Kane is drafted in to help, and things quickly get out of control, kicking off with frenetic gunfights in crowded streets and restaurants. Innovative gameplay mechanics like human shields – where players can take enemies or bystanders hostage to protect themselves from fire – and an intuitive cover system improve the original Kane and Lynch's gameplay. It takes visual inspiration both from the grimier side of real-life Shanghai and from documentary filmmakers. Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days uses film grain and shaky-cam effects to really immerse the player in its world, offering greater realism and more intensity for players. The unscripted, ad-hoc style of the action recalls the spontaneous user-generated filmmaking of camera phones and Youtube, giving it a more distinctive look than other games in its genre. The neon signs and filthy streets of underworld Shanghai, with its contrast of old and new architecture and lively atmosphere, present a unique backdrop for the action. The game's innovative online multiplayer pits players against each other in three exciting modes that carry the same themes of greed
REASONS TO STOCK • Cinematic ambition and adult themes • Big improvement over the 2007 original • Superb multiplayer modes

and betrayal as the intense single-player campaign. The eight player Fragile Alliance involves working together to try and pull off a daring heist, but each player knows that their teammates can turn traitor at any time and make off with a greater share of the cash. When killed, betrayed players are respawned as cops, allowing them to exact sweet revenge and stop the heist. In a further twist, Undercover Cop plays out the same way as Fragile Alliance with one small change - one of the criminals is cast as a double-agent tasked with stopping the heist, further upping the excitement. Cops & Robbers mode, meanwhile, sees six players on the side of the law, and the other six playing as law enforcers, either trying to stop the heist or get away with the swag. To help gamers get used to the superb online mode, IO has come up with 'Arcade mode', where they can enjoy all the online maps against computer-controlled opponents before they're ready to face the online masses. The campaign, too, can be played co-operatively with a friend either on- or offline, making Kane and Lynch 2 a lasting proposition.
