on Xbox, Fable III will launch later in 2011, as well as the hotly anticipated PC-exclusive Age Of Empires Online - the first new title in the series since 2005. Developed by Robot Entertainment, the game will be free-to-play, with premium content. Details remains scant at this stage, but it will be a hugely ambitious blend of real-time strategy and massively multiplayer online gaming, with persistent cities. The ancient greeks have been confirmed as one of the civilisations in the game.

Microsoft at CES 2011 It was another big International Consumer Electronics Show for Microsoft last month, as the company spoke about 2010 being its "biggest year ever", as well as its plans for 2011. Kristan Reed looks at the company's key headlines from the event...
KINECT SELLS 8 MILLION Microsoft's Xbox PR chief David Dennis took the CES stage to reveal that the groundbreaking Kinect sensor had sold an incredible eight million in the first 60 days on sale - beating the company's own five million sales targets by an impressive margin. "Kinect is a prime example of how natural user interface is transforming gaming by making it more social and approachable than anyone ever thought was possible, but it’s just the beginning," Dennis said. As well as securing stellar Kinect sales, the company also revealed it has added a further 10 million Xbox Live subscribers in the past year alone - or one new member every two seconds, taking the worldwide total to a stunning 30 million active members. A further 11 million Xbox 360 consoles sold in 2010, taking the total to 50 million worldwide.
ON-DEMAND TV SERVICE 'HULU PLUS' TO LAUNCH Microsoft revealed how it will take Kinect’s controller-free experience beyond gaming
and into entertainment throughout the year. From this Spring, US Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers will be able to use Kinect to control an on-demand TV show subscription service known as 'Hulu Plus' on Xbox LIVE. Viewers will be able to pause, rewind, and fast-forward streaming movies with only their voice or gestures. Plans for the rest of the world have yet to be confirmed currently.
Microsoft's ambitious push into the mobile gaming market was in evidence at CES 2011, with the firm using the show as a platform to show off several new high profile gaming releases including Fable III, Coin Golf and Pro Evolution Soccer. On top of that, titles like Full House Poker, Hard Corps Uprising were shown off, as well as Game Room, the WP7 version of the popular retro gaming service launched on Xbox 360 last year. “We’ve found that in a sea of apps, gadgets, and gizmos, the hardest part can often be finding the games you want to play,” said Microsoft's PR manager Letty Cherry. “With Windows Phone 7, we’ve taken a fundamentally different approach, delivering a managed portfolio of high quality games from the best minds in game development, whether it’s an AAA publisher on the console or a great independent studio looking to break into the mobile space.”
AVATAR KINECT BRINGS NEW SOCIAL EXPERIENCES TO XBOX Building on the huge success of the Kinect sensor, Microsoft plans to bring a player's Xbox Avatar to life with a new social experience it is calling 'Avatar Kinect'. By using Kinect's facial recognition technology, it will allow a user to control their avatar’s movements and expressions with their own face. For example, when they smile, frown, nod and speak, their avatar will do the same, Microsoft revealed. To add to the fun, Avatar Kinect also allows players to invite up to seven of their friends into one of 15 different virtual environments, including a performance stage where friends can perform to their friends and share the results online.

More than a decade on from the peak of Pokémania, Game Freak's ever-popular role-playing game is back - and it's bigger, better and more varied than ever. Said to "redefine" the popular series, this fifth generation Pokémon title is designed for both the seasoned veteran and the enthusiastic newcomer, with an engrossing new adventure set to challenge and immerse everyone. For the first time in the series' 15-year history, each version of the game will have its own unique areas to discover and explore, while another series first will see the seasons changing in the game world. It's a feature that promises to add a whole new dimension to the gameplay, with certain species of Pokémon appearing in greater or fewer numbers depending on the time of year, and also sometimes changing their colour and form accordingly. In addition, certain areas will only be accessible during certain seasons. And on top of all that, long-term players will be thrilled to learn that Black & White contains more than 150 neverbefore-seen Pokémon, including the fire breathing Reshiram and the electricityemitting Zekrom. At the start of either game, players have the choice to play as various characters: a new, older boy or girl Trainer, as well as three new starter Pokémon - a Grass-type Pokémon, Snivy, a Fire-type Pokémon, Tepig or, a Water-type Pokémon, Oshawott. Once they've decided, they set off on their adventure with two childhood friends. The ultimate goal of both versions of the game is to complete two awesomely challenging quests; one being to complete the Unova Pokédex by - you guessed it catching every Pokémon in the region, but, as ever, players will need to trade Pokémon between both versions to get 'em all. The second quest is to become the Pokémon League Champion, which involves battling wild Pokémon as well as other Trainers. Thanks to the DS's wireless connectivity, players will be able to sharpen up their fighting skills via the Random
Matchup mode. All told, it promises to be the most challenging, and, ultimately, satisfying Pokémon title yet and another must stock Nintendo title, too. On its Japanese release in September last year, Pokémon Black & White became only the 15th title to receive top marks in the prestigious Famitsu magazine. Some 15 years on from the release of Duke Nukem 3D, it's finally time to "come get some" again, as the longest wait in videogame history comes to a very welcome conclusion. As ever, the cigar-chomping, shade-wearing action hero is back to save the world from a deadly alien menace, rescue some babes, kick ass and presumably chew some bubble gum along the way. The 'King of All Shooters' returns to active duty with over-the-top weapons, gigantic aliens and unprecedented levels of interactivity. Putting the pedal to the metal, and his tongue firmly in his cheek, Duke's latest adventure is a first person shooter quite unlike the serious military blasters or sci-fi epics that trouble the top-end of the charts.

Duke's world is a place where the muscle-bound, flat-topped hero doesn't just blast alien scum in the face, but takes time out to shoot some hoops, lift weights, read porno mags, draw crude messages on whiteboards and ogle any beautiful babes in the vicinity. In a game where drop-kicking an alien's eyeball through a field goal, or flinging poop at your enemy is considered fair game, political correctness is definitely not on the agenda.
Continually brash, loud-mouthed fun is certainly part of the plan, though, and Duke Nukem Forever promises to be an explosive action classic, where kicking arse and taking names is just the beginning.

Back from the dead After 12 years in development, the fate of Duke Nukem Forever looked grim when developer 3D Realms imploded. After laying off most of its staff, and becoming involved in a legal wrangle with Take-Two, few would have bet that the game would emerge from the wreckage. But that's exactly what happened after nine ex-3D Realms members got together with Borderlands developer Gearbox to finally finish off what they'd started. Almost 14 years after work commenced on the project, and after endless false starts, the biggest piece of vapourware in history is finally coming out - and it's looking good. As 2K president Christoph Hartmann says: "All great things take time... a lot of time!"
Always bet on Duke: What the press are saying about Duke Nukem Forever This game isn't trying to rewrite the first-person shooter rulebook. Instead, it's hearkening back to a simpler time, when story was just an excuse for guns, girls and gags Eurogamer Pretty darn fun for a game with such a tumultuous development. The comic timing was impressive, the guns felt satisfying, and the graphics were quite pleasing to look at. IGN Duke Nukem Forever doesn't want to be Call of Duty or Halo; it wants to chuck loads of enemies at you and then let you blow them away in an entertaining manner, with plenty of jokes thrown in for good measure.
