the Counselors’ Newsletter
Director’s letter In her song “Do Life Big,” Jamie Grace sings, I wanna do life big, I wanna serve like you. Lay down my life like you. Oh, I wanna do life big. I believe that the GEMS ministry has been given a vision of going big! And the more I think about this song, God reminds me that He is not limited by human challenges. He overcomes any obstacle and through Him we can reach girls everywhere. God wants to use GEMS Girls’ Clubs to reach women and girls right next door and around the world. But how?
Inside: 2016 Executive board nominees | 3 relationships and training | 4 new awareness level curriculum | 7
Barb Vredevoogd, who started GEMS at her kitchen table, is a great example of how God works. GEMS started with one Spirit-led woman who, in 1958, stepped out in faith to create a girls’ club focused on building Christ-centered relationships. We serve a big God who can do anything! And all it takes is one woman, one lesson, one invitation, one girl, and one prayer at a time. All it takes is you! God has called us all to believe, obey, study, and just plain go big because we know He is using GEMS to fulfill His purposes! Our prayer is to see women and girls grow big in their relationships with Jesus. So big, in fact, that
they are exploding with love and want to share this relationship with everyone they meet. And as the new GEMS season approaches, we are excited about new curriculum updates, a new website, and all the new tools we are working on to help you better build relationships with your girls. Check the online calendar for your local fall workshop dates, too. These workshops are a great opportunity to encourage each other in the sisterhood of Christ and get your GEMS season started with clear direction and passion. It is the perfect time to seek God’s big vision for you within the GEMS ministry! Remember the words from Jamie Grace: I wanna do life big. God will show you that all He needs is one obedient step at a time! God wants to use the gifts He gave you. That is why He called you! You are so important to this ministry. Thank you for going and believing big!

President’s Letter Dear Sisters, What comes to mind when you hear the word summertime? Maybe it’s vacation, relaxing, a slower pace, visiting the beach, or GEMS Leadership Conference. Your response could be one of those things or something completely different, but, for most of us, summer is a time when our schedules change. Most kids are not in school, GEMS clubs are taking a break, and often schedules are not quite so packed. With a more flexible schedule, we might finally get to those things like prayer or Bible study that are always part of our to do list. How many times have you wished you had more time for Bible study or prayer?
As summer moves into fall, local workshops are also a great way to be inspired and equipped for the ministry opportunities God provides. Check the website for a schedule of local fall workshops that will be held in your area.
Summer is a great opportunity to dig deeper into God’s Word and rejuvenate our hearts to be ready to teach our girls when GEMS starts up again in the fall. Our 2015/16 theme, Choose Truth, encourages us to dig deep into God’s Word. Quality time in His Word will not only prepare our hearts, it will give us time to model what we teach.
Blessings,
Our theme verse for next year is, Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path (Psalm 119:105). Let’s not only spend our summer but the rest of our lives getting to know His Word more deeply.

2016 Board nominees The women who serve on the GEMS Executive Board play a vital role in leading the overall ministry. Each year, counselors elect new members to the GEB who help shape the future of GEMS. There are three openings on the board for 2016. Every club will receive a ballot (mailed to Club Coordinators in August), and should cast a vote for three of the nominees. Please read the following qualifications and, as a club, prayerfully consider your choices.
Amy Brooks attends Midland Park Christian Reformed Church in Midland Park, New Jersey. She was a GEM (Calvinette) as a young girl and returned as a counselor 20 years ago. For 16 of the past 20 years she’s served as a counselor for each level and has been a Club Coordinator for ten years. In 2001 she served as an Area Coordinator and for the past five years she’s served as Leadership Trainer for her area. Amy has also volunteered at Get Connected! Camp and is serving on the 2015 Local Conference Committee. Why would you like to serve on the GEB? When I look back, I can clearly see God directing me on a path within GEMS. I’m thankful to have experienced many different roles within the ministry. I am passionate about GEMS work and I’ve seen it positively impact the lives of many girls and women, including my own. I want to serve on the GEMS Executive Board because I feel my experience, passion, and East Coast perspective would be an asset to the next chapter of the GEMS ministry. Linda Hermen attends Momence Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Momence, Illinois. Linda has been involved in GEMS for 34 years as a counselor, Club Coordinator, Local Conference Committee member, area council board member, and on committees hosting area workshops. She is currently serving her second year as an appointee on the board. Why would you like to serve on the GEB? GEMS continues to be a blessing in my life. Although the heart of GEMS will always be in the individual clubs, leadership at the board level is imperative to the continued growth and vision of the ministry. I feel my years of experience at a variety of program levels will benefit the board. As a current board member, I am humbled by this opportunity to serve and feel God’s nudge to submit my name for election. Praising God for the GEMS ministry! Judy Kapteyn attends First Christian Reformed Church in Sarnia, Ontario. Judy has been involved with GEMS for ten years. She started as a Club Coordinator and six years ago her GEMS combined with another local club where she currently serves as Co-Club Coordinator.
Mary Klingenberg attends Hagersville Community Christian Reformed Church in Hagersville, Ontario. Mary was a GEM (Calvinette) and has served as a counselor for 11 years and as a Club Coordinator for six years. She was elected to the GEMS Executive Board three years ago and currently serves as vice-president. Why would you like to serve on the GEB? I see God working powerfully through GEMS women and girls around the world, and I am committed to reaching, loving, and serving with them. As a board member, I have been blessed to pray for and support our executive team, and would like to continue to do so. I remain committed to being attentive and responsive to girls’ needs, and to encouraging, empowering, and networking with the amazing women involved with this ministry. If God wants to use the gifts He’s given me in the areas of vision, leadership, creativity, and planning for what He wants to do with the GEMS ministry, I will serve joyfully!

Lorelle Rozendal is a member of Sunshine Community Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She’s been a counselor at Sunshine for eight years and has also been a Club Coordinator and Area Coordinator for three years. In 2012 she had the opportunity to join a work team and travel to Zambia and help at The Esther School. Why would you like to serve on the GEB? God has affirmed again and again that GEMS is something I’m supposed to do. I loved attending Busy Bees and Calvinettes. I was excited to bring our daughter to her first GEMS meeting, and I fell in love with the ministry all over again when I learned about the call to Zambia. I fully support this ministry and I see it as an honor to have an opportunity to use my gifts to encourage the staff, tell others about GEMS, and be a part of vision and goal setting. Thirty some years ago, Calvinettes introduced me to Micah 6:8, and to this day this verse defines my daily walk and decision-making.

Why would you like to serve on the GEB? I absolutely love GEMS! Being an educator, GEMS
has been an ideal place for me to use the gifts God has given me. I enjoy working with the girls and I am passionate about the vision and mission of GEMS. Having been appointed for two, oneyear terms and currently being the GEB secretary, I have learned so much. Continuing to be part of the GEB would be an incredible opportunity to help further God’s Kingdom so girls everywhere can be part of a living, dynamic relationship with their heavenly Father.

GEMS LEADERSHIP TRAINING
Relationships and Training GEMS LEADERSHIP TRAINING SPRING SEMINAR
You are part of a sisterhood. Between GEMS Leadership Conference, local fall workshops, and weekly or bi-weekly club meetings, you are surrounded by women who love Jesus, care for each other, and want to serve girls to the best of their ability. “What I love about [being part of this ministry] is that we are all in this together,” said counselor and Area Coordinator, Debbie Janke. “We all want our GEMS to have a dynamic relationship with Jesus. And, while life gets busy and life gets messy, [GEMS trainings] are a great place to help build each other up through Christ.” For Debbie, local fall workshops are a place where her mind and heart are prepared for another year of ministering to the girls in her club. She takes away fresh ideas, her passion for club is revitalized, and she creates meaningful relationships. “GEMS trainings allow me to really connect with other women from the area,” Debbie said. “You find out what works, what doesn’t work, and how to tweak something to make it work for your club. I love the learning and sharing that goes on.” As an Area Coordinator, Debbie is part of the GEMS Leadership team. At a training this spring she experienced firsthand how these opportunities create meaningful relationships. “I met a woman named

- Debbie Janke Sandra,” Debbie said. “She is from Illinois and I live in Wisconsin, but she recognized my name as I am originally from her area. We got talking and realized she knew my parents! She said, ‘I have been praying for your mom and have been trying to figure out how to reach out to her.’” Last fall Debbie’s dad was diagnosed with cancer and passed away six weeks later. Debbie had been struggling with how to help her mom because she lives two hours away. And after a short conversation, Debbie learned that Sandra lives around the corner from her mom. After making this connection, Debbie and Sandra chatted for over an hour. “Because of this beautiful sisterhood we have in GEMS, we instantly had a connection. God sent me Sandra. I am so thankful Sandra was [at that training] not only because
of the ways God is going to use her [for GEMS] but because I now have a sister to lean on when I need a helping hand.” GEMS training experiences are packed with brainstorming, worship, and learning, but like all things GEMS they are centered on relationships. “My biggest takeaway from local fall workshops [and other GEMS trainings] is the encouragement that goes on around the tables,” Debbie said. “When you are encouraged it spills over into all areas of your life.” Want to know when and where local fall workshops are happening in your area? Send Me!
Your GEMS have blown us away! In September 2014, we challenged SHINE brightly readers to collect dimes and other change to help us get The Esther School music program off the ground—and they did it! They have collected over $6,500, and they aren’t stopping there. We believe that when young girls are equipped, motivated, and passionately engaged in living out their faith in Jesus they have the potential to be world changers—and
that’s what SHINE brightly wants to help them understand. Which is why the great success with the Dime Drive fires us up about our next challenge. And Sparkle readers are included in the fun this time, too! Starting this fall we are launching The Room to Grow Campaign. Its purpose? To help The Esther School prepare for its growing number of students. Each year an additional classroom is added to the campus. This coming year, the fourth grade
Crafts for service At club, there is a time for Bible lessons, singing, and playing games. And, if we’re honest, craft time might be some of our girls’ favorite part. And as their counselor, you have the opportunity to take their crafting to the next level. That’s what Co-Club Coordinator, Colleen Reinders, did for her club at ClearView Church in Oakville, Ontario. “A big part of the GEMS year tends to be spent on doing crafts either for a badge or just for fun,” Colleen said. “Doing service projects is so good for the girls to put a lot of what they learn at GEMS into
classroom will be built. That means more bricks, bookshelves, pencils, and desks. And we believe SHINE and Sparkle readers can help make it happen.
While the seniors spoke primarily Polish, the joy on their faces was beyond words when they saw the girls and their flowers. “The presence of the Lord was strong, and I believe He went ahead of us and softened hearts. When the girls [came in] carrying the flowers and delivering them with a smile, the people were so touched. Some even had tears in their eyes,” Colleen said. The girls also enjoyed a time of singing with the residents.
their cheerleader, we have no doubt that this campaign will be another success. We will be collecting coins from September until May and will be featuring updates in both SHINE and Sparkle magazines along the way. All change collected, or a check for their value can be sent to: Room to Grow Campaign 1333 Alger St. SE Grand Rapids, MI 49507
Colleen and her fellow counselors have decided this will be a more regular occurrence. They saw first-hand the results of their GEMS service and want to continue to inspire them to bless others. “We believe it really helps girls to go beyond their comfort zone and give, not only a token gift but engage in conversations and bless the Lord through song.” How can your club utilize your time together to bless others? Share your ideas and experiences with us by emailing kelli@gemsgc.org!
If possible, please submit your collections monthly so we can keep our readers updated on their progress in each magazine! Visit gemsgc.org to download a video to inspire your girls to get involved.

Getting your girls involved is simple—but we need your help, too. The Room to Grow Campaign is still focused around collecting change for this cause, so encourage your girls to keep collecting and help them find creative ways to do so. Cheer them on or have a night focused on learning a skill—or completing a badge—that will help them raise funds for this campaign. With you as
practice.” And that was the foundation for Colleen’s club creating paper flowers and delivering them to a local senior living home.
love across borders What goes beyond language, skin color, climate, traditions, and cultural nuances? It’s God’s love! And you have the opportunity to share that with girls around the world. How? By becoming a Sister Club. Clubs that support an international club are able to connect with girls from different cultures and backgrounds. With your support, your Sister Club receives curriculum, uniforms, and other items they need. And those who have been part of a Sister Club can attest to the positive impact it has on their counselor and girls.
witnessing your support Each morning, The Esther School, a Christian school in Chongwe, Zambia, buzzes with the giggles and chatter of students. And each day the faculty and staff witness the ways God is using this school to bless the entire village. Dana Krol, the Communication and Sponsorship Coordinator at the school, is one of those witnesses. She has seen the impact each teacher has on her students. She sees the ways letters, student sponsorships, fundraising, and other means of support are deepening the impact of The Esther School. As part of her role, Dana has the opportunity to share students’ stories. One of those students is Daine. Daine loves chapel. He loves sharing the Bible stories he learns with his brothers, sisters, and friends in his village. In fact, one day his mother accompanied him to school with one request—that his teacher might buy him a Bible so he could continue to share these stories with their village.

Another student Dana knows well is Rita. Rita is in first grade. After learning some
reading basics, something clicked and Rita hasn’t stopped since. She reads books, labels, and the phrases on her friend’s t-shirts—whatever she sees, she reads. “After school, Rita takes out the one book she has: a children’s Bible,” Dana said. “She reads to her fifth grade sister who attends the local school. Already, Rita’s English surpasses her sister’s, but every day, Rita teaches her the English she learned at school.” These two students are a small testimony to the work that is being done at The Esther School. It’s with your help students continue to grow and learn. Still In Need The Esther School hasn’t stopped growing! Please continue to pray for the resources needed to build the staff housing and additional classrooms. We are also still in need of an elementary teacher and an Operations and Finance Director. If you know someone who might be a great fit for either position, please email jill@gemsgc.org.
We currently have clubs in places like Australia, China, Zambia, Kenya, Spain, and the Bahamas—but we don’t plan to stop there. We plan to stop when every girl is reached—when every girl has a chance to see and experience God’s love. And that’s why we need partners— like you and your club—to join us. When you become a Sister Club, you not only have the satisfaction of helping GEMS expand everywhere but you are encouraging your girls to see what sharing God’s love looks like. You help your GEMS see that the girls who attend clubs in China and Kenya and Spain are just like them and that you are part of a sisterhood that is bonded by God’s limitless, borderless love. To find out more or to sign up today, email jill@gemsgc.org or call (616) 241-5616 ext. 3054.
Growing the awareness level We strive to give you what you need to inspire your girls to have a living, dynamic relationship with Jesus. So when you let us know what’s working and what’s not—we listen! Based on your feedback, we are happy to introduce three new curriculums this season.

Focused on 12 of Jesus’ parables, each lesson explores what His stories tell us about who God is and how we can respond. With all of the relevant Counselor Helps, you will have fun teaching your girls to uncover the heart of Jesus’ stories. Activities are designed to require few supplies, and your girls will love reading the letters from Sarah, a girl their own age, as she hears Jesus tell each parable and then relates it in her own words.

Our first addition is to the Kingdom Girl line of curriculum. Suitable for all clubs, Kingdom Girl was created specifically for those that have girls with a diverse knowledge of Scripture. This curriculum draws girls in no matter their exposure to ideas of God and faith and is great for clubs with a wide variety of girls. Adding to the Discovery Level option is the new Awareness Level (grades 1-3) book titled, The Stories of Jesus.

ACTIVITY BOOK
We’ve kept all of the great background information, additional activity ideas, openers, prayer prompts, and stories, but we’ve made some important changes. In place of a rebus story, each lesson in the girls’ Activity Book now includes three activities for you to work through as a small group. These activities—titled Get It, Connect It, and Live It—include everything from story maps to reader’s theaters and quizzes. Through each activity, your youngest GEMS will have more opportunities to interact and engage as they soak in God’s truths. {5}
In addition, each lesson has a mini storybook with an age-appropriate retelling of the story that girls can punch out, color, and take home.

a new take on the sewing badge The purpose of badge work is to help girls explore their God-given talents, gifts, and interests while developing a broader, more relevant view of the world. With that in mind, Club Coordinator, Lorelle Rozendal, saw an opportunity for her GEMS at Sunshine Community Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan to complete their sewing badge by partnering with a fellow ministry in their church. They came together to sew pillowcase dresses for Hope Ministries Uganda—an organization that supports a children’s home, primary school, and church in Uganda.
Girls listened to instructions and used sewing machines to complete their pillowcase dresses. “Seamstresses were helping girls; leaders were helping girls; girls were helping girls—and even some girls were helping leaders!” Lorelle said. “It was a special afternoon of sewing and learning around the table.” about for a while! But after a few emails, Facebook messages, and phone calls, Lorelle scheduled their sewing night. “Armed with very little sewing knowledge, I gathered sewing machines, found extra helpers, and let the girls know we would finally be doing our sewing badge at the next meeting,” Lorelle said. The volunteers from the sewing ministry were extremely helpful. They set up the room, made sure there were enough extension cords,
At the end of their time together, each girl completed a pillowcase dress and some took pillowcases home to make another dress. When all the dresses were complete, they were bundled up for the next volunteer group to take to Uganda. Through this experience, girls learned a new skill but also were able to understand that their work can impact others. As you plan for the upcoming season, is there anyone in your community or congregation who has a skill they can share?
Spring 2015 | 7
But this wasn’t a last minute decision— Lorelle incorporated this idea beginning with their theme night at the start of the season. “For our theme night service project all the girls and some of their moms decorated pillowcases— knowing that eventually the older girls would turn the cases into dresses,” Lorelle said. Once the pillowcases dried they were put away and, Lorelle admits, forgotten
