This large corner site consisted of an architecturally elaborate two-story building underbuilt by 50,000 square feet. The proposed solution was to retain the perimeter wall and footings, preserve and restore the street facades. This eliminated structural work adjacent to the subway tunnels. A new, deeper cellar and foundation were excavated behind the street walls to support an eleven story steel building, utilizing the full development rights to achieve 180 rooms. The metal panel faรงade of the upper building contrasts with the older base, but incorporates its window and awning motifs.

The typical 50 foot wide site posed a challenge in differentiating this development from other new, similarly sited buildings. A curved front, clad in round metallic luminescent glass tiles, and the full height glass window wall with asymmetric canted glass balconies provide not only a unique presence on the street, but dynamic living spaces for condominium residents. Similarly the very thin pouredin-place concrete floors and exposed round columns maximize ceiling height and the open plan.

A 11 story, 60,000 square foot building sits on a trapezoidal site precisely at the intersection of major subway lines below ground. Complex foundations and an unusual footprint configuration obtained the necessary approvals to build adjacent to major public mass transit infrastructure. The base includes retail and a two level indoor garage. The metal panel faรงade and balconies distinguish this from an uninspiring context, while the massing angles the building toward spectacular skyline views.

This triangular lot was actually so small that new development was prohibited, but through a complicated process, approval was obtained to enlarge an existing laundromat to ten stories for residential use and the full floor area allowed by zoning. The core was set against the inner wall, with one unit per floor in the base and duplexes comprising two full floors in the tower of the setback upper floors.

Located in the center of Chelsea’s Flower District, The Cambria Hotel & Suites New York - Chelsea is an upscale boutique style hotel with 134 rooms just blocks away from Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, Empire State Building and Times Square. A loft-like lobby that is as sophisticated as it is welcoming. The reception, loungebar and dining areas flow easily into one another, the open space interrupted only by carefully placed groupings of contemporary, custom-upholstered couches and sectional pieces and streamlined lounge chairs.

CAMBRIA SUITES NEW YORK

Enhancing the loft-like ambiance and recalling Chelsea’s manufacturing past are contrasting areas of concrete and raw-wood planked flooring, concrete wall finishes and burnished concrete floors, fragmented mirror mosaics and bronzetinted glass. The striking yet unobtrusive overhead light fixtures are reminiscent of, but more elegant than, the kind of industrial lighting that might have once been found in Chelsea factories. Contrasting nicely with the lobby’s warm tones are the jewel-like colors of the arresting oversize floral wall hangings, handmade by a local artist using a needlepunch process. The images of giant flowers in full bloom, replicated in the photo collages that line the hallways and the framed artwork in the suites, erupt with intense, bold color, reminding guests of the surrounding Chelsea Flower District. Friendly, modern hotel in Midtown Manhattan, NY; minutes from fantastic shopping, dining and entertainment. Near NYC attractions including Radio City Music Hall, Times Square, the Chrysler Building and the Theater District. From the beginning we focused on bringing some “garden” elements into the property – a big proponent of the project grow concept which was being rolled out a few years ago. There is a certain balance we tried to achieve- to create a warm, business casual environment, which still felt at home in an urban setting. In the lobby we brought in materials – limestone mosaic on either sides of the lobby (wall finish behind the reception desk and the fireplace accent wall). Deep green glass sits in front of the limestone mosaic wall. Classic HGI graphics holds ground behind the walnut reception desk, a limestone counter, matching the mosaic limestone behind.

Large walnut clad wood columns are anchored with a blackened steel base. On the longest wall of the lobby, housing the (2) elevators, we created overscaled walnut door frames to accentuate the height of the lobby. Between the powerful frames, the wall is fully upholstered with Xorel wall panels, with an organic embroidered detailing to add further interest.

This hotel is the Manhattan debut of the Marriott Select Service brand. The hotel’s layout is functional while retaining the separation of spaces in the suite which is a SpringHill Suites hallmark. Its metal panel façade includes green elements and pop-out features. The unique meeting room, with wood flooring seamlessly flowing up the wall and across the ceiling, becomes the main design element. Offset planks protrude in an undulating fashion across the wall, incorporating pops of greenery to hint at the natural elements in the lobby. Extending from the garden pockets, inset strips of blackened metal run across the ceiling and drop over the meeting room table, sprinkling a like rain, handblown glass pendant lights.

The Crowne Plaza at JFK Airport is a full-service hotel with glass faรงades providing great window views of all of Queens. Given that the property sits just a 1/4 mile from one of the busiest air terminals in the world, we wanted to incorporate this context into different areas of the Hotel. The key was to give visitors a sense of what it would be like to view the area from the sky. Looking at NASA flight maps over the Airport, we explored the geometries and layers of patterns created by planes departing and arriving throughout the day. A large part of our design process had a relationship with how we go about our lives, connecting and converging with others, as we create our own flight paths and hubs of activity. We used the concept imagery of the flight paths over the headboard as a powerful accent in the room. Rich tones of red and deep grey are offset from the reflective linear elements. This theme is then reinterpreted in clean, sharp environment lines, the carpet extending beyond the edges of the room, as if connecting you to the world around you. The guestroom was designed to appeal to a business traveler aesthetic, yet with the challenge to create something exciting and youthful to reflect its urban surroundings.
