SATURDAY, APRIL 4, 2020 / 12:00 PM EDT Bluegrass Stockyards Regional Marketplace / Lexington, KY Simmental & SimAngus Bulls, Breds, Show Heifers & Genetic Opportunities!
e f i L o t e r o M THERE IS
THAN RAISING CATTLE.
This statement rings true now more than ever. There are new changes and challenges in our world, but with that also brings new opportunities. As we move forward together with our family, friends and fellow cattlemen and cattlewomen into these unprecedented times, the one thing we can do is remain positive and keep working toward our goals. First and foremost, we could not be more excited about the offering that we as a group have put together. We believe this is the most complete offering we have ever assembled. From the standpoint of phenotype, pedigree and genotype, these cattle are exceptional. We know that reliable quality genetics will increase your profitability, as our ads have said. The cattle in this book will provide that! Our group has more than 100 years in the business collectively. We have had more than 40 production sales together as the Belles and Bulls of the Bluegrass Group. Doing the two sales on one day is something we have been contemplating for some time, and we think it provides our buyers an opportunity to do some “one stop shopping” from programs that have stood the test of time because of the commitment we have to our buyer’s success. As of the time of this catalog going to press, there is certainly a lot of uncertainty in the world with the Coronavirus making its way around and things being postponed and canceled on a daily basis. However, we will continue onward. The grass is getting green, people have cows to breed and genetic needs to be filled. We have a plan for all scenarios. Plan A is we welcome our friends and customers to join us in Lexington, appreciate this fantastic set of cattle in person and sit in the seats and bid on them as normal! (We hope this is what transpires and unless someone forces us to do otherwise will be the chosen direction.) Plan B, if forced, will be that the sale is done entirely online on DV Auctions, videos will be available. To make sure you are comfortable, as always, we will have a full satisfaction sight-unseen purchase guarantee if you purchase through one of our consignors; DP Sales Management; or our consultants, Dalton Lundy, Ryan Haefner, or Brent Tolle. Either way, the sale will go on! We will be continuing to communicate via Facebook, email, phone, etc. as the uncertain times we are living in become more certain. We hope for good health for you and your family and to see you soon in Lexington. Thanks and enjoy this “best ever” set of cattle we are offering on April 4th! WHAT YOU WILL FIND HERE ARE CATTLE THAT COMBINE CONVENIENCE TRAITS, PHENOTYPE, SCIENCE AND COMMON SENSE!

EPD DEFINITIONS
QUICK REFERENCE TO ASA EPDS AND $ INDEXES Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.
$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through wellconceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.
Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Catalog des i gned by

Backed by a perfect uddered Ironhide daughter that stems back to the same cow family as TJ Main Event. G100 is in the top 15% for CE, WW and API while being in top 10% for TI. So they should calve easy and grow. Genomic Enhanced EPDs, Homozygous Polled and Homozygous Black.

We are pretty partial to our red cattle. Maybe because they always sell well and are pretty good cattle. The two we are selling this year are both Quantum Leap sons and out of strong cow families. If you dig deep in past sale catalogs we talk about the 18 cow families. G18 comes from arguably the best non donor running our pastures. She is the perfect cow 8 years old with a perfect udder, perfect feet, perfect size and perfect build. To sum it up we are absolutely crazy for not flushing her. Maybe this year. Buy this bull with confidence top 5% for CE. Genomic Enhanced EPDs. Homozygous Polled.

We have had great success calving Blackstone calves out and size has been small. F38 started out at 51lb. If we have one we promote as a heifer bull this would be the bull. Top 4% for CE and his build make him a candidate. Baldy and Heifer bull that should get some people excited. Homozygous Black.

One of the youngest bulls we are selling. We wanted to put at least one son of our latest herd bull Epic in the sale. The 2019 crop he only got the tale end of the cows and we have been pleased. Epic was our $15,000 top selling purchase from the Eichacker Simmental sale in 2019. G120 highlights what he can do. Make them phenotypically correct, solid EPDs with a shot more red meat. Don’t discount this bull for age. Take him home use him lightly and watch him become a stud as a 3 year old. Homozygous Black. WAYWARD HILL FARM

Another 1/2 Blood SimAngus by the popular angus bull Cowboy Up. Really stout 18 month old bull cover a lot of cows. He was raised by a first calf heifer. She is doing an excellent job on her second calf as well. Prime example of why hybrid vigor works. Once again let us know when you sell your calves. We think they would perform pretty well.

THE SURVIELLENCE SONS Here is a trio of flush mate brothers out of the legendary Sierra cow. All three of these bulls have been standouts and are the type we like to produce. This was the only mating we made SimAngus with Sierra. We have a flushmate sister in the replacement pen and she won’t be leaving the farm. These bulls will be 1/2 brothers to Alley the 2013 Denver Champion female who sold twice for a value over $80,000. They will also be 1/2 brothers to the $18,000 WHF Limitless owned by Scott Bohrson. Most recently a sister sold for $11,000 in Denver and $19,500 in Tim Schaeffer’s pasture bid off. This is a cow family that has stood the test of time and will continue. We have used multiple sons in our herd as well. We strongly believe in this cow family. The opportunities to buy Sierra genetics will start to slow down our egg supply is getting short. All three are Homozygous Polled.

For what its worth, when we were in the picture pen with 825F, I commented that we have bought a lot of semen out of bulls to AI our cows with that were not nearly as good as this one. He is as complete and smooth as you can make one. Moderate in his frame and really deep and bold sprung. He is a homozygous black, homozygous polled, good numbered, star faced, outcross bull that quite simply put is as good as you will be able to find anywhere in the country this spring. We recommend him highly and believe that the most discriminating buyer should be interested in him. He puts it all together, there are no holes here. SWAIN SELECT SIMMENTAL

Swain Intuition 015X is continuing to prove herself as a high level donor cow who consistently works, 901G is an example of why. Her flush by Broadway produced a set of cattle that are impressive to say the least, both bull and heifer. We have kept three full sibling females in our herd and they look fantastic as cows! The star faced 901G is about as well designed as you can make one from nose to tail. His hip structure and hind leg are ideal and frankly we think this one has a very bright future. Truly a well-designed, beautiful and special bull. Homozygous Polled and Homozygous Black.

The Quantum Leap cattle are consistently good—sound and functional. It’s also hard to find better cattle than a BC Lookout sired SimAngus. When you combine Quantum Leap on the BC Lookout sired female we purchased from Sloup Simmentals as the foundation of one of our best up and coming cow families you have a really functional bull. He is a balanced trait bull that will work on a lot of different cows. This is a thick ended, sound, big, stout bull who is going to grow and develop into a very impressive individual. With his combination of 13.1 on CE, -1.1 on BW and 129.8 for API this guy puts a lot of things together. HEIFER BULL PROSPECT! Thick ended beef bull who is a pound maker! This blaze faced bull by Hooks Black Hawk is bold made and really functional and we like him quite a bit. He is attractive to look at and a load when you view him from behind and down his top. A 3/4 out of a gorgeous blaze faced cow with a perfect udder, we think this one has the ability to work in the most discriminating of programs. Complete multifunctional bull is how to best describe C826F. He is high growth with calving ease and moderate birthweight EPDs and a strong API. When you analyze him in person he is sound structured and square rumped with an easy doing athletic look to him. We think the 3/4 represents a great genetic mix for the commercial producer. Lots of hybrid vigor in these cattle! Fall born and ready for more cows. Homozygous Polled and Double Black.

Interesting, fresh, outcross pedigree in this bull. Phenotypically he is fantastic. Great opportunity! This is a feature bull who we really like! Great numbers on a blaze faced, big bodied, stout hipped and big footed bull who puts it together in a sound and flexible structure. He is outcross to many purebred pedigrees and has the potential to be a herd sire that will produce very marketable progeny. Check him out. He is worth a look. Homozygous Polled and Homozygous Black.

There is more to life than raising cattle. For more than 20 years we had a fall female production sale and a separate spring bull sale. Last year we decided that we could do these together in one day with the expanded space and facility we have available to us with the move to our new home--the AMAZING Bluegrass Stockyards Regional Marketplace. This move is better for you as you can fill all of your genetic needs on one day! Get ready, here it comes, turn the page, and enjoy what we believe to be the best set of genetics, opens, and breds we have ever offered! We can’t wait for the world to appraise them and take them home! What you will find are cattle that combine convenience traits, phenotype, science and common sense!

We bought the original BC Lookout that started this family for us from Nick Sloup and we are sure glad we did! This may be the only opportunity to acquire genetics out of this red favorite of ours. It wasn’t super easy to even convince Angie to sell this flush, to say the least she is her baby! Red cattle are hot and I will say as humbly as I can that I fully believe this is one of the best red females in the breed. Don’t miss this opportunity. Flush her red, black, purebred or percentage. Our fall herd has produced the 2013 Denver Champion female Alley, 2017 Supreme Female at the Iowa State Fair, American Royal and NAILE Champion Purebred, 2018 Fall Calf Champion NAILE, 2019 Reserve Calf Champion NWSS, 2019 Champion and Reserve Fall calf at the Iowa State Fair, American Royal, NAILE, 2019 Reserve Grand Champion American Royal, 2020 Fall calf Champion NWSS, 2020 Champion and Reserve Fall Calf Ft. Worth, 2019-2020 1st Place Show Heifer of the Year and 3rd Place Show Heifer of the Year. Could one of these females live up to those accolades? In the words of the great coach John Calipari “I like my team” that is how we fell about theses five open heifer that will be there sale day. As for the two in this choice lot all we can say is these two are SPECIAL!! They are full sibs to Lot 1, OL’SON and the 2019 Res. Sleeper alert! Gracie has been one we have been partial to since the beginning. Pretty white face and great personality. This in one that will have your kids begging you to take her home. We call her the sleeper because she is skinnier and that is our fault not the heifers. Super sleek necked, long bodied and good structured. Summer calves have been highly thought of and commanded high sale prices. These three daughters and the Lot 1 bull should show you that this is one great producing cow.

Lot 49 If you are looking for a heifer for a first timer that’s easy to handle, then stop on 55G. If you want a heifer that will stand some competition and win some blue ribbons, you can stop on 55G. We are pretty partial to the Wide Range females we have in production as well. Backed by a good Sierra daughter on the dam side. There has been some winners come from that pedigree. Several Donor cows have come from this pedigree as well.
LOT 49
Lot 50 If this heifer doesn’t get you excited, we are not sure what will. After taking this striking picture Godiva has caught the attention on many. We are breeders and we appreciate good cow families behind one. We can trace one back to 1994 to one of Paul’s show heifers. What is in between those years were several donors. We are showing our age in the business and that is a good thing. We will challenge you to find one this impressive on hoof with a 150.8 API. That is hard!

Passion does it again! Her daughter known as Desi around our place had this blaze face cutie. This girl is broke to tie and has a easy go attitude. If you’re looking for one to take home and maybe hit a few 4H shows before breeding to the bull of your choice then Shellie is your girl.

Good fronted, soft structured, show heifer prospect with numbers designed for PTP shows! 907G gets better on a daily basis. She is unique in her design, soft structured, long bodied and moderate framed. She’s going to make a heck of a bred heifer with a halter on her, but what she is going to do beyond that as a cow is where she is really going to shine. A lot of people have already bought show heifers, everyone can always use another one that will be a top end cow prospect, its never too late! Homozygous Black and Homozygous Polled.

Here is a March heifer that would make a perfect junior project. Proof that we have offered our very best here. Star Struck is one of my favorites and is a consistent producer for us and she also showed well. This heifer should follow in her foot steps. Super deep bodied and correct on her feet and legs. She’s show ready with tons of hair.

Lot 54 There is the old saying a picture is worth a thousand words. Do we really need a footnote for this one or let the picture speak for itself? This one is special out of the hottest bull in the Simmental breed. From the hoof up it is all where is need to be and moves how it should. After picture day she went to the showbarn. We wanted to make sure the new owners were not behind if they decide she needs to hit the show road this summer. This is a natural calf out of our 245C donor we own with Lawrence Franzen. If you don’t choose the show road for this one that’s fine too, she can make a donor pen as well. Bred to Innovator for an October calf.
LOT 54
Lot 55 Where do I start here, I’m always partial to anything that goes back to our Passion cow. She just keeps surprising me with her progeny every year. She has produced a 15,000 heifer going to the Collins family and being named calf champion at the 2018 NAILE. Having high selling bulls and now her daughter, being a show champion herself, producing animals like I’m offering here. I chose to breed Kisses to the ever so popular TJSC Hammertime and the calf is sure to be a show stopper. Broke to tie.

For us if you could stamp them out like her one after another it would be just like printing money! She is as good as her picture and is getting even more impressive by the day! 813F is homozygous polled with a baldy face, halter broken and ready to go where ever your imagination can take you. Safe to Hook’s Black Hawk for a homozygous polled and black calf.

Lot 57 Uno Mas on Lock N Load is a mating we have seen here a number of times and one that never disappoints. Uno Mas females as cows are a sight to behold. They just have a look you want your cows to have. Fancy’s dam is a sister to some of our feature bulls in this sale--there is strength in the blood! She’s halter broke, safe in calf and ready to hit the road with you this summer if that’s your “fancy,” or ready to munch on some grass this summer and give you a nice baby when fall arrives. Either way you can’t go wrong. She is homozygous polled and homozygous black and sells safe to Hook’s Black Hawk for a homozygous polled and homozygous black calf.

Great uttered, moderate, and as soft and sound as you can make one. Like her mother, the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree here with this outcross WS Beef King heifer. She has a long feminine front and is straight lined and sound to the ground. There are a lot of heifers in this group that I would like for us to be keeping and this is certainly one of those. She is safe to KLER/RFG Elevation sexed heifer semen to keep the outcross pedigree going with a homozygous polled and black calf. Everything is right here! Homozygous Polled.

DP Sales Management would like to invite you to the Inaugural Combined Belles and Bulls of the Bluegrass Sale (22nd Annual Bull Sale and 44th overall sale from this group) in Lexington, Kentucky on Saturday, April 4th at the Bluegrass Regional Marketplace. The group has made some positive changes for this year’s sale, which will benefit you greatly! They have decided to bring you bulls and females in a “one-stop-shop” sale on the same day. The Belles and Bulls of the Bluegrass group are some of the breeds most committed advocates. In 2020 I think they have raised the bar even higher on the cattle they have put together for your appraisal. The Belles and Bulls of the Bluegrass group are leaders in Kentucky, regionally and nationally and continue to evolve to meet the challenges necessary to supply you the best product available. Their cowherds are continuously improving to enable them to provide you the kind of bulls and females you need, regardless of your focus. The consistency of the quality they deliver year after year is unquestioned. This group is committed to the cattle industry and the Simmental breed for the long haul—proven by this being their 44th sale! This sale is likely the longest continuous Simmental bull sale east of the Mississippi, selling bulls to 28 states and Canada. The cattle are the best set ever offered by this group with a wide range of pedigrees—they are impressive genetics. In visiting with many past Belles and Bulls of the Bluegrass customers, we consistently hear that the genetics from this sale are improving their end-product and bottom line. The cattle are ready to go to grass and make you money. You can rest assured you will find the right cattle for your program here on April 4th. This year’s offering is quite impressive and will be worth checking out. There is no better time to select Simmental genetics. They offer efficiency and can provide high hybrid vigor, which results in pounds, and profit in your cowherd. If you have not used Simmental genetics in the past I encourage you to visit with these consignors and learn more about the advantages of using Simmental or SimAngus genetics. The offering will be ready for viewing on Friday so please stop by anytime. We will be glad to assist you with any of your needs. On behalf of DP Sales Management, we always enjoy promoting Simmental cattle and working with this great group of breeders. If have any questions regarding the sale offering contact the consignors, Dalton Lundy, Ryan Haefner, Brent Tolle, Drew, Holli, or me. Please join us on Friday evening for a great program hosted by Woodford Feed and Multimin. Watch for updates, videos, and the sale order on our website and the consignors Facebook Pages.
