Selling 1/2 Interest
What a way to start off the female division of the 2023 Belles and Bulls of the Bluegrass. This year we are offering 1/2 interest in WHF Delilah 456K. We have been fortunate to raise some elite females over the years. I am willing to say this might be the best female, at this age, that has ever walked the pastures at WHF. The big question is, what can she do in the future to solidify that statement? 456K combines our elite donors Delilah, Summer, Andie and Angels Envy. We believe in stacking cow families and she is stacking the best we have to offer. Everything about this female is elite. The sheer power and mass of this female is impressive. She takes structural correctness to a whole new level. Her disposition is amazing. This one is built as if you took those four donors listed above, along with their best attributes and gave them to 456K. Lot 2 is a full sister. Lot 13 is a 3/4 sister. Please reach out with questions on this elite female about the partnership.
Don’t let this ones big sister 456K, Lot 1, overshadow her. This one is chasing hard on her. She just started in this world a little over a month later. All the same things hold true for this one as her sister. She is massive, powerful and her structure is awesome. Her disposition is great as well. This one is going to be fun to watch! This mating has proven to work with these two females and they have a brother that we are also really high on. Study the whole picture of this family sale day. Double Up bulls, breds and opens are all functional cattle. The Delilah bred progeny are easy to find. Great females start from great foundations.

Stunning red baldies are always fun. They catch the attention of everyone and they are easy to remember. 145K is a sleek necked, big bodied female. She is a maternal sib to our lead donor Delilah. Take note of the fact that these five open heifers have one female in common in their pedigree, and that is Angels Envy and backed by the breed legend Bankroll on the sire side. He has sired countless promotional sires and champion show heifers. This one has a big future showing but maybe a bigger future in the donor pen.
Here is a September prospect that gets better every day. Long sided, long fronted and plenty of shape. All she needs is someone to be patient and let her come together. The Eggersman family did that this past year with a full sib to her sire, Point Proven. Females bred like this one make excellent breds. Study the cow family on this one. She goes back to a full sib to our Andie donor. Two Point Proven heifers at Trennepohl’s averaged $125,000 and semen has sold for an average of $370/unit this year so far. He is solidifying himself as a heifer bull that will add elite phenotype.

To get this picture maybe took 15 seconds. Landon Hall, our photographer, was as excited in the picture pen as I have ever seen him on one. This one gets everyone going with her stunning good looks. Then, they find out that she is a Point Proven out of a full sister to Summer. Phenotype and pedigree - what more could you want in a show heifer prospect? Well, there is more…she has 15 EPDs above breed average and 10 EPDs in the top 35%. If this total package can’t get you excited, I don’t know what will.
We decided to try to continue to diversify the offering of the sale this year by selling a summer born. We truly want the sale to have something for everyone, and we think this is a great way to introduce the summer division of the sale. This June born Hitman baldy is still green, but she has all of the parts and pieces to come along and be quite interesting regardless of what you want to do with her. Sells open.
Striking bald faced heifer out of the Swain Queen 403P line. This one’s blaze faced mother was the Reserve Senior Champion female at the NAILE in 2018 and has produced 4 natural calves in a row that have made the sale for us since. We sampled DMCC Hitman trying something a little different for our program and we have not been disappointed. They are extremely attractive cattle and maintain the kind of functionality and efficiency we demand. Sells open and ready to breed how you want, when you want, for your situation.

I feel like a broken record in my comments, but cow families have always mattered to us and will continue be the foundation for what we do. It frankly gets no better than the Coleman Donna 386 Angus matriarch this one stems from. The mating out of Donna to the cow maker OMF Epic didn’t disappoint. You look at this one and see some pretty unique traits for one with the EPD package she boasts. She is exactly what we are trying to produce. Striking phenotype combined with genotype that makes you scratch your head wondering how it can actually be done. Sells open and ready to breed how you want, when you want, for your situation.

Talk about stacked maternal strength. This one’s mother was the Reserve Senior Champion % female at the NAILE in 2021, then laid down and had 209K a couple of months later. Look a little further and you will find Shawnee Miss 770P, TKCC Victoria 57A and SVF Sheza Star N902 (one of my personal favorites). High quality consistency is bred in and expected here. This is the kind of ultra-complete heifer that is hard to poke holes in, she just continues to get more impressive each day. This is another highly maternal female built on cow power, tracing back to our Mindy line. The more and more we see of the SR Mr Right Now cattle, the more we appreciate them. They consistently combine calving ease, good performance, and a nicely balanced real world cow look. Her near total outcross pedigree also boasts 10 EPD traits in the top 35%. 124J’s maternal sister (Swain Haylee 002H) was a high selling bred last year going to the White family in Oklahoma with another maternal sister working for the Morris Family in Indiana--this one will follow right in their footsteps. Sells open and ready to breed how you want, when you want, for your situation.
Charisma is the natural calf out of our Swain Intuition 015X donor. She proudly presents the easy doing, big footed, maternal build the 015X cattle have long been known for. On the top side of her pedigree, the SS Babies Breath cow has long been one of our favorites descending from our Mindy line and we believe Oracle to be her best son, so we have happily sampled him in our program with good results. There are many examples of success from this predictable cow family and 126J should be no different. Sells open and ready to breed how you want, when you want, for your situation.

We love this heifer. She is one to base a program around and one we want to continue to build our herd around. Her perfect build, perfect structure and awesome pedigree make this one elite - added bonus, she has a 147 API. It’s hard to find one built like this with an API that high. We have sold many full and maternal sibs to this female to some of the most respected programs in the Simmental business and show cattle industry. Values range from $12,000 to $60,000, and some of the ones on the lower side of that have generated lots for their owners. Trennepohls, Walthers, Eggersman, Rosebud, Schaeffer, Boyert, Buck Creek, 3ACES, Mundy, MBK,Fields, 4-W, JWC and Sleichter are families and farms that have invested in siblings to this one. She is currently in our show barn and we are working her towards Junior Nationals in Des Moines. She is bred to Lover Boy for a September calf. Selling 1/2 interest in this elite female.

This is a good place to start our fall bred heifers. Like her full sibs in blood in the sale (Lots 36 and 149) she brings maternal strength and common sense with a family history of quality udders, powerful structure, and longevity. 114J is a bit more striking and extended in her design than her other family members in the sale giving her a bit of a different twist. We had the good fortune of spending the day on horseback in Utah at Yardley’s this past fall and saw the Lover Boy bull that day and bunch of progeny. When we came back, we bought some more semen on him! This one mated up to Lover Boy should be exciting.

Like her sister (lot 20), this daughter of our Hooks Abigail 23A donor is interesting! Her full brother was a high seller into the highly successful Scottie Smith program in Kentucky a couple of years ago. As I project C117J out to a 3 or 4 year old, I suspect I will regret selling her more than once. She boasts an EPD profile with across the board strength with an astounding 13 traits in the top 30%. Combining her calving ease figures with top 25% growth and indexes in the top 25%, is not easy to do on a female who still looks like this one. Her physical build and foot structure is impeccable and I like the fact that she brings it on just a touch more frame size and stretch. This OMF Epic female exemplifies the maternal excellence we have seen this sire group create for us. She is cowy from end-to-end. We sold a sister to her as a popular bred in the 2020 sale and this one has the same kind of powerful look. Big bodied, soft made, and stout is what you can expect in this one. She will get it done, easily, every day. Her genetic profile is strong and balanced across the board and she matches up well both phenotypically and genotypically with the great Lover Boy. That baby should be exciting!

Another maternal gem packed with cow power and dimension. We wish we could keep all of these OMF Epic females and build the herd around them-they are that kind. 121J has an extra dose of muscle and top and is still soft made and smooth. The Hooks Abigail 23A donor has been excellent for us producing numerous high selling bulls and females and from what we have seen so far, we believe the OMF Epic females will be a maternal foundation for our future. Sweet Caroline is structurally flawless, attractive in her design and has a brood cow look. A full sister to the dam of 63J was the 2019-2020 Show Heifer of the Year, and another one was the dam of the high selling bull in the Effling family’s bull sale. No matter the tattoo on the Andie Innovator daughter, they all produce well - just look at Lots 5, 22, 107, 108, 121 and 128. In doing some research, when I pulled up the EPDs on her heifer calf, I found that only thirteen animals in the whole Simmental database have every EPD in the top 45% of the breed. This calf, 63L, has 16 out of 18 EPDs in the top 45%. Talk about a balanced profile on a nice female.

This is a prime example of what we try to do with most of our program - high level phenotype and strong genotype. This is a package that shows that progression. Next generation moving forward with better EPDs, while maintaining phenotype and not chasing extremes. We do sample extremes in phenotype and genotype, but the key word is sample! Slowly building EPD profile of multiple generations. We feel these cattle are consistently better individuals. 036J and her calf are prime examples of that. This is a pair worth looking up, and to get a future reference on this calf, look at the Point Proven progeny selling in Lots 4 and 5. They will read very similar in pedigree to this calf.

Simply put, Jojo is awesome. Big feet, perfect structure, huge middled, thick topped and pretty fancy. This one screams donor cow build. Then, throw in that her mother is twelve years old with monster feet and a good udder. Then, add the Double Up aspect. He is producing some great ones. Probably dumb selling this one, but, oh well, we have feed bills to pay. We believe in repeat business and think this one will bring you back for more. She’s been a crowd favorite of many outsiders and she is a WHF family favorite for sure. We can’t wait to see a donor photo of this one. 35J should calve after the sale to LCDR 198H.

QUICK REFERENCE TO ASA EPDS AND $ INDEXES
Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in:
All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an allpurpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)
Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.
Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.
Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in firstcalving daughters.
Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.
Marbling (MRB): Marbling score.
Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.
Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.
Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.
Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)
Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.
Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.
$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:
All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.
The excitement around Point Proven continues to grow with a couple of his first daughters selling for an average of $125,000. He had a big SimMagic, selling 150 units of sexed semen for an average of $380/unit and 50 units of conventional semen to average $320/ unit. Embryo lots sired by Point Proven averaged $1900/per egg in SimMagic. Study the Lots 4 and 5 daughters and Lot 13, a full sister to him. Also, feel free to come to the farm and study the replacement females sired by him. Maybe more exciting are the bull calves. He is proving to be a heifer bull that will add look, help paperwork and still keep some punch in the bull calves. Selling 50 Units total, in 10 packages of 5 units each.
