Sons of JOSIE 31J
OMF/DK Josie 31J
We thrilled to feature the progeny of OMF/DK Josie 31J. She was our selection as the top female in the Oak Meadow sale a few years ago. Her impeccable phenotype, outcross pedigree, balanced traits and deep red hide made her an easy choice. Josie’s first daughters were some of the highlight females in our female sale. As we share this tremendous set of brothers out of 31J they have simply exceeded our expectations on what this donor can produce. Take some time a study what each of these individuals have to offer. This is just the beginning of the Josie influence.
• Heifer Acceptable • Balanced Trait Sire
• Carcass Quality Sire Stout, rugged, and complete are just a few words that come to mind when we think about this young stud. This calf truly exemplifies what Josie is passing on to her progeny. Take a close look at the data and see how he can enhance your program. This one is sure to make it onto your shortlist.

This herd sire is versatile enough to lead both seedstock and commercial herds. The Josie donor is not only one of our favorites but also passes on the genetics the family is renowned for. Red October has been very well received by cattlemen who’ve dropped by to view him prior to the sale week. L31 is another standout member of the Josie cow family and extended lineage. He offers both performance and power, having weaned off at an impressive 810 pounds—what would he have been worth as an 800-pounder? His progeny will carry the pounds, translating to profit. For seedstock breeders, L31 has the pedigree and structural integrity, with a strong top and overall muscle shape. On paper, L31 ranks in the top 20% or better for 10 EPDs. This Red October son combines calving ease and growth, which should be the goal for breeders, regardless of market position. Take a good look and study this one.
CLRWTR RED OCTOBER M31F
BD. 3/2/24 | ASA#. 4421169 | Purebred Bull Tattoo. M31F | Red | Homo Polled
Red October M31F is a true calving ease bull, with EPDs showing a birth weight of 16, placing him in the top 10%, and a negative birth weight of -2.6. Another important data point to consider is his API, which ranks in the top 4% of the breed and is the highest in the sale. On the top side, he goes back to Imperial.
Specialty Traits
We are pleased to make reading and understanding the EPD information a bit easier . Using the animals’ actual and EPD values, we have broken down the bulls into four specific categories to help you find the right bull for your program. While this is not a 100% guarantee—since mother nature and management also play a large role—we feel confident in these recommendations based on the science and our knowledge of each of these cow families
Heifer Acceptable Sire – This animal should be used when a high percentage of first-calf heifers are being bred.
Terminal Sire – This animal’s daughters should not be kept as replacements. This individual’s offspring should be exceptional feeder cattle that perform well on the rail .
Balanced Trait Sire – This animal should provide moderation for calving ease, growth, and milking ability . Progeny of this animal could be kept for replacements or be acceptable feeder calves .
Carcass Quality Sire – Producers who retain ownership and are paid for carcass merit should place special emphasis on this type of individual. This animal could also fit into other categories, but will produce progeny with above-average carcass traits .

CLRWTR Sugar H4F
It’s no secret we’ve been huge fans of the Sugar C4 cow family, and it’s easy to see why. Not only has she produced exceptional herd sires like Clear Advantage and Game Changer, but she has also left us with some tremendous females. H4F, affectionately known as “Sister,” is the flushmate to Clear Advantage and has proven to be an outstanding producer. Her offspring have consistently impressed, with a daughter by Double Run being a top open in our female sale at $9,000 going to the Lane’s. This set of brothers is a true testament to her ability to work across multiple sires, showcasing the quality and versatility she brings to any breeding program.

M4L is one we’re extremely proud to have wearing our brand. This type of individual makes all the long, hard days worth it. The goggle-eyed red baldy has received more calls, texts, and farm visits than any other in the offering, and it’s easy to see why. He never seems to have an off day and always looks the part. If his phenotype doesn’t impress you, his potential as a calving ease specialist certainly should. We’re excited to see where he ends up and plan to use some semen to breed heifers this fall. With a stacked pedigree, stunning appearance, and being homozygous polled, he’s truly a standout.
M4K offers a smooth pattern and a clean shoulder. He’s flexible in his joints and is sure to develop into a neat-made herd sire. This Red Bird x Vantage Point x Sugar cross combines calving ease with strong weaning weight (WW) and yearling weight (YW). He ranks in the top 15% for CE, WW, YW, and REA. This baldie weaned off well and shows great potential.
We’re pretty selective when it comes to using Angus bulls, but we’ve been more than pleased with our Double Run progeny. L4K is stout, with a big hip, wide rump, and impressive thickness when viewed from behind. This Sim Angus bull is out of the donor, Sugar H4F, a Vantage Point x Sugar cross. He boasts strong stats, ranking in the top 10% for WW and MWW, and the top 15% for YW. Add in a negative birth weight, and he’s a well-rounded performer. Easygoing and laid back, he’ll get the cows excited to produce your special calf crop. Homozygous polled and homozygous black.
No matter the pedigree, EPDs, or family, this bull is sure to attract you as a buyer. This Red Bird calf is an eye-catcher, no doubt. He not only grabs your attention but also combines many positives, including balance, a square, level rump, great rib shape, and an overall impressive design. As many know, Sugar sons and grandsons have gone on to do an excellent job for numerous seedstock producers and continue to excel. We believe this one has all the right parts and a bright future ahead.

If you’re looking for a Sim Angus bull, it’s hard to overlook L25K. No matter his percentage of sire or dam, or color, this is a sale feature. He’s one of Doug’s favorites, and it’s easy to see why. L25K combines nearly all the traits you look for in a herd sire. The first thing that attracts you is his presence, look, and overall design. His muscle mass through the hip, rear, and top is impressive, and his balance ties it all together. His sire, Knockin Boots, was a high seller a couple of years ago at the Ohio Beef Expo. The Angus cow behind him has consistently produced many bulls for several years in the Choice program. No fluke here. Homozygous polled and homozygous black. Two sons sold last year to Evan Crecelius and Scott Weaver.

I’ve really enjoyed this group of fall heifer calves, but I must admit, I’ve been eager to get to the barn each day to see how they’re progressing. Purebred Simmental Percentile Table
Hybrid Simmental Percentile Table
Quick Reference to ASA EPDs and $ Indexes
Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www simmental org Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in:
Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers .
Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight
Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight
Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight .
Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.
Milk (Milk): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk
Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth
Marbling (Marb): Marbling score
Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.
All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an allpurpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)
Additional EPDs not shown in catalog:
Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age
Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat
Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight .
Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.
Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak
Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminalsire scenario. (See below for more details.)
$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle That’s where $ indexes come in Through well- conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield .
Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another . Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another . For example, when buying an all-purposetype sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www .simmental .org .
