CONTENTS / FROM THE EDITOR

FROM THE EDITOR

As I sit down to write this last issue of the season with a -13 degrees outside and an extended forecast with negative numbers, I cant help but find so much respect for the Breeders in the cattle industry!!! The hard work and drive that the producers have when weather like this hits truly amazes me! Just think what it would have been like 50 years ago!!!!!! Sales are still going on, Calves are still being born and Ranchers are still working hard each and everyday despite whats thrown their way. But aren’t you glad the seasons will soon change and just like that it’ll be time for breeding once again, pasture turn out, summer horse back rides to check the pastures, fall weaning, and the cycle continues year after year, with the rancher who just loves to do what they do! Id just like to say Thank You and keep pressing on! Throughout this February issue you will find the upcoming Sales for the Feb/March sale season. The SD highlights from the banquet and sale this past December. A few scholarship opportunities for the Jrs, and events to expect throughout the summer and fall before the Nov. issue comes out. Have a great 2019 and we’ll see ya again in November Folks!

ASA NEWS

BRUNE ELECTED TO AMERICAN SIMMENTAL ASSOCIATION BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Bozeman, MT — J.W. Brune, of Overbrook, Kansas has been elected to the American Simmental Association (ASA) Board of Trustees, and will represent the North Central region. Brune and his wife, Carol Lyon Brune, DVM, are the owners and managers of White Star Cattle Company. They maintain both a spring- and fall-calving herd consisting of purebred to percentage cattle marketed by a variety of means, including private treaty, bull test sales, and breeder group sales. A member of both the Missouri and Kansas Simmental Associations, Brune is also active in numerous other livestock organizations. A veteran of the US Army, he served a tour of

duty in Vietnam and received a Purple Heart for wounds received in combat.

Active for 32 years as a breeder of Simmental genetics, he has spent a total of 55 years breeding registered seedstock, and a previous term on the ASA Board from 2014 to 2016. Experienced in a wide range of aspects of the beef industry, he served as Executive Secretary of the Missouri Simmental Association, published the Simmental Message, was in great demand as a show judge, and has served as a mentor to countless junior members. Brune was formally seated during ASA’s 51st Annual Meeting held January 20, in Denver.

Also seated were newly elected Greg Walthall, Windsor, Missouri; and re-elected Tim Curran, Ione, California, and Clay Lassle, Glendive, Montana. Founded in 1968, the American Simmental Association is headquartered in Bozeman, MT. ASA is committed to leveraging technology, education and collaboration to accelerate genetic profitability for the beef industry. In keeping with its commitment, ASA, along with its partners, formed International Genetic Solutions — the world’s largest genetic evaluation of beef cattle. Published by the American Simmental Association, January 21, 2019.

Each of these programs are designed to offer assistance at three key management moments in commercial operations; Breeding, Heifer Selection, and Weaning. This article will briefly dive into how each program functions. TOTAL HERD ENROLLMENT — COMMERCIAL The THE-CM is the foundation to these programs and allows participants to fully capitalize on the true genetic awareness of their cow herd. This is a whole-herd reporting program that helps isolate the known genetic potential of every female owned. www.simmental.org/commercial COW HERD DNA ROUNDUP

The CHR is an opportunity to push the accelerator on female genetic awareness. Every cattleman knows which cow is his best producer, but do they know right away which replacement heifer will fill that role? The field of genomics allows us to gain a better understanding of a young heifer’s genetic potential even before she starts producing. This technology uses known regions on the bovine genome that impact specific economically relevant traits. For example, longevity in cattle is known once they’ve been in production for almost a generation, but producers would hope to know that information before they invested time and money in replacements. Through genomics, we can use known genetic markers to give an indication of whether a female may last in the herd longer (or shorter)

their bull battery because they know the role genetics play in the end product. They’ve also invested in their management protocols to ensure the feeder calves they raise will stay healthy and perform in the feedlot. These investments help producers stay profitable and build a more valuable feeder calf, but are their buyers aware of their commitment? The FPC is a third-party view of the profit potential on a calf crop through the understanding of genetics, health, and management. Buyers want low-risk, high-potential calves with earning potential. Producers want to highlight that their calves fit potential buyer’s needs. As opposed to traditional marketing slogans and empty statements let’s provide true awareness. We can Know or Guess. Choose Know. Follow this link to learn more about the FPC: www.internationalgeneticsolutions.com

Sight Unseen Buyers Program

We would love for you to join us at the ranch March 2 for the bull sale; but if you cannot, this program has worked very well for busy cattlemen unable to attend our sale. 20% of our bulls go to satisfied cattlemen each year, many repeat customers through our SUS program. It’s simple: give us a call to discuss what you are looking for in MRL 22F MRL 8F your next herd sire. We know our cowherd Sire: Cockburn Assasin 6 Brothers Sell 12 Brothers Sell Sire: U2 Renown very well and the genetics strengths of each and every bull offered. Together we will Representing 45 registered red & black Angus bulls discuss which bulls will work best in your operation. We will personally hand pick MRL Herd Bulls designed by Ranchers for Ranchers! and purchase your bulls for you within and quite often below your price range. Your next herd bull purchase is as close as your phone. Please contact Lee or Dave for more info on the program.
