ANNUAL PRODUCTION SALE / FRIDAY, MARCH 27, 2020 1:00 PM / AT THE RANCH IN BANCROFT, IDAHO

PROFITABLE BALANCED BREEDING, SUPERIOR IN FUNCTION

Welcome to our 10th annual production sale! We appreciate your interest and continued support to our program. We are fully committed to improving our genetics each and every generation for our customers. We aim to help you achieve your breeding goals and to be successful in your endeavors. We practice the art of fine breeding and use intense sire selection, careful line breeding, and innovative corrective matings to achieve this. We strive for “Balanced Breeding Superior in Function”. We utilize the best bulls that we can find to meet the needs of our cowherd. We want our cattle to be functional, productive, and the low maintenance kind with excellent dispositions and longevity. Our cowherd is ran similar to most commercial operations with the exception of single bull breeding pastures and records. We operate on non-irrigated native pastures with only salt and mineral supplementation. The bulls in this offering were fed in a 30 acre pasture with long hay and a mild grain mix. These bulls have not had any silage or hot feed to ensure soundness. They are well grown but not over conditioned like most that sell nationally. The heifers are managed in a similar way but fed only long hay and must travel to water, salt and mineral. We have on offer some of the most unique genetics in the industry. One would be hard pressed to find these woven bloodlines anywhere else. Then add to it the age, environment, and management of our bulls, we are not conventional to say the least. We dare to be different, challenge the fads, and design our cattle to work for you, not you for them. Feel free to contact us about viewing the cattle prior to the sale. Our cattle are affordable and we want you to be happy with your purchase. We can assist in marketing your calves if desired. We truly feel we have a very unique, well designed product, and know that our cattle are hand crafted with attention to detail. We don’t breed for big numbered EPDs or use the bull of the month. Think of it as a small rare find not mass produced in factories. We feed, breed, manage, tag, sort, clip and have our hands on every aspect of our cattle. If any of this finds appeal in your mind, come have lunch, evaluate our cattle and make your own decision as to who you want your seedstock producer to be.

SIMANGUS We have been breeding multi-generational SimAngus cattle for many years. We have found more predictability and functionality in our herd by linebreeding to the genetics which have excelled in our environment. We love the performance, mothering ability and fertility in our SimAngus cows. Newborn calf vigor is excellent, marketing demand for SimAngus sired calves is strong, and they produce a superior end product. Our prefix has included JB, JBD, and now VE and dates back to 1983. We have found the Fleckvieh influenced SimAngus to be superior to the average SimAngus cattle. Our focus will remain to offer these FleckAngus bulls in volume, unlike those available elsewhere.

FLECKVIEH Our nucleus herd of Fleckvieh are being developed in our same rugged conditions of the west that the rest of the herd experience. We are striving for moderate framed, easy fleshing, brilliant uddered females to produce some of the few fullbloods available in Idaho and surrounding states. We are also developing many polled individuals to appeal to more customers. We produce non-diluters so there is no chance of getting grey calves. In our experience the Fleckvieh cattle have the lowest PAP scores and thrive in elevated regions.

ANGUS Our Angus are very unique, linebred, maternally efficient, and sound cattle. We are strict in our genetic selection to avoid extremes and potential defective lethal genes. We want moderate, robust, well muscled bulls to exhibit breed character, libido, and produce those easy to manage black hided cow herds. We have steered clear of genetic defects because of our long standing awareness of dirty pedigrees. We will not sell carriers of a genetic defect or commercial bulls of unknown parentage. We list the EPDs that we have found to be the most important in real world ranching.

BREED COMPLEMENTARITY In reference to crossbreeding programs, complementarity refers to the combination of traits from separate breeds that compliment one another so that the hybrid offspring have the optimum combination of traits. For instance, crossing Angus and Simmental cattle results in SimAngus offspring that produce an ideal beef product with the high marbling characteristics from the Angus genetics and improved yield grades from the Simmental Genetics.

QUICK REFERENCE TO EPDs AND $ INDEXES Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first calf heifers. Birth Weight (BW), Expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility in a sire’s offspring compared to another sire. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Maternal Milk (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Marbling (Marb), is expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to other sires. Yield Grade (YG), Yield grade score. All-Purpose Index (API) [SIMMENTAL], evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Weaned Calf Value ($W) [ANGUS], the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit, expressed in $/ head. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F) [ANGUS], calculates a $/head difference in expected progeny performance for post weaning merit. $F uses WW and YW EPDs along with trait interrelationships. Typical feedlot grain value, feed consumption and cost differences are accounted for in the final calculations. Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production.

PULMONARY ARTERIAL PRESSURE TEST (PAP) The Pulmonary Arterial Pressure Score or PAP Score is a tool that when utilized properly can be helpful I preventing and reducing the incidence of High Altitude Disease. The classic signs of High Altitude Disease are lethargy, edema of the brisket, pneumonia like symptoms and diarrhea. This disease can manifest in a variety of subtle ways as well such as poor fertility, chronic pneumonia, poor weight gain. The score is achieved by placing a long catheter into the main pulmonary artery which is the first artery leaving the right side of the heart and entering the lungs. A mean pressure is recorded at this location which becomes the particular animals PAP Score. In general the lower the score the less likely an animal will develop High Altitude Disease and since the PAP score is a highly heritable trait using herd sires and dams with lower scores will reduce the incidence in calves as well. Many factors are involved in the final score of a particular animal such as altitude, time at altitude, age at test, handling methods, previous sickness etc… IN addition with the wide variability of the end environment of the bull it is difficult to apply a concrete “cut off” score for everyone but should be readily used when comparing bulls in a particular sale. Feel free to call with any questions on High Altitude Disease and how to utilize PAP score in our herd. Jeremy Ley, DVM, Fourmile Veterinary Clinic, LLC. 401 Lincoln Avenue, Canon City, CO 81212 (719)425-5687.

Cow Energy Value ($EN) [ANGUS], expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals. Components for computing $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. 19

BEEF CATTLE TYPE ANALYSIS Beef Cattle Type Analysis (BCTA) is an amazing tool to help identify the different types in beef cattle, and how to mate them correctly. Breeders that utilize this service can become more successful in their search for balanced and profitable cattle. Producers can take advantage of many proven evaluation systems to choose their sires. BCTA will then help them identify how to best use these sires on their cow herds. Females are analyzed to find their greatest needs. Males are analyzed to find their greatest strengths in order that they will sire these qualities. The application then becomes very simple by matching needs and strengths.

HISTORY

B EEF C ATTLE ANALY SIS

The sharp and round breeding theory has been around for many years dating back to the 1950’s. It is a good system but was never designed specifically for beef cattle. While I was educated and employed at Utah State University I was fortunate to work with some key individuals that had paved the way for the sharp and round theory to become commercially available. I also had the opportunity to learn from several astute cattle breeders. I soon became aware of the value of identifying different types of cattle and saw the great need for a balanced breeding approach to beef cattle much like those available to dairy producers. Unofficially I have been using this theory of breeding in our own herd for many years. It has proven itself to me and many others year after year of achieving more salable offspring. In short it is the study of bone and muscle, relationship of parts, and how they correlate to improve quality, longevity and productivity. It has taken many years to gather enough experience while judging, fitting, breeding, managing cattle and tracking results to finally offer this service with confidence.

OBJECTIVES This is an unbiased analysis that takes place in person with cattle on the hoof. It does not include pedigree, color, breed, EPDs, genomics, or linear evaluation. The analysis is well designed to sort out and identify the different types of cattle that exist with great accuracy. We hope to have the bulk of AI bulls analyzed and have this information readily available. We will also have a searchable database that can be viewed on our website. Use this breeding guide to increase uniformity, balance, production, longevity and profit from your cattle. It is the only true breeding guide that is a stand alone service to improve quality in today’s beef herds. This service is meant to have breeders tracking progress, learning the relationship of parts, and to prompt individual study as well. It has a rather simple application but us a very complex and accurate system.

APPLICATION To best achieve results we recommend the following guideline:

• YEARLING HEIFERS – analyze prior to breeding, then again after calving. • MATURE COWS – analyze once in a lifetime. • YEARLING BULLS – analyze prior to production sales or use. • MATURE BULLS – 2 and over, once in a lifetime.

For example if a cow analyzed R-U-F meaning her greatest needs are refined, upstanding, and fancy. Mate her to a bull that will sire refined, upstanding, and fancy. This will forever change the way you look at cattle! Don’t delay, schedule an appointment with one of our certified analyzers today.
