Pendant or drop lights include any fixture that hangs off a chain, cord or metal rod. They’re often used singly over round dining or coffee tables, in a clustered set or in multiples over long tables or kitchen benchtops. Pendants are often used as feature lighting, to focus light over a work surface, and to define an area within a room. Size and length will depend on the scale of the room and what needs to be lit. As a rough guide, the lowest part of the light should hang approximately 70cm to 90cm above a table, and at least 75cm above a kitchen bench top.

Floor lamps Floor lamps can function as task lights, usually for reading - when they will often be placed adjacent to a couch or chair, or ambient lighting for living, lounge or family rooms.
Task lights direct most or all light downwards and can usually be swung or manoeuvred where needed while most ambient lights are fixed. They work especially well in corners - a lower wattage will create a soft light that may be diffused or directed up as well as down to create a secondary light source in the room.
