print & repro news Creditsafe responds to BPIF concerns Creditsafe chief executive officer Cato Syversen has replied to a letter from the BPIF in which they voiced concerns at the impact on many UK printing companies of the recent upgrade made to the company’s credit ratings model. The letter pointed out this move had resulted in many printing companies suffering significant downgrades to their credit ratings – with some going from ‘very low risk’ to ‘very high risk’. Creditsafe was asked to explain why this widespread shift in companies’ assessments has occurred, seeking more background on how the new model operates in practice and why the company considers this tool to be more accurate than its predecessor. BPIF also asked for details on how Creditsafe’s model factors in payment cycles agreed with customers, and whether it might be possible to improve the transparency of the credit reports, so that the cause of a drop in rating might be made clear to the companies affected. In his reply, Mr Syversen is adamant that there has been no ‘blanket’ downgrade of ratings for firms operating in this sector

The Rt Hon David Blunkett MP was the guest speaker at The Printing Charity’s Annual Luncheon this month at Stationers’ Hall, London. “Apprenticeships are fundamental to our future,” he said. “The city I represent was built on craft skills and I hope we see a return to those skills.” He praised The Printing Charity for its work, including its support of apprenticeships in the print industry.

The data is processed utilising comparable security links to those employed by the banking industry, with payment experience data integrated only as a variable into the ratings algorithm when multiple payment experiences are available. My Syversen adds that there has been no specific upgrading, or downgrading, of company ratings or limits assigned on the basis of firms being coded as companies in the print industry, stating that “Across all industries, these changes have seen Creditsafe recommend increases in total aggregate trade limits across all categories of company, from small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) through to major multinational corporations.”

general news & products D&K launches new laminator The latest laminator in the Jupiter range is the Jupiter 35L, a 35m/minute B2 laminator capable of delivering over 4,100 B2 sheets per hour. The original Jupiter model was launched in 2006 and at that time it was capable of running at up to 20m/minute, which equates to around 1,700 B2 sheets per hour. Over the intervening years, the portrait fed Jupiter has undergone a number of changes, taking it to 35m/minute and adding a double-sided Jupiter DS model to the range. Today, the PLC controlled, landscape Jupiter 35L will run a B2 sheet either landscape or portrait and boasts a cantilevered air shaft mandrel for faster film roll changes, pallet feeding and a delivery jogger, all supplied as standard. An optional delivery stacker is also available in place of the standard Jogger for pallet to pallet operation of longer runs. With less printed material being produced at B1 and far more being produced digitally at SRA3, the Jupiter 35L is a good choice for both printers and finishers alike; it maintains its ease of handling digitally printed material yet feeding a B2 sheet landscape (as printed) it can avoid the issues sometimes associated with laminating a press-sealed sheet. ■

The start of the new academic year saw an important first for the Communications and Content industries with the opening of the Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy in Greenwich. This new Academy will be the first in the UK to specialise in digital media, preparing generations of young people for the digital age and encouraging some of them to consider careers in these industries. It will be sponsored by the Stationers’ Company. In September 2014 Crown Woods College in Greenwich converted to academy status, with the new name of Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy, and join Leigh Academies Trust along with its seven other academies, all located in South East London. ■

With AMS, a laser consistently monitors glue application during the production of softcover books. Glue application is measured reliably even for differing glue patterns, thanks to the seamless integration of the adhesive monitoring system with the control system of the latest generation perfect binders. “The system measures extremely accurately and it’s capabilities are really impressive,” says Michael Scherrer, production manager at the Scherrer bookbindery in Zurich. ■

Calligraphy just got greener

The European corrugated sector is under ever-increasing pressure to prove its sustainability credentials and meet regulatory requirements on reducing waste. Hot on the heels of its commitment to the Circular Economy package published by the European Commission, global corrugated company SUN Automation Group® has outlined the measures they are taking to help customers improve their eco-credentials. SUN Automation’s general manager EMEA, Rob Dal Lago explained: “The corrugated sector already has an excellent environmental record. In the UK alone, corrugated boxes contain on average 76% recycled fibre, and after use up to 80% of corrugated packaging is collected for recycling. However, many European plants still have outstanding issues to address in the printing process; not least waste-related issues with ink use, washup water, and scrap material.” SUN Automation is using its experience in technical innovation to help European corrugated box plants implement new efficiencies in their processes without the need for massive investment. Enval unlocks the potential of high performance materials using a novel recycling technology based on microwaveinduced pyrolysis. The company has taken this process and applied it to creating the world’s first solution for recycling plastic aluminium laminate, a popular packaging material that currently has no responsible end of life solution. Enval has already received support from major multinational brands and is in the final stages of commissioning the first commercial demonstration plant for

Environmental standards chased Environmental standard ISO 14001, once a ‘vanity project’ for just a few print companies, is now becoming an accepted business necessity in the industry, say print waste managers J&G Environmental. The company handles waste management for over 2000 printers and publishing houses, and J&G general manager John Haines says, “Customers now ring every day of the week for this information and we estimate that the number of companies we deal with seeking ISO 14001 has risen by around 50 per cent in the last two years.” Gaining the standard helps companies demonstrate to customers how their operations minimise environmental impact and comply with regulations. Sustainable waste management is a key element of the standard's requirements, with companies having to show they have legal systems in place recording how much waste is collected, who is handling it, its final destination, and how much of it is recycled. “The demands of a growing number of potential customers with formal green supply chains in place means that having ISO 14001 has become a business necessity,” said Haines “It often makes the difference between getting on to a tender list and not. Lots of new business can now stand or fall on a company’s environmental policy and whether or not it is formally recognised by an outside accreditation body. A couple were Christmas shopping. The shopping centre was very busy and as the wife walked through one of the malls she was surprised when she looked around to find her husband was nowhere to be seen. She was a bit upset as they had a lot of shopping to do so she decided to ring him on his mobile to find out where he was. In a quiet voice, he said: ‘Do you remember the jewellers we went into about five years ago where you fell in love with that diamond necklace that we couldn’t afford and that I would get it for you one day?’ His wife choked up and started to cry and said: ‘Yes, I do remember that shop.’ He replied ‘Well, I’m in the pub next door.’
