THE GENESIS OF A ROCK & ROLL DIARY
Recording ‘How Can It Be?’, British Grove Studios, 8th April 2015
Ronnie Wood remembered keeping a diary when he was 17, but thought it had been lost many years ago. When it became apparent Ronnie’s family had preserved his ‘Executive Diary’ of 1965, Genesis Publications began work on a facsimile edition. Replicating the antiqued leather binding, down to its scuffs and scratches, a craftsman-bound limited edition of 1,965 copies was decided upon. Ronnie’s new artworks include paintings of The Who at the Marquee Club (below); his customised Telecaster (right); and a selfportrait featuring his 1965 diary, as used on the limited edition 7” vinyl (bottom right).
Further research unearthed unseen photographs and memorabilia, and Ronnie added an original text commentary. Ronnie penned anecdotes in his own calligraphy, and was even inspired to create a series of artworks. His new drawings feature friends and musicians such as The Who, and early influences such as Howlin’ Wolf. A special recording session resulted in Ronnie revisiting one of his earliest compositions, ‘How Can It Be?’, 50 years on. The single is now available as an audio accompaniment to Ronnie’s diary.
