NEWS

Spring 2013

Don’t lose focus on Genetics The dairy industry as a whole has experienced some difficult times recently and while the latest payout announcements from supplier companies have shown a positive improvement in the outlook, it’s still going to be some time before we see significant change. However it is also very important that during these challenging times you can ill afford to lose focus on the genetics of your herd. In an article recently published in the Australian Dairy Farmer, Dr Pauline Brightling, who led a study called Feeding the Genes, noted that in all feeding systems the daughters of high genetic-merit (high APR) bulls produce more milk and last as long or longer in the herd than daughters of low genetic-merit bulls. The study, commissioned by ADHIS with Dairy Australia funding, also dispelled the myth that the benefits of cows with higher genetic merit were not realised in herds using low-input or total mixed ration feeding systems. The study drew on data from 505 commercial dairy herds across Australia, all using a variety of different feeding systems, and time and time again showed that good genetic merit in all feeding systems is key, with the best results coming from the selection of bulls with high APRs. The message is clear: even while we experience these challenging times your overall profitability relies on the correct choice of quality genetics that best suit your farm and management goals. With the release of the August ABVs, Genetics Australia continues to provide you with a fantastic choice of sires to assist you in achieving your goals with both locally-based Australian genetics or overseasbased genetics through our relationship with World Wide Sires (WWS).

Better genes, more milk

Good genes mean more milk, regardless of the feeding system, according to the results from Feeding the Genes, a study commissioned by the ADHIS with Dairy Australia funding. Regardless of feeding system, herd managers should select high APR sires whose ABVs are aligned with the breeding objectives for their herd. These bulls are listed in the Good Bulls Guide. Visit the ADHIS website at www.adhis.com.au for further details.

Cows like this BUDDHA daughter bred by A & W Eccles, Purnim Vic. show that the best results come from a selection of bulls with high APR scores.

WWS Product and Sales Manager Gerard Brislin has taken up the role of World Wide Sires (WWS) Product and Sales Manager in Australia. WWS represents the best from breeding programs in North America and Europe, and is marketed alongside Genetics Australia’s quality locally-sourced product. The aim is to offer Australian dairy farmers the best range of genetics from all corners of the globe.

Gerard Brislin

Gerard commenced his involvement in the Herd Improvement industry 21 years ago and for the past 10 years has working in a sales and marketing capacity with Genetics Australia. “Having first-hand experience with WWS products, especially those from Select Sires and Accelerated Genetics, for many years while on the family farm in Gippsland, I am confident that they can deliver great results for Australian farmers”, Gerard said. Gerard has lived at Bacchus Marsh for the past eight years with his wife Julie and children Emily and Mitchell. Developing a comprehensive reproduction program for farmers Introducing Dr Rajesh Sharma Rajesh has been with Genetics Australia for a little over twelve weeks. Rajesh has a PhD in Veterinary Science with a focus on animal reproduction from Massey University in New Zealand.

Some important points to consider include: • Are heifers at the desired weight and Body Condition Score (BCS) for mating? • Were the cows in good condition at drying off? • Are the cows in good BCS and on a rising plane of nutrition at joining? • Have I done a pre-mating herd health check with your vet? • Are there any stress issues, especially ketosis, acidosis or lameness? • Am I supplementing with minerals? • Have I organised my heat detection aids? • Am I going to synchronise and what is the program? Do I need to check with my vet? • Have I picked out my calving ease bulls for my heifers? • Am I going to calve my heifers before the cows? • Do I need to do an AI refresher course? Being prepared is half the battle! Good luck with your breeding season.

Profit, Type and Fertility Dr Rajesh Sharma is a veterinarian with a strong interest in reproduction programs. Rajesh brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Genetics Australia, built over by nearly 20 years of study and more importantly practice. Apart from working as a practicing vet and lecturing at university, Rajesh has contributed no less than twelve reproduction focused research papers, and to on-line scientific learning resources, a book chapter and has attended and spoken at many international conferences. The focus of Rajesh’s role is to develop a comprehensive reproduction program for farmers, including advice and trouble shooting. He will also be working on new and improved semen products, all designed to improve your fertility and profitability. He can be contacted on (03) 5367 9221 or rsharma@genaust.com.au.

Rajesh’s pre-season fertility check list With the spring joining season almost upon us, it is important that we carefully assess the status of herd prior to mating start date. This not only gives you confidence that your herd is ready for mating season but also provides time and opportunity for improvement if there are issues.

New Semen Initiative Do you do Fixed Time AI in your herd? We may just have the product for you.

Profit, Type and Fertility – that is our breeding goal at Genetics Australia. The power of genomics combined with recent improvement to the methodology for calculating fertility ABVs by ADHIS, means that we can have even greater confidence when selecting young bulls and making breeding decisions. Genetic solutions for fertility are often overlooked because they are not a “here and now” fix. However, using superior fertility genetics is an investment in your future. The compounding nature of genetic gain means it is just like getting interest on your interest. Your cows need to get in calf – why not get them in calf to superior fertility genetics! Genetics Australia has a group of high fertility proven and Future Gen sires that are not only high for profit but also are breed leaders for fertility.

Genomics: tomorrow’s genetics today There are a lot of claims made about genomics. Some true, some questionable. One thing is for certain, not all genomic bulls are equal and only one genomic evaluation system is based on the data from the cows that you are milking in your herd and that is the Australian Genomic system.

Feature sire: DELFIN

Genomic technology gives us the ability to use tomorrow’s genetics today. It broadens our choices and takes the risk out of young sire use. It allows us to make greater progress for the important hard to measure traits like fertility, and longevity. However to take advantage of the benefits of genomics, we need to be discerning when it comes to the bulls we use.

• JETFINN–Ranneslov makes DELFIN an outcross pedigree for so many joinings. • 110 for udders makes him the No. 5 genomic sire available in the breed today. • 40 kg of protein makes DELFIN top 3 and very profitable. • 56 kg of fat makes him top 2 and even more profitable • 112 for Body Depth makes DELFIN an ideal cross for Goldwyn genetics • 115 for Pin Width and 120 for Pin Set means his daughters are designed to halve maternal Calving Ease. • 112 for Front Teats and 114 for Rear Teat placement means DELFIN puts them in and under. • A2A2 status makes him available for that everexpanding market.

Genetics Australia genomic sires dominate the ABV(g) list. Seventeen of the top 20 available genomic sires are from Genetics Australia, including the top 3 sires who are all sons of the original No.1 genomic sire – JETFINN. The first daughters of JETFINN are calving around Australia right now and the feedback is fantastic! Check out the Genetics Australia genomic trait leaders! Further details for these bulls including pedigree information can be found in the Genetics Australia on-line catalogues at www.genaust.com.au.

DELFIN – Manna Farm Delfin is one of the best profit, production and type genomic sires available.

DELFIN is available at $15 though our semen packs.

Progeny testing is a cost effective way of getting random access to these elite young sires and most of these bulls are will become available as FutureGen genomic sires through the course of the spring. Check with your local supplier or Genetics Australia representative for price and availability.

International sires go from strength to strength at Genetics Australia In 2007 Genetics Australia added a small number of International sires to its bull team. Now in 2013 the choice of quality sires runs deep. Australian dairy farmers have the opportunity to select from a full range of World Wide Sires products across five dairy breeds, as well a strong portfolio of beef sires. This international offering is “first class”. The inclusion of WWS sires sourced from five countries around the world, marketed alongside proven sires from Australia’s most successful progeny test program, has something to offer everyone when shopping with Genetics Australia in 2013.

WYMAN (Goldwyn x Oman) daughter. One of Goldwyn’s best sons around the world offering the total package of production, type and improved health and fitness traits, RRP $38.

Premium Holstein Pack has never looked stronger Genetics Australia has made available Fustead Goldwyn GUTHRIE – 7H9420 as a choice in the 2013 Premium Holstein Pack, alongside MEDALLION, BUDDHA and genomic sensation PICOLA. OBSERVER – 7H10606 (Planet x Oman) daughter. The first Planet sons are beginning to receive daughter proofs in many parts of the world.

At 217 APR(i), with Type of 115 and Mammary of 116, GUTHRIE helps make the Holstein Premium Pack as strong as ever. Calving Ease is a real feature across the pack and he is great buying at a pack price of $26.

When your balanced breeding goal demands increased attention to productivity, type, health and fitness traits, this range of international sires can deliver. One bull in particular is Pirolo Goldwyn WYMAN (Goldwyn x Oman) from Italy. He ticks all the boxes, including positive components, and also offers Calving Ease with an ABV(i) 104. Also offering Calving Ease within his profile is 7H9321 Ralma GOLD CROWN (Goldwyn x Oman). With many daughters now calving in Australia, he displays the qualities demanded by Australian dairy farmers today. 7H9321 Gold Crown is the highest-rated bull in the line-up for Daughter Fertility after the August ABV release with an ABV 106. His new price is also attractive at $25 RRP. A popular choice over the past 12 months has been Sabbiona GOLDFARM (Goldwyn x Storm), for those looking to emphasise positive deviations and increased type and udder traits. GOLDFARM continues to maintain his position at 206 APR, with the added degree of fewer difficulties than average for direct Calving Ease.

A 7H9420 GUTHRIE (Goldwyn x Blitz) daughter. Recently a group of Australia breeders visited herds in Canada and the USA and inspected calves and yearlings sired by GUTHRIE. They suggested he added good strength and width to his progeny inspected across the tour. We can expect daughters milking in Australia as early as Autumn 2014.

Spring 2013

New star Golden Dreams leads quality team at WWS Since the introduction of genomics there has been no sire that has demanded more attention than GW ATWOOD — 7H10506. Now this outstanding proven sire — with more than 1500 milking daughters in the US and many more around the world, including Australia — welcomes the arrival of his full-brother Heavenly GOLDEN DREAMS. Many say this “Italian Stallion” is set to supersede his older brother, with daughters now entering second lactation in parts of Northern Italy. Features include increased stature whilst siring cows with flat dairy bone, very good Feet and Leg structure, quality udders with near-perfect teat placement, and improved health and fitness traits. GOLDEN DREAMS remains the breed leader for Type and Udders after the August 2013 proof summary in Italy. RRP $42.

GOLDEN DREAMS (Goldwyn x Durham) daughters display all the characteristics to suggest they will be around for many lactations.

The domination of Zani Bolton MASCALESE (Bolton x Oman) around the world today is very evident with such a unique pedigree that offers no Goldwyn or Shottle. This breed leader maintained his position as the No. 1 sire after the recent Italian proof summary, and continues to be sought after in many breeding circles around the world.

Breeder tour visits USA and Canada in July A group of Australian breeders supplying elite genetics to Genetics Australia’s HORIZON progeny test program saw first hand the increased attention being paid to genomics among many North American breeding programs.

A balanced breeding profile shows MASCALESE transmitting increased milk, added dairy strength and body capacity. Udders are shallow, high and wide in the rear, with strong centre support and average teat length. Also seen as a strong feature is his ability to transmit a sound Feet & Leg composite, showing increased heel depth with excellent locomotion. RRP $60.

Genomics the way to the future

Information gathered from numerous farms in two provinces in Canada and nine states across the USA confirmed how the technology has been accepted. Genomic sires now make up close to 40% of semen used and the elite breeder herds we visited are now using about 80% genomic sires.

Today many dairyfarmers in Australia and abroad see the future of their breeding programs through the eyes of this global phenomenon known as genomics. This fast-moving technology brings to you tomorrow’s genetics today and Australian dairy farmers have access to the world’s best offering from countries such as USA, Canada, Germany and Italy through the WWS offering. The table below shows the group of genomic bulls available across the spring period.

Northern Victoria sales manager and breeding programs representative, Greg Tiller, led the tour that visited 14 farms, viewing many donor dams and daughter groups from proven sires, including De Su Observer and new graduate De Su Bookem (Planet x Ramos) and was not disappointed.

Refer to the International Holstein catalogue for a full list of available proven and genomic sires.

A full tour report can be found on the Genetics Australia website at www.genaust.com.au.

Sires that will improve Australian dairy herds! Australian dairy farmers demand a lot out of their dairy cows and herds. They need to produce milk with a strong emphasis on kilograms of protein and fat. Our cows need to look good, and they need to be a pleasure to milk.

They must be fertile and have the ability to get back in calf. Australian cows must have good temperament and milking speed to ensure they are trouble free.

MEDALLION daughter, Renyard Family, Timboon, Vic.

MEDALLION

MEDALLION cows are the type dairy farmers strive to breed and love to milk. His daughters have high, wide rear udders, with ideal teat placement. They are true dairy cows, average in stature, great width of chest, with open angular ribs. Production

Spring 2013

Jerseys deliver total performance The Genetics Australia Jersey line-up has never been stronger, delivering total performance sires to the breed. Genetics Australia bulls continue their sensational secondcrop performance.

Genomic bulls

Proven sires

RACEWAY has the potential to be one of the breed’s great sires. His August genomic proof is 287 APR, 36kg protein, 800 litres of milk, 109 Mammary and 110 Overall Type, and he improves stature. Included in his genomic proof are 17 of his first milking daughters, giving us added confidence. He could be the bull to watch in the 2014 ABV Release.

Genetics Australia offers the breed’s best genomic packages combining type and production.

Jarndie Larfalot Sabina 2070 VG89 bred by Byron & Debbie Smethurst, Cooriemungle, Vic.

LARFALOT now has over 1000 daughters in his production proof and is a real solids improver. His strong, deep-bodied daughters are complemented by strong well-attached udders. NAVARIAN (Valerian x Navara), the best new graduate in 2013, continues to improve. He added thirteen new daughters with an increase of 7% reliability and jumped a massive 33 APR and 6 kg of protein. NAVARIAN’s daughters continue to be recognised as one of the breed’s best type improvers. We are continuing to work on his semen meeting Genetics Australia high standards

RACEWAY– Aberdeen Valerian Sandown ET

RACEWAY’s dam, Nowell Power Sandy SUP92, is one of the breed greats. She has won on-farm challenges, been a show champion, classified 92 points and was ranked in the top 20 genetic merit cows in the country. She is backed by generations of great cows and is the eleventh straight generation to score 90 points or higher. Sandy’s dam is a full sister to TAILBOARD and the next dam is a former No. 1 cow of the breed and dam of SANDBLAST. The 6th dam is Ferdon Vins Sandra VHC, champion cow at Melbourne Royal. TAHBILK enters Genetics Australia’s genomic team right at the pointy end. Being No. 2 for udders and No. 3 for Type, this high APR Vahahlem son is certainly going to create interest among Jersey breeders. Semen is available now. LEVIGENES has arrived at Parwan Park passing his quarantine and health checks. His August genomic proof improved to 280 APR, 109 Mammary and 113 Overall Type.

NAVARIAN – Colnarco Navarian

Genetics Australia’s other exciting new graduate DELIAN stabilised his production proof. His type continued to improve to 115 Overall Type and 109 Mammary, up two points for both from earlier in the year. Farmer favourites GAINFUL, BADGER and ASTOUND continue to live up to and in many cases exceed expectations.

Broadlin Vanessa 2701 Ex91, dam of LEVIGENES

Spring 2013

Aussie Reds team an outstanding group The August ABVs confirmed that Genetics Australia has an outstanding team of Aussie Reds. Daughters of these top sires are performing in the tough Australian conditions.

ARBBONJOVI ARBBONJOVI (Orraryd x Torp 882) is team leader and is in high demand. He offers a significant improvement to protein, fat and components. He is rated above average for all important traits. He deserves to be used by all Red and cross breeders and is now an international star, attracting a lot of interest in the USA, England and Australia.

The Aussie Red breed continues to be the first choice breed for many cross-breeding programs because of the improved health and fitness traits across the breed.

ARBLEX

ARBBOBDOWN

ARBLEX (Orraryd x Christiansborg) is outstanding for type and mammary system – he will improve udder depth, fore attachment, front teat placement and centre ligament. He is in the top bulls for survival – his daughters are staying in herds. He has good ratings for daughter fertility, a sound wellbalanced production ABV and a high rating for temperament.

ARBBOBDOWN (Botans x Husveg) has a production ABV that is now 98% reliable (873 daughters, 176 herds). His ABVs are outstanding for protein and composition. He is an obvious choice to mate to high-milk flow, low-protein composition cows. He is also in the top group for survival – his daughters are staying in herds. ARBBOBDOWN is a natural poll and about 50% of his calves should be natural polls.

ARBLEX continues to be in high demand. He is an obvious choice for all Red and cross breeders.

ARBLIPPMAN

ARBLEVER

ARBLIPPMAN (TMoberg x Stensjo) is the Red team leader for milk production. His production proof continues to improve, indicating that his daughters are continuing to perform in their second and later lactations.

ARBLEVER (Botans x Krejstad) is a rising star of the Aussie Red breed. His proof improved with more daughters. From the Louvic Lindy cow family that gave us ARBLORIKEET, ARBLEVER now has a far higher proof than his renowned ancestor.

This outcross sire has been in high demand. Two very strong cow families are behind his pedigree: the Primula cow family at Bosgowan and the Red cow family of HV Jensen in Denmark. The dam of TMoberg was the full sister of Fyn Aks.

He is a top all-round performer, a strength being improved cell count. Based on pedigree he should be a calving ease sire.

ARBFROSTY ARBFROSTY (Botans x Skole) is another successful son of Botans, who has sired three outstanding bulls in the Premium Team – ARBLEVER, ARBBOBDOWN and ARBFROSTY. ARBFROSTY has a high, well-balanced proof, including positive ratings for production, type, workability and functional traits. His rating of 103 for temperament and his ratings for the mammary system are very pleasing. Left: ARBLIPPMAN daughter bred by Jack Couch, Panmure, Vic. Aussie Reds

Genetics Australia MERCHANDISE

Heat detection: you need the best information If you can correctly identify cows in heat, you’ll get cows in calf. The best thing you can stick on an animal to identify heat is an Estrotect patch.

Why do they say ‘as good as a bull’? Simply because the Estrotect shows you cows that are in standing heat; and that is what you need to know to AI your cows. There are many aspects to successful AI, but one of the most crucial is inseminating animals that are in standing heat. Correct AI on cows in standing heat at the correct time will give you good conception rates. Cows that don’t conceive by AI often are still empty when run with the bull. In trials run by the South Dakota State University, detection of standing heat using Estrotect was compared to detection by a bull, and the difference was the bull was 92% correct and Estrotect 91% – almost exactly the same.

You need the best information With missed heats costing around $200 per heat, and the majority of heats occurring at night when visual observation is difficult, it pays to use Estrotect. You simply stick the self adhesive Estrotect patch on the cow’s rump and monitor the rub off surface. If the animal isn’t on standing heat and runs away when mounted it won’t rub the surface right off so you can see it isn’t in standing heat. Estrotect is available in five bright colours so you can change colour between inseminations.

How good is MooMonitor at electronic heat detection? One of the first farms using MooMonitor recently had a pregnancy check of 26 cows. Twenty-four were inseminated after MooMonitor was used for heat detection, and according to the collars the other two cows were showing no signs of heat. The 24 inseminated cows were in calf, the other two were checked by the vet and found to be anoestrus. As far as the farmer was concerned, MooMonitor is close to 100% accurate at heat detection. MooMonitor is a collar system that monitors cow behaviour 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — the employee that never sleeps. It picks up cows even if they only come on heat for a few hours in the middle of the night, and is very accurate (in University tests 87.5% of heats were correctly identified). Combined with a Dairyking drafting gate, MooMonitor can be set it to identify cows in heat and draft them automatically – timed by hour of onset of oestrus to maximise your conception. With an internet connection you can have information on the cows on your phone or iPad. Users report enormous time savings from simply not being tied to monitoring cows every day, and getting much better heat detection results than their previous method. MooMonitor is fully serviceable, with all parts replaceable including batteries.

Alpha AI sheaths from IMV

Seals wet weather clothing

We’re getting excellent feedback on the new Alpha AI Sheaths from IMV — faster AI and easier to use, especially on difficult animals. These were introduced after many years of research and represent the first major change in sheath design in many years.

Genetics Australia branches stock the full range of Seals wet weather clothing – parkas, vests, overtrousers and bib and brace overtrousers. Seals has an enviable reputation for durability, being waterproof, breathable and flexible. The design is great, with full cover flaps, adjustable sleeves, strong quality two-way zips and heavy duty pop studs.

Using technology developed in embryo transfer, the sheath end is rounded and the semen is deposited out of dual holes in the end of the sheath. There is very little chance of contamination being picked up and insertion is much easier. The dual dispersal works well especially in difficult inseminations in the cervical folds. The sheath is designed to be used on IMV Kombi guns and we have found they need to be used on these guns for best results. If you are doing your own AI upgrade into a new gun and sheaths – you’ll find AI easier and you’ll be improving the conception potential.

Buy any two items of clothing – or one item of clothing and a pair of Seals or King Tred boots – and we’ll give you 10% off in store.
