Calves are the future of your herd, so you shouldn’t leave their health to chance. They need clean, high-quality colostrum to ensure passive transfer of immunity and to receive the nutrients and energy to thrive. Almost as important as choosing the right colostrum product is feeding it quickly. When a calf is born, you should first allow the dam to bond with her calf by cleaning it off. This bonding helps the dam and calf identify with each other as a pair. If the calf does not rise within the first two hours to nurse, we recommend intervening by feeding a colostrum supplement. Sometimes just the energy from a small feeding of colostrum is all it takes to get that calf up and nursing vigorously. If the calf has not successfully nursed after six hours, provide an additional supplement. After six hours, the calf’s ability to absorb antibodies from colostrum is decreased, so the goal is for the calf to receive a full replacement feeding within that amount of time.

Choose the colostrum product that's right for your herd.

Like selecting the right genetics, you can select the right colostrum product for your calf’s needs. Some will be more critical, and some might need a slight boost; either way, you can trust that Headstart® colostrum the best choice for your calves. 
