The Bloomin’ Funion

We were asked to consider the instalations that seattle artist Buster Simpson designed in a private “technology park” that locates itself within encore! and its surrounding area. We found that is underutillized as an urban area. The skatepark is the most dense urban area, and there was a curious interaction: seniors marveling at the fun and wonder of the skating kids. It was so important to pursue that longing for youth, that yearn for oddity.

Now, i ask you to consider the onion. The object in question is universal, it exist in all cultures. An onion features itself in almost any memorable dish across cuisine, an onion accents but never overpowers the dish, an onion’s structure lends itself to multiple uses. The onion becomes the perfect allegory for what should be installed at the park; something open ended that provides shade and rest, draws attention to the site, and frames the activity Buster Simpson’s intallations will provides. To prepare the onion, you first chop off the adventitious root, which serves as the foundation. Then you peel the skin, accessing the viable meat of vegetables. Finally you chop to your discretion to get the shape you desire.

Fonion sketch

And i ask you to consider the color pink. The color in question is vibrant and alive, a call to action and reaction. Pink is a beaconof activity, opinion and discussion. The color pink also creates a v ties the onion to the site by connecting it to it’s surrounding context. The pink onion becomes iconic, much like the church, not just something to see, but something to experience more than once. Florida is known for its odity, why not lean into it?

FULL ASSEMBLY

STEP ONE

We created a set of dynamic seating and shading conditions in the likeness of giant pink onion. The entire structure would be fabricated from cut rolled steel, put together in slices and mechanically fastenedto create the final shape. Powdercoated glossy hot pink to reflect sun and lessen overheating of the seat. The front Panels would be welded onto the ribs after attached to the foundation.

Final Site Plan

We Specifically placed then funion so as to be a beacon to the park from the East side of the park. Buster’s Water Bearers serve as a beacon and a point of intrigue on the west side, so there is interplay between the service of the two. The Funion also cretaes a scope of his drums in the park, which are never obstructed. It was important to be odd and unique in a way that is not overshadowing and still allows Buster’s pieces to breathe.

THE FRAME PLAN VIEW

The frame was the chosen of the competition, but the class was tasked with coming together to create a synthesized, collaborative version of the Frame, together. The design was bent and stretched into something similar, but different from its initial form. New groups were formed, and my group task was with helping different groups finalize thwe whole frame concept.

Summer 2019

We started the semester by looking at the history of Chicago, for my research I wanted to do a little digging furthermore to find out who was the founder of Chicago. Some historic site that we can go visit, I also look into the sears tower which now the Willis Tower, after doing this research we moved on to drawing, by making collages section trying to figure out an overall shape for our digital model. Our program for the project was vertical Farms, where we will need to include: a ground level, Lobby, Restaurant, Offices, Educational, Tilapia, and then come the farm. for my particular project, I wanted to have two floors for the restaurant. For the ground floor, I wanted to be a market where you can find mostly seafood. You can buy raw seafood or cook. To cook the seafood you have to go to the restaurant on the second level where you would ask the chef how you want the food to be cook, then while you wait for the food, you can enjoy a cocktail and look down the lobby and admire the view from the open floor.

MAPS We begin the semester by doing some research about the neighborhood that we will be assigned to, later on, the site that they gave us was Sao Cristovao and Caju. We looked to see what kind of activities we can bring to that particular neighborhood and we started by creating some map and trying to find what is it about that particular neighborhood. Some of the thing that we find is spectacular, we begin by looking into the pride of the neighborhood since it is Brazil we all know that they are known for being the best soccer country in the world, we moved on to the possible destination, trying to figure out people in that particular neighborhood after they finished with some activities, where do they go and are thing close are things from them. Then we created another map for food access, we move on to waterfront access and finally access path to Market semente.

Santo Christo Residential

Santo cristo .Residential/ Affordable housing/ activity center proposal Visiting Rio de Janeiro and walking to Santo Cristo where we were assigned to go explore was very fascinating. The main thing that I noticed was the historical neighborhood with empty houses. eventhough they were old and empty, they preserved the façade to maintain the historical value. After exploring the neighborhood further, I concluded that the site can be used to build some affordable houses and activity centers such as Gym, Tennis court, Basketball court, video games, and a community store. The store can also be used as an information session where visitors can come to learn about the sites as well as can selling hand made jewelers, wrist band, and bandana. I believe those thing can bring a lot of visitor traffic back to the neighborhood. Couple more things that can be added in the activity centers are cooking workshop, how to make wristband from scratch workshop when there’s visitor visiting that neighborhood. Activity center • Gift shop for visitor or the people living in the neighborhood. • Cooking workshop • Art exhibit • Affortable housing that can be rented to tourist like a hostel • Bringing tourist Affortable housing • Hostel for tourist • 2-bedroom-2 bath • Single family housing The scope of the project is to make living more affortable in Rio de Janeiro, after seeing some of those prices in Brazil, because i wanted to make it afforatble for low income family in Rio. After seeing the presentation by some of the AIA members about putting people first and that was my goal to put people first by doing affortable housing because us as architect we tend to forgot about putting people.

Master plan showing the taxi boat, I added some texture to the ground give it a sense of people want to follow the path from the residential to the church, the activity center, and the restaurant when you heard brazil the first thing that always comes to mind is the greenery, I added some green that follows the path, next to the residential are some benches for people to sit and enjoy the waterfront view, people can also walk their dog and just there for some fresh air. on top of the residential number, the number is a rooftop restaurant, which the residents can enjoy or the people visiting the neighborhood and go there for some fresh food or a cocktail or just meeting with a friend. To the right, I am showing a node which is zooming of the area I am focusing on for my project in Santo Cristo.

Fall 2019

Our proposed invention was a carpentry museum located in Kyoto Japan, with the purpose of creating a section that features unique wood-working display spaces’ intergrated with other programmatic elelments. We started off the design process in creating three distint diagrams. The first one is based off Picasso’s “Ma Jolie” a cubist style art work. The second a Plan view of the Shibuya Ward in Tokyo, Japan, and the tird one a diagrammatic section through an engine block abstracted theses images into graphics you see here to be used as a generators for form, spatial quality, and relationship between spaces. From this, we created nine section drawing that focused on natural lighting qualities and human scale relation to the space. We then selected some of these variants to collage in the form of multiple canotypes, Studying the results, and selecting one to mkae our overall section draft model. That then led to this final conceptual image of how the intervention section might look in considering scale, program location, and relative posiyion to the sun.

Gengby Alice Master Final Project 2

The main reason i choose this site, its because it is the safest place in haiti, as we all know all the things thats going on in Haiti its always a struggle and thats why the title of my project is hope, because i want to give those kids an opportunity so they know that its not the end they always become someone tommorow eventhough the country doesnt offer them anything.
