Zermatt Ski Resort sits under the 14,692-foot Matterhorn—the tallest mountain in the Swiss Alps that towers over Switzerland and Italy.
Magic Mountain
While the ski resort town of Zermatt has been on my best friend’s must-visit list, I’ve always been a St. Moritz kinda gal, but after experiencing this winter wonderland, I’m anxious to return. —Samia
MUST RIDE:
An easy two-hour train from Zurich (the train station is inside the airport), plus another 20-minute train ride, and you arrive in the majestic town of Zerma . The cogwheel railway takes you up nearly two miles above sea level with breathtaking views of the Ma erhorn glacier. Once there, 14 giant glaciers surround you. It’s pre y magical and so romantic!
MUST STAY:
The OMNIA Hotel in Zerma is considered one of the area’s best ski resorts. New York architect Ali Tayar (1959-2016) successfully transformed the classic mountain lodge concept into a magnificent modern Swiss Alps resort—minimalist but with warmth and coziness. The boutique property has only 30 rooms, including 12 suites. the-omnia.com
MUST CHILL:
St. Moritz has its steep ski slopes, but Zerma is St. Moritz on steroids. It’s the highest in Europe—open 365 days a year—and where Black Diamond slopes are the steepest and narrowest. Many are not for the faint of heart, like me, but fear not; groomed pistes exist for every ski level, some miles long. One of the unique a ributes of Zerma is starting in Switzerland and skiing into Italy for lunch.
MUST SKI:
Ending the day at the spa is so rewarding. Start by diving into the indoor/outdoor pool (shown above), or take a soothing dip in the whirlpool (right)—both with remarkable views of Zerma and the Ma erhorn. Follow with a 90-minute hot stone body massage, Heaven on the Ma erhorn.
MUST DINE:
The hotel restaurant has a cozy vibe, and Executive Chef Tony Rudolph’s menu celebrates the authentic taste of local alpine and seasonal quality ingredients. Try the Nut Roast, forest mushrooms with grapes, chicory, and dried fruits (Above), or the Racle e or Fondue. Naturally, we (meaning I) put on a couple of pounds. No regrets.
MUST GIVE BACK:
OMNIA’s parent company is USM Furniture. Their foundation’s culture of philanthropy focuses on promoting and supporting individuals and organizations in the fields of culture and art, architecture, design, music, sports, and education through fondationusm.org
