Pershing Square
Los Angeles | Research compilation A Town Square is a contested place.
No single agenda should dominate the formation of such an important public space.
Although we are constantly digitally connected, physical interaction remains a critical component of daily life.
Our research led us to a technological process that carries the ideas and interests of all competing interests, yet presents itself as neutral and dispassionate. We applied computational scripts to compile, arrange, and present the quantitative input of all kinds of users. The computer is the synthesizer of countless analytical inputs and author of dozens of unique schemes, each infused with the aspirations of the stakeholders.
A town square must provide a place that cultivates the exchange and expression of thoughts and ideas. The goal of Gensler LA’s research project is to create an active, participatory design process; a process that loosens the gridlock from countless stakeholders, and naturally competing interests providing instantaneous, visual feedback to gauge success and garner unilateral support. At stake, is the prospective creation of a true public space with all the socio-cultural rewards that accompany a well used town square. Understanding the neglected conditions of the once iconic public heart of Los Angeles, we were compelled to use Pershing Square as a testing ground, as a case study and a real world challenge to apply our newly developed toolkit. At the center of Los Angeles, in the very midst of a downtown urban revival, Pershing Square stands witness to ongoing contests between the new versus the old; progress versus tradition; market stalls versus the stock market, the programmed versus the informal. Pershing Square is a space in flux, and its introverted indeterminacy is no longer good enough. It is a place that must rediscover and recreate its identity as an important public space in a maturing urban core.
This process does not require that any one of the stakeholders defend their own work or attack the work of another. We’ve created a tool that encourages opposing parties to coalesce and find commonality around an unbiased scheme, the kernel of a plan, the start of a place. Pershing Square is a test, an attempt to establish the rules of the game and a neutral process that is customizable, yet strategically specific enough to yield a custom-tailored Town Square to any community.
Gensler LA The Town Square Initiative is a yearlong volunteer effort in which Gensler designers set out to unearth and re-imagine unexpected open space in cities around the globe. All 43 Gensler offices were invited to participate in the conceptual project, in which we challenged our designers to identify open space in the city and re-imagine it as a town square. The square was fenced off and ornamented with fruit and forest trees. The plan was very casual and unplanned. Trees and shrubs were planted randomly by donors. It was not heavily populated, day or night.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
• Blue Comments - positive • Orange comments - negative stand there and look up at all the sky scrapers without being blocked by another skyscraper. A lot of people say it doesn’t have a lot green and yes, that would make it nicer, but the fact that there is still a spot that isnt a skyscraper or a parking lot left in downtown makes this spot wonderful.
It’s a pausing point on the walk through downtown... there’s a fountain, quite a bit of open space for people to sit around and eat their lunch.
It’s not very green, nor is it very beautiful and architecturally appealing, but I really appreciate it for being there in the middle of all the building, and hustle bustle. It’s a nice little block
of breather.

It was still midnight. The lights could turn off or on all they want. I circled the park a little more until the sun slid in between the skyscrapers like a giant bright slices of toast.

I have been there a few times and my last time was a bit weird since i do not have a family, or considered a family man at all, but i did attend a event with a good friend that has a small baby girl, and from the beginning it was not a great experience,
once we went from the parking structure to the the park level, we noticed that this park is not well kept, you have to keep your eye out to see who should really be there and who should not, when i say this it is because there are a few shady people in downtown, so you just have
to keep your surroundings on a high level, not saying that the place is unsafe and all, but you just never know.
Well i would wish that they would keep that one elevator running so my friend could have used it to take the baby on the stroller, which it was fine since i had to carry the lovely baby, and i do not mind, i just think about the people that do not have a helper in many ways. Keep the elevator going a bit longer, it really is not too much to ask people. The staff was good, i only saw a security guard, which was very helpful in the elevator question and the parking cashier, pleasant attitude. So if your in the area, i hope you find a way to visit
it is really not bad, but i really do not think after dark its family friendly...
