Our People

Get to know:

Andrew Levine Where did you grow up? I grew up in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania just outside of Philadelphia. After undergrad, I moved to Boston to attend grad school and start my career.

Andrew is a Technical Designer in our Raleigh office who joined the firm in September 2022 (on his birthday, to be exact!) Prior to joining Gensler, Andrew operated his own design business focused on residential design in the Raleigh area. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Villanova University and a Master of Architecture degree from Boston Architectural College. Since joining Gensler, Andrew has helped to lead a variety of project types spanning our Residential, Hospitality, Aviation, and Office Developers practice areas. He is also an amazing cook and has recently won a chili cook-off and cookie baking competition. Way to go Andrew! 06

What inspired you to pursue Architecture? The problem-solving side of design and architecture is what first drew me in. I’ve always loved coming up with solutions and putting together the pieces of a puzzle, and architecture allows me to do just that by finding a way forward to meet users’ needs. Growing up, my father worked in the kitchen and bath remodeling business, so I was also exposed to the industry from a young age. I went from playing hide and seek in the showroom cabinets to shadowing him as he created drawings, and I ultimately started working alongside my dad and his crew at 16. What are your hobbies outside of work? I love to cook, especially with my daughters. We recently built a brick oven from a YouTube tutorial my daughter found, so we’ve really been enjoying homemade pizzas. I also enjoy spending lots of time outside running, mountain biking, and camping. What was the first job you had? When I was thirteen, I started mowing my neighbors’ yards. That’s actually how I bought my first mountain bike! What is your biggest highlight of 2023? My younger sister and I completed a 50 mile run together this year, which was super memorable.

What is a small act of kindness you were once shown that you’ll never forget? You know those friendships that can always pick back up where you left off, despite how long it’s been since you last talked? I have a good friend like that from high school who brought me into his friend group in Colorado, which created a whole new network of people for me to connect with. It was a small gesture, but had a big impact on me. What is the best piece of advice you have been given? Something that’s always going through my head is “Measure twice, cut once.” I can’t even tell you how many mistakes could have been avoided if I just checked one more time.

Andrew with his daughters Amelia and Johanna

What are you looking forward to in 2024? Last year, my daughters started paddle boarding so I’m excited to learn how to do that and join them in 2024.

If you could choose any destination, where would you travel to? A European ski destination sounds nice. I’ll take any of the Alps - French, Italian, Swiss I’m not picky. What topic could you talk about for hours? Trail running! I could tell you everything you need to know. Nutrition, pacing, hydration, the best shoes to wear, how to follow a map... I could even tell you what you need to pack based on the temperature and location of your trail. Seriously, I have spreadsheets on this.

A delicious pizza cooked from Andrew’s homemade brick oven 09

Get to know:

Anna Viccica Where did you grow up? I grew up in Salem, Massachusetts and my parents are still located there. I try to go back home during the fall season for all of the fun Halloween festivities. Definitely recommend booking early if you plan to travel there during that time! What inspired you to pursue a career in Interior Design? Both of my parents are Architects, so I grew up very interested in design and their work. My dad (now retired) worked for a large Architecture firm in Boston that specializes in higher education. My mom is self-employed and owns her own firm that focuses on remodeling and adding additions to historic homes in New England.

Anna is a designer in our Raleigh office who joined the firm in February 2023, but interned with Gensler Boston in the summer of 2017 before her senior year at Savannah College of Art and Design [SCAD] in Georgia. Anna grew up in Salem, Massachusetts, where she loves to visit often but especially in October for all of the Halloween festivities. Since joining Gensler, Anna brings a fresh new perspective to the Raleigh office and plays an integral role on several workplace projects in the Raleigh area. She is coleader of Raleigh Community Impact and brings a tremendous level of enthusiasm, organization and joy to everything that she leads! Thank you, Anna! 10

What do you like to do in your free time? You can always find me wandering around local garden centers on the weekends or trying new coffee shops. When I’m not out and about, I love to cook at home and try out new recipes. What was the first job you had? My first job was scooping ice cream in the summer at a local ice cream shop. They had many creative flavors, but I think my favorite will always be classic strawberry with chocolate chips! What is the best piece of advice you have been given? The best advice that I have been given is as simple as “never stop trying”.

What topic could you talk about for hours? I love my houseplants and could talk for hours about them to anyone who will listen. My favorite plant is my monstera albo. I got it when it only had two little leaves and now it has about 12 and is about 4 feet tall! If you could learn any skill, what would it be? I would love to learn another language. Growing up, I took Chinese, German, and Spanish classes, but unfortunately, none of them stuck. What is your biggest highlight of 2023? My husband and I bought our first home in April this year! We are thrilled because it has a large yard for our dog, Maya, to run around in. Anna visiting a house from Hocus Pocus in her hometown. If you could choose any destination, where would you like to travel to? Japan is definitely at the top of my bucket list of places to visit. I’d love to spend a few weeks traveling from city to city and immersing myself in the culture and history. There is so much sightseeing I’d love to do and food I’d love to eat. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a veterinarian. I love animals and had many pets growing up.

Get to know:

Demetra Thornton Can you share a bit about your background? I have Midwestern roots! I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and moved to Hampton, Virgina for college at Hampton University where I received a Bachelor of Architecture. My first few jobs helped me understand what I did and did not want to do. This experience included working blueprint machines (I had a few bumps!) and oceanfront condo design which taught me a lot about the design and construction process. After these first few job experiences, I knew I wanted to work on larger project types. I joined a leading sports firm in Kansas City, Missouri before ultimately joining Gensler in Los Angeles in 2011.

Demetra joined Gensler in 2011 and was a Managing Director of the Los Angeles office up until her [upcoming] transfer to Raleigh. With an extensive background in design, construction and management of projects, her expertise and passions around balancing elevated design, project constraints and team growth will be an invaluable addition to the Raleigh office. She is a leader in the Sports Practice Area and has managed many sports and entertainment facility projects including the BMO Stadium and San Diego State Snapdragon Stadium. We’re thrilled to have you joining us in Raleigh soon, Demetra! 12

Looking back, several of my first job experiences in the field taught me a lot about having a certain level of ‘grit’ and this was something that enabled me to really grow the Sports Practice Area during my time at Gensler. While in Los Angeles I also attended University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) to get a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. I continued to work at Gensler during this time and became a Managing Director of the Los Angeles office in 2022. What inspired you to pursue a design career? My father was a general contractor and throughout my childhood I would assist him with a lot of jobs around our home. It may sound cliche, but as a child I loved to play with Legos and I liked building things. Design is a career path that allowed me to continue to be creative and explore.

What are you most looking forward to with the move to North Carolina? I am so excited about all that is ahead. I’m looking forward to working at a different scale and with an entirely new group of people. I’m very excited about the unknown!

Demetra and her family, Holiday 2023 What do you like to do in your free time? I like an adventure; I like to stay active and I play a lot of sports. I have a large dog (Hampton - pictured above!) and I enjoy taking him on long walks and runs. I also love to travel. One favorite trip was to London with my parents to watch an NFL game. It was such a meaningful continental trip to take together. Another was a solo trip that I took to Beijing. Experiencing a city and culture which has such a different background and exposure was very enlightening for me. What do you think you will miss most about Los Angeles? Life has different stages, so I try to live with no regrets - I’m looking forward to the new adventure in North Carolina! I will, however, miss the diversity of food and the weather.

What is the best advice you have received? You have two ears and one mouth - use them proportionally. I believe it is important to be a good listener, understand others’ perspectives and at times step back and see how things play out. As a leader I have learned that often the end result will be much better if you take a moment to listen. What is something people may not know about you? I enjoy cooking! As with many of my passions, I like to learn the craft of things. I experiment with new cuisines and explore markets and preparations that are authentic to the cultures. Sometimes this means I do things the hard way but I have fun with the craft of it! Can you tell us about a favorite project and what made it special to you? The BMO Stadium project was culmination of so many important things. It was an incredible opportunity for me to lead an amazing ($300M) project from beginning to end. Our team was young and excited about working hard to make something great together. We all grew a lot through the project duration and it gave me the opportunity to realize what type of leader I want to be. 13

Bandwidth

A new campus designed to unite teams and celebrate local roots

Location: 4501 Reedy Creek Road Raleigh, North Carolina 27607 Project Size: Office: 500,000 GSF Ohana: 43,600 GSF Fitness: 28,400 GSF Barn: 19,700 GSF Construction Completion: 2023 Building on a 10 year relationship encompassing renovations and additions to Bandwidth’s prior space, Gensler teamed up with Athens Development Partnership for a new campus master plan, base building architecture, interior design, signage and environmental graphics.

walking and biking trails, outdoor sports courts and fields, an outdoor amphitheater and a 0-5 Montessori based school for employee’s children to attend. Bandwidth’s commitment to their employees and to their idea of the whole person promise inspired so much of what this campus is. From the proximity of the school and office, to the multiple terraces with sweeping views of the site, to the outdoor yoga lawn – the campus has something to offer everyone, and manages to feel warm, welcoming and intimate even at such a large scale.

Bandwidth is a technology company founded and based in Raleigh, North Carolina, and everything Bandwidth builds, it builds for its people. The company takes pride in how it turns real estate resources inwards to show employees how much they are appreciated and to give them the tools to become their best selves.

In many ways Bandwidth is the antithesis of a typical technology company and they celebrate those differences. The design team recognized this and it became a driver for many of the decisions throughout the process. Their people first approach and whole person promise became the team’s North star. The concept for this project draws from Bandwidth’s culture to create a campus that is rooted in North Carolina. The team looked to local geography, topography, colors and textures, history and folklore for inspiration; weaving it all together to create a space that tells the story of Bandwidth and North Carolina united as one.

The 25-acre campus with work space for 2,000 employees provides a comprehensive fitness center, an events center barn, access to local

The design team worked hand in hand with their people to create a campus that is truly unlike any other corporate campus in Raleigh.

SAFEchild

A new Advocacy Center instilling safety, respect and empowerment

Location: 2541 Kidd Road Raleigh, North Carolina 27610 Project Size: 20,000 GSF Construction Completion: 2023 Stop Abuse For Every Child (SAFEchild) is a non-profit organization that provides a full range of family support, child abuse prevention, and intervention services. Founded upon a model that provides specialized intervention and treatment, SAFEchild promotes empowerment, recovery, and healing for all visitors. The new 20,000 square foot building implements distinct exterior and interior characteristics designed to be welcoming with qualities which instill warmth and security throughout. Upon arrival to the site, the building forms, covered porch, and landscaping create a feeling of familiarity and softness through residential attributes. Within the entry and throughout the first floor advocacy center, the design was driven by SAFEchild’s aspirational goal of serving multiple families at once – a functional model that they plan to share with other advocacy centers upon completion. The spaces feature 22

family waiting rooms, interview rooms, medical exam rooms and observation rooms – all proximate and strategically organized into suites dedicated to the visiting child and family. Due to the circumstances of the visits, the spaces are designed with a sense of privacy and respect, allowing the families to privately circulate without encountering other visitors. Group meeting and support spaces throughout the building were designed with the objective of providing ultimate flexibility. SAFEchild facilitates small and large group sessions throughout the day and evening hours, which drove the design of the interior spaces and furniture selections to reflect the needs of the varying group settings. Many of the meeting spaces on the second floor serve a dual purpose of also supporting the administrative suite – something that has been severely lacking for the staff to date. The themes of comfort and warmth carry through to the administrative suite and the spaces provide recalibrated support to the staff who serve as the backbone of the organization. SAFEchild’s new home will serve as a transformative space for children, families and the professionals who work there. The new facility instills a sense of hope and healing for visitors and will continue to propel the organization’s mission forward: towards empowering families and eliminating child abuse in Wake County.

Costa Coffee

The Coca-Cola Company teams with Gensler to roll out US Costa Coffees

Location: 1020 White Street SW Atlanta, Georgia 30310 705 Town Boulevard Atlanta, Georgia 30319 Project Size: 1,500 - 2,000 GSF Construction Completion: 2023

With an unwavering commitment to broaden its horizons and explore new international markets, Costa Coffee, a renowned British coffeehouse chain, embarked on a significant venture to establish its brand in the United States. Drawing upon its rich British heritage, Costa Coffee crafted a fresh, engaging coffee experience tailored to the American audience. As Costa Coffee’s retail design partner, Gensler ensured these two initial locations remained true to the brand’s ethos: uplifting life and keeping the world’s cup half full. Industrial qualities meet sophistication in these Costa Coffee stores, where each corner unveils unique and irresistibly Instagrammable moments. Visitors encounter spaces characterized by purity and 26

simplicity, where a neutral palette is balanced with warmth from wood tones and punctuated by touches of Costa Coffee’s signature red, leaving room for local art features. Artistic elements gracefully blend the industrial nature of the retail design with the elegance of Costa, featuring soft brass accents, curved countertops, and gentle lighting fixtures. Distinctive lighting fixtures define various seating zones within the coffee store, while carefully selected furniture creates a comfortable and inviting atmosphere, encouraging patrons to linger and savor the Costa experience. Costa Coffee’s journey into the United States through these initial stores represents a strategic brand immersion and local adaption blend, serving as a testament to Costa Coffee’s commitment to providing exceptional coffee experiences. The team will continue to partner with Costa Coffee in a strategic roll out of several new locations across the country in the near future. We have our fingers crossed that Raleigh will make the short list!

Rise

Pathway to Leadership

Program Background: Over the past three years Gensler’s Southeast Region has pioneered the Rise learning series. While you may be familiar with the Rise program, you may not know the background story around the goals which originally launched the initiative. Rise began in 2020 when regional leadership identified a need for a platform to give new voices the opportunity to develop as leaders. The program was founded around several primary goals: Consolidate older material into a new, fresh format. Hear from more people across more offices across the region. Establish a deep knowledge around topics. The challenge of discussing a complex topic in a short amount of time helps participants to develop and practice this knowledge. Rise originated with more technical-oriented programs, but has evolved so that the discussion topics now range across broader topics to suit all designers. All backgrounds and experience levels are encouraged to attend, as the presentations are intentionally developed in a way to be relevant at all levels of experience and expertise. 32

How the Program Works: Each year, representatives from the office identify the most pressing needs to help develop or refresh our designers on key topics. The offices then select which topics they have the most interest in, and a small team of rising leaders in the office develop a discussion on the topic. Some teams select topics they have expertise in, others purposefully pick topics they do not, with the goal of learning something new! These teams are then paired with Rise Champions, who are the key to keeping a regionwide rotating learning program running. They keep teams on schedule, connect them with experts and provide advice. The Rise Champions connect the teams with Rise Reviewers, who review the subject matter and ensure the teams cover the topic comprehensively. The regional Learning Coordinator works with the teams to submit educational documentation for continuing education credit. The teams develop the presentation and rehearse to ensure the presentation can be given comfortably in the time allowed. By the time the team presents to the region they have developed an expertise and those who attend the presentation live or watch the recording will know which experts to talk to!

Did you know:

There have been 31 Rise presentations since they began in 2020! A full list of the Rise topics and a network path for the supporting presentations and recordings is listed below.

Local Participation: Our Raleigh Office has made many contributions to the Rise program over the years. To date Gensler Raleigh has led three of the presentations and paired with the DC office on a fourth. Our presentation topics have been Stairs, Pantry Best Practices, Mass Timber 101, and Exit Discharge. These conversations have been lead by Dena Wangberg, Jon Eggert, Dustin Brugmann, Ashley Cown, Adam Stoeckle, Hyun Tak, Kevin Tracy and Casey Farren. See more information on the following page for a breakdown of the objectives discussed during the sessions. Dena Wangberg is one of four Rise Champions in the Southeast Region and Adam Ruelas is a regional Rise Reviewer. Want to be involved? The only qualification to participate in the Rise program is a desire to learn and a desire to help others learn. We hope to hear new voices representing the Raleigh Office in the years to come! Rise’s objective is to be a pathway to leadership, and it is a great way to become a voice in our office and region while building upon key presentation and technical skills. Please reach out to our local Design Realization champions if you have an interest in becoming more involved in Rise!

Snapshot: Holiday Traditions Throwback photos Revealed!

Ana: My family loves to cook (and eat). We’ve made the same meals for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day since I was born and it’s a tradition we look forward to every year. Harold: We usually attend church on Christmas Eve. Our Church has a 4 o’clock service, then we go to my parent’s house and exchange gifts. Everyone is allowed to open one before Christmas. My younger brother and his wife or whatever friends we have in town come over after the kids go to sleep to help us put toys together. My wife buys everyone matching pajamas and we like to stay at home with the kids all day on Christmas. Chris: Every year my family and I watch The Muppet Christmas Carol. Dolly: I make lasagna for Christmas Day lunch every year! Rachel: My favorite holiday tradition is listening to the nativity story at my grandparents’ house after Christmas dinner (which is really lunch that you just keep eating more and more of throughout the evening) before we open gifts. We’ve rotated the reader through the lineup of grandkids for as long as I can remember and my grandpa records it every year. We have at least 26 years of home videos just from our family Christmas gatherings. Casey: Fun fact: I was born on Christmas Eve! Sarah: My birthday is December 1st, and my mom would always joke that she never had to buy my dad a Christmas gift because I was his gift. The year I was born, that Christmas my mom literally put me under the Christmas tree with a bow on my head. Dustin: Kind of a one off tradition, but when I studied abroad in Denmark, I stay with my Danish host family over the holidays. On Christmas eve we lit real candlesticks and stuck on a live Christmas tree, then we proceeded to link hands and dance around the tree taking turns singing carols in Danish and English. This was their tradition and it was fun to be a part of.
