There was this young preacher that had recently graduated from Fuller Theological Seminary. With such a distinguished pedigree it was nothing for him to land his first interview with a sizable church. The church was located in Texas. They paid for his airfare and put him up in a real nice hotel within 7 miles of the church he would be tending to, if you landed the job. His interview included the delivery of a sermon to the congregation the Sunday after he arrived in Texas.

After he delivered the sermon that Sunday, shook everybody’s hand and did all the meet and greet things typical of such a vetting process, one of the elders approached him and invited him to lunch. He said, “Come on with me preacher, I got this restaurant that’s got one of the best steaks in Texas...well, I’d say in the whole US of A!”

The young preacher took this as a good sign. When they arrived to the restaurant a pretty little texas gal seated them, and she knew the elder by name. The young preacher was astonished to see a full grown, live longhorn right there in the center of the restaurant munching on some grass. He exclaimed, ‘I’ve never seen anything like that before, very impressive.’

They took their seat and ordered some Texas Sweet Tea. The young pastor was eager to hear what the elder had thought of his message, so he immediately asked him what he thought of the sermon. The elder sat back in his chair and thought a minute. The he leaned in and said, “Son, you see that longhorn over there?” “Oh, yeah, very impressive.” “Mmmhhhmm”, said the elder. At this point the young preacher knew he landed the job. Then the elder leaned in a little closer and said,”Your sermon was just like that longhorn, a point here and a point there, and a whole lot a bull in between, I’ve never seen anything like it. What are they teachin’ y’all out there in California?”
