UNESCO World Heritage Site: The Historic Centre of Rome According to legend, Romulus and Remus founded Rome in 753 BC. In the beginning, Rome was the centre of the Roman Republic, then of the Roman Empire, and in the 4th century it became the capital of the Christian world.
WORLD HERITAGE SITE The World Heritage site includes the entire historic centre of Rome, as well as the Basilica of St. Paul’s. Rome includes ancient treasures like the Roman Forum, the Temple of Saturn, the Colosseum, and Palatine Hill.
THE COLOSSEUM The Colosseum sits in the centre of Rome, just east of the Roman Forum. This structure is the biggest ancient amphitheatre built, and to this day is still the world’s largest standing amphitheatre. In its day, the Colosseum held an average of 65,000 spectators, with the venue hosting between 50,000 and 80,000 people at various points in time.
PALATINE HILL Palatine Hill is one of the oldest parts of the city of Rome. The site was once home to imperial palaces and houses of the wealthy, and today is mainly an open-air museum.
