01. SIKH TEMPLE, BARKING Agenda 21 architects studio - Summer 2013 Site 100 North Street, Barking, Essex, UK Size / Budget 3310m2 / £7,000,000 Stage Feasibility studies to planning application Brief Design of a new-build “gurdwara” (sikh temple), adjacent the existing one (Gurdwara Singh Sabha London East). It must contain: a large “langar” (dining hall), three “diwans” (assembly halls), classrooms, educational and day-care facilities, congregation halls, residential areas for visiting priests and musicians, a small library and a shop.
7
01. SIKH TEMPLE, BARKING
8
> Plan Sikh temple, ground floor Project Although it may appear as traditional at first glance, the building is designed with a strong modern spirit in terms of proportions, typology and space layouts. The proposal seeks to reconcile the varying
aspirations of the community and thus the interior is designed to take advantage of the comfort and flexibility offered by modern layouts, construction and technology. 9
01. SIKH TEMPLE, BARKING
> Plan Sikh temple, 1st floor
> Plan Sikh temple, 2nd floor 10
> Cross section
> north elevation The classic recognisable features of the Sikh temple are reinterpreted and its architectural principles (no floor above the sacred book, no room using water above the “diwanâ€? etc.) are respected. In keeping with traditional Sikh architecture, the façades will be clad entirely in intricately carved white marble, featuring elaborate cornices and balustrades created by specialist Indian craftsmen.
> Detail of the entrance
More numerous and refined with each new level, the ornaments and decorations reference the birth place of Sikhism and the many ornate and delicate Gurdwaras to be found in the Punjab and elsewhere in India. 11

02. VILLIERS MARKET HALL LDRP architecture & design - Spring 2014 Site Villiers-sur-Marne, France Size / Budget 2500m2 / 750.000â‚Ź Stage Concept design to tender action Brief Refurbish the ageing market hall of Villiers-sur-Marne and bring up to standard the existing infrastructure: provide better accessibility for disabled people around and inside the market, better fire safety, better hygiene (through waste management and waste water management), better adapted lighting system, better signage system etc.

> Existing site Project Merger of six towns, the community of municipalities has many different aspects but the cities are all isolated and don’t really interact with each other. 1
2 Concept
3
<
1. finding enclosed areas in the city 2. creating a structural axis 3. generating new interactions
Urban principles to transform évry 1. project generated around perspectives creating squares and buildings 2. pedestrian movement influenced by the shape of the buildings 3. boulevard distended for tram stations 4. fields extended to the other side of the road 5. canal made entirely visible
The A6 highway, lined with industrial and economic areas, divides this heterogeneous territory. The site, located at the border between évry and Courcouronnes, along the highway, is composed of private housing estates, of a lake along an express way, of a farm in the middle of an interchange, of a small forest, of an enormous car park, of a small business district, and, in the centre, of a deserted area. The project revolves around the definition of an urban boulevard, a “spine” acting as a showcase for the different identities of the conurbation, displaying their own qualities, creating a rhythm, with its breaks and its elements of surprise, as you go along. Taking into consideration the future project of a tram line along this axis, with its several stations, as well as the different types of existing buildings, perspectives take shape and organise the space. 23

“METAMORPHOSIS”: AN EXTRAPOLATION OF ABU DHABI Reza Azard studio - Autumn 2014 - Semester 8 published in “Extrapolations Métropolitaines”, Le Cabanon, 2015 Site Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates Brief Do an “extrapolation” of a city, based on research and initial presentation at the beginning of the semester. The “extrapolated” city should present the original city’s unique characteristics in a more exaggerated, poetic, critical and graphic manner. The process is divided in three steps: 1. Analyse the actual city and make a detailed drawing of its “extrapolated” version 2. In this newly created context, examine and reinvent some architectural archetypes: an observatory, a necropolis and a theatre 3. Select one of these archetypes and create a scenography for an exhibition about the city, in the context of the Venice Architecture Biennale. 27

Characteristics Taking Abu Dhabi as the precedent, the project looks into trends of the city and analyse them. The following step is to identify unique characteristics that pertain to the image of an imaginative version of the city. Small drawings are made on the themes of: 1. city materials : recycling 2. surface, size & height: dizziness 3. mobility & transport: speed 4. population & density: concentration 5. climate, geology & ecosystem: desert 6. plan, grid & organisation: topography Extrapolation
>
“Its birth remains a mystery. Some say it has been existing for centuries but that yesterday there was nothing. Some say it is fond of its past, but that today everything is gone. Lost in the desert, visible from the sea. Lost in the trees, visible from the skies. To enter, only one road leads to her . To leave it, you cannot walk. If you ask its inhabitants what it looks like, some say it is made of twigs and fabric, some talk about domes and marble, some, finally, see it drowning in a cloud of glass and steel. Some even say sometimes that it is a monolith, that the whole population lives in the same space, that the inside and the outside blend together, that everything is mixed, that everything is separated. Some say it is always moving, that it changes shape indefinitely, that, day and night, mechanical arms are shaking frenetically, that pieces of the city grow overnight, that it is continuously destroyed to be rebuilt again. Every time I go back I discover her again, always a bit different, always a bit the same. You can admire or despise it, you can adore or hate it, but everybody is looking for its place. Some live in the sky, others on the earth. Some live on the sea, others on the sand. 29

During this entirely solo experience, the viewer can sit in a middle of a small cabin made of glass attached to a crane that can move in every direction, rotate around its axis, be lowered down or lifted up. The necropolis
>
The necropolis of the “extrapolated” Abu Dhabi is a reinterpretation of “towers of silence” used in the old Persian religion of Zoroastrianism. They believed human bodies where impure and thus couldn’t be buried without damaging the earth. Therefore, the corpses were left exposed to the open air in circular enclosed spaces where scavenging birds would come to eat the flesh until only the bones remained. Only then, the dead could be put into a ossuary pit at the centre of the tower.
6
Here, within the main structural elements of the city can also be found the final resting place of the dead. The bodies are left hanging inside of open boxes made of adobe, to decompose, until the remaining skeletons are pushed into the central void at the bottom of the tower when space is needed for new corpses. 5. The whole structure is buildable using only one element, steel angles irons. This way, it can be built fast and using only one technique. To create the walls, a dent is made on each end of a log, which is then placed by hand between two pillars. Logs are then stacked on top each other to fill the space. HAITI: A TECHNICAL SCHOOL Fabienne Bulle studio - Spring 2012 - Semester 7
Site A large plot (320m x 80m) near Titanyen, Haiti. Brief Design a self-sufficient technical school. It must contain: a church, a stadium, an internet cafĂŠ, a canteen, classrooms, a concrete-block production unit, a wood/steel workshop, a textile workshop, an agricultural workshop, cultivated land and a small market to sell the school production and crops. The construction span is around 30 years, depending on the money gathered by the different workshops. It will be divided into 10 steps, each one following the next in a logical way.

Dividing the width of the plot in two, it will become a reference line to place other elements on the land such as buildings and plants. It will also act as a main axis for pedestrians and the water system. Diverse species of trees will also create different atmospheres. At the entrance, people can climb up to the church to attend mass or relax on the tiers, under colourful flamboyant trees, while watching a football match. Along the road, the lot is bordered by moringa trees for a more discreet path. Close to the classrooms, a majestic elephant ear tree, shelters the outdoor amphitheatre also used for some classes.
> detailed plan of the textile & moringa workshops 40
Passed the internet café and the canteen, the line becomes narrower, indicating the more private part of the site: we‘re now under the mango-tree lined walkway, a secret orchard.

Project Built with the local population and construction partner: “La Voûte Nubienne”, the project consists of 5 small pavilions. Their structure is made of equilateral arches built with adobe bricks, with a height varying from 1,2 to 3,6m. The arches are linked together by wood beams on top of which are fixated braided straw panels that create shadow and allow the inside to remain cool. The ground is also shaped with cement to create different places to sit, lay down or rest.

This will be greatly inspired by Ralph Rumney’s situationist photonovel: “The leaning tower of Venice”, borrowing the same layout and aesthetic style. An exhibition entitled “Venetian Stories” presenting the studio’s photonovels from the workshop as well as the “extrapolated” city drawings will then take place from 14th -21th November 2014 in the Arsenale, during the Venice Architecture Biennale.

A dancer from the “shadow dance” theatre in “extrapolated” Abu Dhabi, travels to Venice for the first time. She discovers the city looking at its reflections on the water from the canals and puddles. Little by little, she realises these reflections change all the time and move as if they were dancing. She is then able to communicate with the city and dance with it.
> Exhibition “Atlas, dessein de villes” at Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture Exhibitions & book After the success of “Venetian Stories”, two other exhibitions showing the “extrapolated” cities drawings were held and a book was published: - “Atlas, dessein de villes” from 3rd- 30th April 2015 at Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture, Paris - “Extrapolis”, from 2nd November - 23rd December 2016 held by Recycl’art, at Bruxelles-Congrès metro station, Brussels - “Extrapolations Métropolitaines”, (Le Cabanon, 2015) 52
All the pictures taken are upsidedown, bringing the image in the reflection at the top of the frame. Inverted like this, they give the sense that the reflection is now the “true” image, an alternate reality.
Une pièce au sol dont la représentation se déroule en six actes. Les danseurs se déplacent avec délicatesse, ils suivent une chorégraphie inspirée par la houle.
