Percy Main Amateurs v Cramlington Town Northern Football Alliance Nike First Division 7th February 2015

View From...The Gaffer Our last game against Birtley was one of the best all round performances of the season. We played some excellent stuff, created a tonne of chances, overcame them physically and were patient when we didn't convert our chances. It would be easy to stick with the same 11 that have played so well in the last few games but with such a strong squad it is important that we rotate things a little so expect to see a slightly different starting line up today. It's a sign though that the management team trusts every player in the squad. We trust their ability and we trust their attitude. No one wants to be left out of the side but the players understand the bigger picture. The bulk of the squad have also trained exceptionally well. The weather hasn't stopped us with good numbers turning up at the Soccerdome and training with the intensity needed to keep our good form going. February promises to be an exciting month with games against some challenging opposition and we know we have to be on top of our game to get the results we want. As always, thank you for your support. Nuge

View From...The Stands Good afternoon and welcome to Purvis Park for today's Northern Alliance First Division match against Cramlington Town, The good news is that if you're reading this, then the game is probably on and has beaten the elements. Generally games between The Main and Cramlington Town prove to be close run affairs and that proved to be the case during our meeting at The Sporting Club back in August when we shaded a 3-2 verdict on our last midweek game. A long range Ryan Laws effort somewhat fortuitously evaded all and gave The Main the lead before Ken Bell equalised for Cramlington. The deadlock lasted only minutes before Sam Thompson put us back in front and current top scorer Dan Sneap made it 3-1 before the interval. Wayne Eastway reduced the deficit with a thunderbolt of a free kick from outside the area, but The Villagers hung on to make it 6 wins out if 6 at the time. A perfect start to the season! Percy Main AFC are pleased to welcome RHD Construction on board who have kindly sponsored the team track suits and very smart they look too!. A pitch side ground hoarding will appear very soon bearing the company’s name and logo, while on a similar note the club are set to announce a new 'main sponsor' which will help to take us forward off the pitch as well as on it. Exciting times! Details on the website as and when. Enjoy the game today......

Previous Match Report Pt1 Saturday January 24th ’15 | Nike First Division | Percy Main 4. Birtley St Joseph's 1 Percy Main's winning run continued at the expense of Birtley St Joseph's in a game which The Villagers dominated and truth be told should have ran up a far more convincing scoreline but for some wasteful finishing, particularly during the first half and an assured display by the over worked custodian Kevin Quigley who was making his debut for the visitors. Statistically wise. It was The Main's 6th consecutive victory since the 2-1 reverse at home to AFC Newbiggin on November 22nd, during which time the Purvis Park side have scored 26 goals, while the latest victory in keeping with games of late saw 4 different scorers on target and when Rob Watson wrapped things up in the 90th minute, he became the 19th Villagers player to register this season. Birtley are 1 of only 2 sides to have beaten The Main in league action this season, that deserved win coming on November 1st by a 2-1 verdict, but the visitors never looked like repeating the earlier scoreline and found themselves under the cosh for much of the game. After Adam Green had given Percy Main the lead just 3 minutes in, the mystery was how it took another 44 minutes of play before another goal arrived in the home side's favour.  Apart from the opening goal, Percy Main carved out no less than 11 clear goal scoring opportunities during the opening period which ultimately went unrewarded. Those present had barely time to gather their places before Ant Ridley cleverly swept the ball cross field for Green who raced all of 70 yards to bear down on goal and fire past the dive of Quigley. It was just the start the home side wanted and galvanised into action, attacked the Birtley goal at will. Ryan Laws sent a 25 yard effort just wide, Quigley went full length to deny Sam Thompson and with a quarter of an hour gone Graham Allen released Green who bore down on the right side of the area and smacked the ball against the post with the goalkeeper well beaten. As play centred in the visitors final third, Birtley's Jason Snowball almost put through his own goal and Chris Laidlaw through on goal was thwarted by Quigley who saved with his legs.

Previous Match Report Pt2 Saturday 03/01/15 | Northern Alliance Premier Division | Cullercoats 2 Percy Main 5 Following the mini Christmas break, free scoring Percy Main Amateurs gained another vital win at third placed Cullercoats in the Northern Alliance North Tyneside derby, but showed great strength of character after being forced to come from behind as their hosts started the stronger and raced into an early 2-0 lead with barely a quarter of the game played. The scoreline meant that The Main have now hit 22 goals from their last 5 games, all of which have gone the way of the Purvis Park side, who have now opened up a 14 point gap at the top of the Northern Alliance First Division table. Having faced each other twice at Links Avenue since Cullercoats rejoined the league in 2006, Percy Main were still to record a win on their hosts soil. Added to that, The Main's narrow 2-1 home win in the corresponding league game over Cullercoats back in August thanks to goals from Dan Sneap and Sam Thompson, pointed to another close fought game. For their part, Percy Main's squad included 5 players who have represented Cullercoats in the recent past, while Richard Nugent and Danny Nelson from the management team had both held similar connections with the home side. Cullercoats included John Amos in their line up, a centre forward who was instrumental during The Main last successful promotion season during the 2009-10 campaign and netted his side's second goal. The game played in front of a sizeable crowd on the first Saturday of 2015, saw Cullercoats race out of the blocks and shock The Villagers with a goal on 8 minutes. Kevin Watler just outside the area played in Dean McCarthy who hit the post, but his follow up effort found the net despite the desperate attentions of James Leggett on the line. Encouraged by their start, Cullercoats defender Mitchell Elliot then made a great last ditch challenge to thwart Sam Thompson bearing down on goal, but the home side pressed and doubled their lead as McCarthy turned provider for Amos, who produced a clinical finish to perfectly loft the ball over the head of Rob Rodgerson in the visitors goal from the edge of the area. Stung into action, Ant Ridley shot over the crossbar for The Main, before the referee adjudged that Thompson had been held back in the area on 26 minutes following a cunning ball in by Davey Surrey. Thompson himself stepped up to make no mistake from the resultant penalty and half the deficit to encourage the visiting contingent.

Northern Alliance Roundup Just three games beat the big freeze as the Northern Alliance programme was almost obliterated by snow, ice and waterlogged pitches. Newcastle Building Society Premier Division Goals from Craig Boyle and San Millington gave North Shields Athletic three points as they beat Whitley Bay A. The result takes Athletic up into third spot. Nike First Division Ethan Bewley struck twice in Ponteland United’s victory over Newcastle University. Gary Cook got the other with James Golby striking a consolation. Northumberland FA Senior Benevolent Bowl Wallington went into the semi-finals with an extra-time win over Shankhouse. Matty Blackith’s first-half opener for the Greens was cancelled out by a Russell Ward penalty with just three minutes to go, but Kyle Reardon popped up with a tidy, curled finish to put the Oakford Park outfit through to a last-four meeting at Walker Central. A BRIEF HISTORY OF PMAFC Percy Main Amateurs were formed in the 1919-1920 season by ex servicemen returning from World War 1, playing in the Northern Amateur League and finished their first season as league champions, also lifting the Northumberland Minor Cup - the ground was then known as Middle Row Park as reference to three sets of cottages on the site, Low Row, Middle Row and High Row.

The club also won the Championship on 4 consecutive seasons between 1925-1928. During the 1929-30 campaign, Percy Main reached the Quarter Finals of the FA Amateur Cup, defeating then notable opponents Cleethorpes Town, Rawmarsh Welfare and Yorkshire Amateurs before going down to eventual finalists Bournemouth Gasworks Athletic - this game produced The Main's share of the gate as a huge £105, 12 shillings and 9d!

Between 1931 and the War years the club played in the Tyneside Senior League before rejoining the Northern Amateur League.

The Villagers subsequently joined the Northern Alliance in 1968 and enjoyed Northumberland Amateur Cup success in 1968,1970 & 1971 also lifting the Northern Alliance League Cup by beating Bedlington Terriers at St James Park the following season.

In 1978 The Villagers won the Northumberland Senior Bowl for the first time with a 1-0 win over West Allotment at North Shields Appleby Park ground.

The Northern Alliance League Championship was won in consecutive seasons 1981 and 1982 while the club finished runners up in 1983.

Percy Main were relegated to Division 1 in 1992, but were promoted as champions in 1998-99 and the club went on to lift the League Cup in their first season back in the top flight.

In 2004 The Villagers ended their Premier League season in fourth place and won the Northumberland Bowl once more, defeating Cramlington Town at Whitley Park, but two years later the team were relegated.

The Village Ground was renamed Purvis Park in 1996 in recognition of 50 years dedicated service by the late Alan Purvis as player, secretary and chairman.
