Boundary and Surface Studio Work. Spring 2009 Tutors: Hu Bin, Wang Fang-Ji Collaborator: Ye An-Yin

The site sits between a road and a community. As a community market design, the project has several strict requirments. There should be no exits along the community boundary, and full consideration should be taken into the influence to the community. Thus, I tried to develop the building from a boundary between the open and noisy road, and the relatively enclosed and quiet space of community. The boundary of the bulding itself also became a key point for the project. The boundary of the main space develop into belt spaces to bring diversity.

Differentiation & Integration Undergraduate Thesis. Spring 2010 Tutor: Li Lin-Xue

This project planned for and designed a new campus with 4 to 5 colleges for the Sichuan University. The drawing to the right shows the idea behind my proposal: a belt with different levels integrates classrooms, lecture halls, a library and sports space as a whole. Different types of transportations running on different levels ensures efficiency and safety; meanwhile, the belt is lifted in the air, providing more outdoor space for the campus. Another advantage for this concept is the new form of functional organization. With public classrooms and other public facilities put together, different elements are integrated into a center for the new campus. An additional merit of such operation is the flexibility for potential new college(s), which can be easily implemented by adding to the existing belt as a plug-in part.

A Memory Place

Master's Thesis. 2011-2012 Committee Chair: Hans Rott Committee Members: Kathryn Albright, William Galloway

It is memory that makes a space into a place. You care about it and it becomes a part of your life. The language of architecure is about form, structure, materials, light and so forth, and I used it to make a memory place in my thesis. The actual site is located in the downtown Blacksburg area, just beside the Virginia Tech campus. With several different owners, right now it is an outdoor parking lot. My thesis is to design a memory place here, with space for parking and outdoor activities for the downtown and university populations. Overall, the concept is a lifted ground mass to form parking space underneath and a plaza on top.

Tr a d i t i o n a l B u i l d i n g Measurement Studio Work. Summer 2008 Tutor: Li Zhen Collabrators: Wang Pu, Zhang Ye, Yu Si-Jia, Lv Jian-Ce

As a traditional Shanghainese architectural style, Shikumen combined Western and Chinese elements and Shikumen buildings have become a unique symbol of Shanghai. At one time there were 9000 Shikumen buildings, comprising about 60% of the total housing in the city. However, Shikumen has become a precious memory for most Shanghainese as more and more large apartment buildings appear.

This Shikumen building housing seven families, is located in a traditional Shikumen community. Since the exquisite outwall decoration was removed in the 1960s, it is hard to believe how beautiful the interior of the building is at first glance. We measured the building, recorded the ceiling pattern and detailed interior decoration and figured out the structure of this building based on the measurements.
