Geo Stories of our places and people: São Simão S. Simão is involved and protected itself by the S. Miguel Mountain which seen from the south, is similar to a dormant volcano at the bottom of which Pé da Serra is located. It is the Penouco, as it is named here about the ending of a quartzite folded mountain lined like a big wall in the landscape. Following to Northwest, through a flat ridge where once the Tagus River passed by over 3 million years ago, we will find the impressive rip that is Portas de Ródão, in the present riverbed. In the Portas de Ródão Natural Monument, one of its “doors” belongs to the Parish of S. Simão. This is the periclinal ending of the big sycline of Ródão, which unfolds in two mountainous limbs just north of Portela do Atalho. The Serra de São Miguel, testimony of a past ocean with almost 500 million years old, is dominated in some points by quartzitic blades of marine origin, with some fossils found in the past by the great Portuguese geologist and paleontologist, Nery Delgado. It can be said that the richness of this mountain range are the landscapes and the water that springs from the depths of the fractured quartzites. About the water, it is worth mentioning the source of Galiana, around Vinagra, the other village in the parish of S. Simão, which has supplied the entire municipality of Nisa. About the landscapes there are several viewpoints along the ridge, considered geosites of UNESCO Naturtejo Geopark, attesting the sudden transition between the granitic plain of Nisa and the shales deep shredded by the Ribeira de Nisa, which flows towards the Tagus. Starting at the Penouco de S. Miguel, the discovery makes through the pedestrian path that starts at Pé da Serra and climbs it. Then, we find the viewpoints of the mountain, which allows looking west the interesting Valley of Ribeira de Nisa, but also at the East of the Plateau to extend far beyond the border of the Sever. Finally, in Portela do Atalho, it is possible to enjoy the terraces of the Tejo river on the flat ground of Charneca de Ródão. S. Simão, two villages, 27, 83km2 of land, only 118 inhabitants. Land with at least 450 years of history, guards the traditional architecture of Alentejo with great harmony. In a region that lives of agriculture, nature tourism shows great potential. There are multiple paths that can make better use of the mountain and the Nisa riverside. The recovery of the Vala dos Mouros, which transferred water from that river to the great Roman mining of Conhal Arneiro, may create a spectacular variant to the Path of Santiago, whose great route is marked from Alpalhão to Corga. The springs of Galiana are very pleasant, which would give an excellent natural pool and leisure park, non-existent in the municipality. Finally, the Pé da Serra, meandering on silent streets and fresh mountain air, a place truly inviting the well-deserved rest, after wide journeys of extensive landscapes.

MONTHLY ACTIVITIES New proposals and partnerships of 2015/2016 Educational Programmes of the Geopark Naturtejo. Since it started in 2007, more than 25 500 students and teachers of Portuguese and foreign educational institutions, from pre-school to higher education and Senior Universities, participated in the Educational Programmes of the UNESCO Naturtejo Geopark. The Geopark organizes complementary activities to the curricula in various subjects, available to all levels of education. Over the years the Geopark has contributed to the optimization of the teaching-learning process in topics of disciplines such as the Study on the Environment, Natural Sciences, Biology, Geology, Nature Conservation, Marketing, Geography, Mathematics, Portuguese, Nature Tourism, Rural Development, History, Physical Education, Protected Areas, Land Use Planning, Geoconservation, among others. The proposed activities consist in the enhancement of a class at school (pre-field techniques classes), field trips visiting geomonuments (sometimes integrated into hiking routes) and the museological spaces, workshops, exhibitions and competitions. Some of these activities are integrated in the celebration of thematic days on the European Geoparks week – Landscape Festival and annual projects designed in conjunction with the schools in the Naturtejo territory. Regarding the field trips, the big news of the Year 2015/2016 is the proposal of two days field trip “a journey through the cycle of Rocks in the center of Portugal", as a result of a partnership established between the Naturtejo Geopark and Grutas da Moeda Caves, both partners in the Mines Route and Mining and Geological Points of Interest of Portugal. This activity includes visits to Grutas da Moeda Caves and to the Scientific and environmental Interpretation Center (CICA) in Fatima, the Fossils Route in Penha Garcia and Barrocais Route in Monsanto. This field trip is intended for students in the Secondary and High School education. Within the existing field trips, the field trip "Bio and Geodiversity of the Erges River Gorge - Segura" has a new option, which is the visit to Quinta do Valado, a natural cosmetic company with organic production, the "Aromas do Valado”. The route of the educational visits includes a guided tour to the mother garden, the agroindustrial pavilion, involving the participation of technicians responsible for each area of the company. In the path students learn about the use of plants in the process of product manufacture. This activity is intended for students from the preschool to high school Education. Detailed information about each of the activities of the Educational Programmes of the Naturtejo Geopark may be consulted on the microsite: “GEONATURescola” in www.geonaturescola.com.
