As a par t of my degree in industrial design, I star ted to explore the idea of what the future holds for protein consumption. This lead me to investigate insects as a form of protein, be that for human or animal consumption. On fur ther inspection of insect specimens, I became fascinated with the beauty and detail in these small creatures. This is when I decided to star t documenting the samples I had collected as a part of my research. My entry in to the world of entomology star ted when I began researching classic 18th century entomology. I could see the amazing detail, colours & textures which are only viewed under the microscope - I wanted others to see what I had seen. I decided to star t photographing insects in my student accommodation using a 3D printer, camera and tripod. I set the insect on the 3D printer bed and took between 100-300 images between each end of the insect’s focal points. Following this I blended them on Photoshop to create one image. I’m extremely excited to continue my work and help people view and interact with insect’s qualities from a new perspective.

This is my progress so far. I’m happy with the results but I can see many areas for improvement. Exploring such an unusual and unimaginably diverse species offers such exciting potential in photography with experimental lighting, video production and education of Entomology.
