2021/2022
President’s Spring letter Dear LISC friends It's been a while since the last Philatelist has been published. We are now preparing for the International Convention in Montreal. It is difficult that many Chapters have indicated not to go to Montreal, many still due to the Corona rules that still make traveling difficult. I will go to the Convention myself, but it is still very uncertain whether we will also be there with a booth, given the limited manpower available to man the booth. We are working hard on a pin and we are grateful to Howard Levenson for it, it will be a pin based on a stamp of 1967 Senegal. Please, place your orders as soon as possible as the final production order must be fixed. Furthermore Chapter 7 has issued a stamp based on the Montreal logo. Orders accepted. With regard to the administration our treasurer Ton van de Laak is working on getting the administration in order for the 2022/2023 Convention. Nevertheless, I would like to ask again from every Chapter to pass on the correct membership database to the secretary Even W Jones and to the treasurer Ton van der Laak as of July 1.2022. With regard to the Nominations 2022/2023 I would like to request you to pass on the candidates, as soon as possible. I express the wish that despite all setbacks such as Corona, we can find our way back up again in the fiscal year 2022/2023. I wish you all a prosperous collecting year. IN MEMORIAM It is with great sadness that I have to announce the passing away of two beloved friends and members of the Chapter 20, during the last days of March 2022.
Dr. Stelios Moutafis Stelios was a wellknown physician-director with a perfect scientific background to a central Clinic of Athens. He has served as president of “Asklipios Medical Specialty Lions Club” and District Committees Chairperson, as well as active LISC member having participated in Convention AGMs. Further, he was a distinguished person known for his calm character and high educational and social level, receiving always the public appreciation. The logo “We Serve” was his way of life in a full meaning of the word.
Kaity Rammou The skills of a social worker are communication, organization, active listening and patience. Kaity had an exemplary family and as social worker in profession had the right depiction of those advantages . She served as Lions Club president, District officer, NGOs and LISC member for a long period. She hardly worked with an incredible compassion for persons in need and for open social Structures. We regret the loss of our members PCC Spyros Seremidis, IPP
Stuart Gratrix It is with deep sorrow that I have to inform you of the death of LISC P.P. (2001/2002) Lion Stuart Gratrix MJF, following surgery for the removal of one of his kidneys at Blackpool (U.K) hospital. I have expressed our deepest sympathy to his wife Mavis and his two daughters. Please forward this email to the LISC Board members that I could not trace their email. P.P LISC David Jones, Life Director
Jan Snels Jan Snels was an excellent Lion for many years. Although he was getting older, he was always helping people. Met vriendelijke groeten, Ton van der Laak, RA

b lu C s p m a t S l a n io t a n r e t n I s n io L Chapter 12 The contributions of LISC Chapter 12 (Singapore) to our LIONS Movement, both domestic and international, has not abated since its inception in 2007. In Singapore, our Chapter’s long-term initiative and activity with one of the LBS’ Senior Activity Centre, involved active participation of the residents in monthly gatherings to cut, prepare used stamps from envelopes, sort them by thematic compositions, and finally packaging them for sale, with the revenue thereof obtained for charity. But it is in the international arena, that Chapter 12 has excelled tremendously, contributing continuously to the enhancement of the Lions International Stamp Club’s Objectives worldwide, and in particular, in the OSEAL and ISAAME Areas. Here, Chapter 12, is recognised through their members’ roles and offices as Past International Presidents of the Lions International Stamp Club, with an Incoming IP in 2023. These officers are elected annually at the LISC AGMs at LCI Conventions, and are endorsed by the various LISC Chapters / countries worldwide. Chapter 12 is proud to acknowledge the Contributions of our own LISC Leaders. PDG Isabel Cheong was the 2nd Woman LISC IP President, and the 1st Woman LISC IP in Asia, when she assumed this role in 2013 at LCI’s Hamburg Convention. In her quest to expand Chapter 12’s connectivity with other international members, she led a pre-Hamburg
Convention overland excursion with Dutch members, visiting Belgium and German Chapters. The fellowship and support along the way was a great experience, memorable in all aspects. It awakened the awareness of Singapore and OSEAL amongst the European members, and of the potential to expand LISC’s membership in our Constitutional Area. It was at the 41st ISAMME FORUM in Kathmandu, Nepal during PDG Isabel’s presidency that LISC’s membership increased. Accompanied by Lion Dianna Olivia Lim (Chapter 12), her husband and I, we were able to register and reinstate 38 Indian and Bangladeshi members, founded Chapter 18 (Nigeria) with 22 members, and planted membership roots with Algeria, DR Congo, Chad, Malawi and Maldives. To follow up with the new members, she attended the 42nd ISAMME Forum in Mauritius in 2015. With Dianna Olivia Lim, PDG Isabel also visited Guangzhou, that saw the founding of Chapter 17 and 19 in the PRC in May 2014. This was with the approval of the China Council of Lions Clubs. In the area of Administration, she initiated a review and implemented an update of the LISC Constitution & By-laws, and LISC Policy Manual, which led to recent final finetuning to ensure relevance. She also assisted in the LCI Centennial Committee on the designing of LCI’s Centennial Stamps for postal authorities to adopt when approached by local Chapters. Dianna Olivia Lim became the next LISC International President in 2018 in Las Vegas, the 3rd woman, and Chapter 12’s second, in the International Presidency. Ηer immense contributions were not only in local membership increase and local Chapter 12 projects with Lions Clubs, but with her visitations as a LISC leader to all the five Constitutional Areas to promote our activities in the OSEAL area at her own expense. She has one of the largest LION Stamp collections, and through her generosity,

Nearly 50% of LISC’s International Stamp and New Issue Service sales, are through her efforts. The following information received from a advertising brochure of the “Mystic Stamp Company” / America’s Leading Stamp Dealer, referred to a few of the most valuable stamps worldwide. On June 26th, 2021 a world record was established in the German auction House of Christophe Gaertner. The 1847 “Mauritius Ball Cover” sold for the highest price ever paid for a single philatelic item, in the incredible sum of $ 11.94 million (!). Only three precious covers are known and this was the only one in private hands. The two others reside in the Royal Philatelic Collection of Queen Elizabeth and in the British Library’s Tapling Collection. It also marked the first time a philatelic time had sold for over $ 10 million. The British Guiana commonly called the “1¢ Magenta”, is also one of the world’s most famous stamp with an original price $ 9.48 million. Only one of the 1856 stamp is known to survive and it has been called the “Holy Grail of Stamp Collecting”. The 1¢ Magenta was part of a series of three definitive stamps issued in 1856 and was intented for use on local newspaper.

The “Mauritius Bordeaux Cover” (original price $ 4 million) has been called the “Crown Jewel of Philately”, franked with the 1 – penny orange –red Mauritius #1. it is also carries the deep blue 2pence stamp, which was issued at the same time in 1847. Sweden’s “Yelloworange Treskilling” is the only one known to philately (original price 2.3 million). One of the first stamps issued by the country in 1855, it was produced in a set of 5 denominations. In 1858 Swedish currency changed from Skillings to Oren and with it, stamp denominations. The “Kingdom of Two Sicilies (Di Sicilia)” issued only 26 stamps in its short life. The original color of the 1859 / ½ grano stamp was orange (original price 2.6 million) and one only sheet was printed in blue. Today only two (½ grano stamp) are known, making them the rarest in the world. This beautiful 1847 “Rush Cover Strip”, is rightfully one of the most treasured in American philately (original price $ 1.9 million). The cover is franked with a horizontal strip of six 10 ¢ black US #2s, the largest –known multiple of this stamp on cover. The “1¢ Z Grill” is America’s rarest and most valuable stamp (original price 2.97 million). It is only 1¢ Z Grill available to collectors today with cancellation marks. Mystic Stamp Company

Lions Clubs International Honors Dr. Helena Ndume with Humanitarian Award Before she was known to the world as Dr. Helena Ndume, Chief of Ophthalmology at Windhoek Central Hospital in Namibia and partner with SEE International (Surgical Eye Expeditions International), she had a dream of helping those in need. In 1995, Dr. Ndume met with the founder of SEE International and together they worked toward reversing preventable blindness in Namibia. “For so many people, living with preventable blindness makes all the difference in whether or not they survive or starve”, Dr. Ndume said. Since then, Dr. Ndume has performed more than 35,000 eye surgeries free of charge in her home country of Namibia, Angola, and around the world. “We are truly honored to present this award to Dr. Ndume, whose work is changing lives and making a profound impact on the world”, said Lions international President Douglas X.
