SOUTH BROOKLYN’S COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER
A truck-free afternoon on Van Brunt Street by George Fiala
A
bout a month ago, Red Hook starting seeing signs featuring a blue Red Hook printed amidst water gushing upwards from an opened fire hydrant. The poster advertised something calle “Red Hook Walks,” to take place on July 18. The South Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation (SBIDC), who maintains a satellite office on Van Brunt Street, spearheaded the event, held as part of a citywide NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) program called New York Weekend Walks. DOT partners with local organizations to present what in essence is a street fair without the usual sausage and pepper vendors. “Each Weekend Walk is organized and hosted by a local partner, and features a number of activities, including music, arts and crafts, classes, and youth programming. Weekend Walks highlight local cultural institutions, non-profits, and economic resources,” according to the DOT website.
Walks are held throughout the city including the Grand Concourse, Arthur Avenue, Bedford Avenue, Grand Street, and the South Slope. The Red Hook version shut a vast expanse of Van Brunt from trucks, buses and cars, replacing them with grass, giant chess boards and two stages, one manned by Sunny’s bar, and the other by the Jalopy Theater. Restaurants were allowed to serve food as long as they took payment inside. The Good Fork set up a neat looking Tiki Bar in the lot next to their restaurant. Bait and Tackle and the Ice House set up chairs in front for an informal street convention. She-Weld actually did some heat welding at a workshop as a Mr. Softee truck watched and vended nearby. One highlight were the fish tacos, corn and hot dogs sold by the upscale seafood restaurant Kevins. This reporter calls it among the best hot dogs he’s ever eaten. The weather was perfect and nobody had a bad time!

Welcome to Red Hook’s Music and Art Festival by Kimberly Gail Price
L
ike many communities, Red Hook is defined by the people who have invested themselves and planted roots. In the case of Red Hook, which has faced threatened eminent domain in the 1960’s, a crack epidemic in the 1980’s, and a devastating hurricane just a few years ago, we have proven too strong to be dismayed by disaster or affliction. The lure of Red Hook is more than the view of the Statue of Liberty. The lure is from the commitment of the people behind the facade of the buildings one sees while passing through.
Celebrating Red Hook is a festival we created to celebrate the amazing and fascinating people behind the magic of this community. Their artistry is only one layer; buried just below the surface of the craftsmanship, I have felt strength, kindness and loyalty. The draw of Red Hook is the humanity of its people. Red Hookers include people from all steps of the economic ladder. The Red Hook Houses ensure that those near the bottom enjoy the neighborhood as much as the new gentrifiers do. All are welcome in all parts of the neighborhood. They inspire each Producer Kimberly Gail Price enjoying last years festival

Billion Oyster Project
Billion Oyster Project is an ecosystem restoration and education project aimed at restoring one billion live oysters to New York Harbor and engaging hundreds of thousands of school children through restoration based STEM education programs. Students at New York Harbor School have been growing and restoring oysters in New York Harbor for the last six years. They have learned to SCUBA dive safely, raise oyster larvae, operate and maintain vessels, build and operate commercial-scaled oyster nurseries, design underwater monitoring equipment and conduct long-term authentic research projects all in the murky, contaminated, fast moving waters of one of the busiest ports in the country. Together and with the help of many partners these students have restored over eleven million oysters. Thirty-six public schools have partnered with the project to provide authentic, place-based science and math lessons through the lens of oyster restoration. Each year, thousands of students participate in these learning opportunities.

Celebrating Red Hook Special Edition 2015
EDITORIAL:
T
FESTIVAL TIME!
he genesis of our Celebrating Red Hook day occurred a few years ago when Open House/ NY held a special Red Hook edition. What Open House does is get buildings normally closed to the public to open for a day where visitors can see for themselves what goes on behind the front doors. We were very impressed at the range of creativity of the many businesses that were showcased that day. Tourists love to look at the Civil War era warehouse buildings that line our waterfront. But workers know that there is a tremendous amount
LETTER: Local Issues
The nursing home issue certainly requires neighborhood input. A project of that scale in our community would have far reaching consequences, not the least of which would be emergency services, given the facility will be built on a flood plain. I am more concerned about the helicopter issue. I am employed in the tourism and hospitality industry and I am a Red Hook resident. I hear the same flights others are complaining about. A bill is being proposed to ban the sightseeing flights. That will cost jobs. Plain and simple. The loss of the
of modern history created inside. That day we saw architects not only designing projects, but building out some of them using the large spaces (and in many cases recycled tools) that the O’Connell organization has allowed to become business incubators due to their supportive rental arrangements. We saw ironworkers and upholsters and much more. We decided to offer these artisans a day in the sun in a fun atmosphere complete with music and Red Hook food. IKEA generously partnered with us and thus this annual Erie Basin event was born! Come join us on the 25th and for lots of Red Hook love! flights will also deprive the East River Heliport its primary source of revenue, rental from the tour companies. Who will pay for that facility? It has been a vital resource during 9/11 and Sandy. The site is used for most Presidential landings and special events. A change of flight path, perhaps out over Governors Island and the Harbor, may quiet some Red Hook complaints. I can’t take Battery Park complaints too seriously since that group wants to quiet all the ferry traffic. Get over it, BPC, you moved to the waterfront! Lets explore some options for the helicopters before causing job losses in a difficult financial climate. - Patrick

FAMILY DAY
Saturday, August 15, Noon - 6 pm
Center, NYPD 76th Precinct, the NYDP PSA 1, the NYPD Explorers Program, the NYPD Auxiliary Police, the Kings County District Attorney Kenneth Thompson, the New York State Office of Court Administration, and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.
Lillie Marshall informs us that this year’s Red Hook West Family Day will return to the beautifully refurbished Coffey Park. All are invited to enjoy rides, popcorn, cotton candy, back to school supplies for all plus music by DJ Young A Nut. This is another
chance for all Red Hookers to get out and meet each other. There will be some booths manned by local institutions, and lots of outdoor barbecuing. Fun for all is promised by Red Hook West TA President Lillie Marshall.
OLD TIMERS WEEKEND August 7-9
This year’s Old Timer’s events, returning to Coffey Park, promises to be one of the best year. The organizers, led by Ray Hall, have been working for months to prepare a fun-packed weekend. People who grew up in the Red Hook Houses return from points all over the country and the world for this reunion. The festivities begin Friday at 11 am with a Senior Soiree at the Miccio Center. Then, from 6 to 11 pm there will be a Meet and Greet featuring music by DJ Scissorhands at Wine Park, at Mill and Henry. Things move to the new Coffey Park on Saturday with a cookout from 1 4 pm. Then, at 9 pm, the Committee has arranged for a nighttime boat ride in the NY Harbor.
Of course, the main event is always saved for Sunday. All kinds of great music is planned, including Pee Wee’s R&B band, Motown, Salsa and Latin. There will be a dedication in memory of S.I.P., vendors selling memorabilia, and cookouts all over the park. An all-star softball game will be taking place during the day. As we wrote last year: The feeling is very much like a college reunion. Happily surprised people are seen hugging all day as old friends and neighbors find each other and catch up. “You lived on the first floor at 21 Mill!” “Last time I saw you you were a little girl!,” and things like that.” Old Timer’s Day is a great opportunity to meet those who paved the way for today’s thriving Red Hook community.
RED HOOK FIELD DAY Saturday, August 22, 9 am - 4 pm This is a brand new event that rounds out the month. It will take place at the Red Hook Stadium, part of the ballfields, and is open to all children ages 5 to 16. It will be a day out in the field! Warm-Up Exercises, Relay Races, Potato Sack Races, Obstacle Courses, Jump Rope, Lunch, School Supplies, Prizes & More!! For more information see http://www.tactsonline.org/events.html
