George Green’s School
Principal’s Welcome
We have had a wonderful two weeks back at school since the New Year! Last term, we spent a lot of time working on the students’ behaviour and putting in place a few new rules as well as reinforcing existing rules. The hard work of the staff seems to be having an effect. We have had a marked reduction in incidents in lessons and around the building. I am so pleased with all the students who seemed to have made a resolution to be the best they can be. This is an important term for Year 11 and Year 13 in particular. This is the last chance they will get to make sure they get the best possible grades in the summer examinations. Please encourage your sons and daughters to keep working hard, or in some cases, start working hard! They can still make a difference to the final outcome with hard work. We had a wonderful event last Friday morning with a special assembly for Year 11. We decided to give them some motivation to step up their efforts by making the return of their mock exam results seem like the real thing. We put their mock results in an envelope and they all opened them together in assembly. What struck me was how mature and sensible they all were. Some were smiling with good results and some were clearly a little disappointed. However, whatever their news, they all took on board what they must now do to achieve great results next time they open an envelope. We will work very hard with them to ensure they get what they all deserve. Last Friday, we also welcomed three of our ex-students who are now at university. They came especially to talk to our Year 11 students about the value of doing the IB in the sixth form. Yusuf Khan, Russell Akbar & Eloise Rahman, who were all successful IB graduates, spoke about their IB journey, and how it changed their lives and enabled them to go to top Universities around the UK. Their message? Study the IB or IBCC and George Green’s 6th form is the place to study. Jill Baker Russell Akbar ex George Green’s IB student

COMPUTING CORNER This is??? 1. Mr Remita getting ready to take a bath 2. Mr Currie’s night wear to go to bed 3. A character in a very famous movie If you have answered 1 do not come close to me ever again, even with dark chocolate. If you have answered 2, I’ll let you deal with Mr Currie. If you have answered 3, you are one of the clever people who tried to understand how they manage to have the character Gollum in Lord of the Rings so life like. This is a fantastic suit, full of motion sensors. Motion sensors are clever gimmicks that are measuring and giving to a computer your position in space. It allows to create a virtual skeleton on the screen that you could use in any film. The more sensors you have, the more detailed your skeleton will be. Well, you must realise that a lot of computing techniques are used in most of the films, drama productions, animation movies, video clips you are watching every day. You might want a career in these. To do so you would need to know a bit more about computers and how to program them.

Fantastic Public Service
My name is James Robertson and I first joined St John’s Ambulance as a cadet four years ago, I wanted to see if I had the ability to carry out first aid. Learning first aid has been a really exciting thing for me; I get to put my knowledge to practise at the many venues/ events we travel to, this year we have attended many premier league football matches ie: Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea and QPR to name but a few. When I first discovered St John’s Ambulance, I saw their motto, ‘’A difference between a life lost and a life saved’’: this has made me grow in confidence myself , knowing that I can save lives. With the knowledge I have built up I was able recently to look after my poorly grandad who became very ill after having surgery. Since being involved in first aid I have managed to donate 150 hours to the service aiding the general public at some famous events. I will be taking my cadet leadership course and signing up for my clinical course. If I pass the leadership course I will become a non-commissioned officer allowing me to lead and teach other cadets. Wish me luck. My Name is Alex Robinson and I am a qualified first aider for St John’s Ambulance. When I was 11, I joined the service and this has changed my life. I have been attending events including the London Marathon and premier football matches and also the lower leagues. I have achieved 130 hours and have attending more than a 1000 first aid calls. I have learnt that there is a difference between “a life lost and a life saved”. This February I will be taking my cadet leadership course to maintain the role of cadet leader in my division.
Year 7 Form of the week This week’s form of the week is 7 Orang-utan. 7O were top of the attendance table by a long way this week. A great achievement. Well Done 7O! Year 7 Attendance A bit of a disappointing start to attendance this week. We want as a minimum 95% ideal we’d be on 97% as a year group. However there was some confusion on the first day and a quick look at this week’s attendance so far shows that we are already doing much better. On a more positive note 7O hit attendance out of the park this week with an incredible 98.4%. Remember if a form group has any 2 weeks during a half term with 100% attendance they get a non-school uniform pass. Well Done 7O! Attendance cup 1st 7O 98.4%,
2nd 7S 95.42%,
3rd 7P 94.88%
Year 7 attendance by term 96.65% Autumn 1 attendance 95.4% Autumn 2 attendance Year 7 attendance Last week 92.93% 6/01/2014 – 10/01/2014

IB12 UCL Residential
The residential trip was at Cumberland Lodge with UEL undergraduates. The people that went to the residential were myself, Hani, Alison, Sheyhan, Ashia, Halima and other students from the 3 different campus’ at Cambridge Heath 6th form . In the 3 days we spent at Cumberland Lodge we were given a taste of life at university. We talked about how to make our university applications and personal statements standout. We took part in a workshop on Ethics of Punishment and career planning. We attended lectures on geopolitics, psychology, journalism and geography. These helped us gain an understanding of studying at universities, these lectures were given by specialists in their fields from different universities and they answered questions on how they ended up where they were. Clean up time! As part of their ASDAN life skills course FL1 have been learning about their local environment. We have been identifying where the environment has not been protected and discussing the impact of this on others. To help protect our school environment FL1 did a litter clean up after break of the school grounds. We found lots of sweet wrappers, straws and empty bottles especially underneath the T Block! Please help to keep our school clean! Miss Moore
