ne of my favorite things about Christmastime is the sparkliness – not a real word but you know what I mean. Bright strings of lights everywhere, decorations that
shimmer, bedazzled “ugly” sweaters and foil embossed cards, but most importantly, the feeling about town – Knoxvillians seem to sparkle and shine with cheerfulness at the holidays. Drive by the old Keener Lighting building at the three way intersection of Broadway, W. Jackson Avenue and World’s Fair Park Drive and see Glitterville Studios – a magnificent example of sparkliness! Rockwood native Stephen Brown opened his studio in September. Read his story and more about Glitterville Studios on page 28 and see how it twinkles in our holiday fashion spread (pages 22 to 48). more sparkle during this season of cheer – recipes for an easy classic and a gluten free option, as well as expertly iced sugar cookies and locally made chocolates can be found on pages 18-19 (go to knoxvillestyle.com for even more). And don’t forget the bubbly! A champagne guide from luxury bottles to reasonably priced options starts on page 52. Glow with Gilded Nudes
Think nude, but expensive! This Glowing Gold and Bronze technique is super easy and works on just about anyone! Apply a matte tan shadow to your eyelids and creases using a shadow brush, then apply the same shadow under your eye using a flat detail eyeliner brush. Next, use your fingertips to tap on a glowing gold shade to your entire eyelid just below the crease line. Use a smoky eyeliner to line your upper lids. Smudge for a sexy effect, or draw on wings for a more dramatic look. Lightly sweep a bronzing blush onto cheeks, TIP and finish with a warm For more chestnut lip. For an added mature eyes, glow, dab a bit of gold lip skip the shimmer gloss onto the center of shadows and use your lips. warm matte tones instead.
WINTER SKIN CARE
As the seasons change, so do our skin care needs. With summer humidity, most just use a light moisturizer with sunscreen. Going into winter we need to protect our delicate skin from the environmental ravages of artificial air and blown in heat. One of the best ways to do this is to double down and use both a daytime moisturizer and a night crème. Choose products that match your skin type. For those with oily skin, it’s still important to hydrate! For those prone to dry flaky skin, use an emollient crème. A moisturizer with Sodium Hyaluronate works wonders for all skin types. This miracle ingredient penetrates the skin and holds onto a 1000% of its molecular weight! So skin not only gets moisturized but fine lines and wrinkles plump up, resulting in a fresh, healthy glow.
COPPER TONES
Makeup Carmen Lopez for Susan Bourdeau Cosmetics
Shimmery nude lips, bronzed and highlighted cheeks, and a warm, shimmery copper shadow rimming the upper and lower lids, give you a soft and flattering glow that will make you look rested and refreshed. For a super pigmented look really pack the shadow on, applying a TIP heavy coat of metallic copper Copper eyeon the entire lid. For someshadow is super thing subtle, try dusting your flattering on all skin lids with copper shadow and tones, and is great to make hazel and apply a bit under the eye with blue eyes really a flat liner brush.

ICE PRINCESS
Channel your inner ice princess and swipe your lids with shimmering silver shadow. Paired with nude lips and dewy skin, this is a great holiday look that you can literally wear year-round. Apply a nude base matte shadow close to your skin color to the entire lid. Sweep a light application of silver shadow on lower lids, and then, using a flat liner brush, heavily line your upper and lower lids with silver shadow, or for something more dramatic, use a metallic gunmetal grey shadow. Use an eyeliner sealer with your shadow to make your liner look last all day and night. Finish with navy mascara for an absolutely gorgeous look!
CRANBERRY LIPS

This Holiday Season try something different on your lips. Instead of TIP the same red lipstick try a berry Don’t just outline shade. I love berry! The right your lips. Fill in your enberry lipstick will make your tire lips with your lipliner. teeth look whiter and your This will make your lipstick face more awake, and who stay on much longer for can’t use that around the those long holiday holidays? parties Available in an endless range of shades from pale and subtle, to deep and dramatic, there is a berry lipstick that’s perfect for you. Be sure to do some prep work to make sure your lip color stays in place. Apply a primer to your lips to keep the deep hues from feathering or bleeding, and apply a soft dusting of translucent powder to the first coat of lipstick to help keep it in place. If you have pink undertones you should wear a berry with blue undertones such as deep plum, wines and oxblood shades. If you have yellow undertones in your skin you should wear berry lipsticks that have orange undertones such as burgundy, deep red and maroon shades. People with olive-colored skin should opt for hues with a slightly purple tone as too much red can give your skin a greenish cast.
HOW TO HAVE YOUR OWN AT-HOME SPA DAY WELL BEING FOR THE HOLIDAYS
O
n airplanes we’re told to put our oxygen mask on first. Prioritize yourself! If you pass out while trying to help others you’re of help to no one. And, it’s the same principle for surviving the holidays. Having a self-care “to-do” list is the best way to alleviate holiday stress. By working the list, I take care of myself and my skin, and stay sane enough to help others in my family, and not kill them instead. No one wants to be in prison for Christmas. Stress is a real factor in how your skin looks, as it causes a chemical response in your body that makes your skin more sensitive and reactive. It can also make existing skin problems harder to heal. Stress causes your body to make the hormone cortisol. This hormone is responsible for holding on to tummy fat, as well as excess oil production in your skin. Oily skin is more prone to breakouts and acne. Stress can aggravate psoriasis, rosacea, and eczema, as well as hives, rashes and a fever blister flare-up. These breakouts cause us to feel bad about our appearance, causing yet more stress. It’s really just a vicious cycle! Break the cycle by making the time to work your self-care “to-do” list. Take a deep breath and unwind with these guaranteed stress relievers!
Scrub Your Stress Away Dry, flaky, broken out skin can cause stress on its own! No one wants flat, dull skin, especially during all those holiday events. For an at home spa treatment, try exfoliating with a gentle scrub. Gently massage the scrub onto your skin with light, circular motions to unclog your pores, prevent breakouts, and even out skin tone. A gentle scrub used twice a week will not only keep your skin looking fresh and smooth, but also boosts circulation and lymphatic drainage, as well as stimulating collagen synthesis This will improve your skin’s texture and integrity, making it look fresh, tight and plump. Who doesn’t want that?
Apply a face mask You only need 10 minutes to apply a deep-cleansing charcoal mask to restore your skin’s natural radiance! By eliminating toxins and impurities, Thermal charcoal energizes your complexion to reveal a healthy, youthful glow. The charcoal Glow Mask improves your skin’s texture and elasticity, smooths wrinkles, and calms skin, while glycerin provides intense hydration, enhances moisture retention and softens your skin. Apply a generous amount to your dry face, being careful to avoid the immediate eye area. Leave on for 5 minutes, then wet hands and massage into skin to activate. Leave on another 5 minutes then remove. I like to place a warm, wet face cloth over my entire face, to soak the mask off. Then rinse well with warm water. Your skin will be soft, supple and glowing!
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate Our skin is the largest organ of our bodies, and can show stress in many different ways. When our body feels stress, we experience a spike in adrenaline and cortisol. An increase in adrenaline causes us to sweat more, which can cause skin to become dehydrated. If you aren’t drinking enough water, your skin is going to dry out. To combat the loss of moisture in your skin due to holiday stress, make sure you cleanse your face every day and use a hydrating moisturizer both morning and night. For daytime, use an intensive daily moisturizer with sodium hyaluronate, pro vitamin B, panthenol and vitamin C to hydrate and soften, as well as protecting from the environment. For evening, use a night cream containing retinol, phosholipids and triglycerides to soothe skin and boost collagen. This will ensure skin is hydrated and has an even complexion. It also restores elasticity while nourishing skin, which will prevent tissue damage. Hydration is key!

Roll Your Way To Better Looking Skin Have you tried Jade Rolling? This incredibly relaxing form of self-care started off in the natural beauty world, and for good reason. The healing power of this precious stone aids in lymphatic drainage, smooths fine lines and reduces puffiness. It is one of my go-to treatments when I’ve overdone-it, and let’s face it, during the holidays we all tend to over-do-it a bit. First, apply a serum designed for your skin type. The serum works as a guard against friction, and as a bonus, the Jade Roller helps the serum penetrate more deeply into you skin than when you use your serum on its own. I prefer something with hyaluronic acid and bio-peptides to plump up my skin and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The Jade Roller has two ends; one is larger than the other. Use the larger end of the roller first. Start with your clavicle (collarbone) and move in a side-to-side direction. Next use sweeping up and down motions on your neck. Follow this with your jawline; switch to a back-and-forth roll that starts at the center of the chin and goes toward your ear, all the way up to your cheekbone. On your forehead repeat the vertical roll, starting from the middle of your face and moving toward the temple. Flip your Jade Roller, and using the smaller attachment roll once down the nose. Continue to the under-eye area and roll towards the bridge of your nose. Finally, massage the lips in a horizontal motion. This helps plump your lips and diminishes any fine lines you may have in that area. This may seem like a lot of work, but once you get used to it, the entire process will only take a few minutes, and the benefits of lymphatic drainage will leave your skin depuffed and glowing!
Soak Away Your Cares! A soak in a warm bath is my favorite self-care indulgence! I love to break out moisturizing bath bombs or bath melts, turn down the lights, and light a scented candle. Bath bombs contain ingredients that promote healing, like Shea butter, essential oils and clays, and can improve a number of skin conditions such as itchy, dry skin, and blemishes. Essential oils rejuvenate and nourish the body with lush aromatherapy, easing muscle tension and melting away stress as you breathe in a soothing scent, reducing stress and anxiety in a form that’s easy and fun to use.

The Eyes Have It Jeepers, my peepers! Ever wake up with tired, puffy, swollen eyes and wonder just what happened while you were sleeping? Maybe your holiday to-do list is weighing on your mind, keeping you from getting enough beauty sleep. Or maybe you had too much sugar last night? This can cause fluid to pool below your lower eyelid area, leaving you a puffy mess in the morning. To help repair and replenish skin, try an eye crème with tetrapeptide 5. This revolutionary ingredient works on multiple pathways to depuff, smooth, brighten and improve elasticity around the eyes. It fights puffy eyebags by working to improve the vascular system and strengthen the skin under the eyes to prevent fluid accumulation. Using an eye cream with tetrapeptide 5 and dermal fillers such as sodium hyaluronate will restore skin volume and smooth wrinkles. One which also contains pearl extracts and caffeine will minimize the appearance of fine lines and stimulate micro-circulation. Apply a small amount morning and night for puff free peepers!

ask CARRIE M. “I don’t do fashion. I am fashion.” -Coco Chanel
How can I look my best when posing for pictures this holiday season? It all starts with your outfit. Plan your attire to ensure you’re confident and carefree with your chosen garb, making sure to include your hair in this dress rehearsal. When the flash goes off, put your body into action: squeeze your shoulder blades together and elongate your neck. Avoid standing with your arms flat at your sides; even the most buff guns will appear larger when pressed against the body. Instead, choose your angle, from a slight elbow bend to a confident hand at your waist. With pants, stand with legs slightly apart in a “v”, leaning into one leg. With a skirt or dress, pivot and tuck one heel into the side of the opposite foot. Check the Internet for tons of tips on posing prettily such as 7 Posing Techniques for Non-Models by professional photographer Ben Lucas, and How to Pose in Photos by Sorrelle Amore. What’s the best jean length to wear with booties? Ankle-high boots are here to stay, and irresistible in a plethora of styles. Although easier to fit and more season-friendly than their big sister knee-high boots, they can be complicated when styling. The key to the perfect jean/bootie combination is the proportions surrounding your pant, ankle, and shoe. Assess each outfit and experiment with styling, creating a pant length that shows a bit of ankle and all of the boot. Try a messy, rolled small cuff, a 1” cuff neatly turned up once, or a 2”-3” cuff with two turns of the fabric. Have an old pair of jeans that you’re ready to freshen up? Trim to the perfect length to show off the boot and leave unhemmed. Haven’t time for a major style revolution? Wear with full-length pants. Avoid showing your ankles and treat the boot like a normal shoe, making sure only the toe and heel are peeking out to say hello. Sweaters make me look and feel fat. How can I stay warm but still be cute? Beloved Fair Isle and Irish Knit sweaters bring to mind ski trips and hot cocoa, but don’t perform quite as well on the everyday stage. Search for a less bulky, but still toasty, yarn instead. Crew- and turtleneck sweaters in featherweight Merino wool are available from J. Crew, Banana Republic, Orvis and Land’s

End. Elegant Merino can be worn alone or layered under blazers, scarves, or even sleeveless dresses as the days grow colder. Another coveted option is cashmere. This lightweight wool, shorn from cashmere or pashmina goats, provides warmth and baby-softness. Stock up during end-of-season sales (keep an eye on Talbots) or head to your local vintage store for unique beaded or embroidered cardigan styles. Both cashmere and Merino are washable and long-lasting. Hand-wash, or place in a lingerie bag on the gentle cycle with Woolite or another mild detergent such as Wool & Cashmere Shampoo by The Laundress. Spread on a terry towel upon a flat surface and leave to dry naturally. Why do I look in my closet and think, “I have nothing to wear”? Because you may not! Clothes reside in our closets that no longer fit, need repairs, or are in such a wide array of colors that they become confusing when trying to create outfits. Still others really aren’t our taste, kindly gifted to us by loved ones. Do yourself a favor and set aside time to review your wardrobe. Try on those suspicious pants and acknowledge once and for all they might be a tad too tight. Rescue the sweater with the missing button and make it whole again by taking it for repairs, or sewing it yourself. Store the “thought that counts” gifts in another area of your house. And narrow down your favorite colors, pinkie promising to stick to those colors with future clothing acquisitions. Don’t fear having less in your closet. “Less” also means “less confusion”, and “less decisions to make every morning.” Less is indeed more!

15 Ways to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain Photo by Jessi Ringer Photography
A
voiding the weight gain that often occurs between Halloween and New Year’s can be a struggle. Here are 15 helpful tips to keep you on target. Weigh yourself twice a week – By weighing yourself on Friday and Monday, it will help you stay on track and accountable to yourself and to avoid binging on the weekends at holiday parties.
Start your day off with a “bang” and EXERCISE – By exercising in the morning and starting your metabolism in full gear, you are more likely to stay on target and eat well throughout the day. Be picky, picky, picky – Don’t feel guilty and fill your plate with a lot of food at holiday parties that you don’t like because you don’t want to be “rude”. Pick and choose what you want on your plate. If you don’t put it on your plate, you won’t eat it! Just say no! – I know it’s hard to avoid the cookies, desserts and all of the topping and fixings, but pick and choose and try to avoid a lot of the extras. Avoid banking calories – A lot of people have told me that they don’t eat all day in order to eat a lot at one meal. DO NOT DO THIS! You will be absolutely starving when you “feast” and you will over indulge and eat way too much because you are so hungry. Eat right throughout the day. Concentrate on your workouts – Don’t skip your workouts and start back up in January. Stay consistent, and stay diligent and make your workouts even better and stronger and try to do something new during this time. Studies show that if you workout, you will be more likely to stay on track with your eating throughout the day. Don’t swear off dessert – I know you will love me for saying this, but you can have a little something to “treat” yourself. Notice I said “treat”. Don’t tell yourself that you will never have a dessert, because you will be more than likely to have a lot of one dessert and binge.
14 KNOXVILLE STYLE MAGAZINE
Avoid morning after food – Once you are done with your party and have had your “cheat” meal, get a lot of the bad foods out of the house, so you don’t have the urge to pick on them for three days after the actual holiday party. Drum up some willpower – No one ever said it was easy, but the more that you can tell yourself “no” the stronger you will be for the next round of drinks or bad foods. Cut back on Diet Soda – Drink more water!! Enough said! Drink more water! Brew up a pot of hot tea – Hot tea will help you relieve stress and will curb your appetite. Chew Slowly – You are way more likely to eat less food if you put down your fork in between bites and take your time in eating your meal. Keep calm and kick cravings – A lot of people get very stressed during the holidays and then “fall off the wagon” and give in to temptations. Try to avoid the stress as much as possible to kick off the cravings. Going on a walk or meeting a friend to walk is another way to keep yourself calm and help you avoid the typical holiday stress. Get some sleep – Studies have shown that if you get between 7-8 MOLLY BROWN-BOULAY PHOTOGRAPHY hours of sleep, you are less likely to give into indulgences. Create a new family traditions – That don’t require baking cookies or brownies. Go on a family hike or walk. Remove yourself from the distractions and phones and just enjoy time with your family that is not centered around food. Don’t let winter wreck your hair! By Shane Archer
T
he winter months can be very hard on those precious locks. Cold, dry air and harsh weather dehydrate your hair and make it more prone to breakage. If your hair feels dry and brittle in the warmer months you are even more susceptible to serious wintertime breakage. These crazy arctic blasts are especially rough on color-treated hair, sucking the vibrancy and shine right away. So, during the colder months we tell our guests how important products become. Healthy summer hair starts in the winter (wink wink). But, let’s be honest, products are always important – what you put on your hair is just as important as what you put on your body. And, the products you use have a direct correlation to how your color will process and how long it will last (not to mention the health and strength of your hair). So what products do we recommend to protect those tresses? Here are 4 must-haves this holiday season: Moi Moi Hair Masque Deep moisture therapy formula ideal for extremely dry hair. Delivers abundant moisture to even the most dehydrated strands. Great for all
hair types; will not weigh hair down. Penetrates completely and leaves no residue or buildup. Blue Moisture Pearls instantly release concentrated hydrators. Noni Fruit Leave In Conditioner Spray-in conditioner provides lightweight hydration. Instantly moisturizes, heals & detangles. Penetrates quickly & completely. Hawaiian Noni Fruit nourishes and leaves a spectacular shine. Tamanu Cream Shampoo Daily shampoo rehydrates dry, depleted hair without adding weight. Contains Tahitian Tamanu Nut Oil for ideal moisturization. Cleanses gently without stripping natural oils and nutrients. Sulfate-free and extra gentle, leaves hair clean and silkysoft. Polynesian Gugo Bark provides a rich, creamy lather. Kukui Nut Conditioner Daily conditioner hydrates without weighing hair down. Contains natural Hawaiian Kukui Nut Oil prized for its moisturizing abilities. Provides abundant moisture and exceptional shine. Lightweight formula seals-in moisture for lasting softness.

I’m having trouble sleeping. What can I do? Most people at some point in their life, have trouble sleeping. Think about what is going on in your life. Are you stressed about something? Major changes in life can certainly be the cause of insomnia. Things we can do for ourselves are fairly easy and are the very things we give up first – our healthy whole food diet and exercise routines. Don’t let these slide! Exercising releases hormones that work just as well as an anti-depressant. Just be sure you workout early in the day so you don’t activate your body and worsen the sleeping problem. You can also try several supplements. Valerian root 300600mg, 1-2 hours prior to going to bed, may help relax you and ease into sleep. Magnesium 400mg is also a nice aid for sleep. (Watch for any diarrhea and some people are sensitive to this side effect!) You can also give Melatonin 3-5mg a try. Sometimes, a controlled release version is nice to help keep you sleeping thru the entire night. Most adults need 7-8hrs of sleep a night to recharge, heal and keep their mental acuity. Don’t underestimate how important this part of your day is! Be sure to check with your personal physician to be sure any supplements don’t negatively interact with what you are already taking. What can I do to lower my cholesterol if I don’t want to take a statin? This is a question I address nearly daily. The answer is different for each person depending on their risk. Your doctor has access to several risk calculators to

determine your 10year heart risk, and depending on that percentage, you and your doctor can decide what’s right for you. The factors that go into deciding risk are gender, age, blood pressure, smoking history, cholesterol level, diabetes history, and depending on the calculator family history. Always the backbone of therapy is a healthy diet and exercise. No pill will be a substitute for these – ever. There are patients that I strongly recommend they take statin medications. We have excellent data that we can reduce your risk by 30% with statins. Every medication comes with its own downfalls, but certainly, statin medications have drastically impacted the morbidity of heart events. Other patients we discuss increased fiber intake (40-50g/day), omega 3 (3-4g/day), or red yeast rice (1500-5000mg/day). Be sure you are getting a pharmaceutical grade supplement so you can be sure you are getting quality product. Be sure to check with your doctor about your heart risk and have that detailed discussion! It’s really eye-opening and may be just the thing you need to keep motivated this holiday season to avoid most of the indulgent foods.

Another thing to think about is your level of vitamin D. It can contribute to your level of fatigue and achiness. May be a good thing to discuss with your doctor and replace if you need more. Being true with my theme this time…be sure to exercise and have a healthy diet! (I know…much easier said than done, but it is the honest truth.) If these lifestyle options are not helping with maintaining your mood, we can help with medications – go talk with your doctor!

Made with natural peanut butter and coconut sugar, the Dark Chocolate Salted Peanut Butter Cookie is free of gluten and refined sugar and only has six ingredients! Baking and decorating sugar cookies does double duty as a fun family activity which results in adorably shareable treats. However, this holiday staple can be time consuming and messy.

Dark Chocolate Salted Peanut Butter Cookies (Gluten Free) 2 cups coconut sugar (lightly packed ) 2 eggs 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon salt 16 ounces creamy peanut butter 1 cup chocolate chips Directions: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. In a medium bowl, combine the coconut sugar and eggs and whisk until smooth. Whisk in the vanilla and salt until blended. Add the peanut butter and whisk until the dough is smooth and the peanut butter has completely blended into the batter (you might need to switch to a big spoon toward the end, which you’ll need for mixing in the chocolate chips anyway). Add the chocolate chips and stir until the chocolate chips are evenly incorporated. For cookies that stay perfectly mounded, chill the dough for 15 minutes before proceeding. Use a cookie dough scoop or two spoons to scoop heaping tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving 1 to 2 inches of space around each one. Chill any remaining dough while you bake the first batch. Bake until the cookies are golden at the edges but still just a little underdone in the center, 11 to 13 minutes. Let the cookies rest on the hot baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring them with a metal spatula to a cooling rack to cool completely. Repeat with the remaining dough.

s usual, to write this article, I interviewed foreigners that live in “Knox Vegas,” and this time, I also interviewed an individual from out of state that moved to Knoxville to open his business. Opening a business is never easy, but in Knoxville, entrepreneurs can expect a supportive environment. All my interviewees agreed: it’s so easy to do business with Knoxvillians. “We moved about a year ago from New York,” Dion Martorell, owner of Four Seasons Fireplace and Chimney said. “My favorite things about Knoxville are the friendly people, the Smokies being so close, and the ease of doing business. Not to mention the low taxes.” With no state income tax, Tennessee’s tax system is an incentive for many individuals to set up shop. Wanda Malhotra moved from Sao Paulo, Brazil, to open a vegan and organic skincare company named Root Journey. “Knoxville has a friendly environment for women and minority owned businesses,” Malhotra said. “The city offers great entrepreneurship programs, and ongoing educational programs, as well as reasonable costs. The community incentivizes diversity, is open to new ideas, products, and services.” One of the most interesting entrepreneurship programs in the Knox area is called Score: a group of volunteers with ownership or management experience serving the small business community by providing free consulting, education and mentoring.

Geography is destiny: Knoxville’s location is amazing, interstates I-81, I-40 and I-75 all connect in the city, so you really can get anywhere from here. Commercial establishments are booming. Alcoa is 12 miles south of Knoxville and has 10 businesses per 100 residents. It was raked by Nerdwallet the best place to do business in the state of Tennessee. Commercial establishments keep getting more and more customers and with that comes diversity. “I love that Knoxville is an international town,” Vilmar Zenzen, owner of the restaurant Brazeiros said. “We have customers from many places around the world.” Successful businesses bring real estate-friendly markets: Farragut was considered top three vibrant real estate-friendly markets by HomeUnion investment platform. Violent crime rates are below the national average, while median home values are higher than the national average. Knoxville has everything to be “a city of the future.” Businesses are attracted not only by the location, but also by the city’s hilly landscape, climate, supportive environment and skilled labor. And, that’s why there are so many new businesses popping in “Knox Vegas,” we have it all! We must improve in many ways including public transportation, but our infrastructure and technology will help pave the way to improve the quality of life for our citizens. If you are thinking about opening your business in “Knox Vegas” – don’t hesitate to contact me. I can help you find the perfect property to start the business of your dreams.
Barbara is with Exit Real Estate Professionals Network and says, “Besides its beauty, safety, and opportunities, Knoxville is very affordable which makes it possible for us foreigners to buy a house. I am a realtor and want to help. Call me at (865) 383-3948.”

Glitter. Lots and lots of glitter. Stephen Brown’s Glitterville Studios is the most magical – glitter filled – place in Knoxville. Brown, Rockwood native, started Glitterville as an online craft business and just recently opened his first storefront in downtown Knoxville. Brown attended the University of Tennessee, where he received a degree in costume design. While working on the “WiseGirls” set with Mariah Carey, he began crafting and selling ornaments. And they were a hit! Brown’s creations started getting noticed by national websites, magazines such as Country Living and later making the list of Oprah’s Favorite Things! Brown handmakes every prototype that he sells. After he creates the first piece, it is produced by his team. His products include ornaments, cake toppers, favor boxes, glasses and household items – and of course, lots of glitter.

iver & Rail Theatre Company was founded in 2015 in Knoxville, Tennessee. We are a professional, non-profit theatre company producing relevant stories for diverse audiences. Through the power and beauty of theatre, we seek to unite people from all backgrounds to experience and participate in stories that embody our shared humanity. Our goal is to not just create professional theatre accessible to all Knoxvillians, but to create theatre true to the stories of Knoxville, shared collectively by those on every side of every line. In late 2014, some good friends at Gridwell came around our urgent desires to make theatre that is honest, relevant, and beautiful, and they helped us sculpt a vision for a professional theatre company with a community heart. We came up with two images: the river and the rail. We latched onto the idea, because the river and the rail are emblematic of Knoxville’s proud, industrious past. The heart of downtown Knoxville is situated between these two modes of transit, and we owe much of our city’s identity and growth to both. Together, they are intrinsically and inseparably Knoxville. Next month, R&R brings back the whimsical, folk musical, The Unusual Tale of Mary & Joseph’s Baby. The musical dares to take the classic story at its word: there really is a pregnant virgin; there are shepherds, angels, foreign dignitaries, a ratty extra room/stable at an inn; and a maniacal, bloodthirsty dictator
whose menacing shadow hangs over everything. And, obviously, it’s a comedy. Seriously it is. With a racially diverse cast, an exciting new set, and an emphasis on simple storytelling, The Unusual Tale of Mary & Joseph’s Baby surprises virgin-believing, and non-virgin-believing, audiences alike, engaging this oft-told story with a sincerity and humanity that bursts with imagination and wonder. The Unusual Tale of Mary & Joseph’s Baby is written by Tennessee-based award winning recording artist, Don Chaffer, and NYC-based playwright, Chris Cragin-Day. This year it’s being directed by Laura Dupper with assistance from R&R cofounder, Amelia Peterson. R&R is now the proud owner of 111 State Street the former Cor-Tenn facility in Knoxville’s Old City. This summer we began the basic renovations needed to open the space for public performances. We are very close to being able to share our new home with you. Follow us on Facebook at River & Rail Theatre Company or on Instagram @riverandrailco to join us as we finish turning this warehouse into a state-of-the art multi-use performance space for theatre, music, dance and more. Join us for First Friday, December 6th, 2019, for an Open House at the new Old City Performing Arts Center. Explore the space, meet the artists involved, and learn more about our vision for the OCPAC.

Cheers to the Holidays W
e’ve all heard references to opening a bottle of “Dom” to mark a special occasion or watched as it’s sprayed at a monumental win such as the Kentucky Derby, Formula One’s Grand Prix, or the Super Bowl. Often found in hip hop lyrics – and said to be Jay Z and Beyonce’s champagne of choice – “Cristal” has joined “Dom” as a champagne that’s synonymous with extravagance and celebration. Champagne is the wine of celebrations. Whether the loud pop of the cork followed by an explosion of bubbles or the muted thud and smoking bottle effect, just opening a bottle of champagne creates a show. Champagne announces the party has started and you have reason to celebrate.
Not all bubbly is the same...Prosecco, Italian sparkling wine, is sweeter than champagne.
To truly be champagne, sparkling wine must be produced in the Champagne region of France. Don’t assume prosecco (sparkling Italian wine) and champagne are interchangeable. Prosecco is much sweeter. If you want the flavor of champagne without the pricetag of a French wine, there are good California sparkling wines being made in the French tradition. Just remember, all bubbly is not the same. A good selection of champagnes can be found locally. From super luxury bottles to won’t-break-the-bank options, these champagnes received high marks by Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast and are readily available for your holiday celebrations. Q & A with local artist: Dee Dee Brogan Interview & Photographed by Jess Maples
How did you get started in music? I started singing as a child in church choir and in my school programs and chorus. Of course, growing up in South Carolina, I was raised on country and church music. Then I discovered that I could hit all the really high notes that left people talking; You know, the ones that made the grandpas rip out their hearing aids and were close enough to break glass!? So, I flipped gears and started studying classical music and competing and winning competitions singing opera. Singing classical music landed me in many choirs and small groups that took me all over the world and into countries that I had only read about in text books. Travel was important to me because it made the places I had heard about, really come to life. I spent years developing my craft as a soloist, choir singer, and in church gaining amazing experiences that carry over to my music today, but there came a point that I was just ready for a break, and just like that, silenced my singing. I guess you could say that I got burned out.realize now what I didn’t understand then, that I had to be still and be quiet to get ready for what was coming next with my music, not just my singing. About four years ago, my friend and producer, Travis Wyrick, hunted me down literally at the gym like a creepy stalker and said, “You’re singing again, and I ‘ve hired Julius Blue as your Musical Director.” Julius and I were just standing there dumbfounded with awkward smirks staring at each other in the middle of me doing my squats with my trainer. The rest is history. I trusted the process of the vision Travis saw with no expectations, and found myself a place to land and call “home” with my music. Only this time, things were different. This new place knew no limits nor boundaries. I fell in love with music again and had my passion relit. This was about me and what made me happy! No one was telling me what I was singing or how to sing the song they had picked for me. This was my chance to become my own director, tapping into all the knowledge and love of music, singing and creating what I heard it in my head. This was refreshing. Working with Julius was a breath of fresh air. What is your favorite thing about being a musician in Knoxville? Knoxville has such a love and appreciation for music and the arts. It’s really a perfect place to sing your heart out around town at different venues and events. I think the folks that live in this region are particularly special. There is a diversity blended with education and a love for the simple good things. 54 KNOXVILLE STYLE MAGAZINE
Being a local artist here is special because the community is all about its people and its culture. I love that the Knoxville community not only supports, but wants to connect with local musicians. Life is about that connection and impact, and Knoxville has a little something for everybody. Our community loves and embraces me as a singer and songwriter, and that continues to challenge me to put out more good music, as well as other cool things coming in the near future. Can you elaborate on what all you’re launching in the next year? A little about your new albums, podcasts, and any upcoming shows. I had no idea that I would fall in love with writing and completely have a love affair with words. Just this year, I released my very first EP of originals, ACT 2. “Merry Go Round,” and it has been pretty dang awesome to have gone from being still and quiet and silencing the music, to discovering who I am today as an artist, and then deciding to take a stab at writing songs, to actually recording and producing them, and putting them out for the world to hear. I had no idea that that was even possible, nor did I understand that it was even in me to accomplish. In just 2 weeks, I am releasing my second EP this year, with five brand new originals, “So Do You Mind.” That’s exciting. And, coming this Thanksgiving, I have a fun new Christmas tune that will be released as a single for the holidays, along with one of my favorite covers of all time. Crazier still, life is moving me on the road to continue writing and performing and producing with Julius, but to also begin podcasting. You will now be able to catch me “Off Stage” interviewing people with impactful and life changing tidbits and stories. I love conversations and I love connection, so my journey is taking me to a place to focus on people and podcasting. People want to be heard. They need to tell their stories, and I have a platform that will allow them to share with listeners something worth hearing and talking about. That gives me the goosebumps. I am looking forward to several private shows in the next two months and a big 2020! I will be putting out another EP that I am currently working on with Julius Blue and Erick Baker. I am also releasing a new Christmas album in 2020. In addition, I am writing a book, and hope to have it finished and out by the holidays – just one year from now! My heart is drawn also to coaching and producing others, and I’m kind of thinking that my road is about to develop some new routes. Time will tell.

SEASONS READINGS H
appy Holidays everyone! This issue, I’m reviewing three books that I’ve really enjoyed reading over the last few months. There is something for everyone here – a fast-paced thriller, a beautiful and epic family saga, and a timely Christmas comedy. The first book is Never Have I Ever by Joshilyn Jackson (Harper Collins, July 2019). Amy lives a perfectly normal life, being a mother, scuba instructor, and helping her best friend run the neighborhood book club. That is until new neighbor, the enigmatic Roux, comes to book club, takes over and insists that everyone play a game of never have I ever. Soon the whole neighborhoods’ dirty secrets are coming out and Amy’s own dark past might be exposed. Can Amy beat Roux at her own game before losing everything and everyone she loves? This novel has everything from mystery and suspense to forgiveness and redemption and I could not put it down. The second book I chose is The Most Fun We Ever Had by Claire Lombardo (Orion Publishing Group, June 2019). This beautiful story spans 50 years of the Sorenson Family. Marilyn and David have four distinctly different and sometimes very difficult daughters, who all feel that they will never have the perfect love and life that their parents’ share. Suddenly, a secret son – given up for adoption by one of the daughters – comes barreling into their lives. His arrival changes the way they see their past and what they want in the future. I loved this stunning novel and every word rang brilliantly real and true. My final review is The Adults by Caroline Hulse (Random House, August 2018). Matt and Claire are recently divorced; but, that doesn’t stop them from wanting to spend Christmas as a family with their young daughter, Scarlett. So two exes, their daughter, their new partners and a long weekend at Happy Forest Holiday Park, what could possibly go wrong? Apparently everything! This book is bitingly hilarious, dark and yet completely relatable. It’s exactly what can happen – even given the best intentions – when you put four normal people in increasingly tense situations. These are my book picks for this issue, dearest readers! I hope you have a wonderful holiday season and just maybe get some alone time with one of these amazing titles! 56 KNOXVILLE STYLE MAGAZINE
