Starting Your Journey
The Guided Path to Success program (GPS) is designed to assist you in defining your time here in the School of Business at George Mason University. This program provides a structured framework consisting of various checkpoints that highlights all engagement opportunities offered by the School of Business. We created two paths that detail the recommended steps a student should take during their time at George Mason University. The first path within this booklet is recommended for first time college students while the second path is recommended for transfer students. These checkpoints are customizable, and can be used as a point of reference to help you reach your individual goals.
Year 1 Develop your personal academic plan
Utilizing the resources emailed to you after your New Student Orientation, develop your own semester by semester plan towards your ideal graduation date. Once complete, utilize the electronic form provided to submit for an advisor to review.
Meet the advising and career teams
Meet with an academic advisor at minimum once per semester. This allows you to check in on your academic plan, and discuss any academic questions or resources. Also, introduce yourself to the School of Business Career Services team. The School of Business is the only school with a unique career services center dedicated to you.
Meet with your professor for office hours
Your professors are the experts in their field. Begin building your network on day one by meeting with professors during their office hours.
Attend WelcomeFest
The big event of the year! Meet and interact with the entire School of Business community while enjoying free food and the chance to win epic prizes.
Apply for scholarships The School of Business has numerous scholarships available for its students. Make sure to review the online database for any you might qualify for. Applications open every spring semester for the upcoming year.
Complete the entrance survey
We want to hear from you! Make sure to complete the new student entrance survey, and provide us your feedback as well as your expectations of the school.
Year 2 Update your academic plan for any changes and connect your plan to potential careers Meet with an advisor and career services to update your plan and begin exploring how your major translates to the next steps.
Connect with School of Business through a focus group Attend one of these specialized groups to provide feedback to School of Business leadership.
Connect with fellow peers through a Student Organization
Student organizations are an ideal way to get involved. Connect with like-minded peers around topics of mutual interest.
Begin career networking development Meet with career services to being creating your resume and learn how your skills translate in the job market.
Attend a career workshop
These events are an excellent way to connect with the larger business community in the D.C. Metropolitan area and beyond. Get your name out there.
Visit The Global Education Office/attend study abroad event
Want to study abroad? Interested in exploring new cultures? Attend one of these events to learn about exciting opportunities.

Connect with School of Business through a focus group Attend one of these specialized groups to provide school leadership feedback on the School of Business.
Connect with fellow peers through a Student Organization
Never too late to join a student organization! Already a member? Consider running for a leadership position. These look great on your resume.

The biggest professional networking series of the year. Put on your business clothes and bring your resume to interact with recruiters in your chosen industry. Meet with career services for resume review and interview practice.
Attend a graduate school event
Graduate school in your future? Attend one of the many events hosted by our graduate programs to learn more.
Implement intership plan and complete an internship
Secure that internship and begin experiencing the career work force! Speak with an advisor about the possibility of taking BUS 492: Internship in Business.
Year 4 Review your academic plan and make any final updates Meet with an advisor for final review of your plan, and complete a graduation checklist to make sure all requirements are being met.

Update resume and cover letter Make sure to connect with career services to update and review your resume.
Connect with Alumni Meet with our Alumni Relations team and attend one of their events to connect to the larger Mason community.
Attend a graduation information session Attend our graduation sessions to ensure all steps are begin met and you know where to be on the big day. Enjoy free food as well.
Complete the senior review survey This is a chance for you to offer advice for future classes.
