George School Class of 2020

On Sunday, May 24, George School celebrated its 126th commencement and its first virtual one. The ceremony merged time-honored traditions, such as an opening to “Appalachian Spring” and the head of school’s address, with new features, such as the “presentation” of diplomas (received previously and opened on the day).

Several members of the Class of 2020 spoke and performed: Michael Clark (invocation), Katie Kendrick (“For the Class of 2020,” an original poem), Vee Rachakarakij (“She Was Mine”), Emily Matson (a speech titled “Reflection”), Jada Wooten (“Conqueror,” original choreography), and Naomi Namboodiripad (“Think of Me”). Silent worship was accompanied by the artwork of Kelly Banfield and music by Sam Coscia, and during the recessional, the George School Chorale performed “Among Friends” by James Prosser ’85.

As Sam Houser remarked in a letter to the class, “Years from now, you will look back on this spring with some measure of awe because you made it through while staying connected, while continuing your academic progress, and while remaining true to the extraordinary people you are.”

This 2019-2020 Annual Report includes donations made between August 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020. George School has tried to recognize all who have contributed so thoughtfully to the school. FRONT COVER: More than just a game, Four Square is a long-standing campus tradition, played on The Class of 1937 Student Plaza, called Red Square. The devotees cite inherent George School values—equality, playfulness, flexibility, community, creativity, inclusiveness, responsibility, tolerance, kindness, and humor—as integral to the game. BACK COVER: George School students told tales from the Book of Genesis in the musical Children of Eden in February 2020. The two-act performance moved from the narrative of Adam and Eve, through the legend of Cain and Abel, to the parable of Noah’s Ark.
