Hong Kong: The protests and the Chinese response By SIMON BURGESS Staff Writer Hong Kong is currently in an escalating conflict between it’s citizens and Chinese authorities. Hong Kong is not its own country, as many individuals believe, but rather exists as a of vassalized city under Chinese authority, with significantly more leniency compared to the rest of China’s territories. Hong Kong was a colony of the British Empire from 1842 until 1997 when it was transfered to China after a 99 year lease that was signed in 1898 ended. In the 1800s, a 99-year lease was the longest that could be negotiated. After the lease ended Hong Kong was promised that they would be able to maintain a seperate system of governing and economics. A principle referred to as the “one country, two systems.” Earlier this year, the Chinese president Xi Jinping essentially removed any governmental requirement for his re-election, making him president for life. This continues what many argue as China’s shift back to the authoritar-

ian state of the Cold War era People’s Republic, hallmarked by Hong Kong. President Xi has responded to the protestor’s efforts by stating that any attempt to separate from the Chinese state would “end in crushed bodies and shattered bones” (CNN). Currently, the Hong Kong protests have been going on for 19 weeks. Besides the president’s rejection of democratic protocol, the protests sprung from a since waved law stating that convicts in Hong Kong could be sent through the Chinese judicial system to be tried. For many convicts, this will most likely lead to a guaranteed prison sentence. Protestors bearing symbols of black umbrellas and surgical masks have been consistently protesting against the Chinese State in the past few months. These protests started as nonviolent, unified and featured a strong social media presence; however, as the gap has widened between the Chinese state and the Hong Kong citizenry, the situation has only become more violent. Hong Kong police have been escalating their counterstrikes, with the

beatings becoming more brutal with each passing week and some protestors have started pseudo-revolutionary action. Some have fought back; others have systematically started looting and vandalism of businesses and locations supportive of the Hong Kong Police and the Chinese State. Previously these efforts have been organized and regulated, with graffiti tags signifying what buildings were to be targeted and how to deal with them. However, there are now more desperate efforts in isolated incidents; arsons have been reported and the police reported locating an undetonated IED (improvised explosive device) located on a major and strategic roadway. The Hong Kong protestors punctuated their message by constructing a four-meter-tall statue of a female protestor, nicknamed “Lady Liberty,” which bore a flag reading “Reclaim Hong Kong, revolution now.” This was transported to the top of a prominent rock formation outside the city. Within two days’ time, the statue had its feet cut off and was sprayed with blood red paint.

Furthermore, also in attendance at the ceremony was the first president of the Rho Sigma chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Demarius Stewart, who is a 2019 graduate of Georgetown College. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the men of Kappa Alpha Psi joined together in singing the “Kappa Hymn,”

which celebrated all of the pillars of this organization. Olivia Coleman then closed out the ceremony followed by a closing prayer from Kappa member Nick Howard. On attending such a great and historic ceremony, Sigma Kappa member Samantha Hutchinson said, “It was incredible to get to witness such an amazing and historical ceremony for Georgetown, and one that has not been seen in many years. It was truly an honor getting to attend this ceremony along with several of my Sigma Kappa sisters.”

News An update on the Trump Impeachment Inquiry

Issue 17

By SHAKAYLA LUMPKINS Staff Writer

On Tuesday Sept. 24, Nancy Pelosi announced that the House will be pursuing a formal impeachment on our current president Donald J.Trump. This all started rolling after Trump allegedly withheld 391 million dollars from Ukraine for not digging up dirt on Joe Biden one of his potential competitors in the 2020 election. This is one of the many issues that Democratic leaders have had against Trump since he took office. Other issues include the alleged help that the Trump campaign recieved from Russia during the 2016 election, and the firing and qutting of most of Trump’s staff in the short three years that he has been in office. This impeachment inquiry came

with the charge that he has betrayed his oath of office and the nation’s security by enlisting a foreign power to tarnish a rival for his own political gain. Since the impeachment inquiry was announced by Nancy Pelosi, support within both House Democrats and everyday Americans has risen steadily. Currently over 95% of House Democrats support impeachment and as of a Oct 14, 50.3% of Americans support impeachment while 43.8% are opposed to it (FiveThirtyEight). There has also been a lot of news out of Washington since the intital impeachment announcement. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo acknowledged that he was also present on the call between President Trump and President Zelensky. Following that President Trump, while talking to reporters, asked China and Ukraine to

the impeachment inquiry as an illegal effort and at the same time it was announced that the US ambassador to the European Union, Gordon Sondland, would be blocked from testiftying before House committees. On Oct. 15, Rudy Guiliana, President Trump’s personal lawyer, defied a congressional subpoena for documents that House Democrats sought as part of the impeachment inquiry. With Giuliani’s own lawyer stating that the documents are protected by attorney-client privilege and executive privelege, despite the fact that Giuliani doesn’t work for the government. On the night of Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. the Democratic caucus had a meeting discussing the impeachment inquiry, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to announce a full floor vote on impeachment in the following days.

The Georgetonian Sports & Recreation A preemptive look at the Kentucky Lake perils prove too precarious for GC bass fishing club MLB postseason

Page 4

By BENJAMIN ROBISON Staff Writer The best part of baseball is finally here as the MLB postseason is underway. After a long 162-game regular season, fans and players alike are excited to get into playoff baseball. All the teams that made it to the postseason, excluding wildcards, dominated their divisions with four of the six teams accumulating over 100 wins during the regular season. Two exceptions came from the National League with the Atlanta Braves notching 97 total wins and the St. Louis Cardinals winning 91 games. The other four teams to win their division were the Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros, New York Yankees and the Minnesota Twins. Except for the Minnesota Twins, the other three teams are not new to playoff baseball. The Dodgers have made it to the playoffs every year since 2013 but have failed to

win the title. The Yankees and Astros have both made the playoffs for the past three years with the Astros winning it all in 2017. The teams that made their way into the National League Championship Series were not what most would have expected. With big upsets in the National League Division Series, the St. Louis Cardinals (#3) beat the Atlanta Braves (#2) while the Washington Nationals (#4) beat the Los Angeles Dodgers (#1). Currently, the Nationals have won the first three games against the Cardinals in the best-of-seven series and are one game shy of going to the World Series Championship. This postseason has been nothing short of exciting. The Yankees and the Astros are arguably the two best teams in baseball meaning the ALCS will probably go to a Game 7 with the Astros having homefield advantage at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas on Oct 15.

By SAM CLARK Staff Writer On Oct. 2, the Georgetown bass fishing club headed down to what some of them believe is quite possibly the worst fishing lake in America at this time. Kentucky Lake, Bassmaster Magazine’s 12th ranked best bass lake in America in 2014, would now barely crack the top 50. The culprit behind such a drop in popularity is noneother than the Asian Carp invasion. In the 1970s, the fish got loose from farm ponds during massive rains and quickly made their way into the Mississippi River. Between then and now, they have made their way through the Tennessee River, on which Kentucky Lake is located, and have multiplied by the millions. This is a problem to bass fisherman because the Asian Carp occupy the same waters that bass do. In the Spring, when bass go to spawn or

reproduce, the Asian Carp are in their waters, forcing the bass out, causing them to not spawn at all. This process has resulted in a decline in the bass population over the past five years. The bass fishing club felt the effects of this ecological process when, on the weekend of Oct 4, they failed to find even one bass from the already miniscule amount in the lake. Despite this, the club was able to catch some fish during their practice, and the pair of Jacob Locke and Hunter Osborne had surprising success on shallow ledges at the lake. In a statement regarding this success during practice, Locke said, “Anywhere we could find a cut or a point on ledges that went from about four or five feet of water to eleven or twelve feet of water, we caught some fish using a Strike King 5XD crankbait. I also caught three spotted bass in a row off of one tree, and that really surprised me.” Sophomore Cameron Cor-

nelius summed it up by saying, “It was a tough tournament for everyone and we tried our best but couldn’t bring home the win.” Despite the feelings of defeat that might have come from such a low catch rate at Kentucky Lake, the bass fishing club remains hopeful for more members to qualify for the national competition. The fishing club’s next tournament is on a lake that actually contains a healthy bass population, Lake of the Ozarks in Osage Beach, Missouri. The event will be the third event of the Yeti FLW College Fishing circuit for 2019, and will be the last chance for most of the team to qualify for the 2020 Yeti FLW College Fishing National Championship. Club members Hunter Osborne and Sam Clark have already qualified for next year’s nationals, and are rooting for the rest of their clubmates to qualify and be able to join them on the Harris Chain next February.

After a short and exciting season, the GC lacrosse team won the Women’s Intramural Flag Football Championship for Fall 2019. Their team, consisting of several freshman lacrosse players, went through the season undefeated. During the championship game on Oct. 14, the lacrosse team took on Phi Mu. The two teams played two, 30-minute halves in which the final score was 45-0 in favor of the lacrosse team. However, the game was still energetic and lively. Instead, both teams made great efforts to make the game as lively and fun as possible. Players cheered on their teammates for even small accomplishments like gaining three yards or getting open for a pass. Freshman lacrosse player Jamie Holdcroft said, “I thought playing intramural football was a bunch of fun and it definitely brought us closer together!” Though passes were dropped and runs were not

always very successful, sometimes even resulting in the starting line being moved backwards, players continued to be positive and enjoy the game. Freshman lacrosse player Jessi Vazzana said, “playing intramural football was a bunch of fun and it definitely brought us closer together!” In fact, nearly every play resulted in players from both teams congratulating the opposed on a pass wellcaught, a block well-thrown, or an impressive run. Instead of paying attention to the score, both teams focused on each play individually and encouraged one another in their efforts. Phi Mu team captain sophomore Kaylee-Dee Long said it was “a chance to show out, a place to get away from the stress of school for a bit and have some fun.” Ben Robison, head referee, was surprised about how positive teams were and how much laughter and enthusiasm players had on the field. He said “Regardless of the score, all of the girls enjoyed being out on the field and had fun!”

First held in 1985, the King of the Ring tournament is an annual event held by World Wrestling Entertainment that has led to a plethora of famous moments in wrestling history. Not only has it offered many memorable matches, but multiple winners have also gone on to be the “next big thing” in professional wrestling. From a historical perspective, it is arguably one of the most important events in all of wrestling. Despite the level of importance it has attained over the years, the first King of the Ring in 1985 was nothing more than a pointless tournament at a standard house show for the World Wrestling Federation. Because of this, when Don Muraco became the very first winner it did next to nothing for his already lackluster career. The next year, the WWF realized that the tournament offered potential and used it to help establish Harley Race as a top star in the company. Race was a household name in the 1980’s, but solely because of his legendary career in the National Wrestling Alliance. As a way to demonstrate Race’s star power without mention of an opposing company, Race became King of the Ring in 1986 and continued to use it as part of his character. This is the first instance of using the tournament as a character trait, a strategy that

has continued to this day. Race would come to the ring in a crown and cape, carry a royal sceptor, and even force opponents to bow down and kiss his feet. Put simply, winning the King of the Ring became the perfect way to build up the next big bad guy in wrestling. Though King of the Ring quickly became a way to help establish future stars, it also helped orchestrate key moments in wrestling history. The best example is certainly the Austin 3:16 monologue that helped transform “Stone Cold” Steve Austin into one of the biggest names in professional wrestling for decades. To provide some background on this industry-changing event, it was the 1996 King of the Ring tournament, which by now had become its very own pay-per-view event. Originally, a wrestler by the name of Hunter Hearst Helmsley was planned to win and promised the victory by management. He already had a blue-blood attitude character, and so being the next King of the Ring was the next logical step to elevate him to championship material. However, Helmsley unwittingly killed his own chances at this big break in his career. He was part of a backstage group of friends that referred to themselves as “The Kliq,” along with Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Shawn Michaels. Nash and Hall were preparing to leave the company for the rival World Championship Wrestling, and all four of the

close friends participated in matches against each other at a WWF event in Madison Square Garden in May 1996. After the main event between Nash and Michaels, all four men came to the ring and embraced, confusing fans who recognized all of the wrestlers as a mixed group of good and bad guys. This type of blatant disregard for storyline would not stand in the WWF, and so management took away the promises of Helmsley winning King of the Ring later that same year. Instead, they chose a young new wrestler named Steve Austin. What followed was an impressive showing from Austin throughout the tournament, that ended in the final match between him and Jake “The Snake” Roberts. Roberts, a recently born-again Christian, had been recently encorporating Christianity into his character. In terms of Austin winning, this would help fuel his rise to stardom. In what is now one of the most famous speeches in wrestling history, Austin stated that if Roberts wanted to tout around John 3:16, then he would inform him that Austin 3:16 says he just kicked his... you can guess what. Austin would go on from King of the Ring to become a top star in all of professional wrestling, who is now a sixtime WWE Champion, twotime WWE Intercontinental Champion and four-time WWE Tag Team Champion.

Georgetown College hosts 2019 recycling competition By BRADY PARLATO

Staff Writer Did you know that 14 billion pounds of garbage, mostly plastic, are dumped into the ocean each year? These plastics can constrict the digestive tracts of larger animals, leading to negative impacts on their development. Likewise, many smaller pieces of plastic are often consumed by seabirds and sea turtles, gradually killing them from the inside. Encouraging exercise from one student to another By CHARITY STOLTZ

Staff Writer Each week during the month of October, the Kinesiology and Health Science club is going to be sharing a story about exercise from someone on campus. This week’s feature is Mariah Addington. She was chosen this week because she has been trying to find fun and encouraging ways to exercise. Currently, her exercise consists mainly of walking and running. She is a very busy student on campus and so she must find creative ways to add exercise into her schedule. This semester she found an app to help her out. The app is called StepBet and is just what it

sented to her through this app because it gives her a way to stay mentally grounded. It also allows her to exercise at her own pace. Since the game is based off of the number of steps you take and not the intensity of a workout, she doesn’t feel like she has to push herself on those days when she just needs to take it a bit easier. She has the choice between running and walking and they both provide her safe and easy ways to reach her goals and stay active. If you are looking for ways to challenge yourself to get fit and think an app would be the best way for you to fit exercise into your schedule, the KHS

club would encourage you to try out StepBet or another app that works best for you. Just be sure you research the app’s credibility before you pay money to it or give out any personal information. New “Joker” stuns audiences worldwide By ROBERT BIRD Staff Writer The new movie “Joker” starring Joaquin Phoenix, one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, was released this past weekend. Phoenix stars as the titular character, and the movie was released to rousing reviews from moviegoers around the world. While there was some controversy as to the violence and graphic content shown in the film, most audiences have agreed that it is one of the best films of the year with an Oscar-worthy performance from Phoenix. “Joker” follows the character of Arthur Fleck and is an origin story for the character of the Joker in the Batman universe. Arthur is a wannabe stand-up

comedian, who has gone through many struggles in his life and battles several mental illnesses. He also takes care of his elderly mother at home, and the film explores his rocky relationship with her. The film also shows the tragic downfall of this character, and how the society reflects his mental health. The film is directed by Todd Phillips, who was previously most known for directing the comedic “The Hangover” trilogy and the drama film “War Dogs.” Phillips was a controversial choice when he was first chosen as director of the film, as he had never directed a superhero film or a film as dark as “Joker.” Phillips himself is said to have drawn much of his inspiration from the filmography of Martin Scorsese, specif-

ically “Taxi Driver” and “The King of Comedy.” As the buildup to the film’s release intensified, many critics and moviegoers began to express some criticism towards the film’s release, and argued that a film about a murderous psychopath would glorify violence and possibly inspire some kind of mass shooting. Several theaters even refused to show the film, most notably the Cinemark theater in Aurora, Colorado, where the 2012 mass shooting took place, and where the perpetrator of that shooting dressed up as the Joker for the shooting. However, after seeing the film, I believe that these allegations are most certainly false, and the film barely focuses on any sort of violence at all.

The film is an intense character study of an extremely sick man, and does nothing to glorify it or the violence that occurs as a result of his choices. While this is certainly a very sensitive and important subject in our culture, I do not believe this film promotes violence of this kind in the film, but represents the violence of an abnormal man with extreme circumstances. In conclusion, I can confidently say that “Joker” is definitely one of the best films that I have seen this year, if not ever. The performance by Phoenix as Arthur is truly one of the best performances that I have ever seen, and he has already gained a lot of buzz for Oscar season. I would highly recommend anyone who is a fan of film to immediately go out and see this film.

Horror movies to watch this Halloween

By KENNEDY FOREMAN Staff Writer

It is that time of year again. The moon seems brighter, the air is colder, and the leaves are changing. This beautiful time of year reminds us all about what October is all about- spookiness. If you find yourself craving some horror on Netflix, look no further. There is an endless supply of horror movies on the streaming service, but here are a few to save you time scrolling. Classics: These movies may not be the most high tech, but they have earned their place in the Horror Hall of Fame. The first up is “Scream” by Wes Craven. There are not many people who have missed out seeing this modern icon. With its jabs at previous horror films and the common tropes seen

within them, as well as its clever scares and twist ending, this movie is sure to not disappoint. Another classic that can grace your screen wherever you have a WIFI connection is the original “Carrie.” This movie produced in 1976, based on Stephen King’s novel by the same name, has been watched over and over again for decades. While the effects, clothing and technology might be dated, this movie shows the roots of horror and how the evolution of modern technology has really amped up the scare factor in scary movies today. Paranormal: “The Ritual” is a movie about friends who are going on an adventure after the death of their longterm friend. At first, the dense forest and quiet atmosphere of the woods is enough to give you the creeps.

Eventually, the men come into contact with a creature that is larger than life and it’s followers. The movie gives some good gore, creatures, and crazy people. All around a good time for any horror movie lover. “The Conjuring” is widely known, with its universe expanding over six movies. However, it all began in this original film that shows the horror that was endured by a small family in the United States. The movie sucks you in with relatable characters and beautiful camera work. On its own, it is a good movie. It sets the bar high for other horror movies of this era. Honorable Mentions: “The Autopsy of Jane Doe” is a great movie for both its graphics and its story telling. It is an enjoyable mixture of dread and gore you rarely see in modern horror films.

revealed in “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.” Picking up directly after the bloodbath of “Breaking Bad’s” final episode, the film follows Jesse’s run from the police (in the El Camino) after his liberation from Jack Welker’s compound. Not only does he run from law enforcement throughout the film, but he also attempts to escape the turmoil of his past. Directed by “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” producer/director Vince Gilligan, it has quickly become a critically acclaimed gift to fans of the drug-fueled series. The film, although released six years after the 2013 series finale, captures what made it so captivating to audiences. The story telling is immaculate while maintaining the soul and character of the original story, and the fan-service is perfectly implemented without being gaudy and

obnoxious. Additionally, the cinematography of “El Camino” is, remarkabe, even greater than “Breaking Bad’s.” The gorgeous sweeping shots of nature throughout seem to develop alongside Jesse as he heals from the PTSD dealt to him from his imprisonment. Above all else, Aaron Paul delivers the performance of his career in illustrating the intricate metamorphosis of Jesse Pinkman. Within the enthralling two-hour cinematic experience, the character sees the redemption he has deserved for years. The film captures every aspect of what made “Breaking Bad” as reputable as it was and further builds upon its prestige. Now streaming on Netflix and in certain theaters, “El Camino” is Gilligan and Paul’s magnum opus that should be viewed by any fan of the original show.

Another two great movies are “Creep” — the first as well as the sequel Both of these films leave you biting your nails and yelling at the television. “Insidious” is another film that has spanned multiple movies, but still has the fear-factor whenever viewing it.

MEN ON BOATS

“El Camino”offers redemption By COLTON SOSBE Staff Writer On Jan. 20, 2008, the pilot of a compelling new television series starring Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul aired on AMC. Five years and five seasons later, the show would become one of the most widely acclaimed television series of all time. This show was “Breaking Bad.” Within its life, it would win two Golden Globes as well as 146 other wins and 228 nominations. Once its legendary career came to a close, fans would yearn for more of the series until “Better Call Saul” debuted on AMC two years after the original story closed. However, both of these series have yet to answer an important question: where is Jesse Pinkman? On Oct. 11, 2019, his fate after the events of the original series was finally

By SOPHIE TAYLOR Staff Writer In asking others about their experiences shopping online, one marketplace comes up time and again despite how untrustworthy the mega-merchant is: Wish. Wish isn’t the only app of its kind, other marketplaces like it exist, like Alibaba, AliExpress and more. The concept is the same regardless: offer cheap prices for the products that consumers want, delivered from small merchants overseas in approximately a month. While a lot of reviews complain about how long it takes to receive their products, it feels more concerning to mention that the items sold on Wish are not regulated. Wish and companies like it are only the company that gets your purchases to you, it has nothing to do with the quality or the safety of the product(s) you’re buying. This means that the ingredients in your cosmetics are largely unknowns and who really knows why the clothing you ordered smells faintly of gasoline? Not Wish, and definitely not you.

The truth is, buying from mega-marketplaces like Wish is all too tempting if you just can’t be bothered to buy the real thing when a knockoff that looks close enough is offered for so much cheaper. What’s the harm, right? Unfortunately though, when it comes to some of Wish’s big ticket items (electronics and cosmetics mostly), not only are the counterfeit versions of well-known products probably not going to work as well as you’d hope, but in some cases they could put you in direct danger. Cosmetics from infamous counterfeit hotspots like China have been analyzed for years and among plenty of dangerous, cancer-causing chemicals that shouldn’t be going on your face, labs have found feces, urine and other human waste hidden behind the shiny plastic packaging. Counterfeit electronics often hide even less safe versions of the lithium ion batteries found in our cell phones. When overheated, these batteries can explode and start fires, something which has popped up rather frequently in the news over the last several years. Despite the concerns of some, incidents like these continue to

rear their ugly head. Safety and legitimacy is no longer the broke consumer’s most valuable guide when shopping online, but rather the size of the price tag. That kind of consumer is undeniably dangerous to the future of online marketplaces. If retailers feel that the consumer is not terribly attached to the values of product safety and legitimacy, they will abandon them to keep their customers engaged. If they see a retailer with rock bottom prices but questionable products gaining traction, they could try to imitate this for profit. Cheap prices, massive variety and the convenience of online shopping are some of the same reasons why so many college students go to Amazon—where third party sellers are very quickly becoming king. Be warned, the things that make Wish and other places like it so tempting are the same reasons why one should exercise caution. On online super-marketplaces like Wish, they leave the choice up to the consumer: are cheap prices truly worth the sacrifice of product safety?

Video Recording at concerts is annoying By ASHLYN REED Staff Writer Okay I’ll say it, people who record concerts just to post later are posers. I understand recording bits and pieces, taking some photos and maybe posting one or two later on. But someone who stands towards the front of the venue, when it is general admission, just to hold their phone up the entire time, grinds my gears like nothing else. I have been to a couple of general admission concerts now, where you stand in line for an hour or two, and

when they scan your ticket at the door, you find a place to STAND. You stand somewhere you think you will get the best view, but when Tall Boy Timmy is right in front of you, arms over his head, standing straight up, phone blocking the best view, it takes away from your experience at the concert and then some. I personally record maybe the first 15-20 seconds of a song, and I don’t even do it with every song. I record the ones that have the coolest light sequences or if it is my favorite. For example, this last week I went to a Catfish and The

Bottlemen concert, and when they played my favorite song, “Longshot,” I recorded exactly 27 seconds of the song. This was during the chorus, when the venue was singing and the band was smiling, this is what I want to relive. The only other recording I took was during a classic of theirs, “Cocoon.” I recorded at this point because the guitar riffs and the bass aligned perfectly with the lights, all of it absolutely mesmerizing. But the rest of the time, my phone was situated in my back pocket. The couple in front of me though? They not only talked

through the entire opening act, which is a time for another article, but they BOTH had their phone out THE ENTIRE CONCERT! I couldn’t move to the left without being behind both phones, or without hearing them laugh about something completely unrelated. They were both so caught up in not paying attention to the opening act, that when July Talk themselves walked right by us, they didn’t look up or acknowledge them. More than likely because they had no clue what they looked like. My point here is that when you pay to go to a concert,

even if you are taking the love of your life or your best friend, pay attention and appreciate the art. Personally, I won these tickets, I also won a meet and greet with the band, a band that got me through most of high school. I was so focused and appreciative of their art, of the way they performed and what they were giving us, the paying consumers in music. At a concert, be there, be attentive and listen to the music. Listen to the jokes on stage, and please, for the love of all things holy, put the phone down and go to the concert; like they did in the good ole days.

tinue. The protestors are now protesting police corruption and the stagnation of democratic reforms, but the extradition bill is still a reason. The crowds have gotten into the hundreds of thousands, but now are smaller due to them splitting up and protesting in multiple locations around Hong Kong. Recently, Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey tweeted his support for the protestors in Hong Kong. The NBA later made him delete it, because it offended China. This is just one of the many examples of American corporations bowing to the totalitarian Chinese government. These corporations take a “social justice” stand in the US

while gladly doing business with the Chinese. The fact that the NBA and other American corporations are siding with communists to further their greed is ironic. The protestors in Hong Kong know that China could crack down at any moment, just like they did in 1989 at Tiananmen Square. Hundreds to thousands of peaceful protestors were mowed down in Beijing while peacefully protesting against their government. We cannot stand idly by and let this happen again. Republicans and Democrats are united against the NBA for their stance on the protests. The Chinese might be a huge market for the West, but this should not overshadow

who they are. The Chinese are sending hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs and other Chinese citizens to “reeducation camps.” The “social credit” system of mass surveillance tracking your actions to determine access to certain goods and services. There are also other human rights violations, such as the detentions without trial, forced abortions, torture, forced confessions and restrictions on free speech and other basic human rights. The United States, the so-called “leader of the free world,” remains silent on the protests even as they wave the American flag to symbolize freedom and democracy. What Americans need to do, instead of boycotting Chic-

fil-a or Starbucks due to their domestic political stances, is boycott the companies supporting these undemocratic and oppressive regimes. These greedy corporations who think it’s trendy to take a political stance as long as it makes them money are a threat to democracy, freedom and human rights around the world. Americans might not agree on every issue, but we are all united in the fact that we know that freedom and democracy should be a right for everyone around the world. We should support the Hong Kongers in their protests, as should these American corporations who constantly espouse social justice. I stand with Hong Kong.

I stand with Hong Kong — do you?

By COOPER ADKINS Opinion Editor The protests in Hong Kong have caught the attention of the entire world. The protestors, a large majority of them peaceful, were in response to an extradition bill. This bill would have given China the power to extradite fugitives who are wanted in places where China does not have extradition agreements, such as Taiwan and mainland China. This would in turn represent a crackdown on the civil liberties guaranteed to Hong Kong after its 1997 transfer from the British. Although the bill was removed from consideration in Parliament, the protests con-

Okay, you all! This is the time in the semester for scheduling advising apointments with your advisors which can be a stressful time, especially for our seniors. Here are some ways to help you all find some calm in the storm: 1. Come to your meeting prepared to discuss your class selections. 2. Read the class descriptions in the course catalog before you decide to take the class or not. This way you already know what to expect. 3. Schedule your meetings during a time of the day and week that is less busy. in order to dedicate all your time to the importance of the meeting. 4. Have a plan in your head but understand that changes to the plan are acceptable. 5. Bring the “Core Check Sheet” with you so that you can confirm with your advisor that you are taking the appropriate classes. 6. Write down some possible back up classes that you could take next semester if the classes that you want to take get filled up. This way you are not scrambling around at the last minute. 7. Walk your schedule of classes to make sure that you will have enough time to get to all of your classes before your next class. 8. On the morning of your registration time, set your alram and sign on to the portal at least 15 minutes early so that the somputer system does not kick you off while it is being overloaded by requests. 9. Lastly, write down your time to register so that you remember to wake up!
